Prospecting Tourmaline in Metamorphic Pegmatites (LCT-Type)

  • This is a field exploration into the geology and mineralogy of metamorphic pegmatites found in Roosevelt National Forest, Colorado. There are two primary categories of pegmatites which receive classification by their origins and chemistries: LCT and NYF. For this prospecting adventure, we’ll investigate the LCT-type where there are frequent occurrences of minerals such as tourmaline (var. schorl), beryl (var. aquamarine), garnet (var. almandine), smoky quartz, plagioclase feldspar, and magnetite.
I typically show a video of the crystals after cleanup but these required no cleaning, so their condition is well-represented by the on-site footage (and thumbnail photo).

I was apprehensive about whether to include the drawings or not. Glad to know they are appreciated and helpful to understanding the trajectory of the field explorations.

Your narration is spectacular! And it’s due to your extensive knowledge of geology.
    Excellent!

Thank youuu. Most days I talk to rocks and minerals more than people. I am overjoyed that this dialogue is appreciated by the crystal community here. ( :

Ahaw. I lived in Florida for a couple years and got so crystal-sick that I began looking into the geology and mineralogy of limestone, dolostone and chert deposits. I did find calcified clams and colorful agatized coral while wading around in Hillsborough Bay, only 45min from my house. I have learned that nearly every type of geologic environment produces some unique mineral variety(ies). I hope that with some research you may find crystals in your area too!!

I live real close to this area. I would like to take my grandson to a spot where he can actually find something he Catan keep. We've been going to storm mountain close to Drake Co. With no luck. Exept for real tiny garnets. Would you be able to disclose the spot you're in. We are very responsible rockhounds. Thank you. And good luck.

I just got back from Colorado on my first rock hounding trip. I would love to find a pegmatite like that but I’m still learning how to find things, and getting access is hard! Everything was private or federal land 😬. But gosh I had a blast and I can’t wait to go on more adventures!

Really appreciate your effort, passion, and knowledge of geology. One of the hardest things to do is translate theory to field identification of both minerals and features at a larger scale. You do both really well!

I saw your You The Tube video, liked it so we Subscribed. We are Disabled Seniors with our 47yr old Son who is a Tetraplegic. We recently became Rockhounds and Lapidary. We just Rock around our neighborhood in our wheelchairs. Getting ready is an adventure in itself=hehehe. We definitely cannot trek that type of Terrain. Anyway, going to view your other videos. Thank You For Sharing WITH US AND THE REST OF THE WORLD. MANY BLESSINGS UPON YOU AND YOUR FAMILY.

I love your attitude, despite all of your circumstances. All of the sub-disciplines of geology mineralogy are soul sciences IMO. I too have circumstances that limit me in many ways. But this sacred Earth has proven to be a profound healer and has even disintegrated a long term diagnosis that I received from a doctor. I'm elated to be able to bring the magic of the forest and minerals to you and will strive to continue to do so going forward.
Much love & light to you,
      Forest Elf🌿

That's one of my biggest aspirations with this channel: education. We can learn a lot from books and complex web articles, but that knowledge means very little without actually seeing it at play in natural systems. I am flattered by your comment and will strive to maintain a balance between education, science, magic, and entertainment in future videos. ( :

I happy to hear you appreciate the views. I've noticed that many rockhounding and prospecting videos do not show the topography and terrain. However, it is an integral part to inderstanding the formation environments of minerals so I'll continue to incorporate them. Cheers

Dzięki za komentarz. Masz rację, jeśli chodzi o nauczanie, jak czytać mapy, aby znaleźć te lokalizacje. W przyszłości planuję w niektórych filmach uczyć czytania map geologicznych, aby inni mogli odkryć takie złoża minerałów.
