When I pull out my Duo in public, I feel important. It makes me look high class and wealthy. When people see me using this unique device, it affects their brain to the point they have to get up and leave out of pure jealousy because they cannot compute such a device's existence.
I can definitely say the same with the LG V50/G8X/V60/Velvet with its respective Dual Screen case and the LG Wing 5G. Those two devices bring much more attention than my foldable screen Samsung phone. Not that it matters anymore since I have sold that Samsung phone.
Because of this video I purchased Duo 1. Updated it to 12L and I'm blown away how good it is. I found it slightly used for $270 at a local phone shop. Thanks for the video, super helpful.
Now if only we could get the likes of MKBHD, The Verge and LMG to give Duo a genuine re-evaluation now that so much of the software experience has improved.

I use a Duo 1 (Personal phone) & a Duo2 (Business).... I could never go back to a "Normal" phone.... have 2 displays available (really 4 displays!) is just a game changer for me... People always ask about the device when I am out... and I always say... "As a phone.... not so good.. better phones on the market.... as a device I carry with me all the time.... simple great.... thanks for always keeping your views on this device level... you point out the good, the bad and the ugly... but you are honest ... others out there seems to use the device alot but just are always so negative .... thanks again
Hi Shane, been watching your vids for some time. I love the fact that you occupy a space in the tech world, that is not covered by most reviewers. Now, regarding the Duo 1, your ending comments is so spot on. Buy it as an ebook reader! That is what I did, and it has replaced my Kindle and iPad. I've had so many people ask me about it. And yes the software is freaking awesome now. I don't know if you have noticed how the camera app now behaves? By default it opens up the front camera, but just folding back the screen, automatically launches the rear camera. This is WAY better than the previous implementation, when you had to double the folded screen to launch the camera. Well done MS!! I can't wait for Duo 3 next year!!
I have the first Surface Duo and it is a terrific device after all those updates. And at the current prices it is a no brainer for everyone that is a geek. Even the camera is decent after 12L. It makes me think about getting the Duo 2 as my main phone. But that is hard to come by for less than 800€ even used...
Shane, I was talking to a friend of mine yesterday about how I was so blown away with the introduction of the original Duo that I bought an Axon M in order to get used to the dual screen form factor (there's actually no comparison) before the Duo was released. Since owning the Duo, I don't even consider upgrading to anything other than maybe a Duo 2. But that camera hump is a huge deterrent for me to upgrade. The Duo does at least 90% of what I would need the Duo 2 to do and it folds cleanly in both directions. Sure, it would be nice to have a camera on the outside of it, but I don't need all the additional lenses adding girth to the device. I've actually found some mini wireless cameras that I can use with my duo when I need to take pictures. Right now, I have no complaints about the software. I really hope MS can figure out how to make the next Duo as thin as the first.
The biggest reason I love duo2 is because I no longer need a laptop or a computer to do 90% of what I needed a computer for. And the combining a phone and computer has been my dream ever sence as a kid I saw the movie 2001 a space odyssey. Microsoft rules!!
I love my Duo 1 - I have two of them (one in case the other one breaks) and as you said, I use mine as a reader, as a google search device, and things like that, because it's got the bigger screens. I am now daily driving a Galaxy Fold 4, but using that, and getting used to that camera bump (after having a flip for so long) is seriously making me think about buying the Duo 2 again. I doubt I would ever want to be without a Duo in some shape or form, and I will always love the screen ratio of the first Duo - it just works for me. Love it, and love your content, thanks. Watching this reminded me to update my Duo to get the lovely new features, which I got lol. Am looking forward to seeing what they do with a Duo 3 :) :) :)
I just updated mine. I got one cheap on Woot and have been using it as a note taking device for my grad school classes. So far it's been pretty sweet. I'm hoping for a super polished Duo 3 whenever it launches.
WHen you mentioned kindle, it made my eyes go wide open. I was just using Kindle on the device, and I think it's a whole lot better than any available kindle device. It split screens giving you an open book with page turn animations. Good stuff.
