    A dear friend of mine moved to the US from Taiwan in the late 80's when he was a teenager; he said he was skinny like most people in Taiwan and their daily diet consisted of a small bowl or two of rice, lots of vegetables (some sauteed, some boiled, fresh or canned), some meat/fish, or soups with vegetables, some meat/fish, with/without ramen noodles. 15 years later when he went back to Taiwan for a visit in early 2000's, he noticed many young Taiwanese a lot chubbier than he'd ever seen before and that lots of pastry shops, bakeries, and boba drink cafes had sprouted everywhere. From the mid-90's internet boom and onward, people in general have become more sedentary by having their eyes glued to a screen. Couple this with all the sweet treats or highly processed carbs plus the snacking of such carbs and we have a recipe for plumpness.

      @@AgathaLOutahere Yes, I believe you. The point is that however slim Taiwanese in general may be, my friend noticed right away that the youth from the 70's and 80's were even MORE SLIM than the youth of the 2000's, and they ate rice or noodles daily. So I don't think eating rice is the problem. I'm agreeing with Dr. Berg's point of view that part of the problem just may be the increase in sugary and highly processed carbs consumption. I would imagine Taiwanese people realizing at some point in the last 10 years that they need to cut back on these kinds of foods and be more active.

    To clarify the answer to this question. The traditional Chinese diet does include rice for sure, BUT with lots of vegetables, fermented foods, fish and WITHOUT the added junk, sugar (as in soda) and GMO soy oil. So it really depends on what you are adding to the rice and the type. If you only ate brown rice, you would deplete your zinc and other minerals due to phytates and if you only ate white rice, you'll develop Beru Beri (B1 deficiency). On the glycemic index, rice ranges between 50-90 depending on the type of rice (wild, brown to refined white) so you have to look at the whole picture: the type of rice, quantities and what else you are eating with it.

    • @gentilewarrior
      @gentilewarrior 3 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      So it's more about junk food and GMO then.. I don't drink sugary beverages, but I do eat a lot of fish, meat, rice, beans, soups, veggies, fruits, avocados and tortillas, blood sugar near perfect, no high blood pressure, resting heart beat around 45-50 BPM. I'm part Mexican native Taruhumara from Chihuahua. I have Cardio for days, maybe it's genetics, who knows.

      I’m sorry, but traditionally only people lived on the coast ate lots of fish, but, look at the map, China doesn’t have long long coast line, over 80% or more people actually didn’t have access to sea food at all. Sea food has been luxurious food that regular families in China cannot afford to eat that often.

      I figured that rice is okay to eat as long as you are eating enough healthy vegetables to help utilize the sugars in rice instead of storing them as fat, fermented foods and healthy fats also help reduce the negative effects of high glycemic rice. Thank you for the clarification doctor, I always appreciate your helpful information on health.

      It's the amount of refined carbs that are prevalent in all our food! It makes people constantly hungry, which is so sad :( I've been overweight my whole life bc I could not control my cravings. My wife is Asian and her entire family eats it with every meal and in high quantities(probably 75% percent of their plate is rice).
    My thought is, the foods that they eat with it are good wholesome foods, basically veggies and meat. Unlike here we have junk food. The trend I see is not the the rice being bad it's the other foods people eat along side it, just like you demonstrated in this video. The Chinese population was skinny until they added the junk food.

    I am 70 years old now. Back in the early seventies I was in the Peace Corps in South India. I lived with a host family in a small village in the Thanjavur District. They were Hindu and strict vegetarians. They had no refrigerator. Everything was cooked and prepared fresh daily. Lots of fresh vegetables and fresh fruit, Etc. I ate rice approximately three times a day and lots of lentils cooked in different sauces and gravies. I look back on that part of my life and for those two years I realize that that is the healthiest I have ever been in my life. I had no sodas or soft drinks although I craved them but nothing like that was available because of no Refrigeration. The only beverages that I had was water tea or coffee. And usually the South Indian tea and coffee is served with sugar and milk. There were not a lot of sweets or junk Foods available. I don't even remember back then finding candy bars in the markets. Of course today that has changed in India also as it has in China with junk food more candy bars Etc. Thank you for your hard work on your channel and bringing all of this good information to us. ... I will be making another trip back to that Village this coming spring. Of course now I am overweight but working on it and trying to eat healthier. Your channel is helping me enormously. Thank you so much. I wished I lived close enough to you for you to be my personal coach. I would let you film me and show the enormous difference that could take place with an old fart like me.

