For those of you wanting a bit more of info on the actual locomotive 8888 here you go. It was a SD40-2 owned by CSX transportation. The locomotive was painted in CSX’s YN2 paint. The engine was a former Conrail unit which CSX acquired in 1999 after the brake up of Conrail. Multiple museums attempted to purchase it, but in the end, it was rebuilt by CSX into a SD40-3 numbered 4389.

8:42 actually applied the independent brake and the dynamic brake, the dynamic brake uses the train's generator to power the brakes, and the engineer set the throttle to 8 (basically: full throttle) but the independent brake disabled the dynamic, so the train sped off on full throttle. Also, what are those readings? BTW there was another conductor, but they were now actually on the train, and the two ppl were in contact via radio, the conductor ran to get help when the train sped up and the engineer didn't radio back. But that was after the conductor told the engineer many times that the train was getting a little to far for comfort. The conductor radioed 4 times in total, but only got two through to the engineer.

Yes, the following was a real disaster: "The Lac-Mégantic rail disaster occurred in the town of Lac-Mégantic, in the Eastern Townships region of Quebec, Canada, at approximately 01:15 EDT,[1][2] on July 6, 2013, when an unattended 74-car freight train carrying Bakken Formation crude oil rolled down a 1.2% grade from Nantes and derailed downtown, resulting in the fire and explosion of multiple tank cars. Forty-two people were confirmed dead, with five more missing and presumed dead.[3] More than 30 buildings in the town's centre, roughly half of the downtown area, were destroyed,[2] and all but three of the thirty-nine remaining downtown buildings had to be demolished due to petroleum contamination of the townsite.[4] Initial newspaper reports described a 1-kilometer (0.6 mi) blast radius.[5]" (Wikipedia).

Did you know that a train got directed onto the main line, it stopped, but an express train was going full speed on the same track. The driver decided to make the train go extremely fast so it could run away. He jumped out the cab and ran. The express train stopped, but the other train had already reached a high speed. It finally stopped 6 miles after it lost it’s water.

Nowadays most class 1 locomotives in North America are equipped with PTC (Positive Train Control) where a set of buttons have to be pressed every few minutes to make sure the engineer is alert. If they aren't pressed in time, the locomotive hits the brakes and shuts down.

I KNOW almost same story as the second your story, but ill tell how the train was runaway and the end: the train was a runaway just becauze of the train engineer, he was trying to use brakes while he was going 100miles per hour and there was a really short wave, and it was too fast that the train could crash into the river, and there was a random helpers that was in front of the train, and you may ask: WHY ENGINEER DOESNT USE BRAKES??? Well it was broken. And those random guys with the helper train IMMDIATLY (idk how to spell that word) used brakes and the runaway train crashed into it and it stopped it, and they were all fine. Love your videos :3

