I love the magic erasers too. I cut them into 1-inch cubes to use. I also like polymer eraser tips that you can put on the end of a pen or pencil. I feel like I have more control over small parts of the book with the fine point of the eraser.
The eraser is a life saver for cleaning. You want to go slow. One side of those erasers seems more abrasive. I practiced on about 20 old beaters until I learned what worked. I take before and after shots with my iPhone. You will be amazed at the difference. It especially worked really good on the back covers and that's where a lot more dirt accumulates on the older ones. Once I was done I went over the entire cover ever so gently and wiped it with a soft cloth. Your 100% right the eraser is a huge help. You hear people saying it removes gloss but I never had an issue until I pressed really really hard which I did on a beater to see how much pressure it could take. Great video Regie.
The newer erasers definitely have ridges. 👎🏾 I don’t care for that. I have several of the older erasers that are perfectly flat. I prefer those. The difference really is amazing. And, you’re spot on regarding going slow and taking your time. You can ruin anything if you rush and/or do not pay attention.
excellent suggestion. I do the same thing when I buy valuable Raw comics before permanently adding it for storing but I use white cotton inspection gloves when cleaning abrasion and finger print because I can feel the grain of the cover more. I am 57 years old now and my eyes don't work as well as they use to, so I adapted my dads technique by using a large magnifying glass (when he check his coins) clamped to my glass work table with LED lamp for extra lighting. I also press my books using a T-Shirt press machine that I bought in E-Bay and afterward sandwiching it between two boards inside a clean mylar. I do not submit my books for grading but I do anything to keep them as fresh as possible.
Regie, you are the man! Great video. A lot of others refuse to share these kinds of skills and as always, you go above and beyond to share knowledge and skill sets that will help the community. Thank you, for all you do!
Haha, one more thing. I use microfiber cleaning towels out of the auto department in most stores I get them from the dollar store. They are lint free and absorbent. These towels will clean 90 percent of the comic without any ink removal I have found.
Brother absolutely killed this how to, awesome approach using a magic eraser. I never would have thought of it, and I’ve never witnessed for myself someone doing the same. Thank you for the value you bring
Great video Regie, enjoyed it very much. What advise would you offer for working an area that contains color breaking creases or ticks. Also any additional cleaning after removing the book from the moisture tank, right before pressing? Does the moisture assist in any way in removing something that wouldn’t come off previously?
I would clean the book before the moisture bath and press. This should be the first thing that is done. Anything outside of this would be experimentation that I would not want to communicate. Care should be taken with any defects (e.g., creases, bends, folds, tape, etc). Some folks prefer erasers that can be placed on the tip of a pencil for working in small tight areas.
I have purchased those microfiber cloths in a 50 pack for $10 at Menards. The rags pop out similar to a tissue box. I also use them to wipe down vinyl records. People also use magic erase to clean turntable stylus. Thanks for the information ℹ️
It's interesting to see the different techniques people have. Yours is the first to show the Magic Eraser. Also cool to assess various options to find the best fit
Make sure you practice on crap low to no value books please.. Love Regie and he has his own way.. I have to say their are alot of things missing from this video to safely clean comics.. When you wipe, please do not wipe in a back and forth motion you can cause scratches (too much pressure during microfiber) and dents.. If your going to use Regie's microfiber cloths fold it nicely into a 3"x3" or so square, use an unsharpened pencil with the eraser head as the handle or vice versa and use the weight of the pencil for your guide.. then wipe slowly and gently in clock wise and counter clock wise circles..
Im going to try your technique. I bought some cheap books with dirt and debris to try it out. You should clean one half and lea e one half dirty and show the difference! Awesome work!
I have a local comic store that dry clean and press for 20 dollars (Canadian) or 10 dollar if you send it off to CGC threw them. I'm to much of a newbie to try to clean for myself but one day I'll try one of my low nothing comic. Keep up the great work Reggie.
Great stuff man! I have never tried the magic eraser. I have used a soft regular eraser but have to be incredibly careful. Thanks for sharing this type of content that lots of people wont share for some reason.
Hey Regie. Great part at 24:00. Thats what I was looking for. I have seen other people use white eraser (for pencil), I have never seen your technique ! 25:40 R.I.P. Carnage. I am not cleaning modern books. Excellent advice about not using too much pressure. Any way of restoring a gloss ? Please clean the Gibbon in ASM 110. #gibbongang LOL
I had to show what would happen because folks would ask. 😂 Technically I warned you up front that something would happen. Pressure is such an important element of cleaning. I’m not sure of gloss can be restored. I’m also not sure what impact that would have on a book during the grading process. I’m certain that someone has figured out how to add gloss but that is beyond my experiences.