Been watching all your surface duo videos for the past 48h, load of amazing content! Just ordered mine (sealed, 256gb from a renown retailer) for £350. Receiving it Tuesday, feeling great about it 👌
Bought one off a.azon for Christmas for myself. Plan on using it as a mini PC for college essays and stuff. I daily drive an lg wing and have always loved dual screen phones. I think for $300 getting an 855 chipset with AMOLED panels is a crazy good deal. Great videos about it from you as well!
I have been an early adopter since the days of Windows CE and using a CF cellular card to make phone calls. I have been salivating since the first Duo was launched but waited until now to pull the trigger. I just picked up a brand new Duo 2 online from Best Buy here in Canada for $949 CAD with 256GB. Not sure how they have any but it arrived in original packaging. I added 12L during set up, added the necessary apps from the Play Store and have not had one issue with it in the last week!
I've had my Duo 1 for several months now and I love the form factor and what this thing does well. It is not my primary phone mainly because of the camera but it is a solid secondary device. I hope Microsoft sticks with it as they do have a history of jumping ship on a whim. Great video!
This was the OS Microsoft should have released at launch of Duo1. Previous updates introduced new bugs. I have Duo1 and this update really shines. I hate the huge camera bump and hope they do something about it for the next one.
I would've stuck with my original DUO from the beginning, but it dropped too many times unfortunately... I since got the DUO2 and absolutely love this! I still have have OG, with the hopes that I can get working some day.
I bought it still with Android 10 last year, sold my S21 base and went in. I fell in love with it from the very first announcement trailer. I saw all the reviews, good and bad and all things said dont buy it. It has been my main device ever since, Ive seen it evolve, GCAM made it possible to still have a decent camera for most situations. I want to buy the Duo 2 and I hope the device continues to exist because I love the form factor. Also made it possible to discover you and you became my number most viewed tech youtuber this year, and not just Duo related.
Great to hear that you've been happy with it, having owned S21 especially. For most, it may seem like an odd decision... until they've used Surface Duo themselves. Just got one recently as well (1st gen); considering selling S21FE.
Duo one is a steal at $400 for 256Gb. I'd love to see the next gen come with an offering sans camera, larger battery, and a well optimized midrange processor, 60hz & 2k screens. Make it an amazing multimedia device
I have had both Duo and Duo 2, the strides Microsoft has made is amazing!!! I run 2 phones pixel 7 pro and Duo 2. by far the Duo is my favorite. I love this device!!!! it's such a pleasure to use and multitask on. Microsoft has got a brilliant idea and a piece of gold in the Duo line. I love having 2 separate screens
The 12L upgrade for the OG Duo is really a nice update… wow does it run smoother and without that annoying half second delay before the screen is usable. Currently the Duo is the ONLY reason I have not moved to iPhone… You hear that Microsoft? Keep up the great work!
I just got my Duo 1 and am mightily impressed. Still getting used to all the extra screen real estate, and the 12L update is very good. More than worth the $320.
I still use Duo 1 as my only phone and it has become really good. It's a very exceptional phone now, but I do still have one major problem with it. I don't know if many other people have this or if it's improved on Duo 2. Very commonly when I have it in phone mode it will spontaneously switch to book mode so that both screens are on despite it being open all the way. When this happens, the touch screen is almost completely unresponsive. It can happen while in an app or while on the home screen. It seems to mostly happen if I unlock the screen while it's already opened to phoned mode. It's easily fixed by quickly going to book mode and then going back to phone mode, but it is a major annoyance. If this were fixed, the phone would be 11 out of 10 for me. Would love to hear if anyone has suggestions to deal with this and also if it's a problem that's reduced with Duo 2.
Still rocking by Duo 1 until I can pick up Duo 2 inexpensively. The Duo 1 works great with 12L. Windows Central mentioned this vid twice during their podcast today. Keep up the fantastic work!
I did really like the concept of surface duo when it was released two years ago, however the price tag at that time stops me buying it, too expensive. But I just got one at $350 at amazon and will be delivered tomorrow, can't wait to hold it in my hand. Will not use it as a phone, but a tablet to view two apps at the same time and probably take notes. Great video, thanks.
I did the same. And now it's my daily driver. It can do it all except take photos worthy of saving. No problem taking pictures for work purposes but not for private use. So usually when I go on holidays do I feel the phone is lacking. So now I'm waiting for a good deal on the Duo 2.
