As a singer myself I must say that Gordon Macrae is simply the best male popular singer perhaps of all time with a beautiful, powerful flawless technique from top to bottom and a beautiful tone that will never be equaled.
Gordon just makes singing seem so easy and natural. He is such a pleasure to watch and listen to. These are the kind of men that should be starring in film adaptations of musicals.
GORDON MacRae WAS THE MOST UNDERRATED SINGER INTHE LATE FORTIES AND EARLY FIFTIES,YET HE WAS A GREAT SINGER!.......HIS VOICE WAS TOPS AMONG THE MALE SINGERS!!............
I’m 31 years old and I remember watching musicals like Oklahoma, state fair, sound of music, King and I and others and falling I love with music. I wish music like this was popular today. No offense to music today at all. I just love getting lost in a song and being took places I’d never thought possible. We need to get back to music like this
I have just rediscovered this fantastic singer. The VERY BEST from his era... I love this part "...I'd go..." into the new phrase "...longing to tell you..." What breath control. Very under-rated! Love him!
Cant believe someone could possibly give this the thumbs down! I think the reprise of If I Loved You in Carousel by Gordon is the greatest musical joy of my life. Gordons voice is to die for!
The end is rushed because he is not reaching the note and it is a bit tight and he already cracked a bit "How I Loved You" at the end, each note should be held legato long but he is squeezing it out rushing. Not like the movie version, go listen to it. In a movie you can record it in pieces because it is lip-synched anyway. This is also lower than the actual key. It was great up until he had to go high at the end. He was already drinking a lot by this time and maybe that had something to do with it.
@@miyoshiumeki Agreed. He’s at his peak in the unmatched film version Also in this earlier version th-cam.com/video/U7dF3hQi4WI/w-d-xo.htmlsi=8Vhmv7rZM3c3uh14
I've loved this song my whole life. I was in the school band in the 1970's, our director had this music and wanted us to play it. I was so excited because I played b flat baritone so I had the solo. My late mom told me how Sinatra was considered for the roll. He couldn't have matched Gordon's rich voice. Simply beautiful.
Yeah, Sinatra was just a crooner. He didn't have the power and technique to sustain notes. I've heard Sinatra's recording of the Soliloquy from Carousel. It was pathetique.
Outstanding. What a handsome man with a magnificent voice. Great song. R&H knew how to write and Gordon MacRae could sing their songs so well. That is why he was chosen to be Curly in Oklahoma and Billy Bigelow in Carousel. RIP Godon McRae.
Great breath and voice control at 1:15 - 1:23. He seamlessly sustains the note (C natural) "...I'd go..." into the new phrase "...longing to tell you..." Just beautiful.
What a beautiful song. Gordon, you have sung it better than any singer. And how I loved you in “Carousel”. Shirley Jones and you were such fine actors in that movie!!!
I remember waiting in the food line at Briar Cliff in the 60’s, Judy Schmitz used to play and sing If I Loved You.. it was always such a beautiful treat!
Learning this at the moment and classics like this for nursing homes 🏠 Love these beautiful Old Fashioned best music ever Sadly music as totally lost its way today What a tremendous voice on this Gentleman
Loved him as a teen ager, came across. The Movie Arabia ....... with Debra K, brought back how much I loved his voice, and him. Need to buy some of these albums. Thank you for having them available! WONDERFUL, I can’t stop playing them!
I think Michael Buble has a similar face to the late, great Mr. McRae. So glad Gordon got the lead in the movie 'Carousel' instead of the originally intended Sinatra. That is a MAGNIFICENT cinematic masterpiece thanks to the performances of Gordon and Shirley Jones.
A great voice singing great American music. Enjoy it my friends because it's gone, Singers like this are so rare and songs like this ,well just look at what's being written. Rap! It's not even music.
@@jackoconnell9428 From what I've read, John Raitt would get the lead in Oklahoma or Carousel and was not reliable because of his drinking issues. Gordon Macrae would be called in to replace him. It happened more than once and the 2 men were rivals.
I didn't know about John Raitt and booze either, just Gordon, which is common knowledge, although you can't tell from this video. What a voice, better than Raitt I think.
Have you not ever had heard Mario Lanza sing this song and all of the other Great American Songbook selections? His baritone voice was better than any other baritone I've ever heard, as was his tenor voice.
@@joanschilleci7564 Mario Lanza was NOT a Broadway/pop star. He had a great voice, but read what I wrote, please. However, with songs like this, no male singer beats MacRae. No one. Furthermore, I do not get your baritone/tenor reference. Lanza was an Italian tenor. Period.
If Frank Sinatra hadn’t quit the show carousel when he found out, he would have to sing it twice we would’ve never known how great Gordon McRae was and we didn’t miss Sinatra!🎉
That was his goal in the beginning, pity it never happened. On his long-running radio show 'The Railroad Hour' he once did an adaptation of 'Madama Butterfly' as Pinkerton. Very abbreviated, in English and of course transposed down. Heard it many years ago and I've been trying to locate it ever since.
The perfectly pitched American male singer. He was born at just the right time too. I don't get why he never had a hit record. Maybe it's a case of management not doing their job 100 percent because he's better than Bing and waaay more appealing than Frank so...??
Stunning, unique voice that can't be copied, like Sinatra and Karen Carpenter too. So unique. I can't listen to anyone but him sing this song. Sadly, the orchestration of this version of the song is dreadful.
Not quite as great as his performance for the film (recorded five years earlier), but the greatest ballad ever written found a perfect partnership with Gordon and Shirley.
G.M. is great...but he cracked on the hi E natural...dropped the note too soon; he covered the space with an extra word "oh, /How I loved" ("oh" is not the original lyric), and unsure snuck yet another a breath before the high F, and struggled again cutting it short....This can happen in a LIVE performance..and he covered like pro...my respect is not diminished...Listen again...the climax really falls apart. Listen to him in the Movie with Shirley Jones...he is truly stellar. (and younger...)....4 years early....this is the perfect performance...th-cam.com/video/U7dF3hQi4WI/w-d-xo.html
Yeah... the 4 or 5 years had nothing to do with it. For the movie he was lip syncing to a recording he and Shirley had made in the studio where he could have sang it over and over until perfect. Live you don't have that luxury.
Who didn't have an absolute crush on this man?
As a singer myself I must say that Gordon Macrae is simply the best male popular singer perhaps of all time with a beautiful, powerful flawless technique from top to bottom and a beautiful tone that will never be equaled.
God made Mr. MacRae and broke the mold. We'll never see or hear the like again.
The great Gordon MacRae is buried in my hometown of Lincoln, NE.
Wondwrful. This is the best song in Carousel, and he does it justice.
Just listening to this now OMG what a voice love from Australia 2023
I've listened to this song since I was a child. It still gets me. It's one of R&H's greatest!
This man had such a beautiful voice, pity he is not around anymore. Thank you for this video.
Utterly sublime rendition of a glorious classic !
A song and a singer made for each other. He was perfect for those Rogers and Hammerstein musicals, great voice and handsome. Just wonderful.
Gordon just makes singing seem so easy and natural. He is such a pleasure to watch and listen to. These are the kind of men that should be starring in film adaptations of musicals.
Gordon did the Movie Versions.. because his Voice had that True, Undeniable Depth & Beauty. 💯 Other men sang it wonderfully..but Gordon was magic! ✨
Only Gordon should ever sing this song! Chills!
What a voice. It just soars and soars.
