    Lubuntu failed due to graphics settings, add folowing to /etc/yaboot.conf
    Add :- video=readeonfb:0ff radeon.modset=1 radeon.agpmode=-1 (replace the line 'quiet splash')
    then 'sudo ybin -v' and restart
    to get it to boot so you can do the above, type 'video= redeon etc.... as above' when you get the boot prompt at startup.

    May I know I you formatted the USB with APM or MBR partition map? I have a Pismo that I would like to use with Ubuntu possibly with an earlier version but I think doable.

      Linux would definitely: a) run faster in that vintage PowerPC hardware and b) update to most current (at least supported for PPC) software than Tiger; and more importantly c) make those wifi dongles work by compiling drivers, kernel, etc, as opposed to a closed dead vintage apple os

      @@alerey4363 The only Linux that will run faster than Tiger on a Powerbook is either console only with no GUI or an old version which has the same out of date problems as Tiger. If you can point out a video where modern Linux runs demonstrably faster than OSX on a Powerbook I'd be happy to be proven wrong.

    Great video. I have the same laptop an apple G4 Powerbook 12 inch with a 1.5Gz Power PC processor and with the RAM maxed out at 1.25GB. However, I want to make mine a dual boot system with OS X 10.4 Tiger and with a version of Link Mint. Does anyone know where, I can get a copy of Link Mint on either CD-ROM or a USB Flash Drive that would work on this vintage computer?

      To run OS X 10.4 Tiger on my 12 inch Powerbook G4, I did not use anything special. Just loaded either an apple retail upgrade CD/DVD from OS X 10.3 Panther to OS X 10.4 Tiger or an apple retail (none upgrade) full version DVD of OS X 10.4 Tiger.

    I've just spent about four hours trying to get this to work on G4 Powerbook, to no avail, none of the boot commands worked, usb just wouldn't be recognised by the system. :( Now it's stuck with OS X 10.4.11, which just doesn't work on the "modern" internet.

    • @yanksrock1000
      @yanksrock1000  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dang, that's odd. Can you view the USB at all in OS X? If you can, I would try looking at this article (sites.google.com/site/shawnhcorey/howto-boot-apple-powerpcs-from-a-usb-drive-in-open-firmware), maybe your drive is labelled differently than mine in OpenFirmware...
      If none of the USB options work, I would say your next best bet is using a CD or DVD if you have a blank one laying around. Good luck!

      @@yanksrock1000 I've actually spent the last couple hours attempting to install various different versions of Ubuntu PowerPC ISO's from DVD. Mate 16.04 will boot, I get some strange firmware error messages flashing up during loading, and then the system will hang during installation. I've spent maybe 8 hours on this over the past couple days, but sadly that's the limit of my patience with it. :(
      As a unit, the case itself is very well designed, just a same it's got such odd hardware inside. I'm not a "Mac guy", but it seems to me that the Powerbooks with their weird, not quite full on Mac, but not quite a full PowerPC architecture are very problematic when it comes to "modern day" usage.

    • @yanksrock1000
      @yanksrock1000  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      mrmactknife Agreed, the lack of software support for PowerPC Macs make using them a bit of a pain. But beautiful machines when they work! Maybe in the future you could try installing OS X 10.5 Leopard for a slightly more modern OS experience. Cheers!

      @BandiPower 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You can actually browse the modern internet with Mac OS X Tiger. TenFourFox is a browser for Powerpc that lets you view the web in HTML5 format AND watch video from websites like TH-cam and DailyMotion. Hope this helped.
