You aren’t going to get Pulmonary Silicosis from the lining, and I think that is great news! I was so worried for you! But, on a serious note, because you mentioned propane consumption I wondered if you were going ahead with coating the lining with Satanite or some other refractory for the sake of efficiency? If you do that, I hope you will make a video out of it comparing time to warm up, time to heat a piece to forging heat, outside temps, etc. Appreciate all your work over the years, and the dry sense of humor always makes my day a little better!
Whatever you do, don’t lick the lining of the forge. That can be deadly. Also important not to eat it. And don’t straddle or sit on it while the burner is on, or for many hours after it has been in use. Further, it should not be used for cooking food or boiling water for tea. Hopefully I haven’t missed anything! Stay safe!
When we had our first daughter, I wanted her name to be Crystalline Silica but we went with Aluminium Phosphide, instead. I'm not sure her teachers and fellow students really understand the impact that has on her life - we just gotta breathe through these things sometimes.
@@kz6fittycent Well, that’s an interesting question. I am not sure that anyone has ever done a study. If one was motivated, a study comparing a cohort of strangely named persons to a control group of people with names like Joe, and Susan, would be easy to design. Certainly there are rating scales in Psychology that provide metrics for self-esteem, like the Rosenberg Self Esteem Scale, and a wide range that measure depressive and anxiety symptoms. Though there are plenty of rating scales designed to measure personality dimensions, impacts upon personality development might be harder to tease out (excuse the pun). There is an established, normed, rating scale that can be used in Psychology called the Forms of Bullying Scale (FBS) which has versions designed to measure victimization called the FSB-V. In the end, the most difficult aspect might be finding a way to operationally define “weird” names that might impact a person’s psychological health. That may require the development of a new rating scale which would be difficult to norm….
Well I can tell you that it most certainly holds up over time. I imagine 1400+ knives/items forged in it over 2 years. Some fluting damage now around the burner housing but that is it. Probably the most incredible buy you will ever make in forging.
The only reason I use the satanite inside my forges is because of the refractory element. It seems to take less gas that way and once it's hot, it's really quick to reheat your piece.
I watched the Grammys recently to get some extra satanite, and was able to poor it straight out of the TV, into my forge. Looking forward to the next edition for some extra lining.

A place where I take classes and go to open forge nights has been using them for a year. They work great for small projects. Completely reliable. I got mine a bit over a year ago when they were still under $60. No problems at all. The Satanite still hasn't cracked. The rigidizer rigidized.
I bought one last year and I've nothing but great success with it. Even forged out several billets of Damascus. I would absolutely use the satanite lining because it will hold heat way better and give the forge a lot longer life. It's easy and very good stuff.
I have a hero volcano forge, not only does that ridgidizer and satanite supposedly keep you safe, it protects the blanket from any damage by bumping it with your stock when you use the forge. I've moved mine a bit and still no cracks, be a year in August. I also recommend adding screws or bolts to the seams because stainless steel likes warping. And a braided hose with a guage instead of the stock one they send with it.
Good choice, in my opinion. I have been using that forge for over a year now. I have gone thru over 100 gallons of propane, and it is still doing fine. I did use the refractory that came with it and after about the 3rd time of use, it started cracking. But, regardless, that forge works great. I have made hammers and tongs with it (among other things), but still have not tried to forge weld with it yet. The company does say it will weld though.
It will weld though it's size is limited. I use my Hell's Forge normally to forge weld but that is far less efficient. But I have even made canister in this bad boy.
Sees title "Why Is This $80 Forge So Controversial?" Probably because other 'experts' don't use it therefore = bad. I use the SIMOND STORE Propane Forge Double Burner, 2600 F and it’s only like 20$ more for more length and fire power and it has nice thick steel I live mine so I would take that into consideration when buying this although this one looks nice to
I bought the double burner and it worked amazing for about 1 month before the tack welds gave up. Ends of the burners will fall apart eventually but for the money you cant make one the same size. I have since taken the 2 burners off and used them in a DIY forge and it has made many many Damascus billets and blades. The coating they sent cracked away it 2 days plus I had to use all of it where they say use half and the rest for repairs. All in all it was more then worth the money and would recommend. Burners, hose, and pressure regulator would cost more then the whole setup if bought separate. If anyone is looking for a forge welding setup get the dual version. Well worth the money. Great review btw!
