This Macintosh iBook G4 came out in 2005 and has a single core PowerPC processor running at 1.42ghz. There's 1gb RAM and 100gb HDD. I spent the past week installing Lubuntu 16.04LTS and fine tuning the system to make it work. There's several things you should know to get the wifi, graphics and system running smoothly. In this video I try to go over all of those. Some helpful links are:

    yaboot command needs a captital L for "Linux video=radeonfb:off radeon.modset=1 radeon.agpmode=-1 "

    • @stevenhoefel
      @stevenhoefel 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      modeset, not modset.
      It's wrong in the enlarged text in the video as well, but then correct on the actual laptop screen.
      And the view of the edited yaboot config has other errors with the radeonfb argument.
      But I'm sure everyone will work it out eventually.

    Dude! I just spend a week figuring out the same thing! Wish I found this video sooner. Rock on man! Good to know my expectations of browsing modern websites with it was unrealistic. The specs on mine are slightly worse too. Glad I got a GUI going at least! Support and documentation for working on these is dwindling for sure. Thanks for your share.

    Just to make sure, when everything is configured, does that mean we get working graphics acceleration (hardware acceleration) and not software acceleration?

    I found G4 in garbage, bought PSU, replaced keyboard and screen, so my investment was about 25$ thanks to eBay. Now I'm asking myself: Why did I bother in the first place- I have plenty of more powerful laptops? Just a nostalgia, that I couldn't afford it when they first showed up and G4s were used even in Hollywood for post-production. And now it's a junk, pretty much.

    Hi. I’m trying to bring back to life my powerbook G4. I’ve already installed the software but whenever I reboot it the screen gets super dark and you can barely see anything. The only solution I’ve founded is reinstalling the whole software again. Does anybody have a solution?

      hold down the fn key and press the brightness button repeatedly. If that doesn't work , before rebooting install xbacklight, then create a script to run at login something like 'xbacklight -set 100'

    Cool, I have a g5 running lubuntu being used as a file server mainly, just wish that given the size of the case it was easier to fit more than 2 hard drives. It has run for 3 years now with no real issue tho it refuses to work with any other monitors than the original display it came with.

      it is VERY difficult to get these things to boot from USB. I've only ever succeeded with it once, and that was with Mac OS. I'm not even sure it's possible with Linux. This was the guide I used to make it work for Leopard ben-collins.blogspot.com/2010/08/booting-your-ibook-g4-from-usb-stick.html. Also, it was very important to write the usb stick on a usb 2.0 port, not 3.0. Hope that helps. If you are successful, please report back with your process! Good luck!

      Thanks for the quick answer. I keep getting the same error message. I did the installation from a usb stick instead of a CD, might that be the cause of the problem.
