Barbie The Welder is an American metal sculptor, published author of six books, and an advocate for the skilled trades from Pompano Beach, Florida.
Growing up in a deeply creative home, Barbie’s Mom is a published cartoonist and her Dad a jack of all trades, Barbie was encouraged by both parents to work with her hands and mind to create. Inspired by the movie Cast Away, starring Tom hanks, Barbie attended an adult welding program at Elmira, New York Boces in November 2007 and was hired at Cameron Manufacturing And Design in Horseheads, New York in March 2008 where she learned the art of welding and fabrication from the brilliant craftsman she worked with. Barbie took her fabrication skills home and taught herself how to design and create art in her garage after work at night and on the weekends.
Barbie quit her job she loved to realize her dream and become a full-time artist September 1, 2014.
Because of the influence Bob Ross had on her growing up, Barbie began teaching how to weld art through her TH-cam channel in 2015 after not being able to find resources to learn.
Soon after she was invited by a publisher to write a book teaching how to weld art, and How To Weld Horseshoe Art; 30 Projects You Can Easily Weld At Home was born. Barbie went on to write and self publish five more books, How To Weld Scrap Metal Art; 30 Easy Welding Projects You Could Make At Home, How To Weld Silverware Animals Metal Art Welding Projects For Fun and Profit, The Inspiration Blueprint; How To Design and Create Your Inspired Life, Fuck You Fuel; How To Turn Shit Into Sugar, and The Artist Guide To Branding, Marketing and Selling Art Online.
Working with Bogi Latiner for a month in 2017 on Bogi’s Girl Gang Garage all woman’s frame up build of a 57 Chevy pick up later unveiled at Sema became a mentorship for Barbie that continues to help her grow herself and her business. Barbies other inspirations include Indian Larry and Billy Lane both who caught her attention through the TV series biker build off in early 2000. The craftsmanship and creativity of both men spoke to her soul.
Barbie started out riding on the gas tank of her dad‘s Honda motorcycle because she was too little to hold on sitting behind him, so when she was asked by Jesse James Dupree, lead singer of Jackyl, to design and create two sculptures for Harley Davidson she jumped at the chance driving the 24 hours to Sturgis by herself from NY and sculpting HOGs 35th anniversary sculpture live at Sturgis motorcycle rally at the Pappy Hoyle Campground and then she returned home to sculpt Harley Davidson’s 115th anniversary sculpture in her garage which was later presented to Harley Davidson on stage during the Jackyl concert at the 115 anniversary celebration in Milwaukee.
Barbie has welded live at Americade Motorcycle Rally, SEMA show in Vegas for Miller Welders, Harley Davidsons 115th Anniversary, and at shows and events up and down the east coast.
Barbie has designed and created sculptures for Miller Welders, the American Welding Society, Chicago Pneumatic, Carolina Shoe Company, two cities and clients in many countries.

Yay Barbie! Where do you source your imagination? It's there in everything you make. Tools are important but having something cool to make is essential!

I get inspired from everything!! I’ll have a conversation and something will pop an image into my mind, or watching a movie or daydreaming or showering. I just find ideas everywhere!! However I believe it’s a learned skill, I’ve been full time 5.5 years and weldin art almost every single day long hours. In the beginning I had a couple ideas but I googled metal art and found inspiration there. Like anything it’s gotten much easer with time.

Just a hint to improve the lighting quality in your shop, paint the ceiling with an exterior grade white gloss. I have a low concrete ceiling in the welding bay at work and painting part of it improved the light levels from the florescent lights.

@@BarbieTheWelder I emptied my shop, cleaned it well, stripped the floor, and painted all 4 wall plus the ceiling and floor with pure white satin paint. It's like I added two more 4' dual bulb fluor fixtures in there, and stuff which ends up on the floor is much, much easier to find. The flooring paint doesn't last, but a couple years is good.

I purchased an Eastwood Mig175, and it came with a spool gun for under $650., and it works awesome. It is not designed to run on a generator. With that said, I would not let anyone but Barbie use it.

Very interesting, thanks. I'm with you on the flap discs and die grinders. Revelations to me, both! Wondering if you'd do a video on metal finishing some time? Like maybe rough up a bit of stainless then go through the steps you take to get it to a finish. Cheers, take it easy ... art piece pictures will follow shortly. Namaste.

Your breaking my heart here. In my shop there is one blue (Hobart Brothers, made long before they were bought by Miller) and 10 Lincoln's. Everything from wire feeds, tig, tombstones, weld n power and two SAE 200 (long hood and jr). Also graduated from Lincoln's welding school.

Hey my friend, honestly it’s more about the person running the machine than the machine itself, at the end of the day it’s the skills that the welder brings to the machine! Even though you’re a red man I still love ya, you’re a welder😉🤘🏻💙👩‍🏭

Love the video, however most of us probably can't afford going out to buy a $1300.00 mig welder, I think some other
cheaper welder options might be warranted, as one can get machines that do the same as the miller for probably 1/2 the price. Could you suggest some other options?

Hi Barbie, how long have you been using the Miller 211 and what others have you or do you have. Looking to buy a 211 soon. I don’t want to buy a less welder then upgrade later so need some more info. Thx

Do you leave your Miller mig on same settings for 16 gauge or do you just switch to tig at thinner gauges? My mig with 30 wire will start to blow holes around 16 gauge on corners ect if I don’t tune it way down, I wish I could afford a tig setup most of what I do is metal art but with a mig it’s tough.
