    The Neapolitan Mastiff or Mastino / Mastini (Italian: Mastino Napoletano) is a large, ancient dog breed. This massive breed is often used as a guard and defender of family and property due to their protective instincts and their fearsome appearance.
    Despite centuries of popularity throughout Europe, this type of dog was almost lost after World War II. Soon after the war, Italian painter Piero Scanziani established a breeding kennel to turn the Mastiff-type dogs of Italy into a formal breed which was then named the Neapolitan Mastiff and English Mastiff was used to help in this process.

      I raised a male&female Neo. The male at 10 months weighed 143lbs . When I had to euthanize him at 9yrs he had lost weight down to 160lbs. The female suffered seizures at about 7yrs & lost she only weighed 130lbs. We got them at 8weeks & raised them indoors. I'm 71 now I still cry over them they were the best dogs just don't live long enough. I raised other breeds before the Neos had I known I would have only Neos. Loved them now I'm too old it wouldnt be fair if I got another then I died first Phillip

      their drawbacks, whether it be behavioral and physical, far outweigh what makes them a 'great' breed. Live short, suffer from a variety of health issues, despite training, I would still not trust them with strangers in the house, unless the master is present and they're very very very messy eaters.

    This is the only sight I've seen on the breed that truly talks about their temperament accurately.Although they are fantastic, fascinating and completely mesmerizing to own, you must be very careful who you let into their environment as they can be very aggressive. Nevertheless they are unlike any other dog you have ever met and a true challenge to own and an experience you will never forget.

    My english/neo mastiff male doesn't have an agressive bone in him and loves dog parks. He is always the alpha but doesn't need to fight others for it. He is smart and a doof at the same time. He has been socialized to strangers a ton since he was 10 weeks and is wonderful. Best dog i've ever had. Teaching my kids how to act was more difficult than teaching my dog. They mirror the energy showed to them. Keep the kids calm and quite and the dogs act the same way toward them.

    nice video. i think neos get a bad wrap. while they are overly protective if trained correctly they will do great at dog parks. My friend owns two and we live in Houston,Tx. During the summer time they stay in the house only coming out to use the restroom. They hangout outside mostly at night. They come over to my house and I have 5 dogs. They all get along great, but again early, socialization and constant reinforcment.

    We have a mastiff and this is so accurate. We should've done more research with mastiffs because for so long my other dog and her got into fights over dominance. We got an electric fence so we could just let them out so she didn't go on many walks. We took her to the dog beach not too long ago and she did great at first but then this one dog didn't want to meet her and they almost got into a fight and then she just got anxious because my family and I got anxious. Your emotions and actions can affect a dog so just act calm. Also whenever a new person comes to our house we just ignore her and the new person ignores her too and she does pretty well.

    • @MastinosDelManicomio
      @MastinosDelManicomio 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      This breed needs heavy socializing from a pup. They are not dog aggressive if they are socialized just like any other dog. We show our Mastiff's and also take them to beaches and others places even Trick or Treating and they do great its all how you raise them . We have a video that shows our big guy in Venice beach California with crowds of people. I cannot stress enough to socialize your dogs it is so beneficial to them and you.

    We adopted a female Neo that had been abandoned next door by a man who was getting a divorce. She was skinny and at first I was afraid of her because I didn't know what she was. She became the best, most gentle, smartest dog we ever owned. I think she loved us even more because we took her in. She did have some hip problems as she got older. Our Vet said he had never been bitten by a Mastiff. Many other dogs, yes. They are big, goofy dogs. Great with kids. They are large and need space, but they don't demand special attention. She slobbers a lot too. Be ready for that on your furniture and walls.

      Had this happen right in front of me around 10 years ago, some kind of mastiff and I was playing with it outside for a while and decided since I was thirsty he needs some too. Welp I was wrong, if any animal is overheated, especially to a high degree, don’t give it water right a way. Just let them cool down in a shady spot for at least 10-15 min.

    • @federicaxx9452
      @federicaxx9452 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      if the owner is aggressive the dog is aggressive . Rottweiler and Doberman aren't "bad" for instinct , people use them like guard . Neapolitan mastiff are perfect for personal protection . Since romans times were used to guard of homes or to fight in gladiatorial arenas . So , they can be really dangerous and aggressive if you use them likke guard . ut like doberman and rottweiler they can be "good" and "sweet" if you are good with them . In each chase they are really loyal with their owner .

    • @dlholmes111
      @dlholmes111 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would not call a neo dangerous to family, but can be dangerous to strangers that come into the home or yard. And some of the Neo types will easily kill a Rott if left in the yard with one of the same sex.