Incredible video! I lost my 10,000 book collection in 2011 to a house fire. Rebuilt a smaller collection since but alot of lower grade stuff. Have been thinking about getting into cleaning and pressing as a way to improve what I have and to reconnect with the hobby (as a collector/reader since 1981...it was a hard hit to lose it all). This is just what I needed to see. Thanks Regie!
You are very welcome. There is a full series on cleaning, pressing including a Q&A. I can’t imagine what it’s like to lose a collection but I’m glad that you’re still in the hobby. Be well.
Long time collector and tried different ways to clean and press comics this video helps a lot one for pressing comics is Teflon paper and iron works well I’m subscribing thanks.
I appreciate your post. I've always had an aversion to cleaning them for fear of damage but dry cleaning seems the least invasive and I'll give it a try. I've got plenty of boards and I just got the eraser. One question. You wipe down the book with a clean cloth first and I like that. How do you feel about treated wipe cloths like the type treated to pick up dust? I'm thinking chemicals but then again the Mr. Clean eraser would be similar. Your thoughts? Best.
I don’t use chemicals so I can’t comment. Sorry. I prefer to use mechanical means to clean. My goal is to use the least abrasive item to remove the most dirty from the comic as possible. Here is a new video on cleaning. Unfortunately the resolution had some issues but you should get the idea: th-cam.com/video/DZTYS2G3UJo/w-d-xo.html
I'm interested to see you send a comic to cgc as is to see it's grade, and when you get it back clean it, press it, and resubmit to see what the difference would be. It would probably be quite an investment but it would be cool to quantify how much value your work is!

Loving this!! Think I know the answer, but what do you do if there is dirt in a colored area? Just run the washcloth over it I’m assuming since the magic eraser would be bad. Or is there something else?
I use the cloth and the magic eraser. The magic eraser will remove everything if you press too hard but gentle pressure will allow you to remove the dirt before removing the ink. Look back at the footage of the Hulk book. It was dirty in the color and non-color areas. It's easier to show improvement for the purpose of video in the white areas but the process is the same.
Okay this is awesome 👏🏽 I swear I was going to say magic eraser on ready set go, and Ive always been a little scared to do cleaning on books even though I’m super ocd about cleaning my house 😂 You my friend are doing an amazing job thank you for the amazing videos!!
I have thought several times about adding the Magic Eraser to my cleaning arsenal, after seeing this I'll go ahead and pull that trigger. I will still be using my erasers as well as I have developed really good control over them through the years. I like that you added a Microfiber cloth too, that is one of my most important tools for comics. I also use a large make up brush to gently brush away the eraser crumbs. I can't recommend these enough from brushing off crumbs to dry brushing models and miniatures, they are amazing. My wife claims they can be used on the face to, but I find that a little far fetched. 8^) All in all some good tips, so thanks for the video, I'm certain that it helped some people out.
Your wife has no clue what’s she’s talking about. Zero. 😂🤪 The magic eraser popped into my head one day after watching my wife use the erase on my children’s shoes. Clearly these ladies are onto something. 😂🤪 Thanks for watching bro.
Hi Reggie. Strange Academy dark covers really take to finger prints. The finish isnt exactly gloss? Its like a matte finish? So it seems like taking of prints is even harder. Have you had any experience removing fingerprints from this type of book? Seems like the ink on the cover is very easy to come off as well. Also, definitely do NOT use absorbene on this cover.

@@RegieCollects Thanks! I was actually at the Dollar store today and picked up some Magic Erasers while there. I've cleaned about 20 books today and it works quite nicely, although I'm a little nervous with higher dollar books. I wanna try that putty stuff too. Have you heard of DampRid?
I almost cried when you burned that absolute carnage.. :( lol. Sheesh dude. Great video series. LOVE these.. very good tips I hadn't thought of.. both ..pressing and cleaning.. thank you!
I do not. People have said there are ways to remove water stains but I tend to avoid purchase books with water stains so I have zero experience. Sorry.
Cleaning water stains is possible but you are talking advanced cleaning techniques that fall more in the realm of restoration. I have only removed water stains from paperback books, not had the courage to try it on a comic yet. The key ingredient to removing them is distilled water. Some people use a 50% water/white vinegar solution but I am a little fearful of getting even mild acids near my comics and books.
Great Video, i should have thought of Magic Erasers, my wife loves them and uses them for everything but i never thought about using them to clean comics
I’ve burned the gloss in the price box in older comics because I’m trying so hard to get that dirt out of the box but it’s such a tight area to work in.