I have had this forge for 2 years. It’s a great compact forge. AND YES, IT WILL FORGE WELD. I’ve done cable Damascus, San Mai and standard Damascus. I do not have a power hammer so canister Damascus isn’t on my list.

I saw an german old movie about old german jobs that dies out, "The last of it´s stand (or the last of it´s kind? translated) - The file chopper" he use hardening powder by the hardening process, that the individual rasps of the file, will not burn off (perhaps also in knifemaking a great deal) and for extra Carbon for extra hardness. He also does not hardening the file in water or oil, he uses saltwater for greater thermalproperties that give faster the temperature off. When a file is bending by that process he only uses a little bit of his strength and bend it straigth again by using only a bit of water over it and the bending problem is solved. Perhaps you can do a vid of it. The main igrediance of the hardening powder is cookingsalt, Charcoal dust, horn meal (flour) and also rubbing flour (that is the flour that falls in mills on the ground and would extra sold for such old Craft businesses. And the cleansing off of the powder he do with an very old technique who did craftmans over generations, he do in Dilute hydrochloric acid, than brushing, than water baths and than an oil bath as rust protection. And as last woring step 4 seconds in 740 degree celsius hot lead bath, only with the angle, this softens the material again so that it does not glaze and break. This job is died out in our times, cause in old times material was more worth than working time and now it is the opposite.

Taking the peanut gallery head-on was a new level of greatness, and I'm happy to see you're not cowering to the faceless keyboard warriors. Keep up the great content.
It's shocking that they can sell something that can get this hot. I am deeply offended by anything that can reach temperatures of over 120F / 40C. I demand to see the manager!!!
Dude you're legend! This little $80 forge is for those who wanna try out forging and don't wanna spend a fortune. Also this thing is safer then 90% of the videos on TH-cam showing people how to build a homemade forge period. People act as if technology doesn't exist also people run at the mouth before actually researching a product they wanna bash all over. Now this isn't the best option of course it's not, but it is a good option for a beginner with proper steps making sure is all safe like propane leaks as you stated.
Personally, for second-hand safety violation thrills, I prefer the videos involving high-voltage applications like the ones demonstrating how to burn a fractal pattern into a heavy plank of wood by running current through it. Nothing says “safety” like rigging up your own extremely high-voltage setup in your garage or basement based on a YooToob video! Now, sitting down with one of those videos, reading the comments and imagining the possibilities for calamity, is really the height of entertainment.
Dear Mr. Outdoorfiftyfives, While watching your "video" I just happened to be enjoying a box of raisins which were, by chance, from California. The "scene" where you lit the "flame" on your "death forge" frightened my cat, Snowflake who then leaped wildly about like a "rabid gazelle" causing me to aspirate a "raisin" into my left lung. By the time you "read" this I will very likely be "dead". I hope you're "happy".
Ah bro Alex! I just love when you “Boom mic drop” all the naysayers and safety Sallies. You just keep doing you and you have my support. Stay safe bud!
I have this forge, and its held up fine so far. I put the rigidizer, and satanite on it came with, and it did crack like you would expect over time, but it comes with extra to patch that up. The big thing i did though was line the inside with ht100 coating to help with efficiency. Of course i keep fire brick blocking the back, and part of the front also. It will get up to forge welding temps, but it definitely blows through gas getting there. Im wanting to modify it to take a small ribbon burner, i think i can get even better efficiency if i did that. As well as get more even heating. All in all, its a good forge. Especially for the price.
