- In this video I give you some information I thought you may find useful when purchasing a DeWalt punge saw/track saw. I have now had this saw for a few months and can highly recommend it.

Although I got this DeWalt track saw system over a year ago I've just recently started to use it on projects and I'm having misgivings about the whole thing - especially considering the top notch price is perhaps not reflected in a top notch tool.
On sheet (plywood etc.) it is very handy and fast but on higher quality woods you'd be well advised to think a bit before you use this saw.
1. The saw blade is only near true when it is locked into the 90/0 position. The tilting design for the blade cannot ever be fully accurate as the tool body (and blade) does not hinge around a shaft. The rotation is guided along a quadrant curved rail at the front and separately at the back. It is possible and likely there will be a millimeter of difference from the front of the saw to the back when the body is rotated. You can understand this if you inspect the tool and method of rotation. Give it all a wiggle and find yourself disappointed at what you observe.
2. I've not yet come across any mention but everyone should importantly be aware that when you want to check how true the saw blade is set then you cannot use the saw base plate for a reference. The saw can only work if it is located on a track -- the track is actually the base plate reference for the cut. You have to make any accuracy calibration recognising the track governs all.
I found (the hard way) my brand new tracks were actually slightly cupped (tilting the saw out of true) - this can be overcome by ensuring you press down straight and vertical on to the saw thus making certain the track is flat under the saw. Two handle operation works well for this but I think you have work out each long cut to allow you to walk alongside and no long arm reaching.
3. Obviously bends, dings and worn rubbers on the tracks have to be avoided.
4. My saw has vibrated from new. It growls and shakes when starting and I have heard this happening on other videos too - therefore, I think this is just part of the speed control and start up. It has no effect on cutting.
However, my saw also shudders and grumbles frequently when it should really be just a nice smooth whining cutting machine. I have come across other reviewers and video comments highlighting this exact same thing.
I have been in contact with DW service here in the U.K. and of course they say send it back for inspection - but I'm fed up with this hassle.
Yesterday, I noticed a lot of sparking from the motor brushes and this being a new tool I then just let the motor run continuously for about 10 minutes to bed the motor brushes. This very much reduced the sparking and also reduced the in work vibrations. I'm wondering if the problem is poor build practice or quality control. Anyway, I still have a problem to fix with mine and I'm not the only one.
Overall, it is a handy tool and could be a 'must have' for any worker. Right now, perhaps this DeWalt DW520 example does not warrant the endless glowing appraisals. Perhaps it does have some negatives.
Wow an amazing break down mate, and I have definitely noticed the rattling and noise from the motor. I only really use my saw for 90 degree cut so not seen these other issues. My favourite thing about the set up is the versatility of the track. 😊

Some questions if I may?
I was just making my first cuts with mine (hence watching your vid) and the thing got to a point where it wouldn't go forward. Riving knife too shallow?
Either way, I then made some plunges and hit a bloody panel pin I'd forgotten about. How many of those does it take to blunt a blade, do you know?
I also made the mistake of trying to drive forward when first starting a new cut and it kept kicking back. I should plunge shouldn't I? I guess the clue is in the name plunge saw :-D
The bit you missed out was checking the back of the blade for fused on rubber from the track. My blade went out of balance because of it. You might need a bit of white spirit or some other solvent to get it off. Bit of a design flaw if you ask me.
That's one I've never experienced or heard of before. What exactly happened?
@@karlpopewoodcraft I got the saw last year with the DeWalt track and initialised the track as per instructions. I used it for a job, all fine but as time went by using it on various small tasks, I noticed a vibration when cutting. I thought maybe I should change the blade because some people recommend changing out the stock blade so I took it out. When I inspected it, there was a flat, broad black fused rubber ring on the reverse side of the blade and also fused rubber on the inside of the hardened teeth. It was actually difficult to remove i.e. didn't just peel off, it was firmly adhered to the surface of the blade and only a good scrubbing with a cloth and some methylated spirits did the job.
It was obvious where the black rubber had come from. The vibration was much reduced after cleaning, though I would not say it runs like a Rolls Royce. It cuts reasonably OK. Overall, I think it is OK for the money but it is cheaply made and a bit disappointing but I guess you get what you pay for. Just my opinion of course.
Had bother with the splinter guard as I couldn't cut it at the very ends without the saw coming off the track at one end and when it did, it wasn't straight. So I recommend putting both tracks together first and cut, the swop them around and go again

