- Whew! Wanted this to be the Valentine's special, but it was a day late thanks to technical hurdles. Anyways, when I, Jonii, was but a young boy watching the Pokémon anime, Misty was my favorite character, and I learned what it meant to be a shipper because my feeble child brain wanted her and Ash to hook up. Over the years, I have garnered an extensive knowledge of one of the oldest shipping fandoms on the internet and I felt that it was time to share it with the world, so I've made a movie. I hope you all enjoy!

Also, she literally risked her life to save him from drowning during a storm in the second Pokémon movie. She is definitely not the stereotypical mean and abusive modern tsundere that some people claim she is.

I don’t know why it pains the companies that gave us Pokemon to bring back the original team that is Ash, Misty & Brock, even in the 20th Anniversary movie where they decided to replace them with Verity and Sorrel (I mean, sure, they appeared ONLY in the end as did Serena which is what made her at her best by anime standards, but surely, M&B could have been the main characters, even in a FEATURE FILM version of the first few episodes!).

Oh, God. I was not a Pokeshipper, I was THE Pokeshipper. I'm the type who latches onto one ship and just obsesses over it, and... I was stuck on Pokeshipping for a loooong time! Honestly, I think she and Ash had good chemistry, and I like how their relationship developed--they got friendlier as they got closer, and by the end, they were mostly teasing each other rather than really fighting. They helped each other grow, and... It felt like Misty was really devoted to Ash, regardless of whether he returned her feelings. I really like the competitive aspect to their relationship in more recent episodes. Anyway! Yeah, I wrote some pretty popular fanfiction back in the day: Love Is Confusing, Kokoro no Dorobou... (Um... if you ever wanted to do a dramatic reading of any of mine, I'd be cool with it! I'd love to see if anyone still remembers them!) I'm not active in the fandom anymore, but yeah, I still care about it. Lol, for a while the ship I was obsessed with was an OC daughter I made up for them, and the person I shipped her with... Would be nice to get back to that fanfiction one day, but I'd have to rewrite the first parts. Um... Yeah, I still care about it; I would actually be kind of upset if Amourshipping ever became canon.
This is so cool to hear about. One of my biggest goals while making this video was to tap back into that old headspace myself as well as to capture how special the fan community, full of people with the sort of passion and creativity you have, was. I'm very happy to hear that you enjoyed the video and that it brought back memories. I'll have to let you know if I get around to reading those fanfictions you wrote because they sound like a wonderful time capsule!
@@joniivee It really was meaningful for me... Pokeshipping was my second OTP, but the first where I got involved in fandom. Before that, I didn't have home internet access, so I didn't even know shipping was a thing. While I realized I couldn't be the only one, I doubted very many people at all would understand my investment in these pairings from series where romance was far from a main focus. Lol, finding out there was a whole community of people just like me was a revelation!

I don't think I've ever come across a video that was so disturbing yet hilarious, what a potent combination. I had to pause the video multiple time because I was laughing so hard, no moment more so than the fanfic read alouds, which I can only describe as taking things "a bit too far."
I blame Pokemon, Avatar, and Sonic for the modern wasteland and horror story that is internet shipping culture.

Great video mate! Pokeshipping is going strong even today. There's a pokeshipping space in quora which has around 1.6k followers!
The first half of this was really interesting for me who was too young to be in the early scene of pokeshipping, but as someone who was reading Spanish Pokémon fanfiction in 2010 and was a huge Pearlshipper: The three constants of life are Death, Taxes, and Pokeshippers somehow limping on past their ship's expiration date against all odds.
The second half of this reminded me that while I love all fanfiction, I hate at least 80% of fanfiction.

I've been a Pokeshipper since I started watching Pokemon
I cannot believe how deep the blood feud between Pokeshippers and Amourshippers really goes. Having done a little research, it’s hilariously bitter and although less frequent now obviously, the clashing between the two communities is hilariously intense and often mean-spirited when it does happen. I don’t note much animosity from other Pokémon ships, so this runs a little deeper lol.
The bloodfeud is simply the result of shiphungry pokefans who tried to force their headcanon pairing to where they were furious that a girl was created who had a crush on Ash from when they met prior to the 1st Episode. I asked my brother about this shipping wars stuff before & he said it was insane superfans trying to force their opinions in online gang wars. The Misty Shipping with Ash tends to be the much more toxic side from what I understand. Supposedly Mangashipping is worse when it comes to Pokemon with the Yellow with Red faction having conquered the other factions like Red with Misty, Red with Erika, Red with either Blue or Green, & any other ship involving Yellow.
It’s because Amourshippers are trying to pass their ship off as anything more than one-sided canon.