I got one last year for my first forge. Love it. Definitely could be better but for less than $100 I couldn't make one much better. But it taught me the basics and what to do for the one I'm going to make
I didn't know those mini forges have gotten so cheap! You're going to butt heads with the safety nuts no matter what you're doing. It's just the nature of social media and your job. I was more interested in how well this hot box gets hot, and it seems to do that, especially since I'm just a weekend hobbyist that might fire it up once a month. I am also interested in how you mount your anvil, when you get around to that.
I think I'm going to order just a burner for $24. I have a stationary furnace I use with a home made burner, but for a little over twenty bucks I might give that one to try. Ian has no problem melting copper as it is, which is mostly what I do to make aluminum bronze.
I love my forge. Disconnect the burner from the top of the forge. Once you stop burning, the heat rises in a chimney effect. Saves in equipment. Great forge for the money and great video. Keep them coming sir. Also, I would also like the anvil stand video video if you make one.
I bought one a month ago (Hero 2) it actually works awesome, obviously rubber lines aren't ideal. BTW definitely put the satanite in the forge, because I said so 😊. It gets hot, well beyond heat treatment temps.
@@OUTDOORS55 absolutely, but what I tried in my DIY version for more insulation was fiberglass. I filed that under what I call “Retroactively Obvious.” Not a bad furnace at all for the price, and I am jealous of how much nicer the stainless steel burner looks than the one I made out of iron pipe. I used an old-type propane tank for the body, and added some thermocouples to monitor temperatures. It was a fun build, but I haven’t used it much since.
I have a similar one, it came with refractory cement to spread all over the insulation. It didn't come with rigidizer and I am impatient so I just went with the cement and it has held up great.
I'm guessing things got a little hot in the previous post's comments. Pun intended. Seems like a nice beginner spot and I'm glad you provided the company's safety information. While I wouldn't yell "OMG, It's unsafe," I probably wouldn't buy one without the safety info, and knowing that it is made in the USA.
Great video as usual, I've had one of these forges for a little over a year now and it works great. Still alive to tell about it too. I do have bricks to block the openings. That really helps in about every aspect.
Have you checked out Essential Craftsman's quick forge? He uses some angle iron and fire brick with a store bought burner. He puts it together with all-thread and it looks pretty skookum. It looks like a great way to get into forging.
Interesting fact: A Panther Martin fishing lure is known to cause cancer in the state of California. I can't imagine the scenario where someone survives ingesting 500 treble hooks and then decades later the painted lures cause a cancer, but how can we not appreciate California's deep concern for health and safety? 😷
Seems great, wish the shipping cost to New Zealand wasn't more than the product :/ Still using your knife from a file as a guide and have made some great throwing knives for myself, so thanks Alex :) Especially as we have ridiculous knife laws here, so if I want anything fun I gotta make it... I don't suppose you could make a video around making a file throwing knife... (so slightly higher toughness and shock adsorption, over hardness and edge retention) but still done without the "traditional normalizing, forging, quenching....", just (if or) how the process, particularly the softening/annealing in the oven and how that process might change with a knife for that application.... You'll probably never see this but I gotta add that you turned knives from an interest/passion into an actual hobby and thing I can do, and as I lost my last profession/whole life when I got arthritis in my spine this and knife throwing has become my life in a way, sad as that sounds now I read it... but thanks anyway, your channel has been my barometer for it their bullshit youtubers who make most of their knife off screen... or decent makers just trying to show their interest and help others find a passion, ie' you :)
Thanks for your review of this unit. Just bought it and wondering how much forging time you get out of a 20lb propane tank. I have a few already and just curious.
Yo, you got the same foldable miter saw table I got. That thing is awesome, I roll mine out into the yard make my cuts fold it up and put it back. Keeps my shop clean and it’s quick and easy.