I asked Shane which one I should buy 1 or 2. He said Surface Duo 1 as a companion device. Surface Duo 2 as a daily driver. I bought Surface Duo 1 because of the price on Amazon. I use Surface Duo 1 as my daily driver. I love it. I love holding it. It works amazing. 12L is amazing on it. I ignore the glitches and little bugs. I have Z Fold 4 too and it has glitches and bugs. I love it too. Surface Duo 1 is my favorite. My Mint Mobile Sim lives in Surface Duo 1....
I started using duo 1 as a daily driver but I have it paired with a Samsung Galaxy watch 4 for calls, texts, want good navigation. The watch makes the phone so much more easier to use. I'm scared of dropping it, so it's in an enclosed OtterBox case in my pocket at all times when I'm in public.
This reminds me of the video game industry. Early release, and fix it on the way lol. All jokes aside, it's great to see such a unique phone get love. I've recently been switching phones lately and the duo 2 stays in the rotation as a main device. Currently have a Xperia 1 iii to compensate for the lack of camera. Working out great 👍
I just downloaded this update a few days ago and it even fixed a flickering green screen issue I had with the second screen. I thought the fingerprint sensor was completely broken because it would just never work and now everything works flawlessly again.
I just buy my second duo. The first one I’ve returned because I didn’t like at first. The last one costs me around $300 and I love it. I have been an Apple user for years, but now I’m thinking seriously moving to Surface, I want a Surface go too, if they can work together it’s going to be a good choice.
I have been using my surface duo as my work daily driver for the last year it's a fantastic device especially since the screen real estate has dug me out of trouble where I'm on a call and someone wants information I can use the second screen to get it for them ... Also as not many people have actually seen the device I regularly get asked what it is
The surface duo 1 I bought this month is my first ever Microsoft phone. I'm very impressed with the build quality and how well the software is working. Although it's too big to be practical as standalone phone for usability; I have it paired to my Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 and it's solved the practicality issues. Now I can answer calls and text without a big phone taking up one or both of my hands.
Agreed, I just dragged my SD 1 out after the update. I was a launch pre-order customer and I stuck with it for 6 months then I had to go back to a "regular" phone (S21 Ultra). I decided to give it another try with the update. Holy cow! It is actually functional! So, now with the already good design and hardware, we have software that makes this thing really good. I'm going to daily driver it and see how it goes.
When I first was encountered with Duo I was skeptical. And then about a year later they had a special where Microsoft was giving it at a half price and I pick one up at 750. The software at that time was so buggy I couldn't use it as daily driver and so I returned it. And then about 6 months later I saw it on sale I picked it up about 400 and right now I'm just using it as you describe a secondary device to use as a eBook as well as your surfing and just playing around with it.
I really like 12L on my Duo 2, but have not gotten it yet on my AT&T Duo 1. There are a couple of things that I don't like with the update, but it's nice to see Microsoft sticking with it.
The Duo 1 has once again become my primary device. I use it for business and after the last update of Android 12L; this device seamlessly works with Windows. An outrageous camera array is not needed for work. Glad I bought extra bumpers and a custom leather case that also holds the pen.
i love my surface duo, i just wish it was a little smaller, like 10-20% smaller, that way itd be a bit more pocketable, thats my only issue at this point, especially since i have a surface pro and the pen works on it
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏the narrative would have been so different if it launched like this as you said. so so happy with it, they stuck with it, stuck with their flow, uncle panos must be so proud.
I thought about ordering a Surface Duo before I got my Z Fold 4 but was always worried about it being older tech. I'm glad to see Microsoft really keeping up with it, especially with the Duo 2 out for over a year now
I agree. I love my SD1. And you're right, it definitely turns heads. No one knows what it is, and almost every time I pull it out, someone asks about it.
Received the 12L update and reset phone... Original Duo... Tried opening the "files" app and found it was missing from apps list. I went to setting... Apps... Found it there... But no options to open, force close, or clear storage... I used the three dot menu after clicking on it and Uninstalled updates... The Files App now working.
