The cost to fix her Ford Fusion would have conservatively been only about $600-800. Why in the name of all that's sacred she would get rid of that car to buy a $20,000 Ford Fusion? If I heard right, wasn't the "newer" Ford Fusion only a few years newer than the car she got rid of?
@@robindear5043 it's a woman thing and an emotional decision. I remember when my mom's water heater went out and as we were mopping up the water because the tank busted, she started shouting that she was going to sell her house. I told her that's like selling your car over a dead battery. If women would take an interest in fixing things themselves, they would think more analytically. The only way to have a car that never needs brake work is to not own a car or trade yearly.
I think she was being shortsighted in her decision, and now regrets it. It may have taken a few days, maybe even a few weeks, but she could have inquired around and found a mechanic or shop that could've fixed her car for a reasonable price. I have known just as many men who make emotional, "spur of the moment" decisions, then later, after the smoke clears, they regret it. This has nothing to do with gender. Will she negotiate with the dealership to return the car, even though her 30 days have passed? I doubt it. She didn't mention it, but I wonder if she traded her car in for the $20,000 one, or has it sitting in her driveway?

Listening to all these student loan debt stories confirms that I made the right choice doing an electrician apprenticeship which i didnt have to pay for and now im 24 and I earn over 200k a year. 👏 Thank god I always hated school.
School definitely is not for everyone and it can cause debt if you jump in blindly. However if you get a degree in a high paying career, you can pay that debt off easily with your income. This is especially true if you take study seriously by not flunking subjects and semesters, working a part time job while you study and paying it off as you go. Everyone in my family has followed this formula and been successful with it
My 1st grade brother saw his teacher during Spring Break, and she asked how he was doing. He responded "Better than I deserve." The teacher looked at my parents and started laughing. "It's never too early to teach them about debt."
MsClarinut in the UK I think it’s much simpler ( fair enough it’s how I grew up ) but it’s just year 1, year 2 all the way up to 11 then you go to college or sixform which is classed as year 12 and 13.

I come from parents who grew up during the great depression. I was in a house at 21, two children and we were never late on anything. Cash on the barrel. Old cars, scratch cooking, and strict budget. I fit every job in to make it work. Mortgage paid off at 41. My contemporaries couldn't understand how we did it. They paid rent, drove a nice car (or two), bought the latest toys and didn't budget. Our kids went to local colleges and worked. No debt. I thank my parents (high school educated & hard working people) for their frugal ways. ❤

Way to go... follow Dave's Baby Steps and you'll be on your way to financial security. I'm 62 years old and discovered Dave two years ago. I've paid off over $15,000 In debt during that time and am now on Baby Step 4. My only regret... I wish I had heard about Dave Ramsey twenty years ago. His methods WORK, and if you're willing to commit to this process, it will, as Dave always says, "change your life."
@@twincherry4958 You can go to Dave Ramsey's TH-cam site to get the details, but basically they are the following... IN THIS ORDER: 1) Save $1,000. in an emergency fund. 2) Pay Off All debt, not counting your mortgage. 3) Save 3-6 months of your income. (Basically, a continuation of step 1.) 4) Save 15% of your yearly income in a retirement fund. 5) Save/invest in you children's college fund. 6) Pay Off your home early. 7) Build Wealth and be very generous along the way.

My best friend went to Cape Town for a speaking tour and along the way met his wife. I have met so many SA folks in the US and I have respect for them as we were once like them, but our culture has changed and we are not as strong as they are. I have been fascinated with the nation and have been learning Afrikaans language going on 2 year's on Mondly Language App. I have been #1 in the US a few times and I know thousands of words, a few hundred phrases and enjoy learning more. I don't know if I will ever be able to do sentence structure or Grammar well, but I hope when his wife is here that we can both teach one another language. What part of the country are you in? What type of work do you do? 🇿🇦🌝
Because he only lost his job, not his life. When we learn to thank God for another day of life, all our other "problems" seem so tiny, sure it sucks getting laid off, but we can always get another job, sometimes even a better one, but if you lose your life or someone you love, you can never get that back. It'll be alright, in the mean time stick to the Ramsey plan
It's called an instinct. How many people really give an honest answer to "How are you?" every time it is asked? Most people just say "good" and move on, regardless of how they really are.

As a former corporate Sprint Sales agent, I'm not surprised when people say their bills are $240-$300 anymore. Consumers have begun to treat cell phones just like cars with Financing and leases. In addition took being able to add cost to your bill for your phone you can now also add accessories on your account and pay them off monthly. To have a $300 bill you must have 3-4 lines with leases and insurance or 2 lines with tablets, accessories etc. My phone bill was $278 until I paid everything off to get rid of it and kept my 1 line. Now my bill is $84 a month on a major carrier. $120-$140 is the normal cost for 1 line and fully unlimited service from a major carrier, Sprint, Verizon, At&t, T-Mobile.
You don't realize this but you actually go in debt for your cellphone just like a car. Phone is worth, $900, if you could afford the $900 you wouldn't finance or lease.
I was 8 grand in credit card debt for the last 3 or 4 years. Just paying the minimum. I make about 30k a year right now but in the past 4 months i've paid over 6 grand. 2 more to go!