Some misinformation about this video in the CSX Crazy 8's incident.
The locomotive 8888 was a former Consolidated Rail Corporation (Conrail) now CSX Transportation owned SD40-2 locomotive. On this day, CSX 8888 was assigned to the railroad yard in Walbridge, Ohio (Toledo). This is where the CSX Toledo Branch and CSX Pemberville Subdivision meet. The Walbridge to Kenton Mainline is actually the former Conrail, now CSX, Toledo Branch, which runs between Walbridge Ohio, and Ridgeway, Ohio. From Ridgeway Ohio, the line becomes the former Conrail, now CSX, Scottslawn Secondary Mainline. The locomotive and these railroad lines were acquired in 1999.
On this afternoon, the engineer of this train symboled CSXT Y-115 was given orders by the yard tower to move a string of 47 cars from one track in the railroad yard to another track to make room for an inbound freight train. As the engineer was moving the set of cars, he noticed that the switch was lined against his movement. The train was moving slow, but it wasn't enough to stop in time before the switch. Realizing what was going to happen, he decided to hop down from the cab, throw the switch, then reboard his engine.
Before leaving the cab of the locomotive, he applied the train's Locomotive Brake. This is a brake that stops only the locomotive, but not the rest of the train. Given that the air hose (The train's brakes line) between the first car and the locomotive was disconnected (Which is common practice for switching within yard limits), he decided to apply the Dynamic Brakes. The problem was that the SD40-2 locomotive was of an older design, and the Throttle (The gas pedal for locomotives) and dynamic brake throttle were combined into one handle, with a selector switch. This engineer forgot about this, so when he went to grab the dynamic brake, he accidentally threw the locomotive into Notch 8 (Full power). The other problem is that when he applied the Independent Brake, he disables the locomotives Alerter, which is a device that will go off if the engineer doesn't cancel the alarm or doesn't make any adjustment to the controls. However, when the Independent brake is applied, the Alerter is canceled out. This system is a safety feature that prevents the traction motors and wheels from locking into position.
The train left the railyard thanks to the programming of the switches, onto the CSX Toledo Branch. From there, the train headed down the mainline doing an average speed of 35 mph, going as high as 51 MPH. The authorities, aka the police, were not in a position to stop the runaway train. The police and fire officials' job was to keep people out of harm's way and to be on location in the worst-case scenario. However, the issue was is that at the of the train's route in Columbus Ohio (The Capital) there was a curve where the train wasn't going to make and was going to derail near downtown. The Ohio Governor at the time, Bob Taft, was evacuated from the city in the event that the train was going to derail, and put the Ohio National Guard on standby should the worst-case scenario happened.
The first attempt to stop the train was by having the train run over what is called the derail. The derail was on a siding and could be set by the dispatcher to be attached to the rail. Unfortunately, the derail is only useful to stop runaway railcars, not locomotives, so when the train ran over the derail, it shattered. In Findlay, Ohio, a police officer using a Twelve Guage Shotgun and a buck round shot at the train to enable the train's emergency safety cut-off switch. This cutoff switch shuts off fuel to the generator, and thus the train would have coasted to a stop. However, not only did the officer mess, but the button needed to be depressed for roughly 10 seconds before it would activate.
A few miles down the line, there was CSX train Q636, which was waiting in the siding for the Runaway Train to pass. The locomotive in charge of the train was CSX engine 8392, the same model SD40-2 as CSX 8888 was. When the train passed, the Dispatchers ordered the crew of the train to uncouple their lead locomotive and chase the train down in reverse. They caught up to the train just North of Kenton, Ohio. They managed to slow the Runaway Train down to about 11 MPH, however, given that CSX 8888's throttle was still wide open, it wasn't enough to fully stop the train. Jon Hosfield, who had heard about the Runaway since just after it began, has chased the train almost all the way from Toledo with another person. From there, as the train started coming over a railroad crossing, he positioned himself and jumped onto the handrails, climbing into the cab, and shutting off power.
The investigation found that it was simply Human Error that caused the incident. After the incident, CSX 8888 was released back out into the open as a CSX Locomotive with a new set of brake shoes and a new control stand where the Dynamic Brake Switch and Throttle are two levers again. The engine served CSX for many more years until 2013 when an alternator Failure put the engine on the sidelines. As of 2021, the locomotive has been rebuilt into an SD40-3 locomotive number 4389, and it remains a part of the CS Roster to this day.
May 15th, 2021 marked 20 years since the famous incident happened. As an Ohioan and a railfan, I have always asked myself if this incident could ever happen again in the United States.

11:09 28 Apr 2013, a single U20C locomotive runs from the train depot, reaching a top speed of 145 km/h without a driver while warming up the engine, the brakes are also damaged during the trip because the locomotive is at full power when the brakes are applied and the reverser lever is in the forward position.

I would like to ellaborate on 8888: when they claimed the setting was to accelarate, it was also that the dynamic brake was turned on and activating the throttle will slow the train down, but since the brakes were completely burned, that was how the runaway even started
