I think it's about time someone keep those greedy studios in check. It's almost like a revolution. As someone working in the creative industry myself, I hope the film industry practitioners are getting what they deserve. Thanks Makayla for the well-explained video on the situation.
Film industry isn´t just Hollywood. You also have independent cinema and european cinema aswell but i really hope this situation works out for both parts.
Maybe not! The union does not want actors to work on any productions at all! I am an Indi Film Producer, I work with non-union projects and more significantly bigger budget union projects. It would be great if the union said "Work on Indi Projects and show Hollywood there are alternatives!"
For people who aren’t in unions yeah… all the current union members aren’t allowed to partake in any indie projects of any kind … they’re very strict. If you’re part of a union for UPS and you’re on strike hoping for better wages, etc, you’re not allowed to go deliver for FEDEX until UPS meets your demands. That’s called being a “scab”. The free market millionaires will start supporting indie projects because they won’t have to deal with the unions… it will be looked at as “gig work”… air b&b, Uber, Door Dash…. All of these “gig” sources of income are sold as better alternatives or ways to earn income on your time and terms…. But Taxi unions, hotels (who employ thousands of people in cities),
@@MichaelThomas-ll1hwyes alternatives are an option thats capitalism. But with the hotel and airbnbs and cabs and urber is the taxi and hotels are still there. They are staples. And making there money no longer a monopoly. They are the long haul will they still be there 20 years the credible. I guess the question is who will be there 20 years from now. Peoples choice.
A business is a business.. independent film depends on big Hollywood… cause that’s what allows Hollywood actors to do smaller passion projects. You make 15 mil on marvel so you can then work for scale on a Indy film about an orphan who wants to become a painter.
Corporate greed is all it is. As an aspiring screenwriter, I'm now thinking of turning my screenplays into books. Thank God people still read and because of the strike may start reading even more.
By design, most of the country are ignorant about labor movements. The media and politicians have been complicit in destroying unions. It's not just Hollywood; it's every industry embracing rampant greed. We really need a general strike to stop this.
🚨 RED ALERT 🚨 yeah, hollywood is going through it. i stand with the writers and actors currently on strike. without them, there is no tv show, film etc.... ✊🏽✊🏽 down with these greedy film studios and ceos!!
If there’s one thing I’ve learned in life. The people doing the actual creative work are much more valuable then a yes man executive. And it’s not even close.
but who will ruin our heroes if not for Hollywood writers? Who will give me hand-me-down race swapped characters and tell me I should be happy about it? Who's gonna ignore all of the people that came before them and pretend they were the first this or that?
@davini1361 I don't think the acting industry is Doomed, cause many people are not a fan of AI. We as the people vote with our wallets, and that will show the executives what we think.
And it's not just Hollywood. Companies everywhere for decades have been trying to come up with ways to render their workers obsolete. Now with all this new technology, it's a real possibility and anyone not in the ruling class is now in imminent danger!
They are not greedy. They are not making the money they used to with streaming. Studios are losing money. There are two sides. If you don't have investors, then you cannot operate. If it was up to the actors to manage the business, they would be bankrupt in a week. You can not pay 200 million dollars to make a film and only gross 20 million. Actors needs to stick to what they know which is NOT how to make money.
@@ST-rj8iuI’m sorry but “they are not greedy” line is just so funny to me. Thanks for the input Bob Iger, but we don’t care if a major corporation loses business we just want to be paid fairly and make people happy with our products.
@@roxanne_ yes and without that business you don't have a job. They cannot lose money and go bankrupt. You clearly don't know the difference between net and gross profit. You also don't understand EBITDA. You are funny and don't know anything about business. Actors are replaceable for the most part. Just like fast food workers. the top 2% are the ones with talent. The rest of you are just playing yourselves. BTW...Bob Iger doesn't care about you either. That is why you will go broke. You are paid fairly. AI will replace you as it should. They can make faces and bodies with a computer for background. This will lesson the carbon footprint of all the travel for actors to do nothing. It is better for the environment to start using more green screen.
@@roxanne_ If there are no profitable entertainment businesses then actors can't be paid at all Anyone funding a project is expecting to make a positive return, and media already is not that appealing of an investment The industry is going to die if the majority of investments don't make money at a more consistent and reliable rate. If not, then even less people are going to survive in the industry and all the power will forever be concentrated in people who already made it, aka limiting upward mobility
Red alert! I am a full fledged ACTRA Member (the Actor's Union in Canada) and we are feeling the writer's strike up here! We stand with you and I've been watching your content for a while now. Keep up the great work! Ignore the haters, so not worth your time! Hang in there, we got this!
This is a damn shame. As someone who has one foot in the industry I am 100% in solidarity with the actors and especially the writers. However this was a necessary evil that needed to take place. This industry has been operating on a low vibrational evil for far too long. The industry will never be RIGHT until the evilness is purged out of it.
@@Mm-zr5qmEvery writer and actor isn't evil just because they work with or for people who are evil. You will find evil in every industry under the sun, but that doesn't make everyone in the industry evil.
Can relate. I had an experience with Motion Capture and voice acting and have to say even though gaming industry is a colossus these days, voice over actors and mo cap performers are not fully considered 'equal' talent as traditional actors. What's really interesting right now is that the mainstream, 'regular' actors demand royalties for their digital likeness when it's used on new projects they are not technically involved with. Something MoCap actors could relate to... What really shoud be addressed is the disparity by default between the wages of (male) actors and the rest of the film crew that are excruciating. The so called 'below-the-line' workers who are not considered 'talent' and yet are essential to the whole production process. PS. You almost saw me as Leon in the new Resident Evil games.
