Its a deep rabbit hole man, only recently after a year have i finally seen how it applies. I would check out scots bass lessons and just memorize the modes and different chord shapes, take your time on them, like 40 bpm each, run them back words, arpegiate them all, mix up the arpegio, make sure you know what note you are hitting. After you eternalize it like a robot, then when someone explains how chords work or go together you don't even to think of how that works mechanically, because you are a bass bot with the minor pattern forever in your skull. Most people don’t know that John Paul Jones biggest influence was Motown Bass. If you listen to a lot of the bass lines alone it’s like listening funk/R and B. He wasn’t a ‘rock’ bassist. For that reason Zep had a driving low end.

SO may comments about his use of a pick! It is the first time I've seen him use one, so there must be a specific reason for it - not that there's anything wrong with it in the first place! (if the purist in you despises the pick on principle, you need to adjust that principle, quickly) But there is a practical reason in this case - if I may be so bold. The fast note playing in that part we all came here for is articulated more clearly with the sharp attacking pick than with fleshy fingertips.
i just go for the way it's originally played. I think i could articulate the phrase with fingers but the attack and tone wouldn't be the same, you are right
Dead in the air by Otherwise. It’s a band that noone I’ve talked to have heard of. The base is pretty easy I think, but I’d love to see the tabs, since I can’t find them anywhere
But is it because the song calls for it? It is the first of his videos I've seen in which he uses a pick. Surely he can play this as well finger-style, But I would think he uses the pick here because it has a much sharper attack and thus makes clearer those fast runs in the "chorus."
I was just listening to the guitar backing track and I heard the chorus (I think?) and all I thought was "Holy shit that's the bass?" and now here I am

John Paul Jones was the beset musician in Led Zeppelin