Are you certain that the claim of the no silica release isn't based off of using the red hardener and the coating? You'd think it would be easy to say it doesn't emit fibers when the blanket is completely coated in the sealant and Crete mix
⭕️ ... after 8 months now... how's it working out for ya? ... seriously contemplating purchasing it, and wondering if it heats up enough to do the heat treatment (non magnetic) still or if there's consumables i should order along with it... thanks brother
Linenthe insdies with some fire brick to resolve the problems with warping and the silica particles, seal the back if you need to and boom even better forge
To even consider putting a unit like this one here together of this level of quality for the dollars this little baby costs right out of the box would be a total waste of time and effort. Just to be sure I'm gonna dig in to be sure it includes all the burner hardware in this modest price . Thanks for another good use of Tyme and effort showing this product to us all . Always straight forward an to the point !!! With homemade firebrick from perlite and gypsum which can be used in so so many ways to modd this unit Idd be a task to go wrong !!! Cheers and Peaceful Comfort to you !!! """""Another Winner in the Bucket !!!
Thanks for another WELL DONE video! I suspect this will not get up to forge welding temperature - at least not very quickly, so in your opinion (or anyone else's?) could this be adapted to a small air-assisted ribbon burner? Has anyone tried to adapt this or other small kit unit to a ribbon burner? Sorry if that is a dumb question. As you probably know, those are super hot. Thanks again!
Silly Sally cooments😂😂 that’s hilarious. I have the 2 burner mr volcano. They work great. Usually just use one burner but nice to have the option. Love the videos man, do you have any sword sharpening videos? I need to sharpen my katana. Seems like it will be a very long process.
Hey bud been watching your channel for a while now. I bought one similar but made in India and I love it. I've ran it through a few heat cycles so far forging a couple gyuto blades and I've only gotten a little discoloration on the bottom where I blocked off the back like you did. I also painted the inside with the satanite. Keep up the good video's!
Yeah, I don't know about the safety of that thing. Personally, I've found forges to be pretty dangerous without adding hysteria to the mix. I wouldn't want that one because it's completely open unless I modify it. If I were to modify it, I'd probably just build something that suits me better. Like the one I have currently. I do have to say that it might be a good option if you're broke. That's just my take on it.
Did you ever notice that for some reason, on the internet particularly, there seem to be a lot of us broke people looking to start banging on hot metal? It’s hysterical. Also, have you ever noticed that each person hitting up the blacksmithing forums with questions about building a “beginner” forge is busy reinventing the wheel from scratch? We all seem to start out with some idea about how we are going to do it _just_ a little bit different. What’s hysterical about that is the frustration that causes experienced people who patrol those forums just waiting to share their divine knowledge with the unenlightened. If you ever wanted to troll a bunch of grouchy old blacksmiths that is absolutely the way to do it! Personally, I think everybody who has any desire to, should build at least one forge from start to finish. It’s a fun project. Inevitably, you learn a lot along the way, researching it and thinking it through. As in my case, there is an added benefit that you get to see the reason nobody does it the way you thought of isn’t because no one ever thought of doing it that way. It can give you a better perspective on a profession that’s thousands of years old. Cheers!
@@ColdHawk I feel exactly the same way! My first forge was a menace to gods and man, but it was MINE! LoL yeah, same thing with machine tools. I thought i was king of the world the first time I turned a shoulder in a part then reality set in. For me, it's seeing the progression of my skills in metal working that makes it worth doing, as well as making useful things. You might not believe it, but my grandfather was a machinist and he was a cranky old fart. He never taught anyone anything if he could help it. Personally, I've never been to any sort of forum. I've got a youtube diploma in metal working 😁
I can't tell if this is video is just him trying to fit as many jokes as he can in this video or if that just happened on accident. Good job. Greetings from the Netherlands.
Another GREAT Video......THANKS! I've searched your vids and cannot find one on your oven. Believe you've mentioned having one, several times, in other vids. ???? Have you done anything with 14C28N?
Hey, I actually was looking at these awhile ago when I became interested in trying to start out smithing and blade forging. I didn't get it, in the end, because I didn't really know how well it would actually perform, so I'm pretty excited to see you using one. I'm curious if you think this would be the best (or at least a good) choice for a complete newbie to get into the scene. Of course I'll also need to get an anvil, hammer and tongs, the propane tank, e.t.c. but that all seems much more attainable if the forge itself is this cheap.