Actually, good and … finally. Hollywood is so toxic that it has to get shaken so now and then. BTW, @makayla, as a lawyer, if you ever decide to change your profession I would recommend trying law, or politics. Your articulation, research skills, the way you handle explaining information is a blessing… I think you would do great! Maybe you could go into human rights.
That’s what my husband does. Perfect solution! Once in the industry you could also do some producing on the side…later on. Some lawyers do that here, in Europe. And honestly, if you choose to move on and be persistent - it’s their loss, big time! How do Americans say it? You GO GIRL 👏👏 and good luck.
As an aspiring writer and actress I am so thankful to all of the people currently on strike. You are working to create a more fair and fruitful industry for us to go into and I am so grateful for that.
Fair and fruitful industry.😅🤣😂😅🤣. What about the paedophilia, the sexual violence. I guess these issues aren't as important as money. If the industry shuts down a lot of the world will be happy. No great loss. Hollywood is shit.
@@josephwinder6878 Those are issues in the industry, they are bad and I acknowledge that. Working to create something means small steps. We can’t fix the industry overnight but just with these strikes things are already looking up.
@wolfiegirlxox so when you get what u want you will take up the fight against Hollywood paedophile rings? The rapes. Coercion etc. I would have thought children being sexually assaulted and traded like animals is not as important as your cause! I doubt things are " looking up" for these victims.
Has anyone brought up the fact that writers are completely s*** and been doing nothing but losing money for the investors, the quality of movie and TV shows has never been lower 😂
Now just asking are the foreign industries in China and India affected and if not is it a chance that their movies will fill the movie theaters here during the strike
As someone who wants to be an actor, this is so frustrating, but I'll be looking into content creation as well so maybe I can build up that while these issues go on and support as much as possible!
you don't have to join the losers' club to be an actor lmaooo hundreds of thousands aren't, and they're well off. Can't say the same about sag trash tho 🥱
@@The_world_is_not_worthy_of_Him And here we have the extremely common one who's upset with their own life so they feel the need to be rude toward others
I am not an actor or writer. But I am taking a college major in film. I have a passion for music as well and want to study production in both categories. As for this, I am just devastated that the studios are doing this. How could they? They straight-up said “let them go broke!” That sounds like the line of a dictator. Let’s hope SAG AFTRA and WGA overcome these greedy studios. I share my support with all the creators and Actors in the union. Keep striking and don’t give. Your not alone.
I'm not a SAG member, but I'm an actor nonetheless, and I've been blessed to act alongside many of the most amazing actors I've ever seen, who aren't members either. We act because it's what we love. It is an art and craft we value. ALL actors, whether Guild members or not, have the right to keep doing what they love! And no filthy rich Hollywood big shots have the right to take that away from us with all their fancy-schmancy techno crap they're using to render anyone not in their class obsolete! 😡✊ #FightThePower
I'm in the indie filmmaking world and I'm a woman who's a big advocate for demanding what you're worth. I remember having to set a budget for the talent for my film and I felt so low because I'm thinking to myself, "these actors and film crew deserve so much more. This is just way too low". This strike is so neccessary.
This is going to get ugly. The studio owners and executives are greedy and entitled, and they're willing to do whatever it takes to get their way. If actors and writers want a fair deal they should toughen up real fast and be ready to fight.
It’s going to take the A-list actors and producers to stand on the picket lines to enact any change. We will see…. I’ve seen a few speaking up about it but they’ll need so many.
I’m a theatre actor just getting into this whole thing (been acting since February) and this is highly disturbing that the people that make the rich people money and creating lasting characters and stories are literally being abused and treated like slaves.
Very insightful, Makayla. In a fair world, working actors/writers/creators would be valued and paid equally. I majored in Creative Media (specifically in Screenwriting but I also focused on Public Relations and Digital Communication) so I can have other options because I know from the get go acting/writing is an industry that's based on big connections, and many I know who had prestigious acting training didn't even get one bit of opportunity on the screen. Just graduated now, and I'm focusing on PR/social media in finding jobs, though I'm still thinking if I should continue writing scripts/acting - probably as a side job (I've always done community theater and may just be happy continuing with it). I also have original songs I release on iTunes and Spotify. With everything that's going on including the strike and rise of AI, I don't want to be in an industry that always makes us compete for jobs/roles, where we always have to jump from one project to another and live from paycheck to paycheck. For now, I'm seeking stability, and if I do get in the industry, I'd be fine with Hallmark and non-Hollywood media productions/companies. Let me know how everyone get on. All the best to you all.
Reading about the lack of residuals was sad, even worse was the AI shit the studios were proposing. Silly that one of the ceos said that it was unreasonable while he gets paid handsomely along with some ridiculous bonuses. Every screenwriting book, talking head and other people always talking about "STORY IS KING" well pay the damn writers. They are nothing without the writers, and even though there is material I do not care to watch, there are still diamonds in the dirt so its stupid to me that these folks are struggling. Spielberg saw the writing on the wall, too many movies costing 200+ million dollars and flopping, being so risk adverse you almost refuse to give new and hungry filmmakers a chance, nearly wiping out the mid budget film that folks cling onto whatever Nolan, Villeneuve, and Peele release in the studio system. So much fucking greed and honestly I hope it all burns down and shit can start over. Like William Goldman said, "Nobody knows anything."