Most physicians have 300k+ in student loans out of med school, and most manage to pay it off pretty quickly after becoming residency. A lot of hospitals will help pay for student loan forgiveness, residents have a cheap lifestyle by default (they don't really have time to vacation) and making attending or joining a practice can mean six figure sign on bonuses A lot of Dave's advice doesn't really apply to people pursuing any health degree but especially medicine. Unless you have a rich family, you need to accept having an extreme amount of debt for quite a while. There aren't really opportunities for semesters off or a second job while you're in a rigorous academic program; managing your living expenses and maximizing what a hospital will pay for are your only real options. 345k each is the high end of normal. I was taken aback by how disgusted (lack of a better term) he was with this caller when that's not an abnormal number for first year residents. The guy called with some pretty good questions about prioritizing where to put income and Dave just kept talking over him with "big debt bad." For what it's worth family med can be quite well paying if you start up a practice and do billable procedures in house. Do a lot of family med docs do that, no. But the possibility is there.
I love the whole "I needed a $20,000 car. I had no choice." mentality. I bought a car for $1500, put less than $1500 of work into it (including basic maintenance) and its still working 3 years later.
I'll never get that line of thought. Even if you bought a $5000 car, you would still have to put $12-13k of work into it to even touch the cheapest new cars out there.
I bought a 2-door 1992 honda accord with 200k miles for $500 in the year 2013. I had 3 little kids one of which was in an infant car seat at the time. That was a p.i.a getting a baby in and out of. My point is if you are willing to make the sacrifice you can get ahead financially. Ps. The cars name is Julie and I still see her nee owner running around town in her in 2019 😄
@@raymondkay4896 It is simply the fallacy of the lack of upfront costs you get with buying a new car, rather than repairing a current one and/or fixing up a really cheap car. It is just really short sighted thinking, along with not being able to save any money, making it hard to pay for any sudden repairs. It leads to an endless loop of debt.
@@TankAssTanner I agree, I paid $3300 for an low mileage 18 year old camry a few years ago, it was nothing special, put about $750 in it to fix a few things that popped up within first few months(starter, timing belt, re-seal engine valve cover), another $200 since then and it's running just fine. So basically 4-5k for a car I've owned 2.5 years already with no sign of stopping, and every year I drive it I'm basically paying myself. Not a status symbol and doesn't look pretty and idles high at times, but it's about thinking long-term.
I have learned income is irrelevant with the majority of people as far as getting in debt. I know friends who make a 130k annually , and have 75k in car debt . No savings living paycheck to paycheck. I know people making 50k 30k just in car debt . They both live above there means.
I did not realize debt collectors pay cents on the dollar. Didn’t realize I had the power to negotiate. Wish I had that knowledge a year ago. Oh well. That debt has been paid off two weeks ago anyway, praise God. We are on our way to becoming debt free in a hurry. Thanks, Dave!
You had more integrity. They haven't paid a cent in years and their credit is shot because of it. You took out money promising to pay it back and fullfilled that obligation. I'd feel better about that.
When you figure out how much is just interest they want from you it should make it easy to negotiate. It should be illegal to charge those interest rates.

I don’t understand how people call Dave and are literally in shock when he tells them to undo everything that got them in their situations. I’ve been in a similar situation and I was willing to do everything I could to get out of debt without question.
Right? It’s like people call in expecting him to have some miracle cure that will just erase all of their debt. It’s almost like they don’t expect to actually have to pay everything back. I’m no financial guru but the ONE thing I’ve always stayed on top of is paying off debt. People get into things thinking “oh, it’s only so much a month, I can do that!” And then they accumulate multiple things like that until all of those little things amount to more than their take home pay. Then they wonder how it all happened 🤦🏻♀️
Dave gives really good advice to people who are fine working 9-5 for someone else, but youll never be able to retire at 45 sipping pina coladas in mexico with his advice. Most debts are fine to keep, CC isnt one of those, but, paying off just about any other debt is just for piece of mind. assuming the interest is below ~5%, I personally wouldn't bother paying them off, instead if invest my money, it's not hard to get above 10% ROI on investments which means by taking out a debt instead of paying with cash youre 5% a year, every year until you die, richer than you would be paying off the loan. To most people this is hard to wrap your ahead around but it's the mindset your average millionaire has.
Marshmallow Man, It's not funny at all. Dave actually made himself sound kinda stupid when he said that staying calm was not a good quality for a doctor. Um... most of us would want our doctor or surgeon to resist the urge to panic.

School definitely is not for everyone and it can cause debt if you jump in blindly. However if you get a degree in a high paying career, you can pay that debt off easily with your income. Wow! I pay over $300 for my cell phone bill monthly lol
@@drjonesey5 I have five lines on my account. We have unlimited data, talk and text. We actually have the account with Sprint.

