      Agreed. Others may laugh but if you research the most trustworthy and reliable vehicles, Toyota and Lexus are number 1 and that's the reason why a 1980's Toyota sells for the same price as a BMW or Merc from the late 2000's

      This is South Africa. Not the US. We don't see it the same. German cars are very reliable. We have people who actually know how to look after them and service them. It seems people in the US only know about simpleton cars so the German cars confuse them. VW has 5 of their cars in the top 10 best selling cars in South Africa every month. Why? Because they're bulletproof reliable and cheap to maintain. The C Class and 3 series is the best selling sedan. Toyota tried with their Lexus IS which doesn't even sell 1 model a month. Even from mainstream brands, the Mazda 6 was discontinued, the Honda Accord was discontinued etc because no one wanted those. The C Class and 3 series sell best in class because they are reliable and cheap to maintain.

    • @TECTSSA

      I use to be a Merc technician and now deal with extended warranties. The French and Germans are constantly competing on who can build the most troublesome cars. People have to folk out thousands to repair engines, gearboxes and control units besides other items that wear out prematurely like suspension components (at 60 000km), interior switches, etc. Japanese cars go on forever. Be it Toyota, Honda, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Suzuki. My Toyota is 8 years old with 130 000km and I've only done scheduled services and a set of brake pads. Even the original globes are still working. 🙂

    Toyota really is the greatest car brand, no wonder the Corolla is the best selling nameplate of all time.This car is the most premium Corolla yet and will sell well because with SUVs ruling the roost, the most sensible sedan will always be the Corolla with that unmatched reputation for reliability and quality.I predict in five years Lexus will be giving BMW and Mercedes a run for their money in the South African premium car segment as I am starting to see slot more on the roads and as South Africans show more brand awareness which will be great since Lexus dominates in most major markets...

    In the US, this would be the XLE trim, but it comes with 1.8l engine. The SE and XSE trim comes with the 2.0l engine and direct shift cvt that has a physical launch gear. Toyota safety sense 2.0 and Apple 🍏 car play is standard. The SE trim looks far better then this SA version. Toyota did a very good job with the suspension tuning. It is a quality car.

All too often I click on a likely thing about cars, and get a car in the distance with a hooligan foreground in a back-to-front hat who shouts at me in the plural. So nice to find a chap who does the right thing, knows what he's doing and talks to me as a person with a brain. Right. Spleen vented. Thank you very much.

      In the U.S. market the model tested is the top model among Corolla sedans, perhaps this is the top model in South Africa? If so, that would explain why it is so expensive.
      The U.S. has/had several Corolla trim levels below this: starting with a 1.8 liter powered sedan in near " bare bones " / poverty spec " L " trim, then an LE, and 1 or 2 more trim levels until you get to XSE which is equivalent to this model.

    Honest review; I can give them that. I test drove the 1.8L CVT and the 2.0L manual, and I have to say, the manual variant is a much better option. Personally, I’d never buy a car that has a CVT gearbox because you are not going anywhere fast and that drone sound is just super annoying. My pick? Any of the offerings except the CVT.

    I have owned several Honda/Acura cars in the past but might be interested in the Corolla (more likely the hatchback model tho) if only it wasn't getting to be nearly impossible to buy either a Corolla or any Honda with a manual transmission.
    It isn't just the sound and behavior of a CVT that puts me off, it's the " iffy " reliability that has me trying to stick with a manual transmission. If the only transmission choice was a proper automatic transmission I would find it easier to consider buying a Corolla.

    The Android Auto thing is very confusing on the new Corollas...
    It seems for different countries it might be different. As of early 2020 in Canada, only the hatchback has AA and not the sedan. The salespeople are even confused as they put AA and carplay stickers on the sedans when they didn't have AA. I pointed that out and they had to ask several people and check sources then removed it the next week I was in negotiating my lease pt2.
    I have been driving the 2020 hatchback, and gotta say. Huge jump in terms of performance and driving feel from my older 2017 Corolla, and I'm one of the regular folks that just drive a car to work and back. It's a bit less boring driving 60km every day to work and back, so I guess money well spent. The only complaint is the hatch is very easy to get dirty which is annoying as it's a manual door to open and close and get dirt all over your hand.

    As usual, one will get all too excited for nothing with a Corolla , and to be really honest, the only thing that stands out for this Toyota is that its a naturally aspirated 2.0 engine which still give us hope that a normal combustion engine can still work in today's environmentally concerned community. So yes!, the Brand has stood the test of time but really in my opinion it a bit too little to late. I will reserve my real comments about other things, but its good to know that the Corolla has decided to join the party.

    • @fidasmatsimela9597
      @fidasmatsimela9597 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not this one. Even the entry level Toyota quest is very expensive now, think they'll go for polo since is cheaper and equally reliable like Toyota's

    Cvt not very good when driving up high hills at a sudden change in driving condition, up high hills. Sport auto probably better.
    My Corolla made in Thailand, minor internal faults here and there. Made in Japan probably better. But engine wise probably no difference, since ready assembled.

      @@SDav21 its still far better than the 1.2, and that 2.0 has tunes that can improve its power by 15% without the need of changing it hardware

    I had to sell my 2013 Corolla due to the dreadful CVT gearbox. Couldn't live with it. Shame because being a corolla it was 100% reliable to drive. Was too boring a car though. Ok for shopping, rental car etc

    To be honest if you can afford this, you can easily afford the top spec Mazda 3, that would be my pick, it has the looks of a premium car(outside and inside) and it even feels like one.

      You still learning about automobiles I see comparing a Mazda to a Toyota.its been done before, 30 years later you still see the Toyota running on the streets where no even remembers a Mazda 3.Its the best selling vehicle of all time...

    • @ganjabobby
      @ganjabobby 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Same here. The build quality, materials and interior/exterior aesthetics of the Mazda are far superior to the Toyota. Warranty is another story though.

      Nah it's well positioned. You pay for quality and reliability and ease of mind. Over the course of 5 years the car will pay for itself with lack of servicing needs, as well as retaining its value really well. It's a Toyota so you'll likely die before it does