I got a Duo a few months and loved it, returned it and got Duo 2 when the price went down for the specs and horsepower and camera setup....but now I want a Duo 1 again just for fun. 😆
I'm having freezing on certain apps like trading view and Chrome. It's like touch response goes out but I can drag down from top. Also keyboard occasionally opening being apps. Still much improvements. Happy they applied 12 on it. Great phone and lots of attention in public still. Everyone asks what phone is that, it's so cool.
I am shocked. This is the first Microsoft mobile device that I have owned has actually improved over its lifetime while receiving 2 O/S upgrades. 100 % agree with the what if today’s Duo was Day One Duo. Would have caused a shift in the market
I got my duo 2 a little over a month ago cuz I got a good deal secondhand and I was initially planning to use it alongside my sony xperia 1 iv but I'm noticing I keep using it more and more as my main phone. My only two complaints are the camera (which is the main reason I still keep my sony around and tend to take that with me if I need to choose) and the battery life isn't great. But I can live with thf battery life since I always have a have a charger on me. Just really really wish they would be more a camera phone that can compete with my Sony, but other than that it's amazing, it's A real joy to use
I just picked up a duo 1 for international travel, I hope I will be satisfied since I normally run with iPhone (since original) I haven't used android products for a LOOOOONG time.
My only gripe with the Surface Duo is the adhesive for the bumpers peel away and rip too easily. I'm trying to find a good case alternative but can't find anything. Other than that I love my phone!
Android 12L and previous updates have made my experience with my Duo2 enjoyable. Considering it carries the Surface name, I didn't really believe they would abandon the device. I just remembered what the original Surface was like. A device I still own, but urgently stuck in a boot loop. Lol
People have never seen this phone before I pull it out. And when they see it they immediately ask me questions about it. I love this phone. Allows me to do some actual work when away from my computer.
I rarely take my computer out the house with me now. This phone has completely changed my life because it's made everything simpler. In addition to that, I have everything I need on me at all times, so I'm more productive and maintain a higher professional level because I have professional level equipment on me at all times.
I love it! It's my second device so not my primary phone. But it's my favorite, esp to do work instead of using my big ass laptop. And yeah i feel like a boss bitch when i break it out in places... People literally have no idea what it is and are blown away by it... Literally my favorite thing! Love your videos🙏🏼🤘🏽
*Since posting this there have been many reports of bugs for other users and even a few for myself. Check here to see more:* th-cam.com/video/LLBRN0UjEuA/w-d-xo.html If you want to buy Surface Duo, please consider using my link to support the channel: amzn.to/3Ng7iwZ For clarity, when I said that Microsoft worked on Android for 6 months before shipping doing I was being mostly hyperbolic. They made the move from Andromeda OS to Android in early 2019 and shipped Duo in late 2020.
Am still on Android 11 on my Duo 1 (ATT version), ATT hasn't delivered an update yet :( Even so at the current Android version my Duo runs like a champ and as my 2ndary device I use it a lot and really love it.
I love my Surface Duo through all the aggravation's. I have had so many people ask questions about it when I take it out to use. Most are surprised and think it is really impressive.
I got the Duo as my back up phone and to play around with since the price was so incredibly low. There are 2 things that puzzle me. First, why doesn't Microsoft run windows 11 on this device natively? Do they realize what a market they'd have? And two, why hasn't Microsoft or independent case manufacturers design a good case that would protect the device while making it perform without sacrificing some of its features? The only option one has, is a pouch type case which means you've got to take the Duo out of your pocket, then out of your pouch and then it has zero protection?
Great video. Thanks Shane. Just for a little context, Microsoft has been working with Android for years, even with its previous partnership with Cyanogen, it's efforts with linking Android with Windows, it's work with Samsung, and even many of MicrosoftnGarage efforts. This a may not have been Duo specific, but I did want to add that context that Microsoft has been working with Android longer than the six months you referenced. I sure you likely meant something else, but some viewers may take the statement on face value not knowing this broader context. 👍🙂Keep those videos coming man👍🙂🙂
What i was referring to was the timing from when Duo went from Andromeda to Android and then shipped. Them working with Android isn't quite the same as developing their own Android device and the fact that they did so for such a brief time before shipping it led to a lot of issues that they have now largely fixed. My statement of "6 months" was a hyperbolic one though. Depending on who you ask, they made the move in early 2019 and shipped in late 2020.