Yeah it's definitely a good option for starting out. You could spend another $40 and get the dual burner but if all you're doing is smaller stuff its more than capable.
If safety is always the biggest concern when making/building then a lot would not be made/build because there's no way to make it 100% safe. You could not even drive your car to work( you could crash) or prepare food( you could cut yourself).
The link to this forge is in the description. I have no affiliation with this company, and paid for it with my own money. Thanks for watching🙂

I use this forge for my hobby knife making. I close off one opening. It works great for me.
Hi Mike how are you doing. Have a nice Sunday 😊
Dear Mr. Outdoorfiftyfives,
While watching your "video" I just happened to be enjoying a
box of raisins which were, by chance, from California. The "scene"
where you lit the "flame" on your "death forge" frightened my cat, Snowflake
who then leaped wildly about like a "rabid gazelle" causing me to aspirate a "raisin"
into my left lung. By the time you "read" this I will very likely be "dead". I hope
you're "happy".
RIP in Peace 😔
If this makes my coffee too hot and I spill it on myself, they better have some deep pockets.
But it taught me the basics and what to do for the one I'm going to make
Shop is looking good bro. Looks like you got some lighting coming soon
Everything is roughed in. Just waiting to drop $700 on lights 😬😂
@@OUTDOORS55 oh boy that's a lot ! Whatcha doing growing weed in there too ! Lol jk
Don't worry. Prudence the Safety Goat is standing by.
I think I'm going to order just a burner for $24. I have a stationary furnace I use with a home made burner, but for a little over twenty bucks I might give that one to try. Ian has no problem melting copper as it is, which is mostly what I do to make aluminum bronze.
Hi Keith how are you doing. Have a nice Sunday 😊
Pro tip - actual fiberglass insulation melts much sooner than you might expect.
It's not fiberglass, it's ceramic👍
@@OUTDOORS55 absolutely, but what I tried in my DIY version for more insulation was fiberglass. I filed that under what I call “Retroactively Obvious.”
Not a bad furnace at all for the price, and I am jealous of how much nicer the stainless steel burner looks than the one I made out of iron pipe. I used an old-type propane tank for the body, and added some thermocouples to monitor temperatures. It was a fun build, but I haven’t used it much since.
@@OUTDOORS55 what melted was pink, had a paper backing, and said Owens Corning.
What worked well was a white fiber mat of Kaolin.
Simple system work for a list of people.cheers
What are the age restrictions on this Forge. I’m looking for my 2 year old daughter so she can forge switchblades.
Hi how are you doing. Have a nice Sunday 😊
I have a similar one, it came with refractory cement to spread all over the insulation. It didn't come with rigidizer and I am impatient so I just went with the cement and it has held up great.
Controversial? Count me in! Im going to make one before even watching the video
I love the line “especially if you live in the state of California” lol
I was given one and recently assembled it. Planning on firing it up this weekend, if that's OK with the Safety Sallys!
What is the surface you are resting the forge on? Concrete board?
Hi
I'm guessing things got a little hot in the previous post's comments. Pun intended. Seems like a nice beginner spot and I'm glad you provided the company's safety information. While I wouldn't yell "OMG, It's unsafe," I probably wouldn't buy one without the safety info, and knowing that it is made in the USA.
Looking forward to seeing the worshop setup. 👍
Great video as usual, I've had one of these forges for a little over a year now and it works great. Still alive to tell about it too. I do have bricks to block the openings. That really helps in about every aspect.
Awesome, I never win anything!
Have you checked out Essential Craftsman's quick forge? He uses some angle iron and fire brick with a store bought burner. He puts it together with all-thread and it looks pretty skookum. It looks like a great way to get into forging.
Great video! I'm gonna get me one. I need a smaller forge especially with that new fire blanket. Good job!
