There are trains that go 'uphill' and have a very difficult time doing so - I have been on them! Sri Lanka and India. The driver had such a job, it was raining and the train slowed down and started sliding and going backwards for a few seconds! Scary, train was loaded with people as usual.
Why can't trains go up hill? For the same reason they're the most efficient form of transport out there - each wheel as around the same contact area as a dime!
I really do not need to be looking at this video for me to know why it can’t go uphill Also everyone, please stay safe around railroads. You have no idea how many people fail to recognize basic railroad safety procedures, and to railfans like me, it’s so frustrating since some people tend to do the wrong things around railroad property.
Well actually, you said "no one" and That kid is Someone therefore it is not actually no one because there is someone. Bet someone is gonna attack me after this...
I'm from Edinburgh and it is pronounced "edinbruh" and trains are no where near like that and never have been for a good few decades and the train is really famous and called the flying scotsman !!!
i'm from Ottawa. We just had a new light rail train system incorporated in the city. Forget about going uphill, our trains have trouble going horizontal !!!
oh yeah! The Zanetti! Ghost train! Ever since i saw your video about it, I've been a bit obsessed with that train and thinking of if and when we may see it again.
When I was really young and I didn't even know something called maglev exists, I thought what if we use magnet inside of a train and do it like ++ so the train hovers and moves forward. That trash idea is related to maglevs tho. I'm glad
Come to India.. here trains go uphill (more than 2° elevation) without any hiccups.. PS:- land in Mumbai and travel from Mumbai to Pune Junction through train. You'll definitely love going through mountains..
Trains can't go uphills!!! Indian Railways: Are we joking to you? We have built railways through ghats(mountain ranges) & use 4 engines if trains are going from ghat sections!!! ❤❤💞💞💞 Bright Side please consider Indian Railways... ❤❤❤
In France usual maximum gradiant is 2% for plain lines, 3% for mountain lines and 4% for high speed lines. Of course it's much more for cog lines like there are many in Switzerland.
>Trains can’t go uphill *laughs in Salude grade, horseshoe curve, Cajon pass, Marias pass, Yosemite lumber company slope, Allegheny portage railroad, Donner pass, Sherman hill, the hills in polar express, and Madison incline*
Well Done! This was a great video, little bit click baity even though u did answer the question at the end, I did thoughly enjoy the way you presented in-short the entire history of rail travel and transportation
@brightside one question ...Certainly the maglev trains run on electromagnets, but what would happen if due to some failure the electric supply is cut-off ?
Its because trains wheels dont have very much friction on the rails, and because of how much weight they have behind pulling them down when going up a gradient, even a minor gradient 0.5 for example can have huge effects on locomotives. Also steam locomotives cannot go up gradients too high or the water will go over the crown sheet. Also the Zanneti story has been retold on many famous channels, but no evidence to back it up, I cannot find any sources of locomotives, carriages or entities called Zanetti.
Im going to correct this entire video and say trains can go UP hills, they are just not good at it, in fact the biggest incline in railway history, known as the lickey incline in brittain, with a gradient of 1 in 37.7 needed 4 to 3 engines to help trains go UP it but they never built a tunnel on it.
Here's a competition British Rail Vs Amtrak Vs SNCF Vs NethrlandsRailways NS Vs CFR Vs Thalys Vs China Railways Vs Renfe Vs NI Railways Chosse which one and what should I add Like so bright side can see ⬇️
I love soctland some thomas and friends enigne were there there called donald and douglas and jinty and the green LNER enigne and green mallard or briten
Trains can go up hill Some of the steepest standard railroads in the U.S is the Cass scenic railroad in Cass west Virginia which has an average grade of 5-6% (that means 5-6ft in up in elevation for every 100 ft traveled forward) but can reach grades of 10% at some parts, they use special geared locomotives called she's, climaxes, and Hieslers that have better traction and pulling power than a standard steam locomotive. The geared railways are called cog railways they use a gear and cog in the middle of the track to pull the locomotive and cars up the hill. They can tackle steeper grades with the steepest railway running on a max grade of 48%.
What's the point of the meandering, beating around bush video? It just explained the title for few second in between and rest 8 odd minutes are pointless.
You're in burnt fen, UK, at a station called Shippea Hill. However, you can not only see any hills for miles, but you can't see any civilisation here either, only three farmhouses. This was once the least used station in Great Britain.
Do you like trains in your country? Where are you from, btw? 🚂

Apparently, the engines are extremely strong and heavy if they are able to climb up Gordon's Hill.
I would assume you're just having fun--since "Thomas" is nothing but a fictional animated character in a children's television show.
@@jb6712 Your assumption was correct.

I've heard some trains go uphill, like up a grade or climbing up before heading down a grade,
They can manage light short grades with light loads on the consist.

Why Yes, they can. Many Locomotives have Sand Compartments that provide sand as Traction for The Train.
Exactly! Sandboxes, sand domes, and sanders (workers who sand the rails, usually also the driver or fireman) are an excellent solution!
Love it thanks for sharing.

There are some very fast trains that have traction that can go uphill, at about 400 miles per hour

Trains run up and down hills all day long. The tracks have a very slight grade, but they are still hills.

Mexico has a train called, chepe express. It drives through copper canyon. Copper canyon is as big as Grand Canyon.
Trains can go up hill

Early squad?
2 degrees isn't complete lack of 'uphill'.
Exactly as I figured. Trains have no grip to fight upwards gravity, they only roll.