My main concern is always the slight issues with touch input. I don't think they have fixed all those issues yet, even though it's much better, I've still heard it still has a ways to go, and I don't think it can be fixed due to driver issues. Also, no 90hz and no 5G is the biggest thing for me. If it had 90hz and 5G I'd probably rock it for years, or want to. I'm a tech reviewer so I'd change my mind in a month, but hey, the Duo is terrific overall. Just wish it had a couple of extra things that it doesn't. That's why I prefer Duo 2.
I think you've got the touch response thing a bit backwards, they can't get it on par with other phones because it's a hardware thing. The digitizer just isn't very good. You can tweak the drivers all day and it won't fix bad hardware. The rest is preference. I actually have been known to disable 5G to save battery at times because it's 100% not noticeable to me lol.
@@shanecraigtech I thought from what I researched they used specific hardware that they didn't have specific drivers for, with Android and they just couldn't get it figured out. Just my limited knowledge and research. You would definitely know more
1st off, you all should know that I'm the world's greatest shopper: I purchased mine on Amazon, mew for $150 and a got a discount on that price. I still use my Dou EVERY SINGLE DAY! I love this device for clutch situations: Multi-tasking, business correspondence, research (Co-Pilot!), form signing, video correspondence, group messaging while doing business as usual task. I'm scared sh*tless that it may stop working so I focus on getting all the use out of it that I can!
I bought one @$320 on Amazon. I use it as my work device. Being able to multi instance slack is fucking huge. Many coworkers use Folds, but the duo is much more productive, if not as cool.
Thank you for your very informative videos. Got the Surface Duo 1 at a very deep discount a few months ago. Getting a 2nd one for a child with visual impairment. One BIG question: Does the Surface Slim pen with haptic feedback work on the Duo 1? The UOGIC pen snycs but has tremor issues. The original Surface pen works well for writing, but does not snyc. Your advice will be very helpful.
I got my device for $180.00. I love the aesthetics, the dual screen the independent of each other make it a marvel. Android 12L enough said. My phone has two cracks on the front and the back but works fine. I may look for a new one with 256bg. but other than that, I love it.
Just got one for 100. Glass is cracked on the back glass. The inside main screen are immaculate. I honestly think this device is super cool. It's interesting because I daily drive a z fold 2 which I also love, so I belivwve the duo 1 will be a nice companion device when I travel!
Day one duo 1 owner. The device is better than ever. Been my daily for two years. Every time some one asks me about it I say had it for two years and it's awesome (except camera). They are always shocked it's two years old. Looks like it's from the future. Contemplated duo 2 but don't want the thicker device or camera hump... Duo1 is a solid phone especially right now.
Hey man thanks you for all the usefull videos . I'm hesitating to pick a surface duo 1 for 300 $ but i'm a bit worrying about battery life . I want it to be my principal device and for that it has to last me a full day off the charger . How much screen on time do you get in average from the first model with the last android update when using it mostly unfolded with the two screens ? Do a more moderate usage of the dual screen mode and switching often to one screen during the day significantly increase the battery life or not that much ?
Surfacr duo 1 excellent device for me. Extra bonus.... Like windows 11 split screen, more multitasking. Pending more feature for launcher, like launcher on my old xiaomi.
When I pull out my Duo in public, I feel important. It makes me look high class and wealthy. When people see me using this unique device, it affects their brain to the point they have to get up and leave out of pure jealousy because they cannot compute such a device's existence.
That's a good one.

I get so many 'wow what phone is that'

The No Man's Sky of smartphones. Kudos to Microsoft and Google
This is a great comment
Agree. Love me some Duo and Duo 2. And no man's sky is such fun
Was litterally thinking that very thing when watching!

I Love where they are right now that I picked one up on eBay and loving it.
I bought one at Christmas and I have fell in love with this thing. Duo 1
I am so glad i went for the Duo 2, initially it was a good device but with 12L it is an awesome device.
Cheers Shane. Yes, Android 12 is very good, love the colour palette options. All my friends, who I`ve shown the device to, are mightily impressed!
I didn't care about the bugs when I got my duo 1, the form factor was perfect for me and I just loved it!
@1HeatWalk how does the watch make the surface duo better?
