2014 was the year that caused me to cut ties with Subaru. My Forster fleet had so many issues and my Subaru dealer fought me on repairs. One vehicle would fail with a cvt issue (valve body) and then another Forester would have another issue. I couldn’t keep the fleet running without issues.
As of 2023 I’m giving Subaru another shot with a Outback XT. Fingers crossed. The 2023 feels so much more solid than I remember the 2014 Forester feeling. I really hope Subaru has gotten their fit and finish together.
@@ernestocortezcorrea mine were part of a business fleet and had less than 36k miles when they began failing. I was told that the damage was result of abuse. The problem was that I only used them in the manner that’s portrayed on tv. Light off roading, fire roads, snow, shallow streams etc. I owned a river rafting and wilderness company back then.
I bought a 22 Legacy and absolutely hate it. This will be my last Subaru for sure!

$2k for an Oem cat on a 10 year old car with 200k+ miles. Wing ding an aftermarket $500 Walker cat on it and cross your fingers.
Just bought a 2014 Forester Limited w/Leather, Sunroof & PRG with 145k miles, 1 owner, clean title for $3,800
Had a replacement CVT replaced under warranty at 97k. Only issue was the upper oil pan coolant o-rings allowing oil into the cooling system. Removed and resealed the engine myself, now have $4,500 into the car and everything works as it should!😁
14-20 WRX seats are direct bolt in up front and minimal mod in the back. Totally worth it if you can find them for a good price.

91111SG000 is not painted. Also, you’ll need the protective strips for the rear garnish. They are adhesive and can’t really be transfered from the old to the new part. Part numbers are 91713SG010 (x2) and 91713SG040 (x2).

@@MrSubaru1387 If you have the time: Manual transmission 2018 2.5i base model. I drained and filled the gearbox with 2.8L of 75W90 gear oil. Does this car NOT have a separate front differential? Is 2.8L the correct capacity? The dipstick is reading as full with 2.8L. Everything I see online suggests the gearbox should take 3.4/3.5/3.7L. Thanks.

@@MrSubaru1387 Thank you for your time. Is 2.8L the correct capacity? Seems pretty small.... I have a small smell of, what I now know to be, 75W90 oil. My dad says the oil doesn't evaporate, so the small amounts I leaked from a fill hose will propbably remind me of my DIY job for a few weeks until it burns off. 😜👍

Really excited to see some Forester content! Just wish it was a manual to see a clutch replacement, or the best way to bleed the clutch. (When I bled my clutch when I got mine, it took me forever to get the pressure back into the clutch once I bled it)

I have a 2015 Forester Premium which I love despite my EyeSight camera failing last year. Only 85,000 miles so I’m expecting many, many more miles to come with your guidance!

My '14 base model with 6 speed manual just turned 235k miles and it just keeps on ticking. No cat issues, but we did have engine short block replaced at 98k under warranty, due to excessive oil consumption. So far, it feels like it will make it to 300k, easily!
Looking into a used manual Forester myself, any advice? Also difference between the 5MT vs 6MT?
I have a 2014 Forester with 203k miles on it running great so far. Had it since 37k miles. Haven’t had to do too much with it. Had a transmission issue also around 150/160k that ended up just being a sensor replacement. So happy I’ll have you and these videos for a reference in case anything happens.

I have just bought a 2010 S3 Forester Premium with the 2lt T Diesel motor and 6 speed manual over hear in Oz, with 350kkm on it, so really glad I found your channel. It's a 1 one owner, full dealer history car, so hoping it's a good first Subaru for us. Having to replace the radiator as its leaking, but hopefully that will be it.....time will tell.

As a macro (big picture) perspective I love this idea of getting a used car, going through it, assessing cost, and fixing it yourself.

Definitely glad to see you get an SJ generation Forester to work through. I have a 2016 Forester XT Touring, and have been doing maintenance on it myself. I know, different engine, different interior, but it has some of the same issues, so I'm looking forward to your videos on this one!
They are definitely commanding a high price, just about anywhere. That SJ once done would fetch 12k up here in NY easily.
Also, check the front control arms on either side. Even if they look okay, they are a common issue on this generation. If they are even a bit worn out, a video on replacing those would really benefit a lot of people with these cars, so they can see how it's done.

