SRAM Guide R brakes sticking in hot weather? How-to find the Serial# for sticking lever replacement!

  • I had an issue with my 2018 SRAM Guide R brakes where on a 40*c Australian day the brakes would fade, with the lever slowly returning. Unfortunately this did not resolve with a brake bleed.
In discussion with my local bike shop this is a known issue with this model year of the brakes- so here is a video on how to find the serial number to see if your brakes are affected too!
I couldn't be happier that SRAM has addressed this issue with replacement brake units, however if you can't get it replaced, there appear to be a range of potential fixes discussed online; ranging from new internal kits (www.rotorburn.... or www.pinkbike.c...) to filing the piston! ( • Video )
Hopefully these links give you some fixes to consider in order to get you back on the trails- even in super hot weather!

Omg, this is happening to me right now. I have a trek remedy also! It's the 3rd time and now I'm stuck out riding with stuck brakes. Thanks for the video.

No worries- I thought it was just effecting me, so when I couldn't fix it with brake bleeds I was so glad to find more information about the issue online. Glad I could help.

The master cylinder piston is plastic it expands faster than the alloy body and sticks causing slow return. Sram will just give you a new plastic piston that solves nothing. Alloy and titanium pistons can be found on ebay that work properly and are easy to fit

Had to replace mine on my MTB with a Shimano alternative. And just had the same issue on my road bike. 😡

Its even happening for my Guide Ultimates from a 2016 Giant. I bought the Giant seconhand, but my LBS says the recall covers the brakes. I just need to send them the serial number, so thanks!

ofcourse warranty is always good but the point is why need to wait something bad to happen with the breaks, why not replace it with better break set or it will still damage "AGAIN" the breaks when exposed to heat....

Thanks for watching Jun Arellano- you raise some really good points. I wasn't aware of the issue when I bought them unfortunately, so I was very grateful when I worked out that others were having the same issue in hot weather and there was a fix!

Why call it Shram when the name is Sram. Just like Tram.

SRAM sucks. Switch to TRP or Shimano/Saint which use mineral oil.