I'm not a filmmaker in any way, but it does make sense that this is perhaps the most important hollywood strike ever. The plateau of streaming services coupled with the forthcoming capabilities of AI means that all creatives have to make sure they aren't being taken advantage of. It makes sense that the studios would want to optimize their profits, but using people's talent in perpetuity without compensating them accordingly is quite greedy. I just hope that the language of the final agreement has quite a bit of foresight in it (i.e., doesn't simply think about what AI is capable of today but of what it's likely capable of 10-20 years from now).
As a writer/creator, this is sad but will be a great thing in the end. I hope this inspires not only people in the industry, but other industries to strive for more and not just accept what’s given. Yes we all have to put food on the table, but it does not excuse the fact that we are the ones doing the work. Maybe we just become autonomous. It might be a big, scary change, but obviously we need that change. I hope we come out of this better and stronger as a collective!
Red alert also This is honestly so terrifying for someone who is trying to break into the acting industry. I really appreciate you making videos like this to inform me and other people about what’s going on in Hollywood!
I'm an actor in Texas and have been for years now. I've never seen residuals and I had heard they weren't a thing anymore 🤷🏼♀️ but it's sickening that people can think that way and say they are doing what they're doing until people lose their homes. That's terrible.
As a teacher and proud union member, I stand in solidarity with WGA and SAG-AFTRA. My union is currently negotiating a new contract as well, and the offers from the school district have been utterly cruel and laughably cartoon villainish. You guys rock! I wish you all well! Good Luck!!
I wish I could say I am surprised by Hollywood’s greed and apathy toward it's workers. Unfortunately, I can’t. I 100% stand behind you and the other creatives! Personally, I would love to see Hollywood get a big reminder that they have no money without you and without their audience. They've forgotten who made them the giants they are and that giants can still fall.
I'm from the Philippines. I used to fantasize about becoming a Hollywood actress and moving to LA when I was a kid. But my middle-class family could not afford it. Now, I'm 30 years old and working for an ordinary insurance company. I'm glad I did not pursue acting as a career, even though I studied theatre arts, communication, and acting in college. What I've come to realize is, Hollywood is simply any other industry. Actors are like other humans doing their craft and working for a job. They should NOT be put on a high pedestal, as if they're above any other human beings just because they are those we see on social media, TV, or film. There are only a few people out there who pursued acting because it's their passion or natural in-born talent. The majority of the population pursues it in hopes of fame, glam, image, and money. What makes me even sad is that the middle-class actors including those creatives like the staff, the writers, the stylists, and those behind the scenes are not paid well. They're SO undervalued. And the 2% which consists of the "spoiled superstars" we know do little effort, but they get billions of dollars in honor of their reputation and bankable names in the industry. The allocation is just insanely UNFAIR.
As someone who is currently studying to be an actor in theatre, I find your videos really helpful for when I do want to break into film and tv acting. And as a fellow Christian I really appreciate/look up to you for how you stand by your faith and beliefs especially in Hollywood. Trust in Him and everything will work out just fine. Saying this from experience. And I hope to work with you in the future. :) God bless!
Red Alert! As an actor myself, I was hoping that the actors would strike! I am non-union, but seeing everything that has been going on within the industry recently, it's been ridiculous. The greed from these studios are insane, and the fact that writers and actors are being punished for their mistakes in regards to streaming just makes no sense to me. Some of those residual checks from streaming are just laughable. I've done my first and only co-star role about 2 years ago, and the residual's I've received from the TV airings of that episode compared to the streaming are completely night and day. I hope both the writers and fellow actors truly win this fight! Stay Strong!! ✊
This situation is horrible! Thank you so much makayla for everything you do! You inspire me everyday! Your an incredible screenwriter and actress! 🚨Red Alert 🚨 Makayla, thank you for explaining this so clearly. It breaks my heart to think that these studios would really concider letting computer generated people take over from actors. The authenticity and connection we get through actors would be entirely lost 😣
@@Danuxsy there will be a point in the future where you literally can describe the type of programming you want with the type of actors and the plot and AI will be able to create a customized show for you within minutes.
Labor and Capital are always in contradiction with each other. This is something socialists have always observed. They want to maximise profit but the worker wants better wages and pay. These executives think that they can exploit workers but what we will see with these strikes is that without the workers the executives have zero profit.
Make-up artists are also effected by AI as well. AI was used on Harrison Ford to make him look younger for that new Indiana Jones movie. Remember with The Exorcist Max von Sydow was 44 years old in that movie. The make-up crew took 4 hours to make him look old.
I wanted to be a screenwriter, now 67, retired as a libn., worked on this craft for 7 yrs. it's very hard to make it doing this, this strike may crush the industy for some time to come, very sad to see this
Exactly. That's how STUBBORN they are due to greed. @ 6:00 I 100% BELIEVE that article because it 'shows how some of the richest in society think. I came across it Friday & it's disturbing but I suspect these parasites let the media put it out there as a WARNING/heads up 🤔 They are out of touch with the working class ppl in their industry & they don't care. I FEAR they are going to financially & mentally try to BREAK this union into submission.
