I agree. They are also called grommets. If the hotel had awnings that might account for why so many have been found in the area... the fire would have released many of them to sink into the ground. ⭕⭕⭕
Love this one !! I agree, detecting for me is the same, as I am also taking care of family currently. Appreciate you sharing and fun finds. Thanks as always.

Hi Merrill I moved in with my father to look after him about 5 years ago.Sadly he passed away last May (91) but i have great memories and don't regret a second of it (Very hard work tho)..But i will say take all help that's offered and don't make the mistake that i did by letting the situation completely take over everything .I know from following your channel that you have a great family and they will be of great help to you .Happy hunting teach and the very best of luck to you.
Wet soil you will read deeper. And round shaped especially ring shaped objects often read higher numbers then they ought to for metal they are made of.
Hi, that's a King William the 3rd sixpence, not Edward 3rd, as that will be 1300s. This is in the late 1600s, which would make more sense with the times
Fully agree! Ive found stuff in wet soil (especially at night) with the manticore that it missed during the day in dry soil! I asked this question in a fb detecting group and most scoffed at it. Im a scientific person and i believe there is ample evidence to prove that moisture affects detecting ability. Thanks for the video!
Lancaster has had drought conditions since June... it's been very tough detecting. I'll get a signal that shows it's deep, I dig and find the target 3-4" down.
On my legend….yes, wet soil in the midwest goes deeper. I run the sensitivity a notch from the top, slow down my recovery speed and swing speed and it goes pretty deep, I use M3 frequently in those conditions(12inches +) In spring after a rain or fall after a rain are my favorite seasons to go.
Not only wet ground but cloud cover seems to help those deep signals pop! I get wet ground because I could see more conductivity but cloud cover idk? Heavy fog is the best in my experience
I've always found that moist soil gives better depth. Right after a good rain, when it's been long enough not to be muddy but nicely saturated is perfect. Better conductivity? I'm not a geophysicist or electrical engineer, so who knows? Its a thing, though. Easier digging too. I'm out west where much of the ground is like concrete.
Your 'bushings' are Tarp Grommets. My mother had a vanity set just like that silver pattern, it was a wedding present in England, 1940s, mirror, brush and clothes brush. first mystery object, a car thermostat part, 2nd one, a cartwheel hub band.
I'm ordering my first detector whenever it goes on sale next week. The Legend, on your advice. I've wanted a detector since I was a kid and I'm in my 30s now. I'm unreasonably excited, it's all I can think about. I'm on the west coast but I hope someday I can go out detecting with you, you seem like a great dude!
I learned a ton with this video. I'm in Winnipeg, Canada, so metal detecting season is done, but I plan on watching all your stuff, and learning as much as I can. Thanks !
the disc with the 3 holes at 16.43 is probably a diaphragm from a diesel engine governor.Would have a rubberised canvas backing that altered the fuel delivery depending on vaccuum created by the engines workload.Or it could be a mouse roullette wheel.(probably Fordson tractor, tho)
Mouse roulette......supposedly banned in NY state.....like jaywalking and finding gold......were supposed to turn it over to the police.......The mice pay no mind!!!
Wet soil does help. I found two silver dimes I didn’t pick up on before in muck at a park. Had to dig in a muddy pool per say but they finally came out. Nice silver. Would be fun to have carrying cool sizes.
This was a great video. I learn so much from you. Thank you for your willingness to share so much information. I had my first search this morning and loved it!
Especially on park baseball fields, When it has been raining for a full day , and there is a light mist in the air , I hit targets like crazy . Especially if the dirt is mushy . Awesome video . Question, how are you getting into dead horse bay lately ? I found the path near the signs all over growing high weeds , I had to walk up all the way to the bridge, then to the sand/ water and walk back ???? Mike Espo . Happy Thanksgiving. 🦃🍁
Merrill, i usually run sens at 82 to 87, depending upon soil conditions. Have had better iron discrim by running it lower than 90+. have fun brother, that's what it is all about!
Those are canvas rivets, the canvas would be doubled over and sown then you put in a series of rivets along the edge so a rope can be tied through the hole.
Merrill, what you are referring to as a bushing I have always heard referred to as a GROMMET (usually for a tarp, either canvas duck or in current times plastic).
As long as its not actively storming, I'm out detecting. Moist dirt is fine, but some sites are just pools of water 2" below the surface and more mess than locating targets in the slop.
