  • Is it possible Doug has a movie he's changed his mind on? Maybe he sees why this film works better than he originally thought. Doug takes another look at Zootopia.
Zootopia is a 2016 American 3D computer-animated buddy cop comedy film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures. It is the 55th Disney animated feature film. It was directed by Byron Howard and Rich Moore, co-directed by Jared Bush, and stars the voices of Ginnifer Goodwin, Jason Bateman, Idris Elba, Jenny Slate, Nate Torrence, Bonnie Hunt, Don Lake, Tommy Chong, J. K. Simmons, Octavia Spencer, Alan Tudyk, and Shakira.

I think a lot of people across the spectrum miss the point of Zootopia. It's not a simple parable - it explores the idea that power relationships are very complex and contextual, and can't be boiled into a simple "predator vs. prey", or, in our world, "black vs. white".
I'm especially fond of the fact that the movie follows Tolkien's rule about applicability instead of allegory: no group in the movie is a direct analogue for any group in the real world, and any attempt to make them such fails on analysis. Instead, the movie shuffles and remixes the issues that allows us to explore them independently of real-world relationships.

    • @jacobmonks3722
      @jacobmonks3722 5 ปีที่แล้ว +24

Great point. I even said myself that the movie makes just as much sense if you think of the predators as white people and the prey as minority groups. Because of how complicated and back and forth the social relationship is, no group in the movie is decidedly representative of any real life social group.

    • @Robobagpiper
      @Robobagpiper 5 ปีที่แล้ว +28

Moreover, if you look at the really powerful (the cops), they're a mix of predator & prey - that category is irrelevant to them. The power indicator for them is that they're the largest animals. And there's a differential relationship between the "prey" animals in the countryside vs. the "prey" animals in the city.
That's what makes this so brilliant; because you can take any two real world groups in a power relationship and relate them to the various animal groups and make a valid point - and then swap those relationships between the RL groups and the groups in the movie, and make a different valid point.

This is important and it’s why I get frustrated every time there are criticisms based on people trying to make it allegorical. It never fits exactly right and they explain this as a failing of the movie rather than a deliberate choice. It was a good idea for them to not have the prejudices in the movie align perfectly with the real world. That makes it more universal and timeless - any person can see themselves in any part of the social structures at any given time.

@@TheDen-ec9xe It's not about racism, but prejudice. There's a big difference there. It also doesn't really 'condemn' anything, rather it shiws how we all can be biased without realizing it, and tries to present a solution (looking for those who stoke the flames of hatred).
Using this movie as an analogy, you can represent nearly any group with either the predator or prey groups, and still have a valid comparison.
For example, you can use race, and say either group represents blacks, whites, Asians, Middle Easterners, etc. Or, you can use religious groups, where you could have them represent Jews, Muslims, Hindus, Christians, etc. In fact, you could even make an argument comparing it to situations like Charlottesville, where the "predators" (minority) were the alt-right protestors, the "prey"(majority) were the counter-protestors, and the "mayor/nightcrawlers" which made people violent were Antifa and the extremist neonazis.
Tl;dr - It's mainly about prejudice, not racism.

What I really like about this movie is how it doesn’t even target anyone. I mean, real people on which political side they are on. Surprisingly it addresses a serious issue even in our real society and it doesn’t throw the blame or even hides who is behind it all. But it addresses it in the most natural and human way possible. Honestly, I’m glad this film wasn’t meant to target anyone but rather explains to us on why people can be racist or prejudicial in a open audience manner. People aren’t are born with hate in their hearts and sometimes people have their reasons to think down upon others. In my opinion the very root of racism, is misunderstanding. We often perceive our experiences as worse than others and that would lead us to grow resentful of those who we think have it better. Just because I’m a white male doesn’t automatically make me the standard racist. Racism goes both ways people, and it will remain an issue as long as we continue to blame and point at who we suspect is the cause of it. People like MLK not once has ever claimed that racism was rooted by a single race. Gandhi said “Humanity is a vast ocean, just because there are a few specks of dirt, it doesn’t make the whole ocean dirty.”. We as humans are always quick to judge and we can most of the time be stubborn about it. I think the idea that having Judy bear a itty bitty pit of prejudice within herself is flat-out exactly what people need to see. NO ONE IS PERFECT OR PURE, but that doesn’t mean we can’t strive for such a goal. But just because Judy has that prejudicial sense doesn’t make her a bad guy, we relate to why she has developed such a sense because of her past experiences. The issue is when we let that sense of prejudice cloud our judgment and control how we think, listen, speak, and even act.
It doesn’t matter who is the racist or which group is, the important thing is that we don’t allow ourselves to become corrupt by such thoughts and even beliefs. It doesn’t matter whether you’re Left, Right, or Independent, because racism wasn’t created by someone or some group, or even a nation. It is created within each of us. Nobody is at fault because how can you blame human nature itself when you are just as human as the rest of us.
I absolutely love how Zootopia could’ve easily just message out that ‘Racism is evil’ and make a nice profit, but instead it actually tries to explain such bits of our nature and dives deep into it. It does present what racism causes within a community, but it also explains that this argument is not a matter of good vs. evil. People have their reasons and even those reasons can be understandable when we actually take the time to think about them. Racism is built out of misunderstandings and fear. You can argue that it is also built out of greed and you can be correct, but in today’s society, I don’t think that’s the case.

