My dad was at this game, he brought home one of those white Pom poms you can see the crowd holding, we still have it. I was 8 and my brother was 11 at the time. If I was asked to pick only one game to sum up baseball to a foreigner, this would be it. Great pitching and defense along with clutch hitting. A brash new team taking on a dynasty at it's peak. Also, you have to remember that this was only a couple months after 9/11. Despite being the team everyone loved to hate, New York was the sentimental favorite to win because of the attack...the crews were watching the game while still clearing wreckage downtown. I lived in Phoenix and while my heart went out to New York, I had to root for my snakes. I think the fact that it was one of the best series of all time was enough of a tribute.

Mariano Rivera throwing the match away after tying the game ended up saving a life. Had the Yankees won, his teamate Enrique Wilson would have flown to the Dominican Republic after the team celebrated in their victory parade. Since they lost, he had to postpone his flight. Had the Yankees won, and Wilson went to the DR as planned, he would have died since it was the same flight that suffered a crash in Queens killing everyone on board.
This is such a historical world series for a multitude of reasons

I remember that game on the radio as clear as day. I so wanted Arizona to win but was 100% sure they would lose. I sat stunned after that last blooper for hit. WOW!

Considering the Yankees were going for a FOUR PEAT, and this game was played literally as the Twin Towers were still smoldering back in NY, a Game 7 win by the Arizona Diamondbacks over Rivera is one of the biggest upsets in sports history

Rivera chose the worst possible time to blow a save.... He was lights out 95% of the time... This one stings the most to him I bet...

Dbacks dominated that series outscoring the Yankees like 36-14 in the series and still had a chance to lose the series. I don't think Rivera had ever blown a save until that night. I'll never forget it.

In this century when we’ve seen so many seemingly impossible occurrences in sports (Cubs, Red Sox, Patriots champs, Cavs over a 73-win GS team, etc.) it’s hard to relate to people how impossible this ending was. Rivera didn’t blow saves, esp in big moments, and in the backdrop of 9/11 which impacted everyone of course but NYC the most, I couldn’t believe what I was seeing take place here. It just seemed impossible, but it happened.

The pitchers alone made this series a seven game series... Ill always remember Randy's bird killing pitch which wasn't a part of thos series, i believe it was during the preseason lol... The Diamondbacks had nice uniforms...

Yankees got lucky one time too many in this non-World Series keeping it tied 3-3 with a minimum of runs against a weak Arizona closer. Game 6 was a far better measure of how much the Yankees were outmatched by a far superior Arizona team.
