  • Here we have another epic crack, clean, and press project on two classic comics, Marvel Spotlight 2 and 6. In part 1 of this series, we focus on Marvel Spotlight 2, which is a square bound (prestige format) comic book. Pressing square bound books requires you to protect the spine from flattening and the cover from staple damage. You also need to press "low and slow" so that you don't melt the binding glue.
    Topics covered in the video:
    - "Cracking" graded comic books out of the case
    - Dry cleaning: • Marvel Spotlight: Part...
    - Using the "hot shots" method with the tack iron and ball bearing to remove dents: • Marvel Spotlight: Part...
    - Humidification using a mister style humidifier: • Marvel Spotlight: Part...
    - Pressing square bound books to protect the spine: • Marvel Spotlight: Part...

    Thanks! Great video. You, Immaculate Comics and Kaptain Myke have been a big help in me learning this craft. Think I'm up to 400 books done and still learn something new all the time. Have a GS ManThing in the press right now and hoping for a good squarebound outcome. What a great hobby to pick up thanks to the Pandemic! Cheers!

    Excellent video. What did you use to push the staples down? I can't seem to get them any flatter.

    • @epicomicologycomics
      @epicomicologycomics  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sometimes you can use a metal punch, the back of a pen, or something similar. Just be very careful. Most of the time it is better to leave them as is. If you mess with them too much, CGC may also think they were replacd.

    I have never heard of SRP paper. Are you referring to parchment paper? Awesome video, by the way!

    • @epicomicologycomics
      @epicomicologycomics  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      SRP is just a fancy acronym for Silicone Release Paper. You can check out U-Line for bulk SRP or Amazon for Katbite Parchment Paper. The key is to make sure that it does not have wax on any side. That will ruin your day...

    Did you ever get these back from submission yet? I'm curious to see the results.

    • @epicomicologycomics
      @epicomicologycomics  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have to do a video of all the results. MS2 came back a 6.5 (not a huge increase for all the work I put into it) and the MS6 came back an 8.5 (there was a stain on the back cover that PGX missed, which means that *surprisingly* overgraded it).

    When I’ve used a polymer eraser, it seems like it takes some of the gloss off. You don’t have that issue with yours?

    Love the fam in the background- sign of the times. Great video. I’m a new sub and will continue to watch whatever you publish. I’ve been collecting for nearly 40 years and have over 25k books. Many .10 and .12c books that I’d love to do some CP{R on once I learn to do what you’ve absolutely mastered.

      Thanks! I basically have two options... record the videos at night when the lighting is poor and I have to talk more softly or during the day when the light is better but the boys are running about! This one I went for the better lighting! Good luck with improving your skills! It really is a fun process and really exciting to be able to increase the value of your collection.

    Very professional work and it looks fun. I plan to dry clean my comics in the near future. I like your technique and the tools you are using for the cleaning process. But I noticed you do not use absorene putty to clean colored areas of the book. What are your thoughts regarding absorene?

    • @epicomicologycomics
      @epicomicologycomics  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      To be honest, I have never tried the putty. I think you find a way that works and kinda stick with it. The absorbene pads work really well for me. I have seen that if you don't use the putty correctly, you can leave a pink residue on the comic. I think that was why I was apprehensive to use it at first. It may be time to give it a try though!

    You mentioned that the distribution ink stain could be cleaned up a bit, I’d be interested to see you tackle that. I’ve got a giant size x-men 1 with a similar blue stain but much smaller than the one on the Ghost-rider in the video, it driving mad as its a nice clean copy other than that.

    • @epicomicologycomics
      @epicomicologycomics  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ll post some better before and after of the Marvel Spotlight 6. I was able to lighten it some using the Magic Eraser (sparingly) on the area. You aren’t going to be able to remove it completely but every little bit helps.

