  • Graphics in video games have come a long way since the beginning of gaming, Nowadays we have graphical masterpieces that blur the lines between game and reality. Unfortunately the obsession with good graphics has deterred some game companies from making actual good games to advertising a boring graphical art show. In this video I explain what makes video games good steering people away from the illusion of graphic.

Artistic styling is far more important. For example, the cartoony look of WoW will last indefinitely while LoTRO (which was considered to have vastly better graphics than WoW in 2007), will always look more aged because it went for a more realistic look.

its called a VIDEO game. its right in the title lol. Visual presentation matters just as much as the gameplay mechanics. Visual presentation includes more than just the technical graphics, it also includes art style and user interface. All of these things are equally important in my opinion.

Nah. Videogame graphics are important. Even low fidelity and or cute pixel games can look visually appealing if they're done right. Modern video techniques will look shit if done wrong. There's no link between good graphics and developers sacrificing fun. These developers would keep their boring game mechanics even if their graphics looked bad. Your arguement's too simplistic and reductive

Yeah if the game doesn't look appealing no one would even bother trying them.

This is such a dumb take. Are you going to tell me atari 2600 games are better than modern games. No graphics are not everything but when graphics and game play come together it's amazing. Check out spider man or god of war.

Of course gameplay comes first - I've never enjoyed a game just for it's visual quality.
That being said - what matters for graphics is for it to be good enough. Different people have vastly different standards here - for example for me that game Core keeper just looks way too ugly. I, in fact, find the entire pixel graphics style disgusting - an excuse not to make real graphics.

Gameplay does not matter more than Graphics, nor do Graphics matter more than Gameplay. They are equally important.
If the Graphics are garbage, and the gameplay is good, it's going to degrade the experience a lot.
If the Gameplay is garbage, and the graphics are good, it's going to degrade the experience a lot.
A Good game will Balance both, having both good gameplay *And* graphics.
Of course, there are expections to this, as some games are purposely created to be abstract, and not look realistic, like Cuphead for example, but games made with realism in mind, like Open-world games with a focus on exploration, do need good graphics to some extent to be good.

but cuphead still has amazing looking graphics and animations, i think a better example would be games like minecraft centered around a specific artstyle which isnt very visually appealing

I dont know. I have more hours in v rising and valheim than i do in some games that have amazing graphics and good gameplay. I just think those games are more fun than triple a nonsense.

A game with bad gameplay can never be a good game. Whereas a game with bad graphics could be. Graphics, of course, does matter, but gameplay must come first.

For me it's so fucking hard to find actually GOOD games with GOOD gameplay. Everywhere you go everyone's recommending the same games: newest AC, newest FarCry, newest Sony cinematic, newest cinematic in general...
It's very very very rare that someone talks about an actually fun game. It's all about the graphics

    • @inkwyvern5171

therefore good graphics are the problem? Do you see how that logic doesn't follow? Graphics and gameplay can be good and bad separately to each other; these days all games suck. Good graphics are just more prevalent because technologies moved on. You can't blame a lack of mechanical creativity on the art and animation team who had absolutely nothing to do with it. A game's creative vision isn't being stifled or sacrificed for visual appeal.
Whoa, whoa! Guys! GUYS! I hear you're creating GREAT graphics down here in the art department?!
      Ye-yeah...why?
R U INSANE?! Now our gamplay will suck! What have you done!
      We - we just thought--
CAN IT! You aren't hired to think! You're hired to make TERRIBLE GRAPHICS so our game design team's allowed to make good gameplay!
      ri...right.... We're sorry

Gameplay is much more important but downright ugly graphics are still not acceptable.

I grew up in the 70's and 80's when video games came out and were growing fast. PONG in the 70's was a great looking game. Then space invaders and Missile Command and Pac Man came out and they were great graphics. Then Super Mario and Donkey Kong. Then Coleco-vision and Intellevision, etc. Well, you get the point. They were awesome graphics to us back then.
I was always waiting for graphics to get better and better. That is why I always tried to buy the newest graphics GPU. That is why I invested in VR HMDs. I want more immersion. Not more arcade experience.
I have been playing games at 4k for several years now. I can't go back to 1080p. When I decide on purchasing a game it has to have nice looking graphics. Game play is important too but if the game looks like shite then I'll pass. I don't care how popular it is.
    That is my preference.
