Checking out the Hogue Deka now in magnacut vs. the original in 20cv. #knife #edcgear #knives #edc #edclife #knifelife #Magnacut #20cv #Hogue #HogueDeka
I have very little experience with Magnacut so far, just a Curtiss F3 in it currently and commissioning another semi custom in it currently. My issue with 20CV and M390 is that these steels tend to microchip when used and resharpened regularly. I prefer a steel that rolls instead of microchipping, and so far Magnacut SEEMS like it will fill this role for me. Time will tell. Great on paper, we’ll see if the real world results support the spec sheet.
Yeah the magnacut Deka is better then the 20cv but I still think Hogue could have done the Magnacut better because they did a better job with on the Ritter Hogue
@@bladeswithbill To be fair, we are still in the early-early days of Magnacut. Makers are going to go by Crucible's recommendations for the steel for now, but as they get more experience with the steel the heat treats will evolve and improve. I'm sure Hogue is still figuring out how best to treat the stuff, as are a bunch of other makers. I'm looking forward to seeing how it performs, and what direction it takes the industry for future steels as well. A high toughness stainless that still holds a darn good edge is like a dream come true for me, so I'm quite curious to see how steels evolve from here.
@@I_Might_B_Wrong I can't agree more but I also think some of the stuff we buy isn't as good as it could be and it been around a while. So I just don't companies to just think it's OK to just give us whatever and not actually make sure it's what it should be. But I do understand that most companies buy it from a maker but they should be holding the makers accountable
@@bladeswithbill That's very true. I have slowly gravitated away from many production makers and toward all Midtech and Custom blades since the makers tend to put more thought intp improving their products over time. Getting close to starting my own channel at this point so that at least I can tell my wife I'm not just spending the money for myself lol
What's strange is that the metallurgist and creator of CPM Magnacut rates its edge retention at a 5/10, compared to 20CV at a 7/10. It seems real-world results don't always agree, and I'm really curious as to why.
So the MagnaCut Deka is hardened to 62-64hrc, whereas the 20CV is 59-61. When you heat treat harder, aka to a higher hrc, you sacrifice some toughness and ease of sharpening for more edge retention. MagnaCut is inherently a much tougher steel than 20CV. So, you can kind of cheat by doing a higher heat treat. You could also theoretically give it a keener edge to tradeoff a little more toughness for more edge retention. Pete over at Cedric & Ada had similar results testing the same steels from Spyderco instead of Hogue, although the differences were more pronounced. I don't think he changed anything about the edge grinds, though.
Mostly because when companies heat treat the steel that don't do it to manufacturer specs and leave it a little soft to make it easier and cheaper for them to work with.
Cut testing with 20cv from hogue is poor performance m390 and 20cv. The magnacut at 62 from hogue is what the 20cv should perform at, but unfortunately couldn't stack up against in outpost76 testing. So really glad they went with magnacut. I've been avoiding the 20cv and m390 since they were tested poorly (many times with many samples). Do you know what batch this magnacut was from? Earlier batches were poorly done, some later batches were done at 62rc and were decent and current batches are good and from 62-64rc.
@@SimonRiley115 he tested several hogue in magnacut and 20cv. Which one in particular are you talking about? 20cv and m390 should perform I'm the 330+ range and 62rc magnacut also should perform in the 300+ range also.