Great content Merrill love the channel .. I believe those round things being call bushings are actually canvas tarp grommets like from big canvas tents . Hope this helps
@paulcoenen7918 6 inches, right below a 3 jnch thick root, i tought it was a nail since most of the time thats what I find below the roots in that area.
@retrodqfan That's an awesome find. I once detected a dime signal that I knew was shallow about 1 inch so I just quickly plunged my digger in and flipped over the soil to retrieve my clad dime only to realize it was a mint condition barber dime that was being pushed back up by a root. I say was mint condition because in my haste to get it out I put a big Ole scratch in the face with my digger, a hard learned lesson for sure. Anyway congrats on your find.
Hi Merrill, Most importantly, I hope all is going well with your father. I took care of my mother who had Alzheimers and know what it’s like to care for a parent. Thanks for making this video, the information you shared was helpful to me as I’m just getting back into the hobby.
Hey Merrill, I run my Legend on the beach at 25-26 (about 85%). I’ve heard it described as like not cranking your music volume up to max cause it doesn’t sound as good once you pass the sweet spot (and can blow out the speaker!) I rarely run any setting at its max. HH! Sam
Nice hunt nice finds. I run my ws6master sensitivity between 90 and 95 and ajudt my reactivity acorrding to area iam in. I only have 9 inch coil. The ws6master has found me my oldest coins. My mi6 pinpoter just arrived today. Thanks for posting hunt.
With my nox800 my sensitivity is almost always set at 20. I turn it down to 10 in wood chip filled playgrounds. Out in the woods I will try to run it as high as it can go, rarely am I able to go max of 25 with sensitivity.
I have tried many setting for ground balance. I have it off worked great had it on 90 worked Ok. I feel some days the magnetic fields are stronger in the earth. Also I try to balance the number so if the number is 85 I go two less 83 or 81. I do not use ground grab.
Have you ever dug at Fort Tryon Park, or Inwood Hill Park or High Bridge Park in Upper Manhattan near Fort George Hill? If you can, you should try it out. I’m betting lots of Colonial stuff, because it’s in the city, lots of woods, and no hunters.
Merrill, is there a setting on the Manticore or any other detector that will allow you to discriminate depth? I want to only dig signals 5 inches or deeper, I know I'll miss some good stuff. TY
I run my Deus2 at 85 to 87 sens first time at a place, then after the first time I raise it to 90 to 95. Then at least I have got most of the overload signals out of the ground and can go deeper. Cuts down on false signals FROM OVERLOADING. The bushings>? garage door bearings. The round piece with the tit in the middle,, glass side window (car) glass nut or retainer. The window regulator clips to that to raise and lower the window..... THEY still use these in some vehicles today. You told me right on the nine inch coil it is a blaster blows them targets out of the ground lol!!!!!! I like mine. Oh I have found something you may be interested in.... Put 3 coins on the floor penny, nickle, dime. they all read different numbers, ok, NOW SELECT a couple detectors with them all close together in a line sweep over them, with best settings, you will find the nickle signal numbers will show the nickle..... Then get out the ORX .LOL HERE IT COMES BROTHER.... Sweep over the same targets with it and the 6X9 H.F. Coil.......YOU MAY FIND THE RESULTS VERY INTERESTING. I did try this with the Deus 1 also didn't get the same results. Unreal but the ORX gives STABLE READOUT ON numbers and tones THE REST are going to show a nickle or a big target you wouldn't dig... I am a firm believer in the 6x9 coil As far as separation and as far as jewelry it's a freaking magnet.. The numbers on the ORX like I said something for you to look at.. Multi freq has nothing on this coil brother it is a stomper. I just bought the 9 inch hf coil too.......
New to metal detecting, Minelab Equinox 800 is on sale for $699 for BF, do you recommend it for beginner or is there something better at that price point?
I run my detector's sensitivity as high as it will go without generating false positive noise. If you hold the detector motionless and it's still beeping the sensitivity is too high. If you can hear aliens/ghosts talking through the speaker/headphones the sensitivity is too high.
Those bushings could be off old Canvas tents (military) , also called eyelets.
I agree. They are also called grommets. If the hotel had awnings that might account for why so many have been found in the area... the fire would have released many of them to sink into the ground. ⭕⭕⭕

I will say that yes, with my eqx800 I find more in wet soil than dry soil and I think it has to do more with depth.
Glad you aren't going anywhere Merrill! Since getting into this hobby, I feel the same way! There's no way I ever wanna quit!