Great stuff as always. I'm eager to dive into the content on this Forrester. Gotta say, man, I don't get the hate with the oil plan drain valve. It makes oil changes a breeze and there's no mess.
I love my fumoto valves, too. I am not sure the hate either, only thing I can think of, is the not having a magnet for forbidden glitter. I collect my used oil and inspect it for such things. It's not just for ease of changes, it's to save on the oil pan thread life, and keep from having to hunt down crush washers.
This is almost identical to my 2014 Forester. I’m kinda stoked to follow the progress. I “had” to replace my CVT as well, was not aware that something else could have been the problem (although my mechanic who I trust pretty well didn’t seem thrilled about having to do the work - found an old new one rather than a used one, so yeah… it was the most I’ve ever dropped on a vehicle repair. Naturally it failed just after the warranty ran out. Now it’s throwing catalytic converter codes, allegedly - and something is up causing the cruise control not to work (I suspect vacuum stuff?) and intermittently says the dynamics control needs to be checked. When in that condition it gets poor mileage.
I would like to keep the vehicle, since the market is still pretty terrible for pricing - and having spent the $$$ on the CVT… am learning from you quite a lot but don’t have a ton of mechanic experience nor proper tools for anything but really basic stuff (I did replace the turn signal stalk myself, LOL)
If you’re seeing catalytic converter codes, that will disable cruise control. It’s probably intermittent(?), like, only when the Check Engine light comes on? At least this is the case with mine…
Cat codes like 420 , if you have an exhaust leak , fix it first.
My outback has a broken abs sensor so I have the anti skid light on, parking brake flashes and ABS light on. Cruise control will not function with out without CEL as it comes on and off as it feels like it. I love my Subaru this way though as I can drift it all winter long without a computer locking my wheels and making the car another boring steel box to drive. Its just a 2.5 NA EJ253 engine with 6speed transmission but I have such a blast and cheap to keep going.
How many miles were on it when the CVT needed replacement? I ask because Subaru extended the warranty on teh CVT's to 10 years, 100k....
@@willconklin7739 mine was at 113K if I recall correctly and failed in September of 2022 - bought it in April of 2013. There was no “ten years or” part to the warranty. Just 100K miles

Mice can get into the smallest of places and then expire, which can give you that death smell. You did well if you don't have to replace the catalytic converter.
good deal! Nothing complicated. My 2008 base model 2.5 Forester is at 170K and I'm taking it x-USA and back. Can't wait. (6.5K mile trip) Gaskets still good, no coolant loss. Oil changed religiously since I bought it at 98K.

Long story short, started watching your videos and said "hey! lets make a test drive for the Outback", and guess what, I'm waiting for December to pick up my 2023 Outback. Thank you again. Seems like a great deal. Excited for some forester content! Our 2016 forester has 135k, hopefully the CVT lasts a while. Just added an external cooler because it would pop the AT TEMP light on long summer road trips in the southwest. Otherwise it's been a flawless car. Well, except for the dealership not bothering to clean the battery posts.
Woah.. I have a 2004 Subie with only a few more miles than that (165k). You must drive a lot. :p
Definitely get a cvt service if you haven't and maybe consider a temp gauge for the trans temp if you're really concerned

Regarding the P0420, I'd give Duralube Severe Catalytic Converter cleaner a try. We have had success with it. Looking forward to the series!
$3k is a very good price. The lack of corrosion on that car gives me a little bit of a sad (I just was under my '11 Outback yesterday - sad face). I'll be interested in seeing the clockspring inspection and what you find with that P0420 code. Another great video.
People need to grease their cars in the rust belt.. You need a barrier between the frame (metal) and oxygen to prevent the metal from oxidation. I grease the crap out of mine now and rust has stopped developping for the most part. I spray other cars too other then my Subaru Outback 2010.. I spray inside doors, side panels every 2 years (panels 1x a year if the car had never been sprayed and had rust prior to spraying) and underside, rocker panels (in and out), wheel well 1x a year.
Sounds like you got a very good deal since you can do the labor yourself. If someone had to pay to get everything fixed then it would not be such a find.
Definitely a good deal for that Forester. That said, if it were mine and I were planning to flip it I would NOT get OEM Subaru parts for some of that. You could save at least $1000 on the cat, shocks, tie rod end, and wheel bearing, nor would I put in leather. There's just too many miles on it. Then again to get top dollar it might make sense. I'm looking forward to all the videos coming up!
My Forester II 2002 2.0 working great. My favourite car for local street, work and winter. 210k on it. No head gasket issue.