@@KaiS-yj8oh Completely agree. The only thing that will make them ‘budge’ is if the audience turns against them and their reputation starts taking a hit. Unfortunately, I don’t think we as an audience are that selfless to potentially go without entertainment for a while and I also don’t think this strike and the reasons are being publicised enough to make people care.
As an actor myself, I've learned that you should accept any job, cause when it comes to the entertainment industry you want to take any opportunity doesn't matter if you play as a tree or it doesn't matter how many lines you have. The only thing that is wrong with AI is that it can be illegal if they use someone's face without their permission or approval can be considered copyrighted, but it would be different if the actor signed a contract or an agreement. Background actors don't get paid a lot, because mostly supporting, recurring, and main roles would get paid the most because their characters are what portray the story, while background characters are there to add more realism in a public setting or background setting. But the lack of episodes on streaming services does display that they should be less greedy and focus more on making entertainment and respectable payments. But AI has already taken over some jobs, from artists, singers/rappers, and now actors.
If you're interested, there is a very recent Black Mirror episode that covers this exact topic- AI taking actors faces and rendering an entire TV show without any actual writers or actors involved. The episode is called Joan is Awful and with the recent strikes it is very prevalent

You should do a video on your opinion on the outcome of all of this. Lets say for example the studios drag this out for 1 year. How many people will be job less and after to start over in a whole other career. Lets say the studios never give in to the demands what will happen then. You guys can't strike forever, you have to eat, pay bills etc. So the studio exces are waiting to see how long you guys can keep this up. they have the money to keep this up 5 plus years. Hi from Australia. Your comment about the possible increase in reality shows brought back a memory from some decades ago. I spent almost every night watching television, but as reality shows became more prevalent, my television watching began to reduce. I then, through my son and daughter, began to get interested in community theatre, first working backstage before going on stage. Over the past 20 odd years I have acted / sang in, worked on, wrote, or directed many community theatre productions. I hardly watch television now, I don't have time. My daughter is currently with Harry Potter in London.
Red Alert. Thank you for making this - I learned a lot. Hollywood is NOTHING without the writers and actors/crew members who are the engine that keep the industry running. I stand in solidarity with them.
You took a break at the perfect time! Companies, especially already established companies with millions to billions are continuously greedy! They make changes that only benefits them without any fairness of the user. On top of this, inflation has been crazy! It’s very sad.
It kinda shows how out of touch they are. Like…yes, there are some people who “support” the CEOs (but we’re actually only against artistic types due to their prejudices). But most people support workers and think the CEOs are evil for trying to starve artists to avoid paying them a livable wage. Like, what works do you live in where saying “starving them out and making them homeless,” is an okay thing to say.
Is anyone talking about what happens if labor wins in this fight? Streaming companies are hemorrhaging money making tons of shows to fit each niche audience to optimize their algos' profitability. This might be a blessing in disguise for the big media corps. They'll pay better wages and also give residuals, but there might end up being a lot less shows they're footing the bill for because of it. Basically, less jobs, but better pay. I haven't heard anything about this possible outcome, just wondering if it has come up in discussions. edit (another thought): Labor wants to regulate the one-time payment for actors' digital likeness, that too could backfire. This could be the nudge needed for Hollywood to invest in implementing existing tech like stable diffusion. They don't even need to scan real humans, AI can make up faces from scratch ensuring that no actor, especially background actors get paid. (Admittedly, automating animation via simple text commands is not market ready, but it's getting there). It reminds me of McDonald's response to the push for livable wages. They just started putting kiosks in restaurants, replacing workers much sooner with machines than they would've been otherwise.
I was done with Hollywood a while back. I don’t go to movies, watch TV, or subscribe to streaming anymore. I just don’t want to pay to be insulted, denigrated or preached to by people whom with I disagree on morals and values. So, I won’t miss the content. That being said, I respect the attempts to be paid for value created. Much success with your strike and future career. I hope you get fair contracts in future.
Red Alert! Wow, you perfectly explained this whole strike situation from both sides. Glad you mentioned not only actors and writers are out of work… cameras, DOPs, boom ops, DITs, gaffers, etc are affected as well. Hopefully this gets resolved soon🙏.
There has never been a better time in history to show that the era of Hollywood is over. This is now the era of Streamers, TH-camrs and other independent content creators. The movie star is a bygone relic.
Streamers rely on actors and writers. You going to watch AI generate sh*te? Didn't think so. People should be paid a decent wage for a decent job. I'm talking about 99% of actors and writers are grinding out a living for your and my entertainment and not your 1% hollywood elite.
While I feel for this actress, I have to say that the writing for recent programming has been AWFUL! Many people like myself are asking where’s the creativity and originality?? We the viewer are sick of the lazy writing out there, example; rebooting old shows, lots of trashy reality tv, boring competitions. The writing has fallen to a new low. So no, I am not for them making more money until I see some more ingenuity and creativity.
Red Alert!! I am currently in South Africa but I completely support everything that’s going on with the unions. South Africa is way worse than you can imagine actor are not even taken seriously. People can literally create their own studios and networks at this point. There are so many independent filmmakers and writers who make far better films now a days than actual studios. Why not just focus on a newer generation of “Hollywood” we are so reliant on old establishments from hundreds of years ago. Start a new era! Just like the music industry. Instead of signing shitty deals, just go independent.
