    I think Mustrum Ridcully had an influence on how the uni changed.

    Discworld's Wizards are a fascinating bunch, and there's a lot more to talk about when it comes to these gentlemen of the Art beyond Unseen University. This video is a nice little primer on the topic, but I hope that you plan to branch out and explore Wizardry beyond the reach of the Archchancellor, such as the guttering remains of the "old school" that can be found in various other cities, country (hedge) Wizards, foreign examples and, of course, a touch here or there on the topic of the NEW Universities.
    I know those are all more niche topics that perhaps weren't within the scope of your grand overview, but perhaps when you've covered the broadest strokes...

    Happy as heck to be your 666th subscriber! Yes I think this should have 1 million views and you should have that in subscribers too, but part of me is a little bit glad this thing we have is still special to us, it hasn’t been completely corporately shilled after Sir Pratchett’s death and the series has been treated with the utmost respect as far as I’ve seen, unlike some series lol! Thanks man, I love for this content! Seriously :-)

    great video, i'm more confused about discworld magic after listening to this video than before. (that means its well done. no one should realy be able to understand it. not even the wizards there realy understand it.)

      Niels Verschoor I get what you’re saying tbh, I’m not the sharpest tool and after a while the amount of information is a struggle but I listen and read the books in short bursts, I really have connected with them, it’s like reading them is literally going to another place :) it’s great how the comedy doesn’t take away from the atmosphere :)

      Wizardry works on Geometry, Witchary works on Headology. As with most things on the Disk.... what you believe happens.
      If you don't know you have a certainty of failure, you will with out a doubt succeed. 1/1 million chances and all that.

      Well, I am somewhat of a small channel, but by all means, share it around to people. It would really mean a lot to me as i continue to improve and update this series :)

      TheAlbion I would love to share it, but I know no one who actually reads Discworld novels. But I fucking love your content. Hey, I can post this to r/fantasy, if you haven't.

    You got some information wrong you do not need to be the 8th son of an 8th son, any child a wizard has is born a wizard and a wizard can pass on thire powers (through thire staff) at the moment of thire death. But the 8th son of an 8th son is always a wizard (or sorcerer).

      A small but important point, yes. I think some of these need redos

    8 orders and 8 levels. Aren't they forbidden the use of the number 2x4 or 1-9?

  • @pambronson4467
    @pambronson4467 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Esk is proof that the saying should be, "an eighth child of an eighth son".

  • @craigwarner6156
    @craigwarner6156 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    I thought the 8th son of an 8th son was a sorcerer. And anyone could be a wizard

    • @Unseenarchivist
      @Unseenarchivist  6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Nope :) The books Sourcery, Equal Rites and Science of Discworld (the first one) all confirm this peice of lore: 8th of an 8th is a wizard, 8th of a wizard is a sorcerer. It did stop being referenced after the early days of course, and I do personally like to think that wizards can occur without being the 8th of an 8th, but simply that being one provides a 100% chance of magical gifts.

      A Wizard must also have the particular structure in their eyes that allows them to see Octurine, the color of magic. These structures also allow them to see the shadows of the denizens of the dungeon dimensions when they are trying to enter the world, and allows them to see other magical things like Death (and other anthropomorphic personifications.

      Duh...am I thus wrong in thinking that it was Octarine Sapient tree Wood, @@hammond1994?

    • @pambronson4467
      @pambronson4467 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lauriecroad3186, Yes... you are wrong Octurine is the color of magic (the hidden eighth color of the rainbow). Sapient pear wood however shows that Pratchett recognized the potential of trees as living sentient things.
      Just imagine being forcibly bifurcated, cut into planks, and reassembled as a trunk with several rivets and facets placed on you for decoration. It is no wonder why Rincewind's Trunk is so homicidal in nature.

    To Albion's Library Keeper - Um...given that you may be in haste to ensure rapid passing from each sentence/topic to the next, you could seek guidance from some of the readers of the
    Audio Discworld Books on Disc... who, sensibly, use the gap between sentences to allow the
    narrator to BREATHE, and at the same time for some of the more mature observers to also
    take a breath - having paused to take note of every exacting detail. I say this, not in criticism,
    but because I am one of the "Olders" who cannot pause breathing as long as you do - but
    you don't really, do you, because you eliminate gaps in the reading by editing them out. I
    cannot do this when I am reading or listening as Death reminds me that "I am here!!" by
    making the world go very dark - thus forcing a sharp intake of breath... in which period I lose
    track of what you were saying.
    The nub of my plea then, is this...please slow down, insert pauses, and a little expressiveness occasionally is not a sign of weakness in a Librarian...please show some compassion for your
    somewhat ancient audience/listeners.
    Thankyou. May A'tuin show mercy to you......

    I thought you didn't have to be an 8th son of am 8th son only that being one means you kind of don't have a choice ?
