Every veteran surface RC'r knows more metal parts means more weight which means more damage in bad landings, and more metal also means no flex like plastic parts so even more breakage. Keeping them 95% stock with a VERY few strategic metal parts is ALWAYS the right way to go.
I love the Xmaxx and it is my favorite car but I have to be honest. These small metal parts are not necessary and sometimes makes this truck less durable because of the added weight and lack of flex. For example, the metal steering links will bust the plastic cone on the front bulkhead everytime when you have a crash. The metal hubs are nice and actually improve the truck on the front and rear. The metal diff cases are not necessary unless you put insane power through the truck. The body looks cool but not $1400 cool. I had hoped for a new design and different car from Traxxas. Most of these upgrades I have already. Facts are this is basically a $1400 Xmaxx 🤣🤣🤣 Marketing scheme at its best. ⚡️
If anyone knows what they are talking about its this man.. traxxas should have got with someone who actually bashes to help them make the ultimate.. i would have liked to see them do something about the hinge pins.. give us mod 1.5 gears and a new esc.. maybe could have updated the center shaft.. they mossed a really good opportunity imo
@@BeautyBeastRCI agree partly but parts here in 🇨🇦 are easier to get for the Xmaxx and are generally cheaper. But I won’t buy this ultimate it’s too expensive. I’ve got a regular one already. And I just ordered a new Kraton 6S exb rtr that I’m waiting on to ship 😂
@@BeautyBeastRC True, but really I'm not one to talk about price because when I bought my Outcast 8S recently, I manage to convince myself I "needed" $400 in upgrades mostly from M2C, a little something from Vitavon, and some shiny bits from Hot Racing. I might have an addiction to small metal parts! I need an intervention! Really less than $100 would have covered me on parts that I would actually need for my level of bashing (which is far less extreme then what you and Thunder do).
the belted tires alone are 200 for 4 .. And with all the extras priced out right would put this thing at about 2000$ 1500 is high but not as high as it could be.
I have upgraded two I did a XRT with all the blue aluminum accessories and I also did a Snap-On Xmaxx with the red aluminum accessories...Both look awesome, but the Snap on Xmaxx is really cool!! great video 💯
The best basher you can buy is an XMAXX. I have 3 of them. I love them. My favorite RC to take out and just launch at skate parks. Also to be honest. It's best in almost stock with a few upgrades when bashing. All that aluminum is going to make it worse. Kevin Talbot proved it as well. I have one with all the Traxxas upgrades and it's too heavy for real bashing. RPM knuckles an M2C 2-piece center drive shaft and hing pins are all it needs to be a basher king. The rest is just added weight to break the plastic parts.
Great review and bash Greg 👊. The belted wheels look planted, surely a step up from the cheap stockers with fragile glued foams. Traxxas did put some nice bits on this version, but 1500$ is ridiculous 😂. Some would argue they should come standard at the stock price. Would be nice to see hardened steel gears and better drivetrain components. 🍻
Thanks bud! Yeah, the tires were awesome for just ripping on the throttle in the dirt. Price wise it’s tough for many to swallow, but there’s others out there that throw down the credit card like it’s nothing. I hear you on the gears. My ideal X-Maxx: upgraded gears, shock caps, servo and enjoy.
Great review. Appreciate all the effort put into these. The ultimate may not be a fit for everyone but for some that want a tricked out truck from the start or know they will add a lot of hop ups this looks like a good value.
from my experience with the 2020 x max I have never broken anything besides cracking the wheels 😅, go to the same hobby shop as you love the big jumps out back!
I think for $1500 there are better bashers. I bought the new Kraton 8s EXB RTR and I’ve had a couple small issues but got them sorted quickly. Being the Kraton and Outcast 8s are $1000 and you get a much more powerful power system I think that’s the way to go. Every time I go out I break my XMaxx but my Kraton survives. 🤷🏻♂️
Ps Nevers broke a thing on my xmaxx got it the first Day the 8s line came out merry x mas happy New years healt love and monétaire for you and your love one
You need the Jump Jack Pro ramp to fit in your Subaru. It folds up small into a backpack and opens up big. lol. I use 2 of them side by side with my XMAXX.
I personally don't think it needs almost any of those upgrades, except the servo (if the stock one goes bad) and the diff covers. I've done those two upgrades and it was worth it. Everything else mentioned just adds unnecessary weight. 4 years of experience with my X-Maxx 👍
Thanks for the really complete overview. For $1,500 you can get a DBXL-E plus both batteries and a charger. Cool lookin truck, but they are wild with their prices. Especially when you gotta solder on a proper battery connector.
Yeah. What’s worse is the esc only lasts a month. My xmaxx needed new servo and esc within 2 months. After max6, 1/10 strong servo, and RPM upgrades it’s really good.