Girl did you know that’s there’s a movie called sound of freedom that is about child trafficking and in PR they’re tryna cancel it (not the people the cinemas) by not only giving the movie JUST ONE ROOM TO BE ABLE TO WATCH IT EVEN THO IT GETS JAMMED PACKED EVERY SINGLE TIME but they’re making up excuses to make the people PAY FOR THEIR TICKETS and then have to leave the theater due tu a sudden “inconvenience “ currently i believe it’s bc Hollywood has sensualised minors so much to the point where it would be considered strange to have a movie that contradicts THE INDUSTRY IN GENERAL. It’s disgusting how it’s come to this point please give the movie some love I watched it and it was incredible and obviously terrifying ( due to it revealing the truth about predators and how there are more slaves than when it was legal) It shows that Hollywood is most likely not gonna get better and that’s the sad part 😢 watch it and spread awareness cuz if we make this a GLOBAL PHENOMENON it possibly could change the industry and it’s horrifying ways. Love u Makayla❤
I disagree that studios wanting to keep as much of their profits is greed. What exactly is greed? Wanting to keep your money is not greed. Every person gets to be paid based on the value that they provide the company not based on what the company makes, because Production companies carry the risk they have to compensated based on the risk that they take. Unless you have run a company that employees that are in the hundred of thousands I don't think that you can say you what it is like to run a complex company like a Production company/studio or just running a company that has thousands of people depending on it employees/contractors/su-contractors. It is a big responsibility and a big risk, and these companies get paid based on the risk they are taking. They have to take loans in Billions of dollars to build the infrastructure needed to produce shows, they are the ones who take the risk fr these loans, not you, and since they take the risk they also have the right to the profits. Also just because you are not earning Millions of dollars does not mean you are living in poverty. and let's be real majority of people in Hollywood are not earning minimum wages so they are the furthest thing from living in poverty, collective bargaining is a right sure, you go in you negotiate but here it is not just workers who have rights the Studios have rights too. Life is about choices and trade offs. Creative workers made a choice to go into a sector that is unstable without a stable income that was choice that you all made, and you can't escape the consequence of that choice. Also if you make it big in this sector you can earn millions of dollars, so you can't pick and choose which part of being in this sector applies to you. Every single person who ventures to start a business often taking their life savings into that shit, they know they can lose it, that is a choice they make, and also if they make it big they make it big, many have lost it all, and this just part and parcel of the choice they made. We all have to live with the choices we have made, or make a different choice. You are in a gig economy that was your choice, the choice comes with consequences. When I studied engineering and went to make a living working in engineering I also can't escape the consequence of that choice. I chose stability, I chose a high paying job which is stable, with benefits that is a choice that I made. And when I first moved to the US, I chose to live in Texas, mainly because of the living costs that a very low, while earning a high salary (over $130k) and which means I get to keep most of the money (I don't pay state Taxes, my living costs are much lower), compared to if I lived in California or New York. Those are choices, and that was part of my calculus in making the choice. And when yall choose to live in California you have to accept the consequences of living in place that is clearly not affordable. That is choice and those are the consequences. And we cannot ignore the fact that no one can afford to live in California, unless they are very rich,. why? because of all the bad policies of the democrats have been running there in the past 50 years. Ad the question really is why should companies be paying for all the bad policies that make it impossible for people to live there? Why is it the fault f Netflix for instance that the democrats have made the Bay area almost impossible to live in unless you are earning over $350k? Yet alll of you come 2024 elections you will be endorsing the same lunatic policies that made the mess that is California, and so for you to survive there you want what a raise? Democrats been destroying LA for the past 50 years but wen it came time for a new Mayor to be elected what yall do, you voted them back in how exactly are you complaining about inflation? We are doing just fine in Texas, Florida, Tennessee. The problems yall are facing there will not be solved by money. it ill be like throwing good money after bad money. The entertainment industry is one of the most unstable, unpredictable sectors there are in the world and no one forces anyone to go to this sector you all go there of your own choice of your volition. And some of you get make a lot of money, and some of you until you make it you need to deal with the consequences of your choice. Other than that, people around the US having bigger problems than the problems faced by creatives. I see the homeless every day who have little to no choice. There is no possible scenarios where i can agree that a company keeping their profits is greedy, but you wanting their money you are not greedy. we all have to negotiate based on the value we provide a company. Non of you are earning below or even close to the California minimum wage which is ($15 per hour) yall are earning more than that and by far, but you are saying the studios are greedy. Perhaps this is the reason why I live in Texas and not in California because I can't possibly agree with this.
We are so grateful for this video! I'm from Britain and act and write, and have also had experience with US/European industries, and honestly, this can't come soon enough. I just remember the feelings of dispondency that the immovability of corruption, abuse and greed gave me! and i chose to quit acting for years. We're ten years apart, yet everything you've been thru (in your video where you describe wrenching anxiety!!) i have been thru too! So EROKAMANO / thank u! Keep going and i support the strikers and the strike!
I hope these union members remember all of this when they criticize coal country and fracking. I support the actors but they didn’t have so much empathy when they told people to go into new careers when their jobs are being replaced. Now they understand how it feels.