Yes indeed. I prefer a little magic eraser on the finger tip. Others have recommended the small erasers that fit on the top of a pencil. You’ll have to find something that works best for you.
That was a great video! Appreciate the effort you put into that bc I'm sure was not an easy one to pull together. Also kudos for having the stomach to damage that AC #1 lol. Showin out for the community 💪
Lol. That’s awesome. He’s a legend in the talking while doing game. Personally I was thinking about Jim Lee. He does an amazing job sketching and talking to the viewer. Love that dude.
Watching your video now broski's.. Where are your white soft erasers with the Absorene pads? Where is the Absorene putty? LOL micro fiber Ive never used those but they seem good and def proprietary.. Ill have to try that.. I use fragrance free make up remover cotton rounds..
I been waiting to clean press books but after this video I think I'm ready. I'm going to start with cleaning. Question, when cleaning a book is the cleaning focus on the white areas? Awesome video Regie you the man
I clean the entire book. You have to take care with the colored areas or you risk removing color. Dirt shows up mostly in the white areas so that’s why I focused there in the video.
Great video Regie never even thought of using a magic eraser I'm definitely going to try that on the next one I clean looks so much easier than using an eraser like I do
Hi Regie, I use Mr Clean erasers also, but I also love the Mr Clean thin eraser sheets. These work so well I almost want to use only them, still using both. Love your videos and am also a new subscriber. I have binged watched all your videos.
Regie, Thanks for making this video! I live in New Orleans and have been unable to find anyone local to clean my comics, and only one person who will press them. Will definitely try your techniques. Question: are you able to use the same techniques on a books interior, or are they limited to the cover? Thanks!
Was waiting to see this one, Regie. I've been cleaning and pressing for about 6 months now. Always enjoy any extra tips to pick up. I really enjoy the cleaning and pressing process. I have a ASM #300 in the press now. Which is my second copy that isn't signed.
Regie. Do you have idea how CGC cleans the comics they receive ? They must have special techniques. I know they are super backlogged so it must take a long time to clean a really dirty white back cover. I don't know if I have the patience to clean my comics. I will give it a try :)
During my hour plus long video they provided some insight but nothing nearly detailed to make actionable. Here is the video just in case: th-cam.com/video/7z79LgUE8K8/w-d-xo.html
Excellent and informative video. My wife also loves the magic Erasers. We have the 4x ones. I read in a comment here to better go with regular ones. I have a question: I got some comics from the 90’s, and they have some tanning on the cover. Specifically a Conan 275 that I cherish. The tanning is on the price box and the upc box. Do you have experience with tanning on covers? Do you recommend the magic Erasers on that ? Thanks for the great content! 🙏🏼
Thanks for watching the video bro. Nothing can help with tanning. Sorry. The good news is that tanning doesn’t hurt the books grade as much as foxing. 😀 Be well bro.
Regie Collects thanks a lot man! I appreciate. I thought there was nothing to do with tanning as it is a chemical process. It’s good to know that tanning brings down the grade less than foxing. Where can I find this kind of hierarchy on grade “hits”? My current and only source is the Overstreet grading guide”, and can’t find it online except for what’s already on that book
And here I thought this video was done awhile back and I just couldn't find it lol.. thanks man. I purchased absorbene and a few other drafting paper cleaning materials last month. And I must of subliminally known I needed magic erasers and bought the 20 pack Stik brand on Amazon really cheap. I used one for the dishes and didn't like it lol. Now I know what I need them for haha. Great vid as always bro!
I’m going to start cleaning and pressing my books. Something I’ve really been thinking about. Why pay someone when you can learn and do it yourself!? Do you have recommendations on a tee shirt press? Loving these videos! Funny thing is, my wife mentioned using a magic eraser on a book and I laughed.. Hard pill to swallow, showing her this video. She’s really full of herself right now..hahaha!!!
One of my favorite phases to use with my wife is “you could be right.” It makes that pill a lot easier to swallow when I realize she was correct. 😂🤪 Here is part 1 of the 4 part series that I did on pressing comics: th-cam.com/video/jpl3phd5Sqs/w-d-xo.html
New subscriber. Looking forward to learning more from your experiments with comics. Keep up the great work Reggie. Your comic related videos are second to none.
I have a question, so does that means that the old ink are way better than the current one? I’m still trying to find the perfect way to clean. For brown stains, can we use that magic brush? Btw what is that magic brush call? 😅
Hey bro! I just sent you a long message on IG with answers and links to your various questions. The 6 videos on cleaning and pressing will address a lot of things. The brush is a magic eraser.
