  • Yes! Quick release! That means no more endless screwing and unscrewing to make adjustments. And no tools needed to make adjustments, after it's put in the router.
    A single wheel sets the diameter and can be popped out and in for rapid set up.
    While I used plastic for the wheel in mine, the original plywood one should last a long time.

      I was thinking if John were to add two more (one at each end) they could be used to lock the base in position.

      Only thing I'd do differently is use a threaded insert in the knob as it will last longer than the wood threads

    Hi John,
    I made your circle cutting jig today. Thank you so much!! I used your updated technique for cutting the round base plate, I found that the collet for my dremel would hold the 1/8th drill bit, then the 1/4 inch collet would grip the dremmel collet enough for me to drill the hole in centre with the router. I then used the circle cutting jig to cut my baseplate. 👍👍👍

    Wow! Cool jig. Well done sir. I have a tip regarding wooden machine screws. I use some water thin CA glue on the threads to make them tougher. In an application like your circle jig, the CA goes in the hole right befor you run the hreaded rod rod back an forth being careful to keep the rod moving so as not to glue it in the hole. A little wax on the rod after the CA has dried makes it work smoothly. I tried it once when the idea first came to mind, and it's become a regular step whenever I'm cutting machine threads in wood. Thanks for sharing this well thought out jig.

    I Suggest superglue in the threads of the wood nut to strengthen them. Or, super in the hole of the nut before you thread it. Of course, allow the super glue to dry before putting it on the threaded rod

    Really good-if you want to make the wood thread last longer make an in-situ epoxy bush in the wood. Wax up the threaded stud , drill an oversized hole in the wood and fill the gap with thickened epoxy

  • @UberAlphaSirus

    Nice size. You could get extra fancy with the nut, maikng it like a quick release quill stop. using a threaded furniture cross dowel for the plunger half nut. I think they are M5.

    I have an idea to bounce off you. Instead of a wheel, what about cutting a thin slot parallel to the threaded rod, then inserting a piece of hacksaw blade using the hole end of the blade as a pivot. The hacksaw blade could be pivoted down to the threaded rod to engage blade teeth to rod threads. Perhaps some sort of spring could be added to press the blade down to the threads. The only thing would be getting a good match between the blade teeth per inch and the rod’s threaded per inch.

    Might it be an idea to add a lock nut at either the inside out outside of the block. I know it'll take longer to set, but nothing would be more annoying than to go around the circle and then find that the router's crept in to the work.

    Another great jig 👍 Wouldn't it have been simpler to have a single block which the threaded rod goes through, with a threaded knob going down through the block and pressing against the threaded rod to hold it ... quick release built in and nothing to really wear out ... another method would be to have a split in the block with the knob pulling the sides together to clamp the threaded rod in position!

    Why not just cut a nut into the plywood wheel . I know you won't getting quick release but you could spin the for with the drill for quicker adjustment

  • @Tool_Addicted_Carpenter
    @Tool_Addicted_Carpenter ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This is a great idea. For safety reasons I would probably consider it a prototype. It might be worth getting machined. I wouldn't want to rely on the epoxy to hold that little pin in such a thin piece of wood. I also have to assume the internal threads of the plastic knob will eventually stretch during use. If it was machined, the pin would be a weld and the knob could be aluminum with a push button quick release. After making a bunch of 10" and 11" circles this week, I would've used this if I had one.

    • @KipdoesStuff
      @KipdoesStuff ปีที่แล้ว

      so much over thinking, lol. How much force do you put on your tools?

    • @Tool_Addicted_Carpenter
      @Tool_Addicted_Carpenter ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KipdoesStuff There is a minimum force required to send router bits through materials. That's why we have a pretty big variety of routers from cut out tools/laminate trimmers all the way up to shapers and every HP in between.

  • @daveydacusguitars9033
    @daveydacusguitars9033 ปีที่แล้ว

    I like it. Solid design. Better than I could think up on my own I think. Although I think I would modify it a little.
    The screw knob thing looks a bit fiddly to me though. It will likely work a long time. I don't doubt that. I might would just use a solid block for the threaded rod to go though, then drill and tap an intersecting hole in the side of said block, and run a bolt with a home made head glued on for grip as a set screw. Just seems simpler to me, although you would lose any fine adjustment beyond just loosen, bump, retighten, try, loosen, bump, retighten.