Interesting fact: A Panther Martin fishing lure is known to cause cancer in the state of California. I can't imagine the scenario where someone survives ingesting 500 treble hooks and then decades later the painted lures cause a cancer, but how can we not appreciate California's deep concern for health and safety? 😷
Seems great, wish the shipping cost to New Zealand wasn't more than the product :/
Still using your knife from a file as a guide and have made some great throwing knives for myself, so thanks Alex :)
Especially as we have ridiculous knife laws here, so if I want anything fun I gotta make it...
Would you advise the use of a respirator while using this forge?
Quick question: can you harden rebar? I saw you forging with it and I was just a little curious.
That is a good option for someone like myself who is wanting to get into knife making without breaking the bank.
Is breathing permitted in California? Can’t be worse than an Ohio train wreck that the government assures everyone is completely safe.
The government knows what's best 👍😑
Yo, you got the same foldable miter saw table I got. That thing is awesome, I roll mine out into the yard make my cuts fold it up and put it back. Keeps my shop clean and it’s quick and easy.
It is true, fibers are like 20 times more dangerous in california thats why they passed all those laws.
Are you certain that the claim of the no silica release isn't based off of using the red hardener and the coating? You'd think it would be easy to say it doesn't emit fibers when the blanket is completely coated in the sealant and Crete mix
Read the paper in the video
⭕️ ... after 8 months now... how's it working out for ya? ... seriously contemplating purchasing it, and wondering if it heats up enough to do the heat treatment (non magnetic) still or if there's consumables i should order along with it... thanks brother
Linenthe insdies with some fire brick to resolve the problems with warping and the silica particles, seal the back if you need to and boom even better forge
what is the board that the forge is sitting on?
Yo what's up man ! Hope all is well . Thanks for making this video because I'm super interested
Sure thing!
Cali resident here. This video is HILARIOUS! Cali is an h hole. Help.
When you checked for leaks... That didn't look like certified safety leak-detect-water. I'ma tell your mom!
Hi how are you doing. Have a nice Sunday 😊
Silly Sally cooments😂😂 that’s hilarious. I have the 2 burner mr volcano. They work great. Usually just use one burner but nice to have the option. Love the videos man, do you have any sword sharpening videos? I need to sharpen my katana. Seems like it will be a very long process.
"Made in America with global materials" usually means "parts made in china, assembled in america".
Greetings my friend! Thanks for stopping by👍
Another GREAT Video......THANKS! I've searched your vids and cannot find one on your oven. Believe you've mentioned having one, several times, in other vids. ???? Have you done anything with 14C28N?
Love the extra time on the fun bits 💪🏼☺️
That cool i didn’t know they had lining like that
Thank you, Alex!
thank you for this video
it answered two questions i had
Coating the wool helps it last longer. Yes it cracks but it doesn't matter at all.
I keep a piece of the insulation under the forge it lself because mine got hot enough to warp the steel table I have it sitting on lol.
"Yesbody was supposed to own this." Lol. Great video! Keep up the good work.
I really want to take 3 of these burners and put them into my own forge design ...
Biggest reason I use satanite is the extra insulation I can achieve higher temps for forge welding which were not possible without it
You had me rolling, good stuff my friend.
Awesome video. Good info here. The California bits were solid gold 😆 👌
Can I treat Damascus in here?
Nice look anvil! What is it?
battle cry of Darwin award winners "SAFETY THIRD!"
More like read the instructions before operating.
The California reference was really funny
"Don't do what Donny don't does." I think that covers it. :)
That’s the standard furnace lining you find in a large forge shop
Just bought this. Your videos pushed me over the edge. Thank you! Going to ruin a whole lotta metal lol.
If safety is always the biggest concern when making/building then a lot would not be made/build because there's no way to make it 100% safe. You could not even drive your car to work( you could crash) or prepare food( you could cut yourself).
I don't know about U.S. but in Canada if you buy "product of Canada "it's supposed to be at least 80 or 90 % in Canada
Excellent video on a VERY interesting product! Thank you for sharing! :-)
I'd love one but it's more than double the price in the UK £196!!!
Thank you
Nice shop SKS. 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Yay I was waiting for this vid🔥
