    About:
This is the 3rd of a 21 stage tour a new bike , like the Tour de France. I point out what the manufacturers didn't do when it was built. Focusing on a lack of grease in the bottom bracket and severe consequences of no maintenance. I'll show you how and why you need to check your cassette to give you confidence in the safety of your new bike in 5-10 mins. This will also stop much bigger problems in the future. Each video shows a different problem and how to sort it out without completely pulling the bike apart.

Short but sweet.. Thanks for the important reminder to check these components (and for showing where to grease). These videos are fantastic!

My spokes were overtighened so they started to snap.

That can do it! If they were black it won't have helped... changing the colour messes with the molecular structure of the metal.

The only mechanic you can truly trust to take your safety seriously is yourself.

How to deal with movement in the cassette

    • @bicycleguru
      @bicycleguru  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

There are lots of potential culprits... lock ring needs tightening, cassette speed doesn't match max freehub capacity - fit spacer behind cassette, smallest cog isn't located properly would be the 1st things I checked...

Thank you. My first bike was purchased from Halfords (one of the biggest chains in the UK). My first bike came with a loose lock ring and the tooth on the smallest cog broke on my first ride. I didn't bother going back but I will never shop in that place again. The mechanics are inexperienced students working part time and wouldn't trust them with the mine or my children's safety.

Same here too, Halfords do not employ proper experienced mechanics.

My pleasure! Bike supermarkets are the bottom of mechanical pride and enforcement. Hopefully, some of them work it out and learn how to fix bikes properly.

100% don't assume factory torque is set... at least check the critical items.

Another area not to trust assemblers on is bearing pre-load. Whilst in most cases its merely a performance & premature failure issue, set bearing pre-loads yourself. In fact don't rely on other people at all, unless they are tip top, but who that is into anything at top level does?

Totally agree! Be the master of your own destiny and leave no one else to blame. That's the best thing my coach taught me about my bike. It's hard to accept mediocre when one does it themselves.

Bike I've ridden for five years arrived with everything loose
Headset, brakes, bottom bracket, pannier rack
I think it's because they put the wrong price on their website and I picked it up at cost
So they were spitting feathers as they built it for me 😂

Not unusual! Everyone is a bike mechanic, until they're not...
In fairness, the shops can't afford the time to get everything (anything) right even with decent mechanics.
Sounds like you made them pay 👍