Zoltan Z I’m conservative and I never ever considered that, racism is not based off of political ideology, it comes from us individually. It becomes a serious issue for a community when a group of such belief decide to rally and practice such belief. It is just as racist as victimizing yourself based on skin color as it is thinking of yourself racially superior over others. Like I said, it goes both ways.
Just because your ancestors went through something doesn’t mean that YOU shared their suffering or that anybody owes you anything out of the past. Both political sides have racist groups of their own.
What this movie is trying to tell us is where racism comes and why. It’s not trying to tell people to victimize themselves because that will not contribute anything to the fight on racism. What we need to do is unite as one and stop living in a ‘us vs them’ mindset.

Are we hypocrites or something? 🤔 Maybe not, the way we act in some situations with someone is determined in a lot of cases by our education, by the way our parents or relatives bring us up. So, I hope parents will stop thinking "Disney movies are for kids" and understand that Disney movies like these are for everyone, everyone must change and learn!

I support the notion that a strong character has to be flawed/have weaknesses in some way. It is this flaw that stirs inner conflict and forces the characters to grow (character development).
Judy here appears to be our standard Disney protagonist, naively optimistic, ready to go make the world a better place. But she does have that same flaw that has caused her so much harm, and she didn't even realize it. Much like real people.
Prejudices often have some truth to them. It isn't any -ism to say that. The -ism is to apply that prejudice to an invidual.
I'd like to mention that Zootopia isn't about racism. It is not an allegory.

Would it be controversial for me to say that I actually find "Zootopia" to be a modern masterpiece? Why? Because not only is the world building huge and impressive, but the film through its story is a reflection of real life -- as seen through the lens of anthropomorphic animals. In many ways, it feels like a modern Aesop Fable featuring predator/prey dichotomy and it's beautifully executed. It also feels like a multi-genre film -- a sort of police drama, whodunnit mystery, political thriller, action comedy, kids film that adults can watch and enjoy. I think part of the ambitious nature of this film is not just that "prejudice is bad", but that it can come from well-intentioned places and frames of mind. It approaches it psychologically rather than at face value. Not to mention the main characters are very likeable, relatable, well-developed, and all around cute (with such great casting too). In all honesty, I hope this movie remains relevant for generations. Better yet, I would love to see a sequel -- one that could explore the trails and tribulations of being a seasoned cop, PTSD, police corruption, possible romance, etc. There's also so much to see and explore in this huge city.
    Zootopia is a gem.

Very well said. I liked how it tackled so many real-world issues while also making it come across without just shoving it in the viewers' faces. And it made the characters all three-dimensional. The good guys aren't perfect saintly angels and the villain, while still pretty bad, you see from a certain view how their mindset put them on the track they went down. It was handled wonderfully well and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Edit: I *LITERALLY* just saw it for the first time last night.

One thing I heard a little while ago always kinda stuck out to me: "Your first thought is what society trains you to believe and your second thought is who you really are". So if your first thought is "oh no! that person's skin colour is different and that scares me" and then your second is "no, wait, they're just another regular schmoe with a regular job", you're doing your humanly best to ignore racial stereotypes and prejudices.
Don't know if it's the most helpful thing out there, but as an anxious introvert it helps me a lot when meeting new people.

Zootopia is not just a simple kids film. It’s smart, it’s mature, it’s important. And because of that, it managed to be my favorite animated film from Disney. I haven’t seen such a well-written buddy cop movie that tackles issues of prejudice since In The Heat of the Night.
I love this movie. It’s themes are still something we must acknowledge, even to this day. That’s why I will, for now and always, love this movie.

Yet, if you were to ask Americans how they feel about racism, bigotry, and prejudice against a group of people for just being that group I can bet my life savings that the overwhelming majority would be vehemently against it. When you have people crying racism over the smallest thing it seems as if racism is everywhere. However, it's not. It still is a very loud, but minority group of people in the country that continues to shrink.
Zootopia isn't really saying anything the majority of the country doesn't already understand and agree with. Racism and prejudice bad.

And tackle what ? All the prejudice we see is a protest rally done by some hippies and a momma bunny on a bus being weary of some tiger dude.

