    The sample visible on the left at 1:53 when striations are being discussed actually shows exsolution lamellae (intergrowths of two feldspars together), not striations due to twinning.

    • @CVshorey
      @CVshorey  8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +Kec103 You're absolutely right. Guess I should have been more explicit that Plag has striations due to twinning whereas K-spar is streaked with exsolution lamellae due to compositional variations. Thanks for the correction and clarification.

    So, this is when somebody usually comments about how 7 years later at midnight is when algorithm really pulls it together…except I actually spent today collecting feldspar. I’m just going to mount tiny metal trees on it because it’s pretty but I’m delighted with this surprise opportunity to actually learn something about one of the minerals that I use for my craftworks. Thanks!

    • @tinymetaltrees

      I got white and red kinds, both mixed with smoky quartz in regular chevron patterns of varying sizes, to make what the local rockhounds call “graphic granite”. It looks kinda like leopard-print feldspar.

    All of the information about what causes the different colors in quartz is wrong! Smokey quartz is cause by radiation plus aluminum, NOT carbon. Rose quartz is caused by borosilicate, NOT iron. Amethyst is cause by radiation plus iron, NOT titanium.

    • @CVshorey
      @CVshorey  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You are correct. I rushed to production on this one and hope to fix this if I ever have time for 2.0. Thanks for posting the correction here.

  • @sarahpratt9
    @sarahpratt9 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Great and very helpful video! I learned a lot. I believe at 5:46 you meant amethyst quartz's color comes from iron, Very useful presentation.

    • @CVshorey
      @CVshorey  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, and you're right. I also need to correct the smoky quartz coloring. I sped through that section and got sloppy. If I ever get the time, I will go back through these videos and make corrections. For now I have to live with them.

    ❤ hola soy de Guatemala. Fíjate que tengo mucha curiosidad por los cristales y piedras, pero tengo una roca que mide aproximadamente 15 o 20 centímetros de largo y más o menos eso por alto. L o único que no se qué es porque tiene cáscara y por dentro tiene como brillantes pequeños u es de color entre negro y gris se ve como el cielo de noche con estrellas es muy duro me atrevo a decirle que más duro de 7. En la escala. De mosh. Quisiera abusar de usted para ver si me puede ayudar a mi en lo personal me da el pensar que es jade galáctico porque tiene una línea sobre encima como si la hubieran querido partir con fricción porque parece ser una piedra que querrían haber cortado nuestros antepasados, por la línea que llevaban para cortarla. La encontré cerca de donde e encontrado algunos objetos prehispanicos.Porfabor ayúdeme a saber que puede ser le puedo mandar foto. Tengo mucha curiosidad. Gracias.

    Could anybody explain the difference between quartz and quartzite in simple way.

    • @CVshorey
      @CVshorey  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Quartz is a mineral, quartzite is a metamorphic rock. A quartz crystal is just quartz usually, and often starts in igneous rock, but quartzite tends to have more impurities as it probably started as a sedimentary sandstone.