I have an 02 wrx and a 97 outback. I fix em up and hold on to them. At one point i thought about flipping Subarus but I like old ones that need a lot and I dont really think about selling them. The wagon maybe. Replaced the motor with an updated jdm 2.5 shortblock and found some less worn ej25d heads out of a early forester.

I have a 2015 California Forester that is in great shape. 1 issue is a small oil leak in spark plug wells. Hopefully now you have the 2014 Forester you will have that job video up soon.

I have a 2014 Forest Limited with 132K on it. I recently had the all 4 struts replaced and the front bushings. I also had the CVT fluid replaced and had the throttle body cleaned (your recommendations 👍). I enjoy working on my cars (also a 2008 Honda civic at 135K) mostly maintenance stuff. I am so looking forward to this project car.
Thank you for doing a series on the Forester. I like the Outback and the Crosstrek but in New England used market, those cars cost more than the Forester. 😊So I target the Foresters and stay in a great utilitarian, dependable AWD car.
Chances are the cat is fine, just a bad O2 or leaking exhaust as you said. I'd say that will determine whether you got a deal or not. For you the added content will make it a good deal. For a non-youtuber the need for a cat will tell the story.
Some thigns I'd consider mainenance items at that mileage also like the outer tie rod, cv shaft, struts.
I had a bad clock spring in a week old 16’ impreza that lit the airbag,abs, n traction control lights.
the thing is people would find the milage is too much for what you're asking for but, we know that forester has just broken in with that number. Anyway, looking forward to upcoming projects on it.
I love those Subaru’s! My eyes turn to dollar signs because I know it either needs control arm bushings or rear wheel bearings… or both! I’ve done so many now to the point I can replace both front control arms, all 4 bearings and alignment in 2 hours… if there not too much rust that is
Love the channel. I will say that you might make 2000 if the cat is good. Break even if the market is still hot and the cat is bad. I bought a 2008 Impreza for 6500 with 98000 miles. Very clean except that I see some seepage on one side of the motor. Coolant looked spotless upon purchase. 3000 miles later it’s looking dark. I’m looking at a head gasket change. I missed the seepage upon inspection. I’m looking at doing the job myself.

My 2010 Forester with 451,704 miles just had spark plugs, wires, and coils replaced last week and the beautiful check engine light came back on. This is my vacation week, why me? LOL.

@@mikeessary4925 Yes, the three main things to stay on top of. 1. All oil changes according to your manual. 2. Spark Plug and wires. 3. PVC Valve. And you will make it to 300,000. My ole girl made it up to 299,000. This is my second engine with the same transmission. YMMV.

@@mikeessary4925 Usually, I do the trans/power steering/ front and rear differentials every 30,000 miles. According to the manual, plugs and wires should be checked and replaced at 15,000 miles. I got a 2004 Forrester manual and my next was a 2018 Forrester tried to find a used manual.(hard to find one out there).Normally I have been a van man tride and true throughout my life. And always vowed to be a van man and I would be driving one in heaven I would always say. Never say never unless its getting rid of your Baru.
But now since im a grandfather I have gotten a subaru and prob will stick with them for life. I hate volvos . The 2018 was rated one of the safest on the road.(btw) I love my subaru even though everyone calls me a woman who loves women. Which doesn't bother me at all. Mainly since one of my bestie friend is one. Long live freedom of choice. Anyway I love my subaru for life. Love my grandchildren, my baru !!!oh and my wife too.

Own a 2015/ u gotta check Transmission fluid/CV axles with Bearings standard weak parts/ Lower control arm bushings common problem.. oil dilution Biggest issue.. Be more straigh forward technically..
