  • I believe the The Fenix TK16 v2 is the best tactical flashlight you can buy right now. The Fenix TK16 has a unique mix of qualities which makes it suitable for general use as well as EDC or Everyday Carry for security and law enforcement agencies. This video compares the unique features of this tactical flashlight (or torch if you are in the UK)
My name is Jonathan, I have a passion for all things 'gadget, travel and EDC' which has filled both my personal and work life for many years. This includes sourcing, reviewing and product development and the creation of two UK national retail chains. Find out more here: • About Jon Gadget - Who...
This channel is here to help you find great travel and carry gear on the back of solid and detailed reviews along with years of experience. I also hope to give you ideas and inspiration when it comes to everyday carry gear, travel gear and gadgets, which make life a little bit easier and perhaps more fun.
I welcome any feedback on my videos or the channel in general. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

    Product Sourcing:
When it comes to sourcing a product for review, I will usually either purchase an item personally or reach out to a supplier requesting a sample for review. Most suppliers, after seeing the channel, are supportive if they are confident in their product, appreciating the value of greater exposure.
I am sometimes asked to review a product by a supplier which I will only agree to if the product fits the channel and I believe will be of interest to you, my audience. Also the product needs to be worthy of a review. It is not in my interest to review inferior or poor quality products and therefore as you might expect many requests are politely declined.
Any sponsored videos (paid for reviews) are clearly stated as such so there can be no misunderstanding. Even with sponsored reviews I will only agree to a sponsorship on products and services which I believe will be of genuine interest to viewers.
I will always make reference in the video to products which have been provided for review by a supplier and I always make it clear to the supplier that they cannot influence or be involved in the review in any way if they choose to supply a product.
Sometimes a supplier will provide a link to the product or the supplier which I am happy to include in the description. Sometimes I will be provided with an affiliate link so I can earn a commission on sales and this helps to support channel costs but never at the expense of an honest review.
If a product I have reviewed is available from Amazon I will often include an Amazon link in the description. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. If you purchase a product or service with the links that I provide I may receive a small commission. There is no additional charge to you.
    Comments:
I really appreciate the feedback in the comments - I find it a source of knowledge and inspiration - so thank you to all of you who take the time to contribute. I have recently found that if I continue to respond to all the comments as the number of videos builds, it takes time away from being able to produce new content which would be very counter productive! - so my aim is to read everything I can and reply when I can, after each video goes live, until the next video goes live a week later. I'll see how that works out 😊
Thank you for supporting the channel so I can continue to provide you with regular reviews, thoughts and ideas and (hopefully) inspiration! Seriously reviewed and very nicely produced and presented overview of the Fenix flashlight. No nonsenses approach absent of any gimmicky exaggeration and unnecessary overreacting and camera movements that make me dizzy watching so many other reviews on TH-cam.
Very authoritative, perfectly informed and superbly knowledgeable gentleman who's review are not only trustworthy but very enjoyable to watch like some kind of educational entertainments. All in all, it's very interesting, helpful, funny to watch and relaxing at the same time.
In any case, one of the very best reviewers on the internet, particularly for us outdoors enthusiasts. Thank you, my utmost respect and keep up good work. My very best wishes.

Once again, your review has guided a purchase decision. Based on your excellent comparison and discussion of the pros and cons and my evaluation based there on, I purchased a Nitecore P10iX. A couple features the P10iX does have that you mentioned were missing on the Fenx tipped the scale. I really appreciate that you review excellent products and briefly, and succinctly, compare similar products. I do find for general use that flood lighting at near distance is more useful than spot lighting at greater distance. I should mention that I’ve owned and used numerous tactical flashlights over the last 30 years, mostly Surefire. But now I need a good general purpose house, shop, camping, walking the dog light rather than a purely tactical tool. Your review makes an excellent case for the Fenix and similar products.

THIS is what I call an ACTUAL review, thank you so much for such a detailed review. I am considering buying this flashlight or the Powertac E9R-G4 for self defence purposes.

