First 8 mins of this video is all about the tool and prep and why I chose EQT maps and COBB based system. Around 8:15 I start of the process of flashing the car. Then a test drive!
To anyone watching this, DO NOT DO THE DSG RELEARN UNLESS YOU'RE HAVING ISSUES. I did the DSG relearn right after installing the DSG tune, and now my gearbox is making grinding and clicking noises every time my car downshifts. I hit up EQT, and they said that I should not have done the DSG relearn, and it should only be done if there is a problem after installing the DSG tune, which they also said very seldom occurs. They said the best I can do is bring it to the shop, get my DSG fluid changed out, and pray that the transmission fixes itself.
Did the recommendations change? I didn't just do it to do it, it used to be part of the procedure. And to be done when the DSG is at optimal operating temp, which can take a long drive with lots of gear changes to achieve in cold temps.
@@netcruzer It could have recently changed with new updates. On their FAQ they do state in writing not to do the relearn unless you're experiencing issues.

Great video! I have a ‘19 GTI DSG and am shopping for tunes. Can you elaborate more on how you chose EQT? I’m interested because of the Cobb unit and all that entails, however, several company do that, so why EQT? Please and thank you!
When I was researching I saw EQT was making most powerful and safest ‘base’ staged tunes. The EQT tuner Ed Susman has posts all over on forums and FB groups answering questions and helping out others. Plus EQT was giving free tunes last month with AP purchase, including their brand new 2.0 tune. Before 2.0 tune came out, I found no bad news about EQT tunes. This new 2.0 is amazingly good, but has the Cobb LC bug plus they are super busy from the sale backlog of orders so I’m still waiting on 2.01. Anyway, I’m very happy with EQT so far. I am Canadian and it was hard to not choose Canadian like Stratified Tuning, but in the end I chose EQT.
Netcruzer RC TECH CARS Thank you for the speedy reply. I really appreciate your honest opinion and presentation. I’m definitely more interested in EQT because of your video. How do I flash my 2019 golf r back to oem before flashing stage 2 tune ? I bought my car with a custom tune and idk how to use the AP to reflash car back to stock
You don’t need to remove a tune first if it’s from a Cobb AP. Just install the new stage 2 tune with the AP. To totally remove a tune you uninstall the accessport, when then restores OEM ECU and unmarries the AP for resale. But you don’t need to do that.
Quick question, I have a 12amp battery charger but my cobb says required a 20amp battery charger should I stick with it or should I get a higher amp charger?
12 amp is fine, I don’t know why they ask for such a high amp rating. I use a smart battery charger I have no idea how many amps it provides, likely not many it charges batteries overnight.
Hi do you happen to still have the Cobb dsg maps on your computer or have you only kept the specific for your dsg type? I am after the older dsg files for a 6speed dsg current Cobb files doesn’t not work with my dsg.
I have a DQ381 7 speed DSG. Cobb AP doesn’t work with DSG unless you pay for transmission flashing ability. I don’t have anything for the 6 speed as far as I know.
How many amps does your battery tender provide? Would a 4-5amp battery tender be good enough or is it recommended to have a 10amp one? Thanks and great video!
I don’t know. 10A sounds like a lot, you just need a maintainer not a full charger. And I risked doing this without it. If the car had been parked for days prior I would put on a fender/charger.
If I have coded the engine stop/start to be permanently disabled and to have the exhaust valves open at all times using an obd11 device, would that be an issue when flashing to cobb ots stage 1?
Thank you for doing this. Also, nooooooooooooooooo. I guess I'm gonna sit on the EQT site until another sale comes up. But, do I want to risk my GTI's warranty? Hmmm...Did you have JB4 on this before the EQT Cobb? What are your thoughts feelings on going JB4 until my warranty doesn't matter? Or APR+ tune?
I had Neuspeed Power Module piggyback before EQT. That was like a JB1. I ran that for almost 5 years across two MK7 cars (GTI, now an R), so I was ready to take the plunge into a real ECU tune. Yes you might have more of a power train warranty fight if something fails, but after owning an EA888.3 engine across two cars I felt confident in flash tuning it. I’m doing full flash tune on an R because I can actually put the power down and it has stronger internals. On GTI it would wheel and axle hop from piggyback tune so I felt a full tune was a waste. My GTI was non powerpack non e-diff so yours will be better.
@@netcruzer Right on, I need to do a ton more research. I'm glad to hear the EA888.3 performs so well and is largely reliable. I'm getting wheel hop from stock (only using launch control). I def need better tires, that'll help a significant amount.
