Point of order about the Ramtops. There's loads of flat land there. The problem is that most of it is vertical instead of horizontal. :p

Can you find me anything on how cities die? Not hot they end but how they die.
And also can you find anything on wire baskety wheely things that are useful?
And don't be silly, please let my mates into the UU library. I know they're zombies, vampires and werewolves but they're good people and they won't harm the books in fact they might even stop the wire baskety wheely things stealing the books.
C'mon be tolerant of the undead, I'm sure they are tolerant of monkeys in return......errm...APES,APES I'M SORRY I'M SORRY.

It is occasionally necessary for an elephant to move a leg to allow the sun to go past!

From what I can gather from "Witches Abroad", Genua is basically New Orleans. It has a Fat Tuesday celebration, they eat alligator and frogs legs with spicy herbs, as well as voodoo and zombies. It's where Nanny Ogg got her banjo! I've actually been to the Big Easy itself and can confirm this.

I imagine Nanny Ogg trying all the food in Genua like Homer trying all the food in New Orleans.

Thanks a bunch...I’m reading my first Pratchett book(small gods) based on a recommendation by a fellow fan. It took me a good number of pages to kinda catch on to the world of discworld(having discovered the “intro to discworld” at the end of the book after I was already engrossed.

    • @geraldfrost4710
      @geraldfrost4710 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The first few books Pratchett wrote were heavier on world building. The later books were heavier on personal conflict. Dropping Rinsewind off the edge of the world always gets a laugh. You have to read a few books before you get to Going Postal. You have to already understand the people of clay, and why the (probable) king of Anck-Morepork is a six foot three dwarf who is dating a werewolf. That takes quite a few pages of explanation.

  • @MrMortull

I've never seen anyone try to take on the Disc as a whole before, bringing it into holistic focus... this is something I always considered to be impossible or at least hopelessly difficult due to Sir Pratchett's own "Never trust any author who draws the map first" mentality.
Also, not to criticise too hard, but you may be missing a little of the subtlety of the nomenclature and pronunciation of various place names. Llamedos is NOT Wales in the same way that XXXX is NOT Australia, and as such the name sounds very different than it 'reads'. The same goes for the Vieux river (and its delta) in which we find Genua... Genua being as it is a fantasy take on several Earthly cities, primarily presenting as a creole sort of place, which leads me to believe that 'Vieux' should be pronounced 'Via' in a French-sounding way.
Terry was very fond of sly puns and brazen wordplay, after all.

Shouldn't the turtles be facing nose to tail? I thought they walked around the back of the turtle to cause the world to turn. Never mind the physics, but the friction of the whole world moving across the backs of those turtles would chafe. Anyway, one of the elephants missed the touchdown during creation and splatted on the wrong side of the disk, as we learned in "The Fifth Elephant".

    • @grimmj0ker

The most subtle and important pun is the Turtles name A'Tuin.....A Twin....the twin to the one in the readers head...

    • @geraldfrost4710

@@ahcokris "The Man From Snowy River" is a story set in Australia where wild horses are captured and sold the military. A few pages over Snowy (Rinsewind's horse) causes an avalanche that blocks a canyon and captures a whole herd of horses. A few pages prior was a sheep shearing contest, a scene out of another classic book about Australia. A few chapters into the story Rinsewind meets a dwarf named Mad, which is as close as one can get to Mad Max without copyright infringement. Except Pratchett's Max is madder, the sheep shearing is crazier, and Snowy is about two feet tall (exactly what Rinsewind looked for in a horse). It's dry everywhere, the barman at Didjabringabeeralong is a crocodile wearing dungarees, and a small black man with a boomerang, might be other hints about it being Australia-like.
Rather than googling it, read it! Watch Rinsewind throw the stupid curved flat stick away as hard as he can because he doesn't want to play.

Do I understand it correctly that the whole disc is only one time zone? Because of its flatness the whole disc should be illuminated when the sun goes up, right?
Except for mountains casting shadows ect. But that would depend on how high the sun rises each day.

yes, indeed, we know how to read maps. after all we read pratchett. but to say it is really a specific city or set of cities is less than true. it's a phantasy take on a subject of a city. not a citys in italy per se