    • @stevef3453
      @stevef3453 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The videos you show are amazing, and I am starting to study them carefully. I really applaud you for the quality of your work. However, my experience with the magic eraser is that it is very abrasive and will remove any gloss that it is applied to and, yes it will remove color, like distribution ink stain, but goodbye to any of the gloss that was in that area. In general using dry cleaning to remove staining is an uphill battle at best. But, that is my opinion on the matter and it is certainly subject to debate. Again, your work is incredible and we are all learning and evolving together. Regards, Steve

    • @epicomicologycomics
      @epicomicologycomics  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@stevef3453 Thanks for the comment. You are 100% right... Magik Eraser is essentially ultra fine sandpaper made with melamine. I didn't stress that in this video, but I talk about it in another one. I use it extremely sparingly, only on color-free parts of the cover, and never on a glossy modern. It's best for situations where the gloss is already gone (e.g. Silvers) and even then I am hesitant. If you over do it, CGC will dock you and you will get "eraser marks to cover" in the notes.
      In this case is was a trade off between the distribution ink and the possible gloss loss. The grader notes specifically noted the overspray. So I took a gamble and will have to wait to see if it paid off.

      Thanks for the reply! I am into the dark arts of wet cleaning now :-) and will let you know if I come across any chemical that can help with distributor ink! Thx again, SfS

    • @richwujek3250
      @richwujek3250 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@epicomicologycomics I don't believe CGC takes off for ink over spray or distribution stripes. Granted, a comic would look more appealing if removed.

    I’ve never used a sealing iron before but after seeing the work you did with it here, I’m now seriously considering trying it out. Additionally the same can be said for the ball bearing roller. I’ve used that before very sparingly, but was curious if you wouldn’t mind sharing the ball bearing size / brand details, as well as the iron temp / preheat settings. I was very impressed with the corners work you did even before pressing.

    • @epicomicologycomics
      @epicomicologycomics  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the comments. I have one other video detailing the process, but overall it is very effective at addressing stubborn bends, indentations of writing, or divots. I use a 1.5" Chrome Steel Ball that I got off Amazon. The temp setting is between 2.5-3.0 (Don't go past 3). Once you try it out, it will become a routine tool in your toolkit! Here is the link the the ball bearing... you will notice that is must be comic pressers buying it because the two other recommended products are steel plates and 65lbs cardstock! www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0074VCQPA/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

      That is called "MIP" paper and is inserted by the grading company to preserve the book during encapsulization. You can use it as well - it prevents that old comic smell and yellowing of the pages.

    I have a question that maybe you could help me with, you seem to know a lot about comics, I’m getting multiple books from *DC* lately where the cover is shorter than the actual pages in the comic, so the actual pages of the comic stick out past the cover. Multiple *Death* *Metal* issues, *Future* *State,* both *Generation* *Shattered* & *Generations* *Forged,* *Batman:* *Urban* *Legends* & *Joker* are the most recent.
    Have you heard about this problem? Is this just my comics or does every single issue have this problem? It’s nearly entirely card stock covers, if a comic has a card stock variant I always get those, because I prefer them, I actually completely switched to variant covers during *Future* *State,* the variants are much nicer covers.
    So do you know why this is happening, and does it affect the grade if I sent them to CGC?

    • @epicomicologycomics
      @epicomicologycomics  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If it is a manufacturer defect that affects all the copies, then it won't be counted against you. The grabber tears on Amazing Spider-Man 361 are a perfect example. There are 9.8 with those defects because they affected a majority of the copies. I haven't seen this with DC because I don't collect those books, but you should be okay. It also reminds me that I haven't done a video on pressing cardstock covers. It is very hard to remove defects from them. You have to go lwer on the temperature. Thanks for the question!

    Title of the video is "Cracking, Cleaning, Pressing" but you skipped over the cracking part entirely, then you proceed to speed thru the cleaning without talking about the materials you're using to do it or what you're doing at all. I know you mentioned your other video about cracking but based on the lack of any process detail here I lost interest half way through. Thanks for the effort

    • @epicomicologycomics
      @epicomicologycomics  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry Raylon. Some of my other videos are definitely more detailed and I as such I didn't detail the process as well here. Also, I had to dump some of the video due to background noise. I can do better! And yes, I skipped the cracking part because to be honest, I am a little embarrassed about my strategy. I use my feet to hold the book in place while I go at it with a chisel and hammer! I will capture it next time though! My main purpose of this video was actually show how long it takes to process a book like this. It was over an hour of hands on time and I thought that was important to highlight.