Great video, very informative.... There are clamps that come with it,..(accessories). Question: why not use clamps when cutting? There are different kinds of styles of wood(with groves, or holes), plus the saw dust is getting between the track and the lumber getting the stripes full of fine dust.?
Hi Carlos, yes I have recently purchased the track clamps and these are great for accurate cuts. I also use a shop vac to keep the dust away and the dust extraction is excellent. Cheers Karl

Hi Craig, you don't need track clamps, I have some but only use them on occasions when I'm doing a long accurate cut say 2.4m. Oak veneer I regularly cut no issues.

Great vid Karl, just bought one and track. I didn’t fully understand why the rubber strip on the track needs to be trimmed? I assumed it would come ready to use.
Hi ye it's a strange one isn't it. Every track saw arrives in the same condition. Just use some scrap board make your first cut and the rubber is then trimmed to size then everytime you make a cut after this you just line up the rubber with your pencil line and it's spot on accurate.

Yes it's basically a plunge saw so can be used off the track, personally I've never done that before but it's capable. I've literally used my circular saw a couple of times since owning a track saw.

Hey Karl, I have got a couple Dewalt track saws recently and have noticed that they have a growl/rough vibration when starting up. When the blade gets to full rpm they smooth out but occasionally do it during the cut. Have you experienced this?
Hi Travis sorry for the late reply only just seen your comment, no mine starts up incredibly smoothly I can't think why that would be happening. Is the blade secured tightly? Sounds like they may be a issue. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

@@ivusoskivusosk6548 I actually got another replacement and it did the same thing. I called a couple repair centers and they said the sound was normal. After more research I found that the Festool does the same thing. Something with the variable speed motor. I don't care much for the sound but the saw still works great!

What prevents the track from moving while cutting?
Hi mate, there is a grippy rubber strip on the underside, you can also buy special clamps but I rarely use these.
Does this cut kitchen end panels satisfactory or is the Makita better?

What made you plump for the Dewalt over the Festool? Pretty much sold on the Festool myself, the fact literally every man and his dog has one - almost to the exclusion of all other track saws - leads me to believe it must be doing something right!
Hi mate if I was using the saw in a static location say on a mft table and had a permanent track for repeated cuts I would have gone for the festool, however I think the versatility of the Dewalt and being able to use both side of the track makes it more appealing to me as I use the saw on site and in the workshop.
karlpopewoodcraft Yeh fair play, I can definitely imagine scenarios where that could be super handy being able to use both sides - having one side cut for 90 and one side for 45 so you can line it up perfect regardless is a nice option, the built in anti-kickback that you can disable is particularly nice too. Shame more of them don’t have the anti-tip when you’re doing bevel cuts like the makita has, that seems like such an obvious flaw that they could fix.
I am a bit torn because all my cordless tools are Dewalt and that’s not changing any time soon, obviously corded you’ve got the freedom to buy whatever and I’m still leaning towards the Festool, although I imagine both will be more than adequate for my needs.
I take it you’re a chippy by trade? And that woodworking is kind of a branch off of that?
The track. Double sided. I use one edge for 90° cuts and the other side for beveled cuts. Why? With beveled cuts the rubber strip edge is different then 90°.

The riving knife is slightly missaligned on mine and keeps getting stuck when I first set off. Can it be adjusted.

So the scale says 5kg but it doesn't feel that heavy so it must be well balanced out. 🤔😁
i just got one and love it BUT DO NOT go and plunge into a £600 oak worktop with it until you've set it up proper, mine wasn't cutting true 90 degrees 89, there's 2 screws in the base plate to fine tune.

Hi, I am gonna buy a plunge saw Bosch gkt or this one dewalt still thinking which is better I like track dewalt but the engine 1300 bosch more powerful but don’t like track somewhere heart that dewalt have to use only dewalt blade cos of the anti kick can’t install Freud is that true?
