Never. Ever. Ever. EVER. NEVER. EVER. Talk. To. Cops. Without. A. Lawyer.
Even if it's your brother in law. Even innocent people have gone to jail because they said the wrong thing and or mis-remembered something.
There's even a great video on youtube "never talk to cops" or something like that which goes through why there are only negative outcomes possible.
Hank is obsessed. He should have though things through better.

He was obsessed - but let's not act like he didn't have a _very_ good reason to be. He says it himself - the murderous meth kingpin he's been chasing this whole time was his own family. A man he thought he could trust. The betrayal and anger cloud his judgement.

Neither Jesse or Skyler are innocent.
Hypothetically, even if Jesse hasn't murdered anyone, he would still have to face the consequences of his actions, because he consistently teams up with Walt time and time again.
He delivered a huge hospital speech about Walt ruining his life and everyone he loves, then joins back with him in the same episode.
So I really hope El Camino doesn't try to spin Jesse's epilogue story as an innocent man who doesn't deserve prison time. Jesse deserved to go to jail even before he partnered with Walt, because he was a drug dealer.

As the son of a prosector and as a former sheriff's deputy: Always. Get. A. Lawyer. The police are not your friend, they will do everything they can to put you in jail, they do not care about you, and even when they do they have no control over whether a state's attorney presses charges. I don’t necessarily feel the scene with Skylar caring for Walt was out of compassion or love (maybe a little due to the children factor) With the prior scenes of Hank pushing her into a corner, her own sister slapping the shit out of her and then trying to steal her baby, she felt so alone and terrified! I think she just needed SOMEBODY on her team and Walt was the only one available, unfortunately. As well as it was a moment of Walt being genuine again

    • @holysecret2
      @holysecret2 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

I think you are right about that. It's not as simple as being a hostage with stockholm syndrome, though that might be one factor as well. There is also the 20-year (or how long?) history between them.. Walt has started "breaking bad" only MONTHS back. Skyler isn't viewing Walter in the same way we the audience do, for her he is actual family. You aren't prepared to give up on your family over the course of a few weeks (when the main trouble between the two started), especially when he is lying there begging for your help (not saying she should in this situation, or that he is morally right or something, it's just a complex situation for Skyler in this case. He is not simply "the abuser" and she his victim. They are also accomplices, (former?) lovers, and, most importantly, parents, an aspect Walter is explicitly addressing in this scene.)

It has nothing to to with whether Hank is on her side, the rest of the govt doesn't give half a shit. Getting legal counsel should not in theory bias her innocence or guilt in the eyes of the law, because in reality, being so close to any significant criminal activity even if you are in fact innocent, may involve needing legal counsel to ensure that you don't wrongly implicate or say the wrong sort of things about yourself or about someone else.

I think Skylar was going to talk until the point where Hank mentioned that Walt was dying. The worst case scenario for Skylar would be to have to tell her son, and daughter in the future, that their father was a meth drug lord who murdered dozens of people. She never wanted to have to make the kids face that truth, and she certainly didn't want it to all be for nothing.

    • @holysecret2

Don't forget about the fact that he put a lot of pressure on her, saying she should not go get a lawyer and stuff, nobody who wants your best will tell you that. I don't think she thinks that Hank was trying to trick her or something, but he clearly was emotional and did not think rationally. It's perfectly reasonable to get away from him in this situation. It was Hank's fault for putting too much pressure on her and not working with her rationally, which I believe she would have.

I recently watched a video of a UCLA professor who teaches screenwriting talking about Breaking Bad. And he said something I hadn't heard quite explained that way that summed up this show perfectly. Walt's goal was to better his family by starting to cook meth, but that action will also destroy his family and that conflict can never be resolved. Once Walt started down this path, his family was doomed from the get go. There was never a happy ending that could come out of this for the people around him.

That would have been nice. You know what could also be fun, is imagine D&D writing the last season of Breaking Bad... I wonder what that would be like.
Let's see... maybe Hank becomes so fearful of losing his job that he turns evil and teams up with Walt, and starts murdering several police officers to make sure Walt doesn't get discovered. Jesse goes back to drug use and anticlimactically overdoses and dies, and Walt suddenly realizes that Drugs Are Bad and turns himself in and admits everything.
When Skyler realizes that she was never caught and that no one is producing meth in New Mexico anymore, she decides to take advantage of that opportunity by planning to train Walt Jr. to cook meth and that they'll all continue in the family business. But as she's looking over Walt's notes, suddenly Todd comes flying out of the background with a Valyrian steel dagger and kills Skyler, finally putting an end to the family meth business.

I don't get all the hate for Walt. He is not a good person but he "broke bad" only a year ago. I am pretty sure Skyler still loves him in her own way despite all the things she sad. They lived like 20-30 years together, they build a family together and when he started this whole thing it was all for his family. Everything went to shit when his cancer regressed, his perfect plan went of the rails because all the things he did were under the assumtion that he will be dead soon. After that he had to face / deal with all the things he had done which pushed him further to the "bad side", it started to corrupt him and brought out the bad in him.

@Mr.Anonymous like I said "he is not a good person" but he isn't evil either, he is a complex character that was slowly corrupted. Jack and crew were pretty much inroduced to show you the difference between "real unconscionable criminals" and someone who was transformed by his life. The whole point of the show is to show this transformation and show how a good man can turn into a bad person. You don't need to like him but I don't see why they start hating on him so much. In my opinion Mike is at least as bad as Walt and they love him.

Concerning the whole Hank-lawyer-situation: For all Hank knows, Skyler was a hostage, taken by a ruthless druglord; The whole gambling story, that's what she got from Walt. Now Skyler admitted to Marie that she knew longer than anyone would assume, but proving it is a different thing, so there's a chance she can get out of this situation without much issue IF SHE COOPERATES. I believe that if she went to her lawyer she was at previously, she would advice again to cooperate. So in the end i believe that Hank acted the way he did, was because he had no doubt she would want to solve the situation quickly and thoroughly, not to mention that time was of the essence, getting his "proof" wouldn't take time, getting a whole task force on the street to actually get Walt however would, so why spend time dicking around with a lawyer and give Walt opportunity to set whatever plans into motion ? Cop or not, imo Hank acted with best intentions and actually was convinced to be doing the best for Skyler at the time, imo him forcing Marie to give the baby back proves as much.
