The Porsche 964 RS Touring Review - Rare, Expensive & Desirable - But Is It Good?

  • Today I am driving a Porsche 964 RS Touring. One of only seven right hand drive examples and likely the only one in black, this is a very rare car. The RS has become a legendary moniker in the Porsche world, beginning with the fabled 1973 Carrera RS.
This was later followed by the 3.2 Carrera Club Sport, but the next official RS was this 964. Nowadays you'd pay the same as a new 911 GT3 RS for one of these, so is it that good?

Hi I bought my 964rsl back in 1999 for £25,000 and I owned it for 11years. The lhd RSL is way more desirable and pure than a RST. The RSL is so much lighter than the touring. No power steering or air con with 17 inch magnesium wheels it was not needed. Incredible brakes from le Mans race car .....
Basically Porsche started at the back of a standard 964 and worked their way to the front and removed weight. There is virtually no comparison to the the Touring.
After selling my RSL I left sports cars for 10 years. I have just bought a Honda S2000 another very special sports car!

260 bhp in such a small /light car is enough on a British B Road. Any more and you get in trouble very fast and without exploring the rev range. My old Cupra r with 225bhp was perfect and always fun compared to my newer cars with 400bhp and more.

i drove the 964 RS thinking that it would be a revelation but I guess the lack of power steering made it a very cumbersome drive on any village 90 degree bend. it's fine at speed but compared to say a 997 GT3 I would never say that the older car is the purer one. it might be great for some but I think it's somewhat overrated. I think everyone should drive one and decide for themselves. For me the 997 GT3 has one of the best steering feel ever and is the sweet spot between the aircooled and the "larger" wheelbase cars such as 991 & 992.

Back when 964’s were £20k a pop we had great fun piloting a 4S over the moors. Felt more than the quoted 250bhp and sounded just gorgeous over 4K revs. Word was the 250bhp was measured at the wheels by Porsche....
    Dunno how true that is!

It's all about the seam welding, suspension, and ability at the limit. So driving it nowhere near the limit is pointless. A standard Carrera makes more sense. A shad shame these are now so expensive that no one drives them near the limit. I had a colleague who had one as a track weapon 20 years ago. LOTS of fun.

I don't know for this Porsche, but engine blueprinting is a thing amongst dealer cars and press cars. I'm really into M3 E36s and I have known a couple of them which were surprinsingly powerfull. About 340/350hp in stock configuration. For a 321hp n/a car. One turned out to be a press car fully speced options wise, and the other one was BMW Paris's main dealer's car. Both had a Motorsports ECU, tuned by BMW specifically for the cars. My mechanic told me he believes the sets of pistons and rods have substancial difference in weights from the factory, and the the clearances and tolerances can be made better that OEM. Thus explaining how a carefully hand assembled engine, with selected parts, and bespoke tuning could have slightly more power.

72 bhp per litre, that’s really surprising.
And yet, it’s arguably one of the best driver’s cars ever.

My dream car, absolutely love it, I would love the chance to drive one especially on roads like that.
Please dont laugh at this, but the handling and poise, not necessarily outright power and torque, but the way they flow and handle, and are a joy to behold, to me that is so very similar to the renault clio rs cars, my own personal experience is in a 197 cup, I'm no keke Rosberg but there are similarities right?

In the mid 1990s when grey imports from Europe were all the rage you could easily find an LHD RS for sub £20k, a regular C2/C4 would be around £16k. When they were launched the UK magazines sleighted them as being too firm, too noisy and pointless. Hence why they were cheap and unloved for a time. More evidence why the current journalists vs 'influencers' debate is relevant

Great review, brilliantly put about 911 pricing,it's something that can't be ignored and has an overbearing presence when reviewing a 911,I get the feeling that with every 911 from the very beginning, they'd be beyond fantastic but then the price ogre rears it's ugly head and they're merely "very good",I think like all these prestige brands, the price is adversely affected by investors that don't really give a damn about the cars themselves leaving a handful that are willing to pay the price because they love the car.

Hmmm...values..I remember so many tired, bubbly, shabby and regularly crashed 911’s that lurked around in auction halls trying to get £5/7000 from those daft enough to buy such piles of trouble. That was around 20 years ago..and the impression has never left me...but the prices have! I never wanted one then and I wouldn’t want one of those old wrecks now...but fully restored, rebuilt engines, rust removed...maybe that makes a difference...but I will take a new one please..old Porsches never worked for me with that awkward clutch pedal. 😐😐😳🙂🙂

Such a proper sports car. Just wanted to say proper when Brits are in the chat.

I might have a unicorn in my pocket for you if the owner is agreeable
