  • lyrics here....
Why do they think up stories that link my name with yours
Why do the neighbors gossip all day behind their doors
I know a way to prove what they say is quite untrue
Here is the gist A practical list of "don'ts" fer you
Don't throw bouquets at me Don't please my folks to much
Don't laugh at my jokes too much People will say we're in love
    Who laugh at your jokes
Don't sigh and gaze at me Your sighs are so like mine
Your eyes mustn't glow like mine People will say we're in love
Don't start collecting things Like what
Give me my rose and my glove
    Sweetheart they're suspecting things
People will say we're in love
Some people claim that you are to blame as much as I
Why do you take the trouble to bake my fav'rite pie
Grantin' your wish I carved our initials on that tree
Just keep a slice of all the advice you give so free
Don't praise my charm too much Don't look so vain with me
Don't stand in the rain with me People will say we're in love
Don't take my arm to much Don't keep your hand in mine
Your hand feels so grand in mine People will say we're in love
Don't dance all night with me 'till the stars fade from above
They'll see it's alright with me People will say we're in love

I can't count how many times my partner and I have sung this to each other, walking home from a circuit party or night clubbing, at 5 or 6 am. The lyrics are so uncanny in their fit for us, esp. the last two lines, after a long night of dancing and fun. We've been together 23 years now, so I guess that shows how powerful and meaningful this song can be...

My parents took me to all the Rogers and Hammerstein movies of the era and others like them. I grew up thinking that life and loves were supposed to be this way. Life does not have movie endings. Only versions of them. Girls of the 70s did not appreciate being serenaded to "On The Street Where You Live" and the like.

Oscar Hammerstein said, you can't have characters sing "I love you" in the first act of a musical because the audience isn't ready to hear that yet. So they have to approach it indirectly, like People WILL SAY we're in love, or IF I loved you, or We could make believe I loved you.

Apparently she even admitted in an interview back in the day that she had a bit of a crush on him, lol... then they got matched again in Carousel! So those looks on her face of admiration & day dreaming are definitely genuine, lol. So cute! Imagine having a crush on a fellow actor, then you're placed in a movie opposite of him that has a love story involved between you two... I really can't think of anything more romantic, than being able to sing with someone that you're in your feels about, even as a crush!

It's just the passing of time but I imagine you mean Oklahoma! Carousel and The Music Man. Some of us still remember and I'd never argue with you over those three movies. Shirley had such a beautiful voice and as for Gordon MacRae, I think he was Hollywood's finest male actor/singer ever, but rock n' roll and TV killed all their movie careers. Such a shame as Shirley and Gordon had just hit their stride, but we still have these classic films thank goodness.

There are stars who have great voices today too.....The problem is we don`t have songwriters who can write lyrics which make sense , or who have such a limited vocabulary that if they can`t find a rhyming word they put in "Oohs and Ahs" to fill up the space.

At age 65 in 2013, I listen sadly to this music as if it is a museum piece reflecting a world of rapture and romance that no longer exists. The new generation does not even begin to know what they are missing. This song says everything worth saying about life and if we would accept it as reality greater than the one we live in, we would be joyful

From childhood all men have to be taught to respect all women, as my mother did with myself. I work 7 days a week. When I get home, I mop. sweep, do the dish's, take out the trash and do my laundry. I help my wife a lot. My mother taught me that not all women are alike. So please don't think all men are alike.

also the romance and passion was the same... how could that change? people are just more open if they don't like something... people don't have to stay married if they don't want to and maybe less people might care what the neighbors are thinking
there would be no difference between 150 years ago and today, except that your wife would have not as many rights and now there's computers and stuff
