      My flat cost 120k in 2002. This is just madness! We bought ourselves 11 year old cars with low kays, and expect them to last us the next 10, my last car was sold with 300 000 kays, at 20 years old, and went on for another good few years with the new owner.

    • @angrysocialjusticewarrior

      R400k for a car that is almost on par with modern entry level luxury sedan. It also comes with a massive 300nm of torque. Does a Polo GTI have anywhere near that kind of torque?
      Now compare that to the R200k corolla that you could buy in 2002 and you will see that the R400k version is not expensive for nothing.

    I considered an SUV for my next vehicle when I traded my 12 year old sedan a few months ago, but remembered that at my age that there was nothing I could put into an SUV that I would have been able to unload by myself when I got home. I figured a truck, bakkie, made more sense if I wanted utility, but a sedan with fold down rear seats and a decent liftover would be just a bit better. So I bought a newer sedan. It's a nice daily driver, quiet, reasonably economical, and rides/handles well. ( Though, like that Corolla, no contender for race track duties.)

    • @angrysocialjusticewarrior
      @angrysocialjusticewarrior 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Another advantage is that its almost impossible to roll over a sedan by simply steering too hard when performance evasive maneuvers. A bakkie or SUV can roll over even from a simple pothole at the right speed.

  • @nkgudih
    @nkgudih 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Just a correction Ciro, the Toyota CVT is actually called eCVT (electronic CVT). With over 10 years of owning/driving hybrids, the truth is the fuel-saving depends largely on the driver and his/her driving style more than what the hybrid technology can offer. Otherwise, very reliable & comes with a standard 8yrs/195 000km traction battery warranty that you won't need/use

    • @angrysocialjusticewarrior

      Given Toyota SA's track record, I'll assume that the SA version comes with wheelcaps and the import comes with real allow rims.
      I also wouldn't be surprised if the SA built ones come with a cassette player and a large hole where the infotainment system was supposed to be. Skinny bicycle tires with no ABS probably come standard too.
      Hopefully the SA version does not come with a Toyota tazz engine and laptop battery as the SA version of a "hybrid".

    Went with a family member last week to look at corolla cross for them and ended up getting a quote on the corolla sedan for my dad. I was very impressed by the interior, size and build quality. Its very close to an entry level luxury sedan, only lacking a more fancier infotainment system and fancier plastic trim for the interior to match the ride quality. Also interms of space it doesn't feel much smaller than the cross and exterior looks 10x better on the sedan.

  • @wimschoenmakers5463
    @wimschoenmakers5463 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    No, that B mode is not bringing you more regenerated power, but uses the petrol engine compression to slow down the car even more. This way you dont use your breakpads only and overheating them. Make sure to break now and then with these hybrids, because your breakdiscs are gonna rust after a while almost not using them. Changing the breakpads is about every eight to ten years, because you break mostly on a electric motor. Also pay attention leaving a higway exit on speed, because lifting the gaspedal shuts down the ICE immidiately to safe fuel, but the car will not slow down much by the motor generator MG2.

    • @angrysocialjusticewarrior
      @angrysocialjusticewarrior 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@udodedekind7292 It is safer.
      Sedans have an extremely low center of gravity that makes it almost impossible to roll over. Bakkies and SUV's roll over very easily (you can roll them over even by simply turning your steering wheel to sharply at the right speed).
      Sedans also have significantly better handling and stability on the road which will allow you to be more successful in performing emergency evasive maneuvers.
      Also, don't be fooled into thinking that just because a vehicle sits higher, that its a bigger vehicle and thus able to absorb the impart of a car crash better. Almost all of the time, a crossover SUV is nothing more than a sedan with a raised suspension. A real SUV (Ford Everest, Fortuner, Toureg, etc) is a bigger vehicle (but there are also sedans that are also big just like Bentley, Audi A7, Lexus LS500, etc).

