Fun fact. It wasn’t just Task Force Bruiser. We had SOF guys in an out of my AO on deployments. The only ones that never told us they were kicking around in our backyard was SEAL teams. I can count on more than one occasion of near blue on blue incidents because of it. I don’t care how super elite operator you are, A Brad crew can see you in the dark.

I still see the SEALs as top-tier but I've said before that the Polish Grom and JTF2 are more like what the SEALs USED to be, in the sense of when you didn't know very much about them( JTF2 is so secretive that there are JTF2 operators who have said that they didn't even know something like JTF2 existed until right up when they joined up) and when they weren't actively courting the spotlight, fame, media exposure and attention( I can't even really say that about the SAS and SBS because they still have some guys that have podcasts, write books and do a lot of interviews). I also think that social media and the internet have played a big part in it, too. I do think that if Jocko( who I still like and I enjoy watching his podcast and reading his books) and some of the other guys from Task Unit Bruiser and the SEAL Teams were the silent professional, he( and some other SEALs, too) wouldn't be having some of these kinds of problems.

Clouding the issue in the second half of this video when talking about how all ops had to be approved. Having approval for an op doesn’t signify what actually takes place on the op. It doesn’t implicitly explain away who is left dead on the floor of a target site, or why, when everyone withdraws. As a Marine sniper I will testify that there are so, so many times when NO ONE can see what a sniper can see through his optic, meaning that the person in the window 600m away can’t be seen by anyone but me. So, if I were to pull the trigger and call a hit, no one knows the status of the endexed target but me. It’s very easy to do things no one will know about in so many situations, even when you have other troops supporting your mission.
He keeps talking about people “in the know”. Yes, Jocko. A lot of us are in “the know” and not in the way you describe. We actually do know and we know how easy it was to do things that simply stayed in-house. You know it and so do we. For everything that someone happened to see indicators of things you guys are accused of, there is the iceberg of what isn’t seen. Facts, and true for any unit.

A small entity of SEAL leadership tried to completely distort and manipulate the truth on what happened in all these instances and it has deeply damaged the reputation of NSW. Now do I think Jocko is relevant to those events? No, and nor is he obligated to speak on them. Jocko can only speak to where he was in the specific time frame of the GWOT and the people he commanded in Iraq. A lot of people are trying to put all the NSW BS that has transpired over 20 years and putting it at the feet of Jocko because of his success as a public figure and his platform.
The only thing for me that I’m really not sure about is Chris Kyle. That dude flat out “bragged” about punching Jessie Ventura in the face and sniping looters from a sports stadium during the Katrina disaster. Among other things, that Antihero podcast and Green Beret Chronicles was not the 1st time Kyle has been accused of lying, exaggerating, beating his wife and killing unarmed civilians. IMO, Jocko absolutely is obligated to talk about him and the allegations. Jocko was not only in charge of Chris Kyle in TF Bruiser, but a lot of Jockos original fame came from that past relationship and the success of American Sniper. In that separate case, I would like to get some context from Jocko.

Jocko literally didn't answer anything here. He doesn't understand what "Extreme Ownership" means. I served alongside SEALs and others in various capacities and it was well-known back in the early 2000s that they were running and gunning and we had a hell of a time coordinating and debriefing with them on anything. This extends back to the incident with the Rangers and Pat Tillman.
Any Muppet in a closet can form strong opinions about the SEALs simply from reading about many of their more well-known and infamous operations.
What I don't like about his response here:
    1. He is using the defense of "everything was documented"
    2. The defense of "we had strict ROE"
    3. The defense of "we communicated everything"
    4. The defense of "it was chaos"
    5. The defense of "we had to have x, y, z approvals"
    6. The defense of "we had guys getting injured"
    7. The defense of "my fallen brothers would not want me to squander this gift"
I try to play the fence on these things but he is not addressing the accusations head-on/directly. He is indirectly circling around the accusations gathering up what indirect and supportive evidence he can which is fine, but still doesn't provide direct evidence to null/void the accusations against him.

This is long, but I feel it needs to be said. I was actually in Iraq from April 06 to April 07 as a part of a USACAPOC unit responsible among other things, for COIN in Ramadi at the time. The task unit did have friction with 38 and with the CAT-A assigned to that AO. I have to admit that. The SEALs were looked at by some as a bit cavalier, not always team players, cowboyish. But war crimes? No. No way. Never heard a word uttered about that. And…I would have. I’m sure. There were definitely some skepticism on why they were running so many broad daylight missions. Particularly after Lee and Mansour were killed. Definitely some Monday morning QBing after those events. But war crimes? Hell no. And war crimes suspicions were always shared spontaneously through the ranks. So again, I would have heard about it. Particularly when again, I was reporting to a cell at MND-B who at the time was the division supporting civil military operations for that part of MNF-W. I regularly was in meetings with division general officers and often when topics like reported illegal action was brought up. Never heard a peep about this.
Now, was Kyle a liar about some of his exploits…unequivocally yes. And that went beyond Ramadi OIF 06-07. But I never once heard of war crimes in relation to him.
I agree this letter does not make sense as it is true investigations would have been oppressively present and the TU would have been stood down. That was not happening. I can tell you first hand.
Remember, TU Bruiser was a vanilla unit. They were operating with the full knowledge, and oversight of the battle space command. They aren’t a unit like CAG or The Command or even the Activity reporting to the executive branch directly. So to say they were somehow protected from above, just doesn’t make any sense. If anything, NCIS was on speed dial by 38s CO. Vanilla units are in the spotlight, not operating in obscurity.
Do I believe there is more to the story to how Kyle later died, absolutely. But I find it highly unlikely it was due to his previous knowledge and exploits in Ramadi half a decade previously.
I am not here to simp for anyone. I actually have some problems philosophically with the marketing of special operations and certain personalities that are without a doubt enriching themselves by embellishing their military prowess or worse, outright lying about where they were and what they did. I know for a fact these scumbags exist. I have no evidence or first or even second hand knowledge pointing to Jocko being of that ilk. And if you want me to name names of who I’m talking about, I am not afraid of doing so.
One final thought. Remember, certain things Jockos recent accusers are 💯 true in relation to several of those bad actors I’m describing. Red Wings and Luttrell’s true conduct vs the Lone Survivor account, Slab and Szymanski and Roberts Ridge screwing of Chapman detailed by people like Matt Cubbler do pass the smell test and more. Their comments in regards to TU Bruiser, do not. Just because Matt is likely right about some shit shows, does not mean he’s right about this.