This is so good oh my gosh. I had to pause a few times to walk out of my room and catch my breath. Big agree on the shipping community thing. I haven't really thought about this ship since June 2014 when I was still reading old pokemon fics and found a crossover between the anime and manga.

This video is pretty good. I've gotten into Pokéshipping around late-2019 or early-2020, mainly due to its undying popularity. Still waiting for that ship to become canon (like a majority of those in the Pokéshipping community).

Random fact that I didn't believe until I saw it this morning Ash used the Misty Lure in XY episode 22 going for the gold. It's very subtle but it is definitely there on Ash fishing rod.

That Amourshipping fan fiction was so cringy. I was belly laughing over just how bad it was.
They also have a battle date in SnM, she always comes back to him and he comes home to her when the series's is over, plus in Pokemon movie Mewtwo, it was suppose to end there with Misty and Ash having a daughter in a deleted scene at the end.
That First Movie trailer has always been insanely interesting to me. I think Tyana is right and that that character was not intended to be Misty, but that only makes it more interesting. :P

Hey, pretty awesome Pokeshipping retrospective!
For me, my Pokeshipping "holy grail" is an old Pokemon Advanced Kids WB! promo circa-October 2003, which was also a mini-promo for Gotta Catch Ya Later! It was a somber promo that was shown with certain Pokemon Master Quest episodes around that time that had a heavy announcer saying things like "The moment you thought would never come" and "the friendship you thought would never end" with a shot of Misty saying "Take care, Ash," before the three go their separate ways. I remember how those would play in the lead-up to the English dub of Gotta Catch Ya Later!, and I have never been able to find that particular promo again, but I am pretty sure that 4Kids! also had a lot of say in how the anime was advertised at the time, since there was a minor Pokeshipping hint in that particular promo. I have searched high and low on both Google and TH-cam, and have never found it, which leads me to believe that it was either lost to the sands of time, or it was something I imagined airing and I am a victim of the Mandela Effect.
Still, awesome retrospective! I also remember the fics of Kawaii Cherry Blossom, she made really good Pokeshipping fanfiction. Pity she doesn't write fanfics anymore, but that happens. Your dramatic readings of the fanfics with your voice casts were funny, though!
Thanks for bringing me back to my 6th and 7th grade days of actually caring about the Pokemon anime and wishing for it to carry an actual narrative with character growth instead of just episodic bullshit with characters swapped out like props to promote a current gen. I now remember crying during that song about Misty leaving in the show and don't know whether to cringe at my younger self or to start tearing up for older, simpler times.
In recent years I learned of Takeshi Shudo and how his writing contributions were a huge part of what made those initial seasons and movies feel much more human. We never got to ask him what he thought of 4Kids' narrative changes, but some part of me says he'd have been appreciative of their attempts.
The fanfic section of this video is hilarious... and accurate. If I never read the phrase, "Raven-haired boy" again, it'll be too soon. 😂😭
I think why I'm still a Poké-Shipper at heart after all these years is because Misty's both the girl Ash traveled with the longest and who has the most similar goal to his (imho). They both just wanted to get away from home and be great Pokémon trainers. Ash was more sheltered, so Misty would give him a hard time over not knowing certain things about being a trainer. She also had a major chip on her shoulder because she has three older siblings and that bike probably cost her the full price, and only child Ash Ketchum stole and destroyed it in one day. We all know how much the Kanto bike shop charges for those things!
No lie, watching and listening to this whole video about Ash and Misty I had a stupid dumb grin the entire time.
I loved the Idea about Misty and Ash being a ideal couple since I saw the show when it came out two and half decades ago.
Almost a full two years late, but better now than never - and better that I watched this video, because I had a blast doing so. This topic just oozes early internet vibes, which I've been looking for since I never got to really experience it as a kid... Not to mention I was cackling at some of the jokes ("There's a lot of art of this out there and I wish to show you exactly none of it" is disgustingly good and while I feel bad for laughing at it somewhat that's the type of humor I adore anyway) and the good voicework from your friends. You did a great job covering this "old gem" that a lot of people might have missed out on, and as such I think you've earned my sub.

This irritating part about 4kids pokeshipping meddling is that they tried so hard to ship them but completely removed shipping aspects of other dubbed shows with actual romance elements in them, like in the Megaman battle network anime between Lan and Maylu.
I swear there must've been a change in staff between the Pokemon anime and their other works. Just in general their later dubs seem sanitized and sterile while the Pokemon anime ship-teased two kids and threw in the occasional adult joke.