    • @udodedekind7292
      @udodedekind7292 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@angrysocialjusticewarrior I understand your point but dont be a fool to forget that the bigger the vehicle the more momentum it has what happens when a big suv hits a sedan, which vehicle obtaines more damage and when a sedan hits an suv from the side the suv wil tip or the sedan wil simply push itself under the suv by taking this into consederation the suv driver and passengers are much safer as they are not directly impacted the sedan could be crushed with the driver inside
      My dad is jaws of life qualified and I have seen this time and time again while you are right the stapabilty and handling and performance of sedans tend to be alot better but how is all that handling any good when a SUV with 3 times the curb weight hits you or you them , Id rather be in the Suv the😉

    You are making a good case for petrol-hybrid and electric against diesel, and I'm sure many tree hugging motorists will adore you for that, but let's look at the facts from a local South African perspective:
    Firstly, petrol prices will NOT decrease, best case, maybe stay the same, but more likely to double over 5-10 more years.
    Secondly, we know the criminals running the country won't be able to steal much petrol tax if everyone goes electric, so I can't see the infrastructure needed for charging going up pretty soon, maybe only W.Cape.
    And thirdly, with our failing BBBEE/Zimbabwe-like economy, petrol will eventually become a scarcity, then diesel engined vehicles might be our only mode of transport.

    I have the 2017 Corolla exclusive CVT I get 8l per 100 km in town. The 1.4 Diesel gets 5 Litres per 100 and this Hybrid gets the same... Why the hell doesn't Toyota just bring back the Diesel motor and save even more money on not having a useless hybrid? I get that Diesel is more dirty, but in the greater scheme of things the biggest polluters are coal, these Hybrids will do,almost nothing in the real world to bring down emissions. I as a consumer want a low cost to run car, and diesel is the best.

    The part about sedan boots being bigger than SUVs is so true. I discovered that about a decade ago. I drove the family's brand new Hyundai Elantra to work and at the office parking, after work, my boss and I happened to open our boots and I was surprised by how small his SUV boot was. I thought that since it was higher off the ground, it would be big all around. Not so much.

      @angrysocialjusticewarrior 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think what both you and Ciro actually mean is that boots from *Crossovers are small, not SUV.
      SUV is a big car like Toyota Fortuna and Ford Everest, and can fit a massive amount of cargo.
      The cars with the small boots that you are referring to, are crossovers or "XUV" (not SUV). XUV's like the Rav4, Hyndai Tucson, etc are small.
      When it comes to hatchbacks, some car reviewers like to claim that hatcbacks have more boot space than sedans, but in my personal experience it has always been the opposite. A polo hatchback wont fit as many bags as the sedan version.

    A question I keep asking myself. Why do they not also integrate the batteries of a hybrid into the floor, like they do with full EVs? That way you don't encroach on boot space and fuel tank size. Imagine you could still have that 50l tank (as opposed to the 40l in the hybrid), you could do over 1000km on a single tank, as opposed to the 800KM on the 40l tank. And perhaps you could still fit a full size spare, if you really want to.
    Thank you for a great review.

    • @declansgamereview6523
      @declansgamereview6523 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably because of the space the exhaust system takes up and the heat it generates which will affect the battery- just my guess. The fuel tank also needs to go under the back seat as well.

    • @siyabongacele8049
      @siyabongacele8049 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Less fuel tank=less weight=less fuel consumption
      Bigger tank=more weight=more fuel consumption
      That why even the battery is not too big

    Toyota Hybrids are super popular here in Canada, and getting more so, with good reason. And they offer the driving range to cover vast distances of wilderness with no petrol stations without inducing panic in the driver…..for fear of getting mauled alive by grizzlies (or lions in SA) or freezing to death (quite literally)whilst stranded beside the road without fuel…. So one can see the hybrid system as a safety feature. 😉. AND the plug-in hybrid RAV4 Prime is, apart from the GR Supra (which is really a BMW in Toyota drag), the fastest Toyota in Canada from 0-100km/h at 5.7sec’s! And with such a name, you have the bragging rights to say you drive a Transformer.

      Lions don’t roam around so, there is absolutely no chance of being mauled. It’s extremely rare that a lion escapes a game farm.

    • @angrysocialjusticewarrior
      @angrysocialjusticewarrior 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Who would want stiff springs on a daily driver? My goodness!
      Stiff springs is one of the major reasons owners of sporty hatchbacks never keep their cars for long. They ride too horribly.
      As for AWD. The fact that South Africa does not have any extreme weather, I'd rather go for RWD. But the types of drivers who drive a corolla or Polo would not even know how to drive RWD safely (Just look how many of them keep spinning out in their bmw 1 series and 3 series), so FWD is fine for a corolla.

    The B mode or brake mode doesn't actually regen, instead it keeps the engine on and uses engine compression to slow the car down. This is useful when going down a long steep hill.
    In D mode or drive mode the engine often turns off to save fuel, so B mode overcomes this.
    To be clear, D mode is more efficient than B mode. Try it and you will see the engine will not turn off in B mode.