The one thing I can confirm is the seals reluctance to communicate with the conventional forces in the area to deconflict the battle-space. The seals in sadr city were definitely some pre madonnas and it almost cost them their life at the end of a 25mm Bradley chain gun. Then they demanded we escorted them out of the area because we “compromised their hide site”. After they intentionally gave us the wrong grid coordinates after many many requests for it. But I don’t want to paint all seals with a brush because of one unit on one long night in a crazy environment.

For the ill-informed, no, this isn’t my real name. I have a family and don’t want to be messed with. When men face life in prison, they will silence anyone by any means. However, I am a real former SEAL.
I was with SEAL Team Two from 2004 to 2011, in the Navy from 2002 to 2013, with three tours to Iraq, South America, Africa, and Afghanistan. There’s always been a rift between the East and West Coast, so take this with a grain of salt. At Team Two, we all thought Jocko Willink wasn’t doing a good job. So much so that we didn’t use any of their tactics, which is a fact. Was it in direct response to Jocko? Not sure, as I was only an E-5 when tactics changed. We operated only at night and made sure not to stand out with patches and such. In response to Michael Monsoor, I presume, we began to dog-ear our grenades with rubber bands and wear them in pouches instead of draping them on the pin and spoon. We also put tape on the pin and double wrapped it. One drunken night, I heard that Monsoor had pulled his own pin by accident because it got caught on something. That part is just hearsay. But the fact is, after Monsoor died, we changed TTPs on grenades. Why? Not sure. Bottom line is, on the East Coast, TRADET was teaching none of the tactics deployed by Jocko. We got up at 4 PM not 4 AM on deployments to conduct nighttime OPs. I know several SEALs, including Mike Day, who didn’t like Jocko.
Now, as far as murder being involved, I wasn’t there. But I can say the enemy doesn’t wear uniforms, so identifying enemies is tough. And just because they don’t have guns doesn’t mean they are allies. At that time, cell phones, kids' toys, walkie-talkies, etc., were being used to detonate bombs. This included women, children, and men of all ages. So, on that front, that’s a hard case to prove some 20 years later.
Now, as far as Jocko being some great leader, I’ve seen no proof of any great leadership in the military, period, as the war in the Middle East has been lost, and we are on the brink of WW3, and we have more laws in America than before 9/11.
Here’s how the award system works in the military: Only screw-ups get high awards. If a group of SEALs does a mission with no shots fired and arrests the guy and gets him convicted in court, you get some low-level award. If you do daytime ops, use explosive breaching, alert everyone, Americans get shot and killed, and you survive, you get the highest awards. That’s a fact. The military awards failure.
So did Jocko use terrible tactics? Yes. Is that a crime? I don’t believe so. Did he kill civilians? Hard to say. Is a he great leader? We lost the war and guys got killed on his deployment. No one was using his tactics as of 2013.
Now, the martial arts thing. I can’t say if he was making money on the deal but a forensic accountant could figure that out quickly. But the Deter System was not widely loved. We all wanted some MMA-type training but due to contracts with Duane Deter it was difficult.

Yes. In the interview, he even says daytime operations weren’t a good idea. Mike only did the podcast to help promote his book. He told me personally that Jocko was an idiot and that he believed Chris Kyle was a murderer. But again, East Coast SEALs always poked fun at West Coast SEALs. The fact is, we no longer conduct operations like Jocko did. Jocko was using old tactics from the Vietnam era, so it’s not like Jocko had a lot to go on. Based on my career, it’s completely plausible it was all covered up. I saw all sorts of questionable things happen. My own act of valor was based upon bullshit in Iraq. I’ve seen people with broomsticks get shot by up to 16 rangers. The divide between good and evil in combat is blurry. Anyone who takes a side knows fuck all about the very nature of morality.

I was a new HM in Afghanistan (My first deployment, 1st of 3 tours there) during this time in Ramadi. I was hyped and excited for my first tour but I will never forget after we landed there was a ramp ceremony immediately after. I could see the toll it had on those soldiers faces. In that moment I knew this was for real. I quickly realized this was not a game.
ISAF/RC South had very specific ROEs. They were the same in 06’ & 08’ and didn’t change until Summer of 09’ (McChrystal) but I want to say that the Frogmen/EOD dudes had slightly different ROEs but it was not that vast.
One thing I have come to think about GWOT is I’m glad for everyone that made it back home and as for the bad guys > Fk’em