@Tactical Center purty sure I watched them all, I've been researching magnacut since it came out and so far it hasn't been living up to the hype, the difference between 20cv and magnacut as far as edge retention isn't anything more than the difference between apex angle, you might get slightly better corrosion resistance with magnacut but even magnacut at 65hrc is going to be have the same toughness as 20cv at 62. I like them both but coated s90v or maxamet is still my favorite when it comes to edge retention
@@SimonRiley115 yeah I'm wanting to get some s90v to check out, I hear great things about it. But yeah sadly magnacut doesn't seem to be any better then 20cv
I am still trying to figure out if I have a favorite steel. It was probably S90v, if it arrived sharp from the manufacturer, because I wasn’t sharpening my knives until a few months ago and wanted edge retention. I had the Para 3 Maxamet but it chipped up quickly so I didn’t want to carry it. I bought a Worksharp Precision Adjust Elite and then became proficient at using it and suddenly most of the knives I thought had a good edge suddenly didn’t feel sharp anymore. I got the Maxamet blade back in order and every steel below it has been fairly easy to sharpen. I have since donated the Para3 to a Facebook friend who lost his collection. My nemesis has been Rex121! I have a custom folder with a 3” blade of the stuff. It is an axis lock knife sort of like a Bugout but the blade is almost double the thickness, it is a nice chunk of Rex! I only had to sharpen it because I read that above 66hrc can cut glass and this blade tested at 70.5hrc. I used an old Mason jar to test out that theory. It sure did cut through the glass but the edge was chipped afterwards! I have spent the past month trying to get an edge back on it! Just last night did I get it good enough to slice junk mail paper without tearing it but I still have work to do for a finer edge. Sorry for the rambling on. I bought the first Magnacut Hogue that SMKW came out with that had the blue carbon fiber scales. But, it was during a knife buying frenzy so I have hardly carried it. I also have a couple Magnacut folders from the same custom maker that made me the Rex folder and a Magnacut tanto Small Sebenza. The custom guy got a little over 63hrc on his blades and the Sebenza claims 63-64. Well, I have had to sharpen both, the custom because I didn’t like the edge it came with and the Sebenza because a couple chips popped up. The custom was almost as hard to sharpen as Maxamet but the Sebenza was like sharpening 8cr! So either Chris Reeves isn’t actually hitting the numbers they claim or the edge was just softer than the rest of the blade and I will hit harder steel as I continue to use and sharpen it. So I am just not sure what my favorite steel is at the moment. The Magnacut, D2, 20cv, M390, and Elmax blades I have sharpened haven’t gone dull yet and are holding up great. I like them all so far. It could also have something to do with the fact that I own around 250 folders and carry a different batch each day, so it will be a long time before I use any enough to dull them again. Sorry once again for the long rambling post, it is what happens when you are retired and spent your days alone, in the country, just me and my animals. I have a wife but she works each day at her medical practice. Just laying that out there so you don’t think I am a sad old man all alone all the time. 😊
Yeah I'm not sure what my favorite steel is but I haven't got a chance to use a bunch of different steels. Pro-Tech Runt 5 in Magnacut is pretty good. I differently took more time and felt harder on the sharpener, I also use the WorkSharp Precision Adjust Pro
@@bladeswithbill When I first bought the sharpener I was thinking it was going to be a piece of cake but I quickly learned otherwise. At least for me! I actually tried on a couple crappy bugout clones at first and couldn’t get an edge so I gave up for a little while. Then one day I went back at it and it started coming to me and now I am not afraid to try any steel. The worst part is that now almost every new knife I buy feels like it has a bad edge, even my 3 Shirogorov folders were bad! All but one of my CR knives had a good edge. It was an S45 Small Sebenza and that steel sharpened like soft butter too! I am weary of CR’s hrc ratings! I have 8cr Chinese clones that were harder to sharpen than that S45! My two S125 bladed knives from Andrey Biryukov came razor sharp as did my Rocksteads but they better have arrived sharp, that is what the brand is based around! I have 8 Medford’s and only the Praetorian Genesis T in S90v had a bad edge. It was a little tough to sharpen but it has a great edge now, one of my sharpest edges so far and on a relativity thick blade.

well,it's to early to say how the magnacut will hold up,but otherwise I'm very happy with theclip point deka I received-Ive actually come to prefer a 3.25 to 3..5 in blade for my edc,it's just more practical for my uses-you have more control over the point, then with larger blades. For self defence, unfortunately in my neck of the woods, you better have a gun, because your attacker will most likely have one