I’m not exactly following this comment. The connect between the back board and cleaning isn’t connected for me. With that said, here is a newer cleaning video that may help you: th-cam.com/video/DZTYS2G3UJo/w-d-xo.html
wow magic eraser? never thought about that. it doesnt leave any micro scratches does it? great video. just added a few things to my shopping list for cleaning. thanks regie
Check out my recent CGC unboxing full of high grade books using this process. 😂🤪 Any cleaning process has the potential to damage books. It comes down to technique.
I would just go with the regular pads. I was at the store today and saw the 4x. I went with the normal ones and they seem to work fine. 4x may be too abrasive.
Great vid. I have tried a few bronze comics for pressing. Used the humidity chamber and when pressed, the covers are great. But noticed if comic is laid flat there is a slight curve or 2 and completely flat. What am i doing wrong? Thx
@@RegieCollects ok. kinda hard to explain. So if you lay the comic flat on a table and the spine is to the right and if you are at eye level with the comic toward the top, not the face of the comic but where the top and bottom cover sandwiches the pages, its not totally flat. Maybe better example if you hold the comic in the bag and board upright you can se the wave there also. It be easier to show a pic but don't think i can add it here
I love the magic erasers too.
Just found your channel a few days ago. I'm really liking it.. You are very upbeat and well spoken. Keep up the great work!
Welcome to the channel bud. Take a look around. Kick the tires. Let me know if you need anything.
LOVE these.. very good tips I hadn't thought of.. both ..pressing and cleaning.. thank you!
Do you have any tips for water stains? I'm excited to try this on some of my less important comics.
I always wondered how folks did it. Not sure that I’m brave enough for that. 😂 Solid comment bud.
Great Video, i should have thought of Magic Erasers, my wife loves them and uses them for everything but i never thought about using them to clean comics
Man, the wives are ahead of the curve on this one.
Yes they are the secret keepers of the knowledge of the magic eraser lol
Lol. My wife will have my kids shoes looking brand new. It’s amazing.
THANK YOU for this step by step instruction and it's the best on TH-cam! I Subscribed😁
You are welcome bud. There are several on cleaning and pressing. Good luck.
That was a great video! Appreciate the effort you put into that bc I'm sure was not an easy one to pull together. Also kudos for having the stomach to damage that AC #1 lol. Showin out for the community 💪
Sacrifices have to be made my friend. 🤪😂
So are you saying that bleach and a brillo pad is NOT a good idea? :)
Ok I watched and decided to clean my first comic. Which one??? Special Marvel Edition 15. It came out great so go big or go home!!
Lol. Congrats bro.
Regie, you were channeling Bob Ross! Felt like I was watching PBS on a Saturday.
Lol. That’s awesome. He’s a legend in the talking while doing game. Personally I was thinking about Jim Lee. He does an amazing job sketching and talking to the viewer. Love that dude.
Great video, but I have noobie question. Are you slightly wetting the eraser or is it dry?
Dry. With that said, here is a recent video that provides a lot more guidance: th-cam.com/video/DZTYS2G3UJo/w-d-xo.html
Amazing video! Thanks so much for sharing your technique. 🙏
Salute
@@RegieCollects thanks Regie for the advice
Slow and steady. Light pressure.
Not going to lie reggie this vid helped me out alot thanks ill share this in my group page
You are welcome. It’s a multi-part series.
I watched this video last year before I subbed to you, so here I am giving my 👍. You got some ASMR action going here 😂🤣. Cheers Regie!
Awesome video. Lots of great info that I'll be testing before my pressing. Thanks so much.
Great video Regie never even thought of using a magic eraser I'm definitely going to try that on the next one I clean looks so much easier than using an eraser like I do
Super-duper. Great detailed video!
Great video Regie these are going to help me when I buy a press thank you sir!
👊🏾
Thanks man now I can clean my books before sending them to get graded 🤟🏻
Hi Regie, I use Mr Clean erasers also, but I also love the Mr Clean thin eraser sheets. These work so well I almost want to use only them, still using both. Love your videos and am also a new subscriber. I have binged watched all your videos.
Welcome to the channel brother and thank you for contributing to the discussion.
Thanks Reggie I never realized I could clean my comics
You are welcome.
Great video mate. Super informative!
Great video. I'm about to start attempting cleaning of some books I got so this helps a lot.
You are welcome.
Regie,
Thanks for making this video! I live in New Orleans and have been unable to find anyone local to clean my comics, and only one person who will press them. Will definitely try your techniques. Question: are you able to use the same techniques on a books interior, or are they limited to the cover? Thanks!
Glad that you found the video helpful. I have to think about that. I have never had a need to clean the inside pages of a book.
