I was a meat cutter for 25 years and have a love affair with knives, (what guy doesn't!) and am addicted to "Forged in Fire". I have collected 40 to 50 lbs. of railroad spikes. This would be great to start learning the craft

Railroad spikes are good practice, but they don't make the best knives (the steel barely hardens)

@@jerryjordan1448 I live in an area where the Philly passenger train used to stop here in Quakertown, PA and continue to Allentown. They used to sell it with a differently designed valve assembly, and the wire braided hose. I have that one - unfortunately when I went to fire it up the other day, I did the soapy water spray bottle test on it and the coupling at the regulator with the hose was bubbling away. Promptly turned it off and emailed Mr. Volcano up with photos. They asked for my address and are sending a replacement hose and regulator. Probably be the current rubber one that they sell, but great customer service!

They’ll send you a new one. The one that they sent as a replacement even had the same issue as well, and they sent yet another one when I contacted them again. The third one doesn’t have the issue, but I could see eventually buying a premium third party option for the hose and regulator. Again though, really great customer service!

Yeah the only issue that I found with them is a refractory could be thicker which you would want to make the forge a bit thicker to accommodate, so like you can get about a quarter inch of refractory on it but you want at least about a half inch in ideal situation. The one other thing is a burner could be moved up more center of that plate instead of at the bottom of that plate, the reason why they did that is so that the flame hits and wraps around and creates like a vortex but when you put the brick in the bottom it disrupts that vortex so if they were to lift the burner up about halfway or so it would efficiently make that vortex because the flame would be hitting the brick and not the edge of the brick if that makes any sense, maybe one day they'll revise it but the forge is good enough for the price and in fact it's very very good for the price

Good review, and I am really glad you brought up the spot welded burner collars. I have the double burner model, and while it works fine, the collars both broke loose after just a few months and had to be rewelded down. That was really frustrating. A couple bolts before I had put it all together would have been exactly the thing as you recommend, as it was a lot harder to do with a constructed and used forge.

I followed the Refractory instructions to the "T". After 3/4 used the entire inside started to scallop. So bummed now. Going to try and peel it all off and buy a different Refractory cement in hopes of getting a longer lasting line. Great video.

In contrast to some of the people making comments, I actually have one of these forges and feel I can make an accurate assessment of its usefulness. In my humble opinion, this little forge is GREAT! I have been using mine several times a week for a couple months now and I have not had any problems with it. Obviously, it is not very large so I use mine to make J-hooks, S-hooks, tomahawk heads, belt buckles, etc. It easily gets hot enough to forge weld. If you're making bigger stuff this is not going to work. For the average hobbyist blacksmith, this thing will do what you need AND do it for under $100!

Picked up one of them as well. Still getting it put together but with any luck hope to have it going soon. I think they may have messed up on mine though as the regulator I got with it is for a 2 burner forge. No big deal as I have been building my own gas forges for a number of years now so I will just use one of the regulators I already have and will save this for a 2 burner that I have in the works. I do know what you mean about the price of gas forges "back in the day". That is what started me building my own.

I've even made a few forge welds with it. I sell a lot of hooks and things on etsy. Do you think that I would be able to increase production using this gas forge and if so would the increase in production be more than enough to pay for the additional cost of the propane.Thank you so much for all you do, I'm looking forward to building one of your power hammers. If you go full blast it's going to get hot quick but also suck the gas.. if you run low pressure It will take longer time to heat but sip your gas. It's always a balance And it's up to you to decide 🙂

Thanks for the review and tips. Putting in the stainless screws is a great idea. Ordered one of these, but it was stopped at the Canadian border. I don't know why?🤔😪

For your spot welds just drill some holes and use stainless pop rivets to work excellent

compared to the time to source materials and parts and fabricate a burner and shell (body?), $80+ is very affordable.
And for the valve assembly, it is simpler and safer to visualize with a straight inline valve. But if you consider the orientation with respect to the incoming gas supply hose, across is off.

Recommend that you advise customers to wear at least some sort of mask when opening and forming the kao wool product because it is HIGHLY dangerous if particles are inhaled - and the particles are released by just opening it up and forming it into the forge cavity. But, otherwise, this was pretty helpful information. I would have liked to see you showing the assembly process in more detail.

Do you think it would work to braze the burner port into place? I don't know how to weld and have a feeling that if I try to bore holes for fasters, I'll end up breaking the tack welds. The instructions say the shell can get as hot as 600°F in operation, well below the 840°F needed for brazing.

Honest question, and I'm sorry if you've gotten this question before, but I've only had experience with a coal forge for blade smithing, and I'm interested in trying my hand at forge welding, which I have not been able to do with much success. I recently messed around with some firebrick and a propane torch, and was able to get a weak forge weld on some single edge razor blades, and that made me thirsty for more. I just got some birthday funds and I'm considering buying one of these forges. Do you think the single burner will be hot enough to forge weld successfully, or would the two burner model be a better choice for me? I plan on forging blades that are 3" all the way up to about 20". Please advise if I'm being too ambitious. Love the channel, and God Bless.

I noticed your valve on your burner has a 90° bend in it to attach to the regulator and hose, I wonder why all of the ones they sell arent like that. Mine is just straight out the back and now seeing yours I think it'd sit much nicer with the 90° bend

I know that the instructions are only the manufacturers opinion of how to build it ........ but it is nice to see a "pro" both use them and recommend others to!
For $80 I imagine corners needed to be trimmed down to within an inch of their lives ..... You get what you pay for and you pay for what you get! What additions would you put on this forge other than the ones you mentioned?
I would say it is a good video ..... but they are ALL good! ;o)

Thank you for the kind words ☺️ for additions I will most likely buy some ITC 100 to coat it with And might change the regulator out for one with a pressure gauge (not needed) just so I can see the actual pressure I'm running At.. Thank you for watching

The yellow handle on the 1/4 turn gas valve is held on with a nut. Can you remove the nut and reposition the handle? By repositioning it 1/4 turn in either direction, it will meet your needs. Hopefully it is square or splined where the handle mounts onto the stem or it can easily be modified and not weaken its ability to resist torsion.

I got the slightly bigger two burner forge as a gift. My stainless steel case got a little beat up in shipping. A pop rivetter put everything snug. I had to straighten some of the metel but nothing major. In the process of drying the ridgedizer I blocked off the ends with the fire bricks....dang does that forge get hot, I kinda wondered if it got to forge welding temps. What I'm realizing is two burners are not necessarily better than one. I'm not better having two, I just burn twice as nuch propane. Theoreticaly I can heat longer pieces...but I'm not there yet. The two burner may be good, but there are real benefits to the single burner.
I used to think the mark up was high and that a cheaper one could be made in my shop until I started looking at the components online. I can't believe the company is making very much money off these or I'm seriously shopping at the wrong store.
The customer service of the Mr. Volcano company is top shelf. For this alone I am a return customer. When contacted, about the shipping issues, the company made it right. They are a fantastic company, and produce a nice product at a very fair price.

Don’t think there is anything like that available in OZ Roy! We can get kits to convert a 9KG gas cyl which is what I use but they are about 3 times that price and that’s allowing for the currency conversion!

Coal if you have Good access to it will always be the cheaper option vs gas but I can tell you this thing sips the gas for regular forging
