I was a plasterers labourer when I left school for 2 years. Never got to touch a trowel once as the plasterer didn't want another skimmer he only wanted a labourer. I left eventually and went down a different path. Worked my arse of for 15 years in a dead end job after a few years of this and that here and there. Was being paid 60 quid a day for all day 6 days a week. One day at age 40 my partner and I employed a plasterer for a small wall skim over. We paid him 380 for one days work and bare in mine my wages were 360 take home a week was a lot to pay out. The job he done was shockingly bad. I brought a few trowels and other tools and redone it better myself. Gave up my job at age 41 and decided to do plastering. Watched TH-cam videos and realised I knew most of what was being shown and got a bit of confidence. Decided to replaster my house from scratch. Ripped all the plaster and backing off and started to learn how to do hardwall and bonding and multi. It was a nightmare. Now age 45 I'm a plasterer with my own business. I got all my own jobs and learned as I went. Started on 200 a day and went up quick. I charge between 200 and 380 a day now mostly being 250 to 275 a day. You have to do the work and put the effort in. Take the wins and the losses but wow the life is amazing compared to being a yard boy in a builders merchants loading peoples cars feeling like a looser to people being so grateful for the work you do. Be clean. Be honest. Work hard. Never stop learning more.

Hats off to you, I've been plastering 46 years now straight out of school at 15 and like you said, work hard be polite and make sure the customer his happy and you reap the rewards, it can be physically demanding but I've never seen financially a poor plasterer who knows his trade. 5 and a half years left now.

I used to be a plasterer back in the 90s
Got in to window cleaning and started my own business
Now 30 years on I run a cleaning business doing everything exterior including roof cleaning etc but don’t do it myself just the office side and do plastering for myself a few times a week for my own extra cash
Can charge reasonable rates without being extortionate and it all is extra
Mortgage just about paid so looking in to selling up and just doing a bit of plastering for myself and only 50
Definitely good money to be made
Easily a couple hundred a day self employed without rushing your arse off
    Keep it up fella

I won the extra mile award for good attendance and willing to learn more things than the rest whilst still in full time work. I also won the Principal's award for a render project I did for the Coronation.
I've loved the course, I scored the only distinction in the theory exam, the practical and overall results aren't until next month. I feel ready to now tackle my own house on my days off.

Great video my man! The way I see it, if you're booked up for 4 or 5 months, you're doing something right. As a decorator, I've stopped quoting for jobs. My existing clients are my most precious clients and half my work comes from them. They know I'll turn up when I say I will, and they will get a quality job. They don't bat an eye at my day rate, and I save them and me from the hassle of the quoting process, when someone always loses out.

We used to do alot of solid plastering plus everything else but it sounds like its mainly skimming now. The trade seems like its been de skilled alot maybe because it has to be as noone wants to spend 5 years learning everything when you can learn to skim in 6 months and call yourself a spread.

Covered in crap all day. And you can never stop. Once you put it on the wall. It’s just continuously ongoing. I’m studying the knowledge now. How long did your old man plaster for ? I'm £150 as a painter Decorator as most good tradesman can demand that, tbh i wouldn't get out of bed for less, good tradesman are very hard to find, you might get cheaper just never knock back a good tradesman for somebody cheaper then when it goes wrong & has to be put right, ask them to sort out the mess, as it's an insult, i get pissed off when they argue a price then when i say i can save you half the money spending on paint they insist instead of using Farrow & Ball, colours can be made exactly the same but at half the cost, don t argue the price then spend £100 on 5 Litres of emulsion

Great video mate I’m in a similar position at the moment I’ve just turned 20 and can comfortably board and skim a bathroom out in a day or prep a lounge one day and skim the next but in sun contracting work from a company and there limiting me to what my wage is because of my wage even though like you said there’s people at the company who are 30+ and I know that my work is better quality and cleaner I take more pride in what I do what’s your advice going forward Joel I’m in Leeds too so would be great to be working along side yourself I feel in taking the steps you took in your life and it’s inspiring ☑️
