Listening again, I must say that this may be the most sublime interpretation and performance of this song that will never be equaled. The power, the sensitivity, the beauty that only Gordon MacRae offers us. At 89 years old and having heard all the so-called great singers, I must say that Gordon was unique and stands head and shoulders above all male singers I have heard..
What more can be said? Gordon MacRae was incomparable. A matchless full-bodied sound with warmth, beauty, taste, and an effortless technique that crooners like Sinatra and Crosby - while fine in their own right - could never emulate. And I say this with envy and profound appreciation as a professional singer myself. Thank you, Gordon.
Who are the deaf wonders who hit dislike? Unbelievable! This is a GREAT, in the fullest sense of the word, voice, and someone who knew how to use it as well. Just gorgeous.
OH MY GOD!!!! And this voice is/was REAL. Never another. Only Gordon. This piece is(but only w/ Gordon singing it) beyond words. It just goes through the body, the heart -- his crescendo !!!!!!!!!!! There are opera singers who could take lessons from him. I imagine him in heaven filling it w/ that incredible voice.
Thank you! I'm so glad you enjoyed it! I was blown away when I heard this version...his singing is so powerful, it gives me chills. Thanks so much for commenting! :)
TheSorrowfulFlower Thanks for your acknowledgement. I am a baritone so maybe I'm biased??!! I also love the controlto voice....The late spectacular Clara Mae Turner. Thoughts????
Ha! Yes, perhaps an understandable bias :) I've been told my grandmother had a beautiful contralto voice, but she didn't do much singing by the time I came around. I agree wholeheartedly with you about Claramae Turner, her version of You'll Never Walk Alone is exquisite. The sopranos I'm most familiar with, due to their work with Gordon on his Railroad Hour radio show (I've posted several on my other channel, LoveTheOConnor) are Dorothy Warenskjold, my favorite, as well as Dorothy Kirsten and Lucille Norman.
This is just Wonderful, Heather! I'm so happy to see this back up! Wonderful song so beautifully sung and the lovely Natalie Wood! It just doesn't get any better!Thank You so much! Jim
Thanks for posting. I really enjoyed watching the scene from Westside Story and listening to Gordon sing Somewhere! I wish he had starred in more movies.
Thanks for posting so many of my uncle's songs. Yes, he was my uncle, my mom's brother. I've heard him sing this one in the house, so I'm inclined to think it was one of his personal favorites. Will never forget him belting out "I'm Getting Married In The Morning", from My Fair Lady, on the morning of his wedding to Aunt Liz. I thoroughly enjoy reading the comments from fans far and wide in your posts about him, a rare thing on TH-cam these days. Thanks again.
So nice to hear from one of his family members, and it's great to hear that this was probably one of his personal favorites. I've been a fan of your uncle's since I was 5 years old and watched him ride through the 'Oklahoma!' corn in the 80s. It's been a real treat for me to hear from so many other people who love him, too, and have so many wonderful things to say about him. The biggest treat has been your comment. Thanks very much, Jon.
It's so nice to hear from a member of Gordon's family, thanks for writing this. I knew he had a sister as I've seen a photograph from when they were children. As I live in England I never got to see Gordon unfortunately as I did Frank Sinatra, Johnny Mathis and a few other greats, but for me, nobody sang like Gordon MacRae, I've collected every recording I possible can including the Railroad Hour shows. Hard to pick a favourite recording but I'd have to stick with the first two I heard when Carousel came out when I was a kid so they would be If I Loved You and the Soliloquy. His version of Danny Boy is so moving as well.
You must be so proud to have Gordon as your uncle, As a professional singer myself I gladly admit that he was the greatest male singer I have ever heard - past or present. He was not just a crooner like Sinatra or Bing Crosby. His was a legit full-bodied near operatic sound that was powerful, rich, beautiful, and effortlessly produced with a matchless technigue. I listen again and again to his numerous performances and sit in awe at his rare talent.
Marvellous. Thanks! Three of my favourites in the one video. Gordon, Natalie, and this song. That aint bad! And haven't heard him do this one b4 either.
Yay! So glad to see this back up. :) Such a beautiful video! Gordon's voice is so perfectly complicated by the clips you chose. Thank you for putting this together!
This is my favorite song of all time. I’d love to add it to my library of music, and I’ve tried to find it but have been unable to. Anyone have any suggestions on how to obtain ir?

I'm on a MacRae binge right now; love his voice! As for the clips here, I always tell myself Tony's just going to the hospital...where Riff is. lol!

Gordon was and still is unequaled as a baritone who mastered his craft beyond expectations.
I couldn't agree with you more, Dal. Thanks for watching and commenting :))

P.S. Not to negate or forget about all those spectacular sopranos.

Wonderful Gordon MacRae from Oklahoma. CARROUSEL.

@Jymster46 Thank YOU so much, Jim! I have to admit, I'm awfully proud of this one. I'm delighted you like it! :)
Gordon MacRae's recording of "Somewhere" for Capitol is a classic. (I wonder if John Raitt ever recorded this song?)
Gordon MacRae is on par with Frank Sinatra. Truly.
Natalie Wood - now that was one beautiful woman!!! Gone too soon!
She was murdered.
I liked Frank what he did and the way he did it,but he wasnt right for Billy Bigelow, thank god Gordon got it.
John Raitt actually should have done it, he did Billy on stage.
Gordon was PERFECTION!
I'm not sure when.
how can I share this on FB??
Click "share" under the video, then the FB button. Thanks for watching :))
When did he record this
