I just purchased the purchased the XR-85X90K and I love it. I had the A80J OLED for a little more than a year before and I don't notice any lack of clarity on this new LED set compared to the previous one. Maybe a slightly greyer black in certain scenes of certain movies with this one but overall it's just as clear and brighter. Those people that say LEDs are old and dead are sorely mistaken if you ask me. It really comes down to a matter of preference and what types of content you watch (streaming channels, gaming, blu-ray discs, cable channels, SDR vs. HDR, etc.) If you have the money and can afford an 85" OLED be my guest and get one. More power to you but there is nothing wrong at all with a high quality LED such as the XR85X90K.

Glad you mentioned about watching "regular tv" (cable). There are those who buy TV just for this purpose and are not interested in watching 4K HDR demo movies on YT/ Netflix or only watching them occasionally. Most of the time using tv for cable signal. Almost any modern tv will display a good picture in 4k, but not everyone will display a decent picture in SD or HD resolution. Therefore such comparisons are important not only in 4K.

To be honest, the blacks are amazing, I don't know what the hell people are talking about when they say LED TVs can't perform as well as OLED. My brother and I bought the Sony 65" X95K for our father. The reasons we decided for the X95K is that its one of the top of the line TVs for 2022 and getting him to upgrade things like TVS is not an easy task, its Mini-LED and not OLED, something my father might find a way to accidently burn in or disconnect the power while its on, something I hear is not a great thing to do with OLEDs. The Sony X95K is good for a bright room, and viewing angles are pretty good and, my father complains about dark scenes so this TV should do better than his old 50" Vizio M501d A2R(Tv we bought him around 2012), and perhaps one of the biggest reasons is that this TV is able to be put in Basic mode! This is a must for a non techy elderly parent who struggles with technology but still has to use technology. I wish someone would do a quick video clip of basic mode.

But my room generally has no light, the ambient light is out of the screen field and isn't a factor, and my seating area is narrow so the viewing angle effect is minimal at best.

Great comparison. It’s a shame that the mini-led technology itself doesn’t really bring much performance advantage over their FALD, except for getting brighter. Significantly improved blooming control would/should be expected for the price difference. And what ever happened to Sony’s “Backlight Master Drive” that was being hyped up? It’s been crickets since launch, probably because it’s not bring much to the table. It seems that the advantages of the x95K over the x90K are things that have nothing to do with the mini-led tech: anti reflective coating, better speakers, better build quality, and maybe a cleaner screen more often. At the very least, given the lack of performance boost for the price Sony should give the x95K a better warranty to highlight the build quality. They need to do something to justify the big price difference between these two TVs. Hopefully, as B mentioned, Sony will dial in mini-led advantages (i.e. less blooming) in upcoming models.

I think you're right, Sony will keep updating firmware till they get it as perfect as it can be.
TCLs 65 825 mini led set had horrible local dimming in anything but high and about a year in to my ownership they dropped a major update that pretty much fixed it.
I ended up upgrading to the monster Z9K and I'm loving it. The best HDR performance I have ever seen, ridiculously bright, and fantastic black levels.
Mine got the latest vrr update before they pulled it and I just tried playing a old game through my Shield and Steam and it was super smooth at 4k resolution. Other owners are complaining about how bad games look but their newer sets didn't get the update.
The X95k is 80 percent of the picture quality of the Z9K for a lot less money so if you want Sonys best features without 8k and slightly less maximum brightness it's a excellent choice.
You do pay the Sony tax and for many it's just not worth it.
I do see some blooming in certain situations but it is minor and the overall quality of the picture makes up for it. It looks like 3d and you are there in person when it gets a high bitrate 1080p or higher video and HDR is just something to marvel at on it.

The X95K is OLED priced so that doesn't make sense, and it looked too blown out, brightness wise at Nebraska Furniture Mart. The X90K is 90% of the X95K for 50% of the cost. So I'm thinking of going with the X90K and then in 2 years when the 75" QD OLED is reasonable, I will still have money to upgrade. Also, I'm moving from a 7 year old 60" Sharp so the X90K should be a huge upgrade for me.