It’s so important that we as actors/performers/creatives stand for this! Our futures are in the hands of people and cooperations who don’t necessarily have our best interests at heart, so this is our chance to make a positive change in Hollywood and the film industry~ 🚨‼️
I predict there will be a rise in Indie/non-union films created by people who are actually passionate about film/movies rather than those who do it just for a quick buck or pushing an agenda. Everyone seems all gloom about the strike but I think it will be positive for the overall state of Hollywood or mainstream film in the future.
🚨RED ALERT! 🛑 I am a new writer after two decades as an Army officer and I completely stand for the creators and artists demanding the corporate machine acquiesce to paying for the work they create. Writing is deeply personal art that moves society forward, giving humanity the gift of introspection and providing a release valve through entertainment. This is the most important fight for an artist; demanding compensatory worth within a current market value. Your courage to stand is something to be admired and supported. I support you!
Congrats on your retirement. I retired as a U.S. Army Officer in 2013 after 24 years of service. I’m not a writer or actor but I enjoy reading different genres of topics and information. Good luck with your writing career.
Thanks Makayla for the well-explained video on this situation! It's really a shame this is happening. As someone who is also in the creative industry, I firmly stand in solidarity with SAG-AFTRA and the WGA. Thanks for all you do! 🚨Red Alert! ‼
It’s awesome to see an actor speak up when others are too scared too. But can we blame them? Hollywood is a very unforgiving job that can leave many people in deep stress and depression for how they are treated and their mouths are forced shut because, well if they spoke up their job would be on the line. We all appreciate u doing this ❤
Hi Makayla I appreciate that you’re still posting even though it’s really hard for us actors these days 💖💗✨ Honestly you’re a diamond for/ in the industry 💎 💗
As the "studios" became more removed from the actual production of "product", the idea that the people who create content (the writers, directors, technicians, and actors) should be compensated is becoming less apparent. The problem is that so many streaming services are using old content, recycling old TV shows (FRIENDS, GILMOUR GIRLS, et al) and they have not been paying residuals because the cycle of residual payments ended with the last times that those shows were in syndication (i.e., on television or cable stations). This really IS a situation of greed (on behalf of the executives) as opposed to any possible compensation for creatives. The question really is: how can the AMPTP (which is allowing the streaming services to lead in the negotiations) not recognize that the creatives deserve adequate compensation? BTW i've worked in movies for over 50 years, in many capacities in terms of "independent" productions, and i've NEVER seen such a horrendous impasse!
RED ALERT!!!! As a teacher I feel what all the participants are going through. These producers need to learn that they CANNOT continue to be greedy as they have been doing over the years. People NEED and DESERVE to have a living wage. Keep being strong and keep walking those picket lines. I may go to Hollywood (literally) (I live here in California) to walk the picket lines. Your future is going to shine brighter from this sacrifice. You and everyone walking are in my prayers. God's blessings always.
🚨RED ALLERT🚨 I think it’s really sad that all of this is happening, as a musical theatre child actor in the UK it’s VERY different and there is not much we can do, I didn’t even know about this until this video. So thanks so much Makayla for making this video and spreading awareness! Everyone has my support during this tough time!
In the heart of Hollywood's bright domain, A saga of greed brings forth a strain, The curtain falls on stages grand, As actors and writers take a stand. Hollywood is shutting down, it seems, A realm of fantasies, hopes, and dreams, Greed's allure has cast its spell, Yet artists rise, their stories to tell. Writers with their pens of fire, Crafting tales that never tire, They've inked the scripts of silver screens, Now demanding rights beyond the scenes. Actors, too, with talents vast, Stepping into roles so vast, Their passion fuels each frame and line, But greed's shadow seeks to undermine. Together they unite, hearts aligned, For fairness and respect, they've signed, A strike declared, a drama unfolds, In the heart of stories yet untold. Hollywood is shutting down, it's true, As writers and actors voice their view, A tale of unity in the face of greed, A battle for what their craft needs. May the negotiations find a way, To mend the cracks that mar the day, In this realm where stories bloom, Let harmony and justice resume. As Hollywood pauses, the spotlight dimmed, May resolutions be soon trimmed, From this struggle, a stronger creed, Where creativity triumphs over greed.
how is it actually? like to start acting, i think there are a few costs, like maintenance, preparing costs and of course materials and produktion costs, can you tell me a bit about it, just curious because acting is an acutal like fable like business so magical and interesting.
@@petervonfrosta244honestly, acting is very cool and it is a amazing skill, but it is not a easy road (especially now). you usually start with acting classes to get better skills and a better chance of getting into things, it doesn’t sound very fun but you usually start with commercials to build your resume and after some experience, you can start auditioning but it is a lot of rejection. this doesnt mean you cant get into a movie, but it wont be too easy
The good are suffering with the bad, unfortunately. But there needs to be a purge. There's so much evil that has taken place in the industry and that part needs to end.
I’m from Melbourne, not in the industry but feel for the pain of what lies ahead you all. Had no idea it’s only 2% of actors who become wealthy from acting profession. U r a great communicator Makatla….hoping for a speedy resolution.