Misty was one of the only tsunderes I ever enjoyed watching, alongside Natsuki from DDLC (who was my first real exposure to it when I knew what tsundere meant). Tsunderes, to me, only work when the anger and annoyance is justified, whether it be because of the love interest not taking hints or making mistakes that hopefully can be learned from or changed, or in the case of pop culture, comedic comebacks. They do not work when tsunderes spend most of their time getting pissed off and being physically and emotionally abusive towards their partner. How do people find that attractive?

I haven't watched the anime in a long time (came back for the Alola anime cuz of Rowlet) but Pokeshipping is pretty cute. I never noticed how hard 4Kids tried pushing it until I was older xD
I noticed the opposite personally with the Pokeshippers being a lot more toxic & forceful of their opinion. I was way too young to understand Tsundere relationships for several of my times watching the Gen 1 Anime. I was born in 1997 & find your comment rude. I came to this video to try to understand why people ship Misty with Ash so strongly. I kind of became busy with college & stopped watching Pokemon during Alola.
@@bookmew1081 I'm just basing it off my own personal experiences in fandoms honestly. Example being my ex fiancee is a proAmourshipper and she was/still is a very toxic person. Outside of Pokemon, the same applies in other fandoms as well such as Sonic, YuGiOh (I left that fandom because Faithshippers are assholes and my abusive ex is also in said fandom), and Kingdom Hearts . Unless I'm blind to it, I haven't seen toxic discourse, shipping wise, in the Fire Emblem, Smash, Persona, Xenoblade or Kid Icarus fandoms. I mean yes, in the case of Fire Emblem's fandom, it IS bad with the female Corrin simps bashing you if you think male Corrin is cool. I guess waifus are "serious business."
I've never had anyone tell me to go "kill myself" in the fandoms I mentioned but the ones I said were toxic? Yes. Then again, this was in the mid 2000s on GaiaOnline where kids ran rampant. I was 14-15 when I joined but I never encountered crazy people like that before on the net.
While the tsundere trope isn't one of my favorites, as many gals don't pull it off, I'm more of a male tsundere appreciator. Prominent example being Dark Pit from Kid Icarus Uprising. I think Pokeshipping is cute but it isn't my personal favorite. I only said what I said from my personal experiences in the Pokemon fandom and others. Most of my Pokemon related ships are LGBT. Quite a decent number of folks in the fandom don't like those kind of ships based on discourse I'd seen in the past such as FerrisWheel vs Isshu in the Black and White days. People are pretty nasty when it comes to that kind of thing. I wasn't trying to come across as rude but basing things my own treatment and what I've seen. If one thing is true, if one stays in a fandom long enough, you see how toxic some folks can be.
@@Rowlet_Prince_Kamui I didn't think Pokemon explored LBG territory much. Although I thought Trans Ash was extremely popular. The only Yuri Ships I can think of are Diantha with her Manager, Dawn with Zoey, Candice with Maylene, & Candice with Zoey & possibly Dawn. There are a fair few Yaoi ships though with Ash with Gary & its manga counterpart being popular.
@@bookmew1081 I know many of the ships have their own followings. I just like them for how some of said ships could fit for AU stories that I've seen before. Isshu (N x Touya/Hilbert) and Nullola (Elio/Sun x Gladion) are two examples of pairs I see possible potential for. Granted I guess that's more in terms of the games mostly. And for some male protags that aren't as popular, I like to see them get more recognition. I understand the female protags are more popular but the male protags do have some solid designs. Equal love should be given all the protagonists of the series I think!
I haven't kept up with the fandom for a bit but I've enjoyed many lovely fanart pieces and other types of fanworks for the series. And at least from what I've seen, shipping discourse seems to be more civilized nowadays. At least I hope so. Folks just need to be civil about it.

This video is hilarious but it kind of makes me wonder why Amourshippers and Pokeshippers can be so salty towards each other. I'm a fan of both Amour and Pokeshipping and I don't really think either one is worth bashing, or any of the ships with the other girls really. As a kid I loved Pokeshipping and it's something I'm still very nostalgic for. Then when XY came out when I was in high school I really liked Serena's character and I think her development with Ash is very good. So both relationships are ideas that can be good!
Just write a fanfic where they just become like. a throuple or something problem solved everyone now stop fighting

Imo ship wars are dumb since I live by the "Ship And Let Ship" rule and if I don't like a ship I simply don't look at it, and I don't attack people with ships that are different than mine.