It's all French to me... I'm currently running a Sony 65' Bravia x90e with the 120 hertz refresh rate. No issues running with my Xbox X. Blu-ray movies and games are great but recently noticed color dimming during streaming shows. I don't need a TV but would like a new one in the near future..
It's the X90 for me. Only a Sony because all my other equipment is Sony and I hate having more than 1 or 2 remotes.

Thanks for this comparison. I think it was very well done. Yes, I did purchase one of these sets. I choose the X95K in the 85-inch size. I have had this TV for about 6 weeks now. It has all of the updates and is fully calibrated. It gives off so much light with no fear of "burn in" if we leave it on something by mistake. The light in my movie area goes from medium light to of course dark. I watch a good deal of old as well as new movies, TV on Dish, and sports. Not a real gamer. The TV has been impressive to me as well as to my friends. I did not consider the X90K in the 85-inch size because it just wasn't as impressive in the 85-inch size to me. The TV is much more impressive in the 85-inch size than the 65-inch size. I also think it will be getting updates to this new technology from Sony that will make it even better and the X90K will not. If there is a complaint it would be that I think it is a little overpriced, Around $4999 would be a more fair price to start with. Thank You for all of your hard work.

You could see right off the bat the x95k has a bit more color to it tbh. Also remember perceived contrast can happen just from a tv being dimmer regardless of measurements.
Like you can compare a cheap 800 dollar tv that's 400 nits dimmer and it can look to have more contrast then a more expensive brighter led tv. That's just what happens when it comes to how led tvs work.

@kemarturner553 sheesh I would go a90j all day man but I'm an a90j owner so that's why. Can't beat the image for wrgb oled I still haven't been able to upgrade due to just how good this tv is. Usually I upgrade super often but yeah just to good man. The depth, the way yoy can manipulate the image into anything yoy want. It's very accurate our of the box but you can ads in extra color and stuff if you want. It just does everything. Now of course if yoy want super super bright go with the led tvs. Z9k is a monster like truely an animal. But if you don't want to spen that cash the x95k is a great led tv.

It's just a matter of budget I think... X95 it's just a little bit better than x90 about brightness and contrast but both TVs share the same technology to "turn off" unnecessary pixels for deep black contrast.
If you compare these two models with a normal Sony Bravia led you will notice the difference!
By the way the Sony Bravia led is still one of the best compared to other led TVs as the TRILUMINUS technology really makes a difference in colors which are more brilliant. and Sony TVs are brighter than other brands as I have seen with my eyes in the store.
Both TV's are very good for my opinion but if I wouldn't have problem with budget I would choose the Sony Bravia Oled of course!
I'm just planning to buy my first Sony Bravia since long time 😉

I have a 75 inch x95k in my basement, that I like a lot, now I just want to say, I don’t really see the need or the interest in buying an oled, which can have issues after using one for a few months with the possibility of burn in, and other things like that.so for now I am perfectly fine with my current big tv, for a movie/video game room, I have in my basement.

Until reviews start coming in about the X95K in the 85 inch version you really can't compare. The difference between the two from 65 to the 85 inch version is night and day. My neighbor has the 65 in his office. I can't comment on the 75 inch version of the X95K.
I have had the 85inch for about a week. Coming from a 940E 75 inch. I am not seeing any of the issues that seem to be present with the 65 inch in this model.
We are really happy. Our room is super bright. Especially in afternoons.

I have debated these TVs all week, but got the x90k because the 95k is double the price on black Friday sales! Ridiculous pricing... however I will say, the 95k handles viewing angles much better and I almost paid that double price just because the 90k gives white wash sitting just a few feet off center... I would like to have the back lit remote as well, and I think the 95k is way over priced, but no doubt has better picture overall.

I am not looking to get another LED TV. I think the Sony A90J 83 inch on a huge discount now. Do you think when you get the A90J in your house, will you notice the difference in brightness that a A95K or G2 has on the A90J. Room is bright during the day but mainly watch TV at night since working during the day and room has no lights on at night. Don’t play games on TV.
