My dad was at this game, he brought home one of those white Pom poms you can see the crowd holding, we still have it. I was 8 and my brother was 11 at the time. He called us on the phone when they won, and we literally couldn’t hear a word he said, all I heard from the receiver was the deafening roar of the crowd. It was a really special moment. What a game.

The number of star players on both teams was remarkable. A few inducted in the HOF (Randy, Jeter, Mariano, Mussina) and some that should be inducted. Others borderline HOF like O'Neill, Bernie, Petite. Great series and great talent.

That's definitely a game I will always remember. It's been 22 yrs and I remember jumping from the couch and hitting the ceiling with excitement! One of the greatest game 7 of all time!
If I was asked to pick only one game to sum up baseball to a foreigner, this would be it. Great pitching and defense along with clutch hitting. A brash new team taking on a dynasty at it's peak. Also, you have to remember that this was only a couple months after 9/11. Despite being the team everyone loved to hate, New York was the sentimental favorite to win because of the attack...the crews were watching the game while still clearing wreckage downtown. I lived in Phoenix and while my heart went out to New York, I had to root for my snakes. I think the fact that it was one of the best series of all time was enough of a tribute.
I think that being right after 9/11 just amplified the moment for America! We needed this at that time. It was incredible. We were so united at that time and it was amazing to behold.
It is. It's unfortunate that their other three teams haven't been so lucky. Cardinals should've won in 2008, and Suns should've won this past year, but both teams just couldn't seal the deal. Coyotes have never been good though.

Remember watching this one for sure! At the time I was saying to myself before the D-Backs came up to bat in the 9th 'Just get somebody on base, that's all, then they have a shot a coming back' this was even with Rivera on in the 9th who rarely ever slipped up in the 9th until that night. Once the D-Backs started to rally, it was almost like you could sense it - they were going to come back even against Mariano & the Mighty Yankees. One of the most exciting finishes ever to one of the best World Series ever. :-D
Every 9/11, I think about this game and watch this highlight. The upstart Diamondbacks vs the mighty mighty Yankees and the New York "mystique" and "aura" after the World Trade Center tower attack. World Series. Game 7. Bottom of the 9th. Down 1 run. Every kids' dream. Pressure intense. The most exciting game I've ever witnessed live.

I was so happy for Arizona. Not because I was a fan but because I was such Yankee hater. Rivera was such an amazing closer and to be able hit off him in the 9th inning down a run. Tremendous stuff.
The Arizona lineup for that year was insane. A criticism I've heard is that they bought their win with those players, but that makes it even better that they beat the Yankees at their own game.
I am English and also couldn’t stand the Yankees. They were a like the equivalent of Man Utd in football. The team people would say they supported, because they won all the time.
@@Surfer041 not really. On The walkoff you can hear the bat break and all of his pitches were hitting the spots he normally hit to close games. Plain and simply the diamondbacks won the game. I’ll link a vid talking about it.
One out and bases loaded -- I'm going with double play depth. If @ double play depth, Jeter catches that looper and bases remain loaded with two outs. Classic WS, but many poor managerial decisions.
Mariano Rivera throwing the match away after tying the game ended up saving a life. Had the Yankees won, his teamate Enrique Wilson would have flown to the Dominican Republic after the team celebrated in their victory parade. Since they lost, he had to postpone his flight.