    • @JonGadget

Thanks for the feedback - much appreciated. I've not tried the Powertac but I'm still using the Fenix 👍

    • @GeorgesonOfficial
      @GeorgesonOfficial 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

@@JonGadget I ended up going with the Powertac since it is more compact, easier to conceal in my pockets, and has more grippy textures, but if I didn't care about the size, Fenix is 100% a better option because of the higher lumens (2550 vs 3100) , the battery being completely inside with the USB C and more waterproofing, the metal studs for breaking glass. I will see how much I like the Powertac, and maybe I might also buy Fenix later on!

Purchased with spare battery. An all round compact light. I have lights with longer throws, tiny bodies and brighter turbo output. Many do have a moonlight setting but this is a real go to "torch" :) I am a big fan of Olight normally. BUT Wow, how far have we come from the plastic 1970's Eveready I got as a little boy for sneaking around with? I was delighted with that back then.
I also appreciate the ease of use, having rotated torches blindly in the dark just to turn them on. The construction, single led and removable battery are also 'advanced' over others. Of course this is subjective but there is nothing worse than having a torch with more hard to access modes in an emergency. Especially when you are over 50!! Excellent review, really excellent. Thank you for a very honest and analytical approach. It is great to have such passion and audience awareness in your reviews. Thank you.

Thank you Jon! I very much like how you take the time to explain I can easily understand. I purchased before watching and will receive the TK16 -2 next week. I also ordered the filter lenses. Yes it is to bad they couldn't make a decent "pouch", rather disappointing but Fenix does have other nylon belt "pouches" which are much more durable.

I carry this flashlight in my 5.11 pants when I'm on duty as a firefighter, it's much brighter than the hand lights the department has on the trucks! I wish that Fenix would make a coat light similar to the Streamlight Survivor but much brighter. All of us carry the Survivor on our turnout gear but its getting pretty dated. I love this light!

I have a Fenix UC35 V2 and it is my favorite next to my MT14 from Led Lenser the Fenix has a moonlight mode with 1 lumen brightness which is perfect for the middle of the night when you have to go to the loo whilst camping or even at home or searching something in otherwise complete darkness , the flashlight is also very well made it feels solid and never failed in the slightest, the battery connection is absolutely strong so it never thinks about flickering or anything like that, the only thing I would want to have on it is being able to switch from spot to floodlight like with the MT14 otherwise I’d buy Fenix again 😊

Excellent review! I just subscribed due to your thorough and engaging style.
I agree that a moonlight mode would be very valuable on a light this powerful. It would indeed last for a very long time. However I think with the moonlight mode many would also want the light to tail stand. As we cannot have everything I think if it could tail stand that might detract from the tactical switches on the tail. I’m not sure if there’s a way to make both features work?
    Very tempting light!
Just curious if you’ve ever owned a Fenix E15? Out of production but such a little powerhouse! I think you’d appreciate it.

I switched my EDC lights from Fenix to Oligh… there’s nothing between them in terms of performance but Olight has a far superior user interface with the ability to go from off, directly to moonlight, turbo, strobe, or somewhere in between. I also like the Olight magnetic charger, despite the proprietary batteries, they’re weather proof and very handy for charging in a vehicle.

I tend to alternate between the two. The Olight Warrior 3 is superior to the TK16 in many ways-- like you mentioned, it has a better interface, instant battery indicator, a moonlight mode, and the clip is better. But I do prefer the wider beam profile and dual tailcap buttons of the TK16.

Let me say this, I'm a kydex holster maker and own a bunch of high-end flashlights as I Use them to get measurements to make the molds and use the flashlights to do a final tuning on the holsters.
While, Olight, Fenix, Thrunite, Klarus and Nitecore came a long way and the first companies to adopt the 18650 and 21700 batteries. For one they tend advertise a a bit more lumens than what the flashlights really have, other thing I noticed their anodized finished is not as good as the big dogs.
If I had to choose I'll stick with Surefire, Pelican and Streamlight.