When you and your wife spent $600k on med school and Dave Ramsey says he wouldn’t want you operating on him 😭😂
I guess he’s not going to any doctor then
And the guy is a psychiatrist!!
Most physicians have 300k+ in student loans out of med school, and most manage to pay it off pretty quickly after becoming residency. A lot of hospitals will help pay for student loan forgiveness, residents have a cheap lifestyle by default (they don't really have time to vacation) and making attending or joining a practice can mean six figure sign on bonuses
A lot of Dave's advice doesn't really apply to people pursuing any health degree but especially medicine. The guy called with some pretty good questions about prioritizing where to put income and Dave just kept talking over him with "big debt bad."
For what it's worth family med can be quite well paying if you start up a practice and do billable procedures in house. Do a lot of family med docs do that, no. But the possibility is there.

I'll never get that line of thought. Even if you bought a $5000 car, you would still have to put $12-13k of work into it to even touch the cheapest new cars out there.
The price people will pay for a status symbol.
Man.. these Dave Ramsey shows is like "Beyond Scared Straight"! 😱
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Dave needs Big Dragon on the show
Good analogy
I was raised by a single mom living off a 15k salary ... and this guy has an issue with living off of 90k. Sounds rough.
I agree. So many people I know simply live beyond their means.
People have no humility
Some people just don't know how to live simple. Too much pride in buying used anything.
Hilarious ain't it
I have learned income is irrelevant with the majority of people as far as getting in debt. I know friends who make a 130k annually , and have 75k in car debt . No savings living paycheck to paycheck. I know people making 50k 30k just in car debt . They both live above there means.
He said “don’t even start talking” 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣🤣🤣😂

I did not realize debt collectors pay cents on the dollar. Didn’t realize I had the power to negotiate. Wish I had that knowledge a year ago. Oh well. That debt has been paid off two weeks ago anyway, praise God. We are on our way to becoming debt free in a hurry. Thanks, Dave!
You can negotiate anything! Remember that!
You can go to sleep with pride knowing you fulfilled your obligation to the fullest. Congratulations.
@@KatieBellino You don't owe a debt collector anything. They buy that debt for nothing from the person she actually owed. They are simply leeches and don't deserve any money.
Paid cash for my groceries, went home and cleaned my home after listening to David before I get in trouble 😆. He is awesome!
Thank you, Dave. I'm surrounded by this thinking. My friends won't listen and I feel like I'm one of the few people I know with any money.
Was 67,000 (mostly student loans) in debt when I started listening and incorporating his principles. A year and two months later I’m still 29,000 in debt never though I’d be able to pay even that much, it takes time but it works. Ramen noodles are delicious btw.
I was 67K (all student loans) in debt 3 years ago. It's now $17K. Staying consistent is key. Also you may wanna try some rice and beans sometime 😁 keep your eye on the ball. You can do this!
@@kramez9156 🤣.. Rice and beans with some fried eggs. Or pasta and sauce. All cheap alternatives. I am going to be death free this week. Only mortgage now. Stay strong folks. Keep the goal in front always.
I,
Congrats! Stay strong!!
Beans and rice with Mexican blend cheese on top is also delicious. My husband and I are debt free for over a year now but we still eat beans and rice once or twice a week because we like it so much.
Here I am freaking out about $1,700 consumer debt that I will have gone in a couple weeks lol These videos always make me feel better about myself.
I would be living in a tent and collecting cans everywhere I rode a bike because I wouldn't have a car and stealing food from restaurant dumpsters if I had debt like some of these people.
More then I ever had although I'm planning on getting a mortgage since switching from my rental to a similar house would save me $300 a month excluding repairs
Vincent Titone .... I know I have $3,000 in credit card debt and I feel terrible looking at it..... but after tuning in to the show that $3,000 is nothing compared to some of these crazy people
Vincent Titone i
That’s soo true man!!
I don’t understand how people call Dave and are literally in shock when he tells them to undo everything that got them in their situations. I’ve been in a similar situation and I was willing to do everything I could to get out of debt without question.
sarangbae That’s one of the sexiest things a woman can say
Amaequiaas Corner love that. Power to you love ❤️.
That's why you can describe that in the past tense!
He makes me feel responsible for the debt I don't have...LEGEND
Remember, there's always someone else that has it worse than you😅
Unless you're OJ Simpson.
Lol usually out of stupidity.
I have student loans but I do count my blessings!👏
@Moshe Mangena I'm sure he meant to say "Nicole Simpson".
I’ve been holding off paying off my credit card. Ten minutes of listening to Dave, it’s done!
@Tee then borrow money and try again, repeat until rich

You need to be in panic mode dude, I can't breathe and its not even my debt! Lol Dave cracks me up!
I don't get funny,why?
Marshmallow Man, It's not funny at all. Dave actually made himself sound kinda stupid when he said that staying calm was not a good quality for a doctor. Um... most of us would want our doctor or surgeon to resist the urge to panic.