Unions are integral to people getting treated at all close to human beings. I worry and mourn for everyone who's out of work right now, and hope the studios can dredge up an ounce of humanity to stop hurting everyone who works with/for them. This is despicable, but sadly unsurprising. 💜🚨
I’ve been a pharmacist for 28 years. I have wanted to unionize from day 1. Guess what? Anytime I brought it up my schedule would have fewer and fewer hours. I have been treated despicably. Never a union … never an HR department that cared. Meanwhile I gave my life and health to help people. The pandemic.. well, now I have Long Covid and am disabled. I’ve lost my home, all retirement, my vehicle and savings. I’m disabled and am waiting to hear from the government about SSD. Is anyone there to help me? No. I have a doctorate yet I’d rather work somewhere there is a union doing anything else. That is IF I can physically do it. At least I’m out of the wheelchair and only need a cane for the 1-2 days I feel well enough to move.
🚨 I'm sadly not surprised they're being greedy like this but it still hurts. I'm not at all involved in this but it's still heartbreaking to see people's talents and worth being under appreciated. Especially when the money's there, they're just feeding it to people who don't need it. I which these industries were more humane. My jaw literally dropped when I saw the article that said they planned on waiting it out and letting people starve/lose their homes. I don't even know how you come back from a comment like that.
Studios have been minimizing costs and minimizing risk for a long time this has sacrificed quality and the audience satisfaction. I am tired of jump cuts in movies, no decent story, so many properties dumping on my demographic, silly tone dead dialogue, the virtue signalling from everyone involved, token efforts of inclusion and properties suffering for this inclusion. Ridiculous actors with no integrity dumping on fans, and society as though they are on another level or some sort of leader. Money corrupts and Hollywood is addicted to too much money and willing to screw anything to get it. I think 99% of SAG members don't even make enough money to live. The whole industry is built on exploitation current times have just happened to cause a situation which impacts the 1%. Studios need to be reinvented, what is the benefit of having all this collective IP and power in something like Disney. I watch foreign films now, subtitles are not ideal but they are created with care, unlike so much Hollywood content.
As an independent musician who creates content for music libraries I have seen my percentages (passive/ residual income) get slashed from 50% to 30% to pennies on the dollar when the library went to a subscription. I have tremendous respect for what you doing. Keep up the good work and stay strong!
Thank you so much for informing actors worldwide what's really going on with the business. You didn't own this to nobody and despite of taking a step back due to personal reasons you took your time to keep us updated...it doesn't go unnoticed. Thank you once again.
Red Alert 🚨 I'm so happy to see you bringing awareness to writer and creator rights. It's so unfortunate what is happening right now. Change is coming soon! Well Alright!
As someone who works in the industry I’m glad people are seeing how this businesses profit of artist worj but don’t pay them fairly , some do but over 90 percent don’t, if union workers are getting screwed what do u think happens to non union talent?
Red Alert! Great video. I am an actor/writer from LA but not in LA at the moment. 100% support the strikes. It’s great to see content keeping people not in LA part of the loop.
RED ALERT! I am not an actor, I am actually an aspiring author, so I fully understand the struggle of "making it." I, unfortunately, don't have the time or ability to join you on the picket lines, but my heart goes out to all of you. Good luck to all of you and I'll definitely be coming back to your channel and watching your stuff on repeat to help out. Love you and stay strong.
@@jmhorange exactly!! I personally don’t have a problem with AI at all. The problem is the people using it and using it to replace the human touch within a project or industry.
@@AnimeAlchemistCafe Yeah not against AI, it can do a lot of great things. But I work in animation and Disney Marvel just used AI to do the intro to their Disney+ series, Secret invasion. Far less people were needed than if they hired artists to do it without AI, busting the myth that companies, on their own without AI regulations, will use AI to enhance and create jobs, not eliminate them.
A few months ago I did my first background acting gig, and since I've never been on a set before (other than my own filming projects at home) I was in awwwe! However it turned into a very LONG production day, 14 hrs on set, and didn't get paid much. So reality hit pretty quickly with how these things go. I hope the strikes can change the industry for the better so REAL ART and scripts can be used, with REAL talent. I would hope I can dip my feet in more into the industry but it is VERY scary and HARD like Makayla said.
Red alert! As a creative myself I stand with y’all. Much love from Texas!! Stand strong. Hollywood can’t stand without their creatives and the CEOs know it.
I’m a BG(background) actor and crew member myself, but I’m non-union. The whole issue with AI is pretty scary itself for Union actors who have “rights” which what the SAG is fighting for, and it’s crazy because the way most Non-Union BG actors get eligible to join the Union is through 2-3 SAG waivers (when you’re allowed to work as union member due to various factors). If studios were to do what they are proposing to do, that will be especially hard to get those waivers, because studios would technically own our likeness forever as well.
What are your thoughts on this situation? 💭
I guess soap dramas will take over my free time 😂
Hi

By design, most of the country are ignorant about labor movements. The media and politicians have been complicit in destroying unions. It's not just Hollywood; it's every industry embracing rampant greed. We really need a general strike to stop this.

RED ALERT ! I'm an actor in Brazil and for me it was the same ! I became a content creator exactly to wide opportunities !
However never sacrifice your mental health for this industry! It broke my heart to see you cry in the last video! I have one request, could you possibly make a video about how to become an actor/ actress in the UK? Thank you so much for reading! ❤️❤️ (sorry if this was too much to read!)
As an aspiring Actress I'm completely heartbroken watching this and I'm anxiety ridden about my future😭 I hope AMPTP listens. I Fiercely Stand with SAGAFTRA and the WGA 🎬🎭🎞️❤️📽️
🚨Red Alert 🚨 Makayla, thank you for explaining this so clearly. It breaks my heart to think that these studios would really concider letting computer generated people take over from actors. The authenticity and connection we get through actors would be entirely lost 😣
Writers too! They're the unsung heroes of all of our media
@@mister_manager most of our media is garbage, good riddance I suppose. AI might finally be able to generate personalized content for us.
