I had a red Grifter in the 70s. I mind wearing out the front mudguard plastic bit by folding it into the tyre for motorbike noise. I also mind the slip gear if peddling hard ! Some great restoration work here Joe.
I was just thinking exactly that. Those flaps must be hens teeth rare! I had a Grifter XL which had metal mudguards, I was always jealous of my mate who had 2 ‘classic’ grifters.
Hi druizZ, hope you are well. We love restoring these old icons and keeping them working. I'm glad you enjoyed the video and thank you for the compliments it means so much, cheers Joe.
Fav bike,,EVER!! Nice sticker action too. Also the spring back into its original place for the stand ..bravo...I could never get my one back working once my 8 year old self had fikck it up ... It got wired up to the frame.lol... Great work
I had a chopper in purple and my young friend had a green bomber bike like a mini grifter .. kid turned up with a blue grifter and our jaws dropped as the precursor to the mountain bike mixed in with a BMX and he did the old mudguard motorbike trick, too we used to take them to the local Woods and do ramps and sorts of stuff until we needed a new set of bikes. Then everybody bought raleigh burners with mag wheels that was like something from out of space. Great days having a bicycle was first coming of age Before you could get a driving license we used to literally get all around London on those things pretty much .All the kids in my school had to do a cycling proficiency test didn’t matter how young you were once you completed that you got a badge could go where you want pretty much unhindered by adults.. 1970s madness
I had a Raleigh Grifter for my main Christmas present, I was 9, so must have been 1981 Colour Red.. Hours of fun back then. I really appreciated it, Cleaned it weekly, my grandad use to get me 4 sachets of Turtlewax car shampoo and tin turtle wax chrome polish.. So it was so shiny 🚴♀️🌟 I remember the roads being re-tarmac and I got tar on the under side of the frame, I could not get it off, i told grandad, he gave me a little glass bottle with Bright green liquid in it, it got it off, it was Liquid swarfega.. Fond memories of my childhood.🥰
Hi Vicky, sounds like you had lots of fun on your Grifter back then. That's one of the reasons we do these videos, so people can remember how good bikes are and what they have meant to us over our lifetime. There are very few things in life that can come close to tell a story of your childhood better than a bike, your story shows that perfectly. Thanks for telling us your memory and I hope you continue to watch our videos, cheers Joe.
Brilliant series! Brought back some good memories, I had a red grifter, weighed a tonne! I could pull better wheelies on it, than in could my BMX which I had after the grifter!
Hi Rory, sounds like you had a lot of fun on your Grifter back in the day, It's really good to hear your memories, there are a few other Grifter and Chopper comments on our channel which give a really good picture of how things were, simpler times! Thanks for contributing with your story, it means a lot. By the way, The blue was probably my favourite, cheers Joe.
Nice work! It's good to hear another bike being saved from the scrap heap. Glad you liked the video and hope you get chance to watch some of our other one's too, cheers Joe.
@@JoesBikesUK ive got a mk2 avanti (didnt have the bb u brake) frame set n group set, has been in the garage about 40 years, safe to say, its gone a tad rusty. wheels cant be saved, how ever, the 531 frame is good, couple of rust spots, though id restore as a mav 18 pro, as i got a minty ozark n half ridy mirage. none of the main guys, do the 18 pro graphics. pay obvioiusly :)

Hate seeing people using adjustable spanners on nuts instead of using the correct spanner the lighting in this video is poor i wouldn't let this guy loose on my wheel barrow 😂
Hi, thank you for the feedback - we sure will take this on board! Thank you for the concern with the tools we use. However, the Knipex wrench we use is an amazing piece of kit and very versatile. It increases the torque and grip as you use it, and we find is the best fit for the original Raleigh nut sizes (which weren't metric). If you'd like to look into it more we have a link below: www.knipex.com/products/pipe-wrenches-and-water-pump-pliers/pliers-wrench-xl-pliers-and-a-wrench-in-a-single-tool/pliers-wrench-xl-pliers-and-wrench-single-tool/8603400 We hope you come back soon - we'll remember your comment - and we hope you enjoy the next video pal!
@@twizzlestickx7 It's definitely great to have a variety of tools, and nice to know you also have a variety like we do at Joe's Bikes. I remember having the blue one. I’d peddle like mad in 3rd gear and do a really long and fast frame stand, much to the amazement of onlookers.