This is why I absolutely despise movies that try to push any kind of "both sides are equally responsible" narrative. You know who, in real life, is always the one insisting both sides suck equally? The side that sucks a million times harder.
John Stewart found out the exact same thing with his Rally to Restore Sanity. He tried to pretend the left and the right were equally responsible, and the right responded by issuing a fatwa upon him for the unpardonable crime of not being lockstep with the right, and the left applauded his sentiments at first, then wrote him off as spineless for his insistence on continuing to pretend that the people calling for his death were still equatable to the people who had supported him.
If there's ever a Zootopia 2, I hope there's at least one part where Nick rails on the villain still having a 30% approval rating, and for the fact that 30% is actually artificially low on account of all the mammals who do approve but are afraid to admit it or don't approve because they don't think the villain went far enough.
That is the dynamic we are currently living under with Don the Con. The people that go to his rallies, kiss his ass and chant "lock her up?" They don't love Donald Trump because they've been tricked into thinking he's not a monster. They love him BECAUSE he's a monster. And the one time some of them did turn on him and set their MAGA hats on fire, it was in response to the one time Trump demonstrated some shred of humanity -- the time Trump revealed that he was not monstrous enough for them.

Honestly one of the best things about Zootopia is how it doesn't ever reduce the conflict down to "good guys versus evil bigots", but instead takes a far more mature and nuanced approach on the issue, making it much more relatable and applicable to real life.

This is easily my second favorite Disney movie. Thank you so much for giving it the review it deserves. When I saw your original review of it, I 1) was annoyed you didn't do a Sibling Rivalry, and 2) felt you kind of under-appreciated what it did. You say it was a bit hammer on the head, but I actually felt there were lots of places where it was subtle, especially when tackling how people have prejudices without realizing it. I particularly liked how they used Clawhauser later in the film. Anyway, glad you've come to appreciate the film more. You might be happy to know that both college and law enforcement are using it to teach courses.

It should never be expected that the world should convert to them, where everything is fair to everyone, regardless of opportunity.
For example, on Judy's first day of the job, she expects to go straight onto the street and start fighting crime with all the other animals. However, because she's the rookie, she has to work her way up from ground zero, which is very understandable. It's trying to preach the message of racial prejudice with Judy being a bunny and all the other animals being big and strong, like a hippo or an elephant. Even if that was the intention of the film, that is not at all how it came across.
There's also taking in mind that because she's a bunny, there are certain crimes that she wouldn't do as well with. There's physical and mental limitations to take into mind, as well. I understand Zootopia is trying to address problems with race and prejudice, but the message itself isn't always explained in the best way. Animals in the animal kingdom are far more complex than that of humans.
I like the parts where it talks about how the people are product of their environment and when you're bringing different cultures or species together in one land, you're going to be mad with prejudice, invasive instinct and hesitation.
It's up to the individual to make the choice of working as one species, regardless of their background. It should never be left in the hands of the authoritarians.

To the second paragraph: On the other hand there are a lot of crimes in that city that the big animals couldn't handle, as demonstrated in the weasel chase scene. The Rhino or Elephant couldn't have gone through that chase, and while that specific instance of her chasing that criminal was her breaking the rules, there are surely many more of such situations where her specific abilities are very useful, and the big animals fail.

It should also be noted, having known people who work for police departments, that while rookies usually start on the bottom, the bottom is patrol duty, not meter maid. In many cities meter maids aren't actually part of the police force, just sharing their precinct buildings. In cities where they are both controlled by the same department, the job of meter maid is also not a starting position but instead given to officers who are injured or disabled in some other way as it is the least demanding in terms of possibly aggregating said injury or the likelyhood of dangerous confrontation.
It is also worth stating that while a rabbit, Judy had managed to pass all the same physical and mental training as the other officers in her academy. The fact that despite this she was still assigned duty that regularly goes to officers nearing retirement or recovering from surgery shows their lack of respect for her and the thought that she is not a real officer.
I enjoyed reading your critique, but felt some of this needed to be brought up as well.

Isn't the point of this Disneycember that Disney comes out with a shit ton of content every year? And I don't think it's at all a good comparison of a Disney princess movie based on Polynesian culture to a movie about antropamorphic animals meant to be an allegory for racism.

    • @stephenwells6434
      @stephenwells6434 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The point is that they're both films released by the Walt Disney Animation Studio, which is a specific division of the Disney Company, and they were released in the same year. Despite the Company's overall output, it's actually very rare for the Animation Studio to release two films in such close proximity (in fact they sometimes go several years between releases), so when they _do_ release two films in one year those two films are almost inevitably going to be compared to each other.
In any event, despite their different subject matter it is still perfectly acceptable to compare the two films for their technical execution or their quality of writing. And in my opinion, Zootopia is the better film in those categories.

This film actually could've gone even darker with the discrimination of predators. In the older script, predators were treated as second class citizens, profiled constantly, forced to wear shock collars that would activate when extreme emotions. The eerie similarities to racial discrimination in real life got so serious that the producers removed to the tame collars and toned it down as the film was way too dark and real to even be enjoyable.
I think that while the tame collar story could really hit home the message of prejudice and discrimination, but I can understand why they would change it.

I feel like they made it not so blatant forms because a) its a kid film so they can’t really go too far and b) it shows how racism isn’t so on surface. In today’s world we have obvious cases of racism but because it’s not blatant or how it was in the 80s, people tend to try to spin it off as not being racist. Having zootopia do this, makes it clear that just because it’s not on surface doesn’t make it not racist