Didn’t work too well for me. Didn’t get the spot I needed cleaned. It did ruin some of the cover tho. Highly regret doing it.
Was waiting to see this one, Regie. I've been cleaning and pressing for about 6 months now. Always enjoy any extra tips to pick up. I really enjoy the cleaning and pressing process. I have a ASM #300 in the press now. Which is my second copy that isn't signed.
Boom! Hope that sucker comes out perfect! 👊🏾👊🏾
Ahhh, ASM #100 ...
I waited more than 2 months for this comic to arrive.
But it was worth it !🕷😄
Excellent and informative video.
Here is a video on directly grading: th-cam.com/video/ZM1I0aoZ1bk/w-d-xo.html
Here is a video on comic defects: th-cam.com/video/wrmfFSLxHpQ/w-d-xo.html
Here is an interview with the head grader at CGC on pressible defects: th-cam.com/video/7z79LgUE8K8/w-d-xo.html
Really cool man awesome job I'd really like to see you take a sticker off a comic that would be pretty cool
Nope. Lol. This is a brand new video. Hopefully it helps bud. I’ve heard about absorbene from other guys but I’ve never tried it.
Yeah i was think trying Me Clean Magice eraser lol now i know it work im going try it ty Regie
Good luck bro.
Here is part 1 of the 4 part series that I did on pressing comics: th-cam.com/video/jpl3phd5Sqs/w-d-xo.html
New subscriber. Looking forward to learning more from your experiments with comics. Keep up the great work Reggie. Your comic related videos are second to none.
Welcome bro. I appreciate you watching and commenting. Take a look around and let me know if you have any questions. Happy to help.
Hi Regie have you noticed any colour rub from cleaning on a backing board? I use the same method and on dark colours it’s lifting a bit 😟
I’m not exactly following this comment. The connect between the back board and cleaning isn’t connected for me.
With that said, here is a newer cleaning video that may help you: th-cam.com/video/DZTYS2G3UJo/w-d-xo.html
Thank you Regie very helpful. Who knew a magic eraser, pretty cool.
🤷🏾♂️ Who knew indeed. The idea hit me and it worked so I ran with it.
I look forward to trying it out I'm going to go watch your pressing vids as well.
👊🏾
Impressive, thank you.
wow magic eraser? never thought about that. it doesnt leave any micro scratches does it? great video. just added a few things to my shopping list for cleaning. thanks regie
Check out my recent CGC unboxing full of high grade books using this process. 😂🤪 Any cleaning process has the potential to damage books. It comes down to technique.
Thanks for another great video. I've been waiting for this one.
I got you bro. 👊🏾
Great Video Reggie!... but man that hurt to watch you clean those then rub the ink. Ouch, my OCD hurts.
Great Video! We just added your video on our page , #1 Keyword " How to Dry Clean Comic Books " on Comic Years
Thanks so much for this! Brilliant!
Just what I needed!
What method would you recommend for a foil cover comic?
Same method.
For the cleaning pads I see they sell the 2X and the 4X mr clean pads. Which is better for the comic?
I would just go with the regular pads. I was at the store today and saw the 4x. I went with the normal ones and they seem to work fine. 4x may be too abrasive.
This is a useful video, what drips gave it a dislike? Regie, how do you keep from wrinkling the cover?!
There is a reason I put off recording this video. I already know what is going to happen. Just watch it.
What wrinkles are you referring too?
@@RegieCollects How do you avoid *adding* wrinkles while wiping the comic?
I’m not rubbing hard enough to wrinkle the paper.
Where do I find the beige one. The „aggressiver“ eraser. Could someone please send me an Amazon link
There is no Amazon link, sorry.
Can you please share what comic press you use? Thank you.
It’s a 5-6 part series. Here is video one: th-cam.com/video/jpl3phd5Sqs/w-d-xo.html
Great vid. I have tried a few bronze comics for pressing. Used the humidity chamber and when pressed, the covers are great. But noticed if comic is laid flat there is a slight curve or 2 and completely flat. What am i doing wrong? Thx
Thanks. I not sure what you are asking. Are the comics slightly curved or completely flat?
@@RegieCollects ok. kinda hard to explain. So if you lay the comic flat on a table and the spine is to the right and if you are at eye level with the comic toward the top, not the face of the comic but where the top and bottom cover sandwiches the pages, its not totally flat. Maybe better example if you hold the comic in the bag and board upright you can se the wave there also. It be easier to show a pic but don't think i can add it here
Reg.. I have a Thor 144 that is Tide lined damaged from using polar springs bottled water.. I did it just for you lol