    As a Korean (Almost IDENTICAL genetic makeup as Chinese), I can say everything Dr. Berg says is 100% accurate. My family from my parent's generation are ridiculously thin. My uncle has calves that are thicker than his thighs. Then comes my generation. We have been eating American portions and styles since we grew up. All of my cousins are nearly double the sizes of our parents. We still eat rice and kimchi, but our portions are enough to feed a family of four in Zimbabwe. In addition, we're gulping it down with Dr. Pepper and topping it off with Reeses Chocolate bars. There are so many fat Koreans right now that sometimes I cannot find even one 'skinny' person throughout the entire day. It is becoming such a national concern how fat we are becoming, that even politicians are addressing it. I never thought this would happen in Korea (or China).

    Just wanted to clarify, Chinese don't have natto or miso. They are Japanese food. Also, growing up in China in the 90s, I think the problem with obesity wasn't really with fried foods (or rice), but the increasing amounts of processed foods, snacks and drinks. When we were little, our snacks were things made from nuts, sticky rice, or dried fruits, beans, etc. I didn't eat a lot of candies, and a lot of candies were made from berries, sesames.... Drinks were like bean or plum soups instead of pepsi or 7up. We had lots of home-made fried food, noodles and buns, and they didn't really affect us much. But I think our lifestyle was a lot more active though. Even for people who had office jobs, they probably biked to work or kids' schools everyday. With lunch breaks, that'll be at least 4 trips in a days. We also walked longer distances and cardio exercises were common. So maybe people nowadays think carbs are bad because our lifestyles have become a lot more sedentary due to various reasons.

Almost 95 percent of the white flour in the United States is enriched with iron and four of the B vitamins: thiamin, niacin, riboflavin and folic acid. By contrast, fortified flour may contain folic acid in amounts that exceed those present in whole-wheat flour. Calcium, a nutrient that is not naturally present in wheat kernels or whole-wheat flour, is another nutrient that may be present in fortified flour. Starch + fat will not necessarily lead to obesity. If your metabolism and calorie expenditure equals or exceeds your caloric intake then you won't put on weight. Two caveats; some people are more compatible with high carb foods than others, so your own personal experience is a sample size of one and insignificant, and secondly, if your caloric intake exceeds your expenditure, carbs + fat will lead to obesity faster than any other diet composition. Also, health issues take years to manifest, so your current health is irrelevant. I could go on about the latest study results or the arsenic content of rice, but at the end of the day it simply doesn't make any sense as a whole food as the energy content of rice far exceeds the vitamin, mineral, and protein content.

    In Bangladesh our staple food is rice with fish and vegetables. We eat rice 2 times, in rural areas people consume 3 times rice as meals . The people of Bangladesh especially of the villages are so thin and fit despite having rice as a major meal. The condition is changing in urban areas as kids are growing by having burgers, fried chicken and overall an unhealthy diet!

    Not all Chinese eat rice. Really depend on which parts of China are you from, in my region people eat a lot of wheats instead of rice. When I moved to rice regions, I got a lot fatter. Then I moved back to my city, I quickly lost a lot of weight. I can’t say it’s definitely because of rice. But at least it is somehow related. Also in my region, people think rice can quickly turn to be energy. But you get hungry quicker. So you tend to eat more.

The overall quality of their diet was undoubtedly better pre-adoption of a more western style, but it was still very starch heavy. Would Dr. Berg expect someone today to remain lean with a starch heavy diet if the other elements of the diet were similar to the previous Chinese one?

      Starch heavy? Did you check how much they were eating all day? 200g rice, 200g veggie and maybe 30g meat or not at all. That’s typical daily intake in the 80s. No sugar no sweet dessert no snacks. If you try this ‘starch heavy’ diet, you will be as thin as they were.

      Almost 95 percent of the white flour in the United States is enriched with iron and four of the B vitamins: thiamin, niacin, riboflavin and folic acid. By contrast, fortified flour may contain folic acid in amounts that exceed those present in whole-wheat flour. Turns out the same amount of cooked white rice consumed over the same amount of time will change the spike in blood sugar levels depending on whether you use chopsticks or a spoon. When using chopsticks only a small amount of rice is consumed with every mouthful leading to a low spike in blood sugar, where using a spoon where a large amount of rice is consumed with every mouthful leads to a high spike in blood sugar!