One big downside on the Olight UI is that if you run them on a lower mode and than use the turbo or strobe over the tail button its only momentary and turns of totally if you release it. The TK16 goes back to your last light mode after using the direct strobe button. But the best UI has the Nextorch TA30 tactical and their variants!

you talked me into picking this up. I get the one-dollar torches all the time that use up AAA batteries and I kinda got tired of some of them breaking and causing me pain. I have a magnetic rechargeable torch that uses either face or bendable tip light, but it's made of plastic and would not bode me well due to its large size and brittle look. this torch looks like it would be a perfect EDC light to bring with me wherever I go. I was looking into the Olight Warrior 3 but the lack of beads to break glass in an "oh shit" moment didn't really click well with me. the price point for it too also didn't really click well but I also think I'm paying for the ability to magnetically charge which is cool, but not practical in my eyes. pretty excited to say the least to get this beast and have it near forever! if i could, id take off the clip and put it to the other side, just so i can clip it to the bill of my cap and double that as a headlamp too!

The tk16 is an amazing flashlight I use it daily I have found only one issue with it and it's not really a big deal but I thought it was breaking it kept turning off or blinking and it was that the head was just a millimeter unscrewed and when that happens it loses connectivity so if you have problems with your Fenix tk16 check to make sure that the head is screwed all the way on and tight before calling them or sending it back

A lot of people confuse the purposes of a tactical flashlight and a utility flashlight. The most important thing a tactical flashlight must do is illuminate and possibly blind a target. IMO, a tactical flashlight should really only have one mode, and should have a lock-on/lock-off function to prevent both accidental activation and accidental deactivation if dropped. A utility flashlight should only ever turn on in its lowest brightness mode to preserve night vision as much as possible and to preserve battery life.
I think the TK11 is actually a better choice for most civilian users, and probably also a better choice for many LE or Military uses. The TK16 does have the advantage of the larger 21700 battery compared to the TK11’s 18650, but the TK11 has the CR123A option, as well. Rechargeable batteries are preferable for professional constant use, but for the civilian user, who is more likely to truly need a tactical light rarely to never, primary cells are preferable, because they do not self-discharge the way rechargeables will, with no dangers involved in keeping batteries continually plugged into chargers.
Additionally, the operating modes of the TK11 are IMO superior, because it has a switchable Tactical Mode in which only the High and Strobe modes can be selected. The TK16, by contrast, lacks this switchable Tactical Mode, and instead opts for a more confusing two-button interface that almost guarantees errors in high stress life-critical encounters. There’s a reason that most firearms don’t have two different triggers.
The TK16 also lacks a lock-off mode, which the TK11 has. Maximum brightness is not the most important feature of a tactical flashlight, and if you look at the runtime chart provided by Fenix for these two models, you will see that in reality, in sustained usage, the TK16 is actually not much brighter than the TK11 over the approximate 2h runtime in their High modes.
Lastly, a low power mode shouldn’t be on a tactical flashlight, at all. It’s a much better idea to carry a separate utility light for that, because you always want to be certain your tactical light has 100% battery capacity for when you need it. At least the TK11 can be left in Tactical Mode, the TK16 cannot.

    • @JonGadget
      @JonGadget  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Thanks for the very detailed and informative feedback Gemma. I still though prefer the TK16 - my reasons are tungsten steel strike bezel, brighter output, stronger beam, better battery life, 1000 lm vs 750 lm after drop down. I also think the TK16 interface is easier to operate instinctively (can't select wrong mode by accident). Something I didn't mention in the video - Un-twisting the tail cap on the TK16 by quarter of a turn acts as effective lock-out! It's good to have the choice though 👍

    Hi Jonathan,
I very nearly went for the Fenix TK16 v2 based on your excellent vid'. But, before making a final decision, I checked the reviews on Amazon and elsewhere from people who've bought the torch and was put off by the numbers commenting on how (dangerously) hot the head gets in the higher lumen ranges. Instead, I'm thinking of getting the Nitecore P20iX - which is similarly priced. If you plan on reviewing this flashlight or, better still, doing a head to head with the TK16 v2, I'll delay my purchase! Thoughts? ;-)