My nox 800 with a 6 inch coil can find stuff my buddy missed with his dues 2. I've pondered manticore or dues 2 but the nox still produces
Full moon at night seems to produce better signals for me on the beach but it may just be a coincidence.

Wet soil is great,,but also makes deeper type nails small or big sound even better too,,still worth it to eek out a bucketlister.
Yes I wish I touched on iron in this video.
Hi Merrill, @ 11:13, that is what little is left of the chimney support for a table top oil lamp. Cool video! Thanks.

Great post again, like always!!!!! Thanks for the info, very interesting!!!! 👍👊
That site will definitely give you some experience in learning different sounds. I will try lowering sensitivity.
My best results for depth has always been frost out of the ground in early spring.
Thank you for the great knowledge, very thankful you share! I keep my sensitivity at 65-70, only want to dig 4" max!

It helps to detect deeper.

I run 85% sensitivity on my Fisher F-75. Sometimes, I will go higher in areas with very little trash.
Really great location and finds there! 👍🙋♀️🙋
got my first barber half yesterday in a square grid ive detected countless times, first time I detected it while raining yesterday

Yes Merrill an excellent find for the US. Brilliant.
An old padlock... COOL!
Yes .better conductivity.from my experience hunting in both conditions, the drier it is the worse your signals are

Such a wonderful hunt M. Good show brother 👍🕳️👨🏽🦯🌲🌲🌲🌲🌲🌲🌲🌲
Good day Buddy,
I run my Nox 600 at a sensitivity of 16 to 18, generally (out of 25).
Park detecting with the Manticore, I lower it to 16.
Yeah we noticed, we noticed a LOT!!!
I believe that the interesting peice of something was a lipstick tube..and I run sensitively at about half way..✌🇨🇦
Wow! Half way!
that button at1645 looks like a drill bit for grinding that has been worn down completely or was cut off for whatever reason.
Thanks for this video Merrill 👍

I’m afraid it’s not a King Edward III, it’s a William III milled silver sixpence 1672-1702
Yes William....I forgot to make that edit. I learned the sixpence was only minted 1695-1697.
I know the older whites I used to use freaked out in wet soil. The Deus2 I haven’t really been in the wet enough.

20-23 on the LEGEND
Check for year on wick turn knob on the oil burner
I like that lock... what's the patent date on it? It says right below the word GUARDIAN, but all I could make out was Jan. 31, not the year
Wow! I will check as soon as I get home. I didnt know that existed! I will post back here if I see anything.
Great finds. Great video!
The detector goes from 1 to 30 in Parks I run it around 24,25 and if I'm relic hunting it's 27,29 with the Legend.

Why does some silver items turn black and others look like silver?
Do you prefer the deus 2 over the manticore?
More manticore videos please 🙏
I think your “bushings” are actually grommets from an old canvas sail. That would explain why you’re finding so many of them too.
Merrill,
Can you please share your settings on the D2? Please and thank you.
Plain Vanilla. Deep HC but full tones. I adjust the reactivity accordingly. My sensitivity is usually low 90s. I adjusted the audio filter to 4.
Nice!

loved your video your awsome
Possibly grommets?
Thanks Matt
Go back in the spring, when the soil's juicy... you'll find the older stuff.
Three holed thing is a button hole medal, the back is missing.
Wow thanks for the ID
Merrill size matters!
Talk away my man...
is the duse 2 your favorte dectector now
Yes
Great hunt merrill. But there is no Garden variety silver, a Merc is a Merc is a Merc 😂
I'm usually at 91-93 in heavy iron I'll go 85-90
I set my sensitivity as higher as my reactivity goes down, but never higher than 96-97
I run my detector's sensitivity as high as it will go without generating false positive noise. If you hold the detector motionless and it's still beeping the sensitivity is too high. If you can hear aliens/ghosts talking through the speaker/headphones the sensitivity is too high.
Hey Merrill I seen the wheat you dug can you tell me how to remove the green from the penny? Thanks for the video buddy keep up the great work.
Allot of times when you remove the green by any means the coin underneath is corroded and you will see less detail.
I run my triple score on 11 or 12 sensitivity it's stable at 13cor 14 in my area but I see no need to crank it up like that
Can we use your crater beach program for inland wet or dry soil? ilike your vids
I wonder if detectors are affected at all my increased spare activity like flares and CME's?? Hmmm. 🤔
Did you pass on the site I rate metal detectors?
Looks like half of a spectical buckle