I wanted to be a screenwriter, now 67, retired as a libn., worked on this craft for 7 yrs. it's very hard to make it doing this, this strike may crush the industy for some time to come, very sad to see this
Red Alert 🚨
It’s wild to me that the studios have the money to burn to wait this out but not negotiate with writers and actors. Make it make sense.
They make more in the long run if they get their way.

@@MakaylaLysiak Realistically, the studios have the money to to drag this out for however long. As sad as it is to say, they will not lose. Plus they can get content from youtube people and reality tv for cheap. TH-cam people want easy money so they would take those gigs. I think unless you are like tom cruise and they who can live for years without getting paid, its going to be hard. II think that article you allege is very true. they are going to break them and the studios have the money to win this in the long haul sadly.

It's going to get worse before it gets better.
Hollywood and corporations only care about money. They never will care about people. Unless they can make money for them.
You took a break at the perfect time! Companies, especially already established companies with millions to billions are continuously greedy! They make changes that only benefits them without any fairness of the user. On top of this, inflation has been crazy! It’s very sad.
i was thinking this too. she is blessed. she took a break at the perfect time.
RED ALERT!
Musicians caught the bad end of this first with streaming music. It was just a matter of time before everyone else was going to be affected.
Im so sad to hear how these upcoming actresses are treated and i do agree that they have gotten greedy for money
This is just very disappointing! CEOs are getting a lot of money while actors and writers are just mistreated. CEO’s response pissed me off.
Yep same here
Red Alert! Wow, you perfectly explained this whole strike situation from both sides. Glad you mentioned not only actors and writers are out of work… cameras, DOPs, boom ops, DITs, gaffers, etc are affected as well. Hopefully this gets resolved soon🙏.

Streamers rely on actors and writers. You going to watch AI generate sh*te? Didn't think so. People should be paid a decent wage for a decent job. I'm talking about 99% of actors and writers are grinding out a living for your and my entertainment and not your 1% hollywood elite.

We the viewer are sick of the lazy writing out there, example; rebooting old shows, lots of trashy reality tv, boring competitions. The writing has fallen to a new low. Let’s go back to the 90s and make black cinema great again..idk that just seemed like a cool era maybe we should revisit it
People can literally create their own studios and networks at this point.
Yep...Get out there and make it happen...Lots of Indy studios are churning out some great stuff these last few years and making good money from it
We appreciate your insights and thoughts on various matters. We will support you no matter what.
This is crazy man. Please keep talking about this Makayla
We are so grateful for this video!

I think they just sealed the deal on their own demise not understanding that their customers are checked out.
This!! I don't feel bad for those pompous elitists

It’s awesome to see an actor speak up when others are too scared too. But can we blame them? Hollywood is a very unforgiving job that can leave many people in deep stress and depression for how they are treated and their mouths are forced shut because, well if they spoke up their job would be on the line. We all appreciate u doing this ❤
Hi Makayla I appreciate that you’re still posting even though it’s really hard for us actors these days 💖💗✨
Honestly you’re a diamond for/ in the industry 💎 💗

In the heart of Hollywood's bright domain,
A saga of greed brings forth a strain,
The curtain falls on stages grand,
As actors and writers take a stand.
Hollywood is shutting down, it seems,
A realm of fantasies, hopes, and dreams,
Greed's allure has cast its spell,
Yet artists rise, their stories to tell.
Writers with their pens of fire,
Crafting tales that never tire,
They've inked the scripts of silver screens,
Now demanding rights beyond the scenes.
Actors, too, with talents vast,
Stepping into roles so vast,
Their passion fuels each frame and line,
But greed's shadow seeks to undermine.
Together they unite, hearts aligned,
For fairness and respect, they've signed,
A strike declared, a drama unfolds,
In the heart of stories yet untold.
Hollywood is shutting down, it's true,
As writers and actors voice their view,
A tale of unity in the face of greed,
A battle for what their craft needs.
May the negotiations find a way,
To mend the cracks that mar the day,
In this realm where stories bloom,
Let harmony and justice resume.
As Hollywood pauses, the spotlight dimmed,
May resolutions be soon trimmed,
From this struggle, a stronger creed,
Where creativity triumphs over greed.
It sucks that the film companies are being like this

@@petervonfrosta244honestly, acting is very cool and it is a amazing skill, but it is not a easy road (especially now). you usually start with acting classes to get better skills and a better chance of getting into things, it doesn’t sound very fun but you usually start with commercials to build your resume and after some experience, you can start auditioning but it is a lot of rejection. this doesnt mean you cant get into a movie, but it wont be too easy

Unions are integral to people getting treated at all close to human beings. I worry and mourn for everyone who's out of work right now, and hope the studios can dredge up an ounce of humanity to stop hurting everyone who works with/for them. This is despicable, but sadly unsurprising. 💜🚨

Novelists just filed a lawsuit against AI companies. This AI issue affects all Labor. We all gotta stand together to get AI companies regulated.
@@jmhorange ugh! I’m so sorry to hear that! I really hope regulations are decided soon.