Damn looks great, but seriously who can shell out 1500 for a rc? Again great review and nice that you told us about the breakages. I’ll pick up the original Xmaxx when I got the chance
Nice review and look at the truck Greg. I like how it looks. I have to say my Xmaxx is my favourite truck for bashing because it can just run on any surface even rough grounds, a lot easier then anything else. This price tag will be hefty here though 🇨🇦🎄
All weight isn’t bad obviously, otherwise they would build F1 cars out of balsa wood. It appears to me they have addressed weak spots in the old car without going over the top. The aluminum diff cover will help to prevent the gears from stripping, for example.
But obviously, people think all these overpriced aluminium optional parts are upgrades and will make the truck stronger, when in reality they rarely do!
Didn’t wanna see parts snapping after the first run. I’m with you, if the whole chassis is too stiff the shock with end with the weakest point snapping. You think a Sledge ultimate is coming ?
I've had three *used* xmaxxes, and still have two. they go for $500-700 in decent shape. Idk why you'd buy one new when so many sell on fb marketplace. I only ever upgrade to captured hinge pins, rpm or pro line rear hubs and on one of them I went Max5 for the esc. Anything more just adds weight and breaks more.
Yup, got one myself for 625 with 2 traxxas batteries, the LIVE dual charger, Mod 1.5, a spare motor that I just swapped out the bearing and sold on ebay for 100 bucks, new belted tires, and a Hobbywing 1100KV motor. The only thing is the body could be better but nothing 80 bucks couldn't fix. I honestly can't fathom how people spend 1400 on a new one with batteries and charger just to have it look like a used one after 1 pack.
Welp i just found a new R\C to want next year despite me already having an X-Maxx an older one but my old one kinda needs some work. One of the things i wish they did with this new truck is put in an 1,100KV Big Block motor i wonder if this truck has the 3496T VXL-8s ESC from the XRT. Update: But then i find out this truck is an in store only limited edition so i think i'll stick to my current X-Maxx. It's alright i already did quite a bit of work to mine.
Thing with belted tires is if they don’t balloon at all there’s less rotational force for flips. Not that they aren’t solid tires but an interesting choice by Traxxas. Seems like backflipping a monster truck is a no brainer.
Good review, enjoyed watching it. Yeah the Xmaxx is a good truck, I've had one for a couple of years now. I can only imagine what the price of this one will run, but probably over 2k AuD, which is a bit much for a lot of people, maybe most. The garden variety XRT runs that much down here in Aus. Those breakages. I can't tell for sure, but it looks like the threaded part comes to a hard shoulder, rather that a small radius. The radius would make the part stronger. Hard shoulders (90deg) are a no no in machining. Things break at that point all the time.
You almost have to go more metal all over Arrma EXB style, plastic meeting metal doesn’t usually end well in my experience bashing. Why did they not include the WideMaxx stuff too? My regular Xmaxx and XRT have held up well as is, tho my Arrma EXB 1:5 scale has held up even between (save for rear diff, two of them, probably XLX2 / 900 power).
Unfortunately the tubes turnbuckle seem to be a weak spot. However you can replace just the black threaded bit. Still, while I generally disagree that you can’t bash with aluminum steering, that seems to be somewhat true for the xmaxx. Maybe just stick to the aluminum servo saver
They went after all them small businesses to hang Christmas ornaments on the XMAXX And try to charge us $1500 when they should’ve been working on the drivetrain and their electronics and gave us a 12 S bundle
Aluminum tie rods are questionable for durability, but the rest looks good, ha I wrote this before I saw the links break... Figured that's what would happen
Well, the standard version is 999.99 and this comes in at 1499.99, I see no where you are saving bucks on all these alum parts?! And personally, I find most of the added parts to be nothing more than eye candy and unneeded weight. Traxxas needs to get off the Elon Musk pricing and listen to what people really want!! Excellent Review other wise!!
Traxxas missed it i think. The price is the killer, all the xmaxx needs is arms, captured hing pins and tires. Even those mods are debatable. Arrma's 8s line up is 100% a better buy and i love my xmaxx and it's my favorite rc but this new version for 1400 is a big no go.....
In my opinion traxxas should have given hd arms rather than the metal diff covers and aluminium shock caps. The very first thing to break is a lower arm and then replace it with an hd arm.