This reminds me of the video game industry. Early release, and fix it on the way lol. All jokes aside, it's great to see such a unique phone get love. I've recently been switching phones lately and the duo 2 stays in the rotation as a main device. Currently have a Xperia 1 iii to compensate for the lack of camera. Working out great 👍
I just downloaded this update a few days ago and it even fixed a flickering green screen issue I had with the second screen. I thought the fingerprint sensor was completely broken because it would just never work and now everything works flawlessly again.
Awesome!
I'm hoping to get 12L soon no for some reason fingerprint will not unlock mine but works in other situations
I got mine a month or so ago for like 350 just hoping it would get better and bam!
I thought about ordering a Surface Duo before I got my Z Fold 4 but was always worried about it being older tech. I'm glad to see Microsoft really keeping up with it, especially with the Duo 2 out for over a year now
nice to see the chn growing along with the surface duo.
Got it yesterday, and it's genius ! Samsung Galaxy ultra 22 owner since Note 8. Surface Duo is a dream coming true.
Comment made me laugh, thanks 😂

For clarity, when I said that Microsoft worked on Android for 6 months before shipping doing I was being mostly hyperbolic. They made the move from Andromeda OS to Android in early 2019 and shipped Duo in late 2020.
I need a bumper replacement for the duo 1. Do you know where I can find one?
I cannot wait receiving and comparing my mint duo 1 and used duo 2 both purchased last week. I wanna try 12L.. and Win11 too..!
I had one when it came out was awful but now I am tempted to buy one again from Amazon I seen them going for as low as £400
Am still on Android 11 on my Duo 1 (ATT version), ATT hasn't delivered an update yet :( Even so at the current Android version my Duo runs like a champ and as my 2ndary device I use it a lot and really love it.
Where did you get that wallpaper? Still waiting for 12L update on AT&T :(
Search for an app called backdrops
I love using my surface duo 1 to do work while I'm making coffee runs/errands, I can still use zoom and slack and remote into my pc
Hi need advice I have a samsung galaxy note 10 plus 5g and am looking st this phone should I swop or not
My Duo 1 still hasn't got the 12L update. But I am genuinely impressed with how much better they have made this device since launch.
Yes
@@shanecraigtech do you know if there is anyway to force the 12L update?
My surface duo don't got the update yet ! Someone have the same issue?
As an artist, this thing is so useful because I can put 2 different reference images on both screens.
I was surprise is well how is good is now with 12 l like new live on surface duo
How does the camera compare to the camera on the iphone 8 plus?
How is the phone feature?
Thanks for the unbiased video. After the 12L upgrade what's the size of the OS?
The only pen that actually functions beyond writing is the slim pen 2 but it does not have the haptics it does on other devices.
@@shanecraigtech Thank you. The original surface pen still works on the Duo 1.
I’m trying to buy another one, can’t find a good deal on one can you help?
Do glance/peek notifications work any longer on the Duo v1? If so how?
I got my device for $180.00. I love the aesthetics, the dual screen the independent of each other make it a marvel. Android 12L enough said. My phone has two cracks on the front and the back but works fine. I may look for a new one with 256bg. but other than that, I love it.
My Duo 1 has been collecting dust since I got the Fold 3. Maybe I'll try it out again with the update
I'm looking into getting one, i'm just concerned about updates. Does anyone know until when will this device be supported ?
One more year
I'm really thinking about getting this. I kind of want to hold out for the Duo 2 if it also gets a price but.
Just got one for 100. Glass is cracked on the back glass. The inside main screen are immaculate. I honestly think this device is super cool. It's interesting because I daily drive a z fold 2 which I also love, so I belivwve the duo 1 will be a nice companion device when I travel!
@Bierhoff OfferUp (local selling and buying app)
Just gotta haggle people and some will just let things go for cheap.
I sometimes have issues with bugs which is annoying glad it isn’t my only phone and just my android tablet that complements my iPad
I'm tempted for these kinds of phones.... but I'm using a Unihertz Titan Slim....🤔 I'm always chasing the next level of productivity.
4-6 hours
@@shanecraigtech thanks you !!
Surfacr duo 1 excellent device for me. Extra bonus.... Like windows 11 split screen, more multitasking. Pending more feature for launcher, like launcher on my old xiaomi.