A LOT of would wouldn't consider this as being "better". In fact, in several ways, is actually "worse". I have a few thoughts on this, all of which come to the same conclusion - it's NOT worth it. 1) You can purchase the standard RTR, be "wise" in your upgrade decisions (as many have pointed out, Traxxas went (purposely???) 'overboard' in selecting upgrade parts), and sell off the brand-new no-longer-needed parts. In the end, you'll have an RC that's better than their 'Ultimate', and the final cost will be closer to $100-200 more than the standard RTR. 2) You can purchase a roller from an RC chop shop, be "wise" in your upgrade decisions, and end up with the same vehicle mentioned in option #1, but with a final cost that's equal to, or possibly slightly less than, the standard RTR. 3) Taking option #2 one step further, you could sell off the brand-new no-longer-needed parts, and end up with a final cost that's definitely less than the standard RTR. 4) Part of why Traxxas is probably doing this...and, as already pointed out by others...is that Traxxas probably has a large number of unsold 'upgrade' parts in their warehouse, which is probably due to the fact that most 3rd-party upgrade parts cost less than Traxxas' own upgrade parts and/or those 3rd-party parts are of higher quality (such as 7075 vs Traxxas 6061). 5) The final point has to do with something many have suspecting for several months - that Traxxas is going to soon be releasing a new version of the X-MAXX, based on the XRT chassis. This is a good way for Traxxas to 'unload' their excess of X-MAXX vehicles and/or upgrade parts. If you think about it, this, combined with point #4, makes a lot of logical sense.
Awesome review as always mate ... But traxxas have lost the plot with this ... Xmaxx is my favourite big basher but this aint worth 1500 US ... I can only imagine the rip off price they will charge in Australia 😅
I’ve never been into flat landing my trucks. It’s just not fun for me. I like to set my jumps up to where I the correct angle 📐 down ramp. I very rarely break parks.
I think this is Traxxas testing the waters for doing Ultimates on all their popular rc's. I wish they would've put all that time & energy in designing some badass unbreakable plastic. The aluminum is a nice looking touch, but the xmaxx is known for its durability from plastic. Traxxas make some vicious carbon fiber plastics, then call it the "Ultimate Badass". Lol!
The ONLY thing I was hoping for here was an updated body mount like the XRT. The gears should be standard. The servo saver is useful. Servo upgrade is MEH. All the rest are pointless!!
Have to say, given all the issues this truck still has because they chose not to address them, and the price. I think I'll stick with my Cen Reeper and my Kraton 8s rtr, more for my buck, reeper is just as fast and about the same power on 6s, also for that price ive already built my reeper to beast mode, and the kraton is more stable at all speeds
Increased the price by 50%!!! That’s a hard NO SALE from me. That’s simply ridiculous.
You be surprised how many people buy do all upgrades and than never use and sell it off , people have money some” 😂
Every veteran surface RC'r knows more metal parts means more weight which means more damage in bad landings, and more metal also means no flex like plastic parts so even more breakage.
Keeping them 95% stock with a VERY few strategic metal parts is ALWAYS the right way to go.
Its aluminum its not heavy

It’s still a traxxas plastic fantastic not so durable for my style truck. But I am pumped to try those new tires on mine with the 5687 and max5
I’ve never been into flat landing my trucks. It’s just not fun for me. I like to set my jumps up to where I the correct angle 📐 down ramp. I very rarely break parks.
Yup, in a perfect world having a down-ramp is best. But that's not an option for most.
Anything new with the traxxas max v2 this go around? Maybe the belted tires would be nice
If the XMaxx is like a big stampede..a UDR/slash..xrt/rustler. I wish they made a big bandit, a realistic 2wd baja buggy or something.
That's a pretty big truck lol
Not at all revamp, orther then after market parts ,new Chasey new body new electronics will do.thanks for your honest run down.
Lol!
4:05 HOLD UP! You just gonna skip over that E clip on the motor shaft?
1500bux 😂 fan boy item for sure
The ONLY thing I was hoping for here was an updated body mount like the XRT. The gears should be standard. The servo saver is useful. Servo upgrade is MEH. All the rest are pointless!!
The xrt hubs over the aluminum ANYDAY! They're cheaper and don't cause other stuff to get damaged.
In your opinion, does it matter where I buy it from?
I think it looks a lot better without the roof skid even though I have them because it saves the body. It looks better without it.
Is all the blue stuff, green on the green truck?
Ill stick to my tekno mt410 i can drop the thing off a skyscrapper and itll still keep running
They fix the rear clip?
Have to say, given all the issues this truck still has because they chose not to address them, and the price. I think I'll stick with my Cen Reeper and my Kraton 8s rtr, more for my buck, reeper is just as fast and about the same power on 6s, also for that price ive already built my reeper to beast mode, and the kraton is more stable at all speeds
Going up to 50 weight oil in the rear shocks keeps it from getting bucked off jumps so you're less likely to get a nose dive situation
Aluminum is only good for the diff covers. And bell crank rpm hubs and traxxas hd arms are best imo
🤣 That's funny because I kinda went in reverse of what you said. I got xrt hubs with rpm arms!
Yo where's the video you said you had on the new kraton 8s exb rtr? I been looking forward to you running it for a while
If it’s the “ultimate” then the absolute must have is a better steering servo. 2075 & 2075X just cannot cut it!
For 1700? You can keep it.
I would have no where to put that thing!
Hangs on the wall alright. Keep it on the garage on hooks.
What are your ramps?
I have never broken a plastic turnbuckle on our xmaxx!
I wonder if the gearing is the same as the original.
