    Nitro Engine tuning is probably the most asked question on my Channel, people struggling with their tuning and asking tuning related questions. In this 4 part series, I look at Tuning and adjusting the High Speed Needle, the Low Speed Needle, and the Idle speed screw. Please check out the other three parts of this series and gain a better understanding of how to tune your nitro engine!

    thanks for this vid brought a secondhand traxxas rustler and was having issues starting it your other video on starting a nitro engine after months of no use also helps as well got it started in about 30 seconds following yours steps.it would run fine when running at slow throttle then stall at full throttle.thought it was too lean but your video showed me it was the opposite.

    The 28 Spec 2s is a .28 cubic inch big block engine. Replacing the original Spec 1S, the Axial .28 Spec 2S features a larger machined billet aluminum heat-sink head for increased surface area and cooling, adjusted timing for increased RPM (37,500 vs. 36,000), and a three needle slide carburetor that includes 8.0. 8.5, & 9.0mm venturis. That's the engine.

    what i start it i have to have the throttle trim set higher but when started i have to trim it down as it at starts to move very slightly, i then start running the truck it feels like i could probably get a better to speed out of it but it still moves very quick but when i take it off the full throttle it still runs arround with out me touching the throttle until i break and then it goes back to idle, just didnt know if it was my idle setting or or the high or low speed needle, help would be much appreciated as I'm really stuck.

    Hi I have a Hyper ST and often struggle with tuning. I get it to an OK setting for a couple of outings then I take it out and it seems to develop a a new problem that needs sorting and retuning for. Your tuning vids have tended to help to date but the Current issue is I have good idle and initial low end acceleration and speed but when I open the throttle past half way it cuts out. Can't seem to rectify the problem even if I revert back to stock settings.

    Would a black glow plug and a small amount of buildup on the piston be rich or lean.
    When tuning I leaned out the engine (turning clockwise) until my car performed well.
    I have searched online and there are lots of conflicting ideas.
    If my engine is running lean then why would it cause carbon buildup, I would have thought it’s the opposite.

    Hello, great videos that are really informative & helpful. I'm very new to Nitro as I'm trying to get my son into it, he's currently on Lipo RC cars. Question, is it normal for the exhaust to spit unburnt fuel, not a lot just a bit? Noticed some while setting up the tune once the engine was warm. Thanks.

    • @TheRCBiker
      @TheRCBiker  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, it's normal, some fuels are very oily (Optifuel, for one) and will spit oil from the exhaust. More than likely the engine might be running a bit on the richer side but if it's running good then no worries. Better to be running too much fuel than not enough!

    Ok like your vids mate ....
    I’m new to nitro 50 year old child .. purchased a very cheap spirit 1.10 buggy from China Have enjoyed keeping it running after crashing numerous times replacing bits here and there ..
    Larger wheels ect making super fast ...
    My question ... I’ve adjusted setting high and low speed settings many times... atm
    From cold tiny little trim on throttle start fast idles .. great off I go .. ( now to be honest we do thrash the cars speed wise ) And suspect the engine is running too hot ... there’s a sensible amount of smoke and engine hugely responsive ..
    when I bring the car back it generally would struggle to idle and stall .... restarting if difficult at this point .. where as I need the trim say half throttle for it to start ...
    if I allow to cool sensibly ii would restart with just a little trim .. fast idle fine ...
    Am I just running the car hard and getting to hot ... or are my running setting still out ??
    Cheers in advance ...

    • @TheRCBiker

      No not usually. If you run it without the filter whilst tuning when you put the air filter back on it will reduce air flow and you'll probably have to change the settings again

    • @TheRCBiker
      @TheRCBiker  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Jason, it'll either be a dodgy glow plug or too rich on the low end. Replace glow plug first, and then if that doesn't work lean out the low end half a turn and see if that helps. Make sure you give it a revv with the glow igniter in before anything though, sometimes that's just all they need

    Hi there
    I have just broken in my Bullet 3.0 and have a problem when applying the throttle the engine doesnt respond until after at least a quarter pull on the trigger. Can you suggest a fix for this?
    Many thanks,
    Simon

    • @TheRCBiker
      @TheRCBiker  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Simon, it sounds like the throttle linkage and servo position need correcting.
      -Unscrew the little screw on the top of the throttle servo.
      -Set the throttle trim on your radio to centre
      -Push the throttle fully closed manually using the throttle linkage, check idle gap is 1.5mm (adjust accordingly with idle screw)
      - Replace the Servo horn onto the servo and verify that the idle gap is 1.5mm when the throttle is not being pressed on the radio.
      Now, when you pull the trigger, it should open the carb straight away.

  • @Jayc1993uk
    @Jayc1993uk 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi jt I have a hsp backwash buggy just finished the break in procedure but every time I brake the engine cuts out and seems to rev high by its self how to I adjust the carb so it doesn't cut out when braking the gap is set to 1mm so I don't understand why she cuts out when brake is applied any help would be great thanks great vids btw!

    • @TheRCBiker
      @TheRCBiker  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's cutting out because the idle screw is set too loose. Remove the Servo horn from the Throttle servo. Push the carb in closed manually, and whilst it's pushed in, tighten your idle screw until the gap is set to 1mm. Then, with it still pushed in, replace the servo horn onto the servo.
      At the moment your 1mm idle gap is being held by the servo position, not the idle screw. Therefore when you break it's closing the carb, cutting the engine

  • @edbrunning3137
    @edbrunning3137 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I just installed a lrp 21z they recommend using 25 to 30 % nitro but everyone at my local hobby center said it would be ok to break it in using 20% with 14% oil. Now I've followed all the usual break in procedures running 2 tanks at idle then 1/4 turn every following tank . My idle screw is spot on .the pinch test is at about 4 to 5 seconds until stalling so that seems right. But she keeps bogging out once you give it throttle. I did notice it's still spitting oil and smoke so I'm assuming it's still way to rich ? I know all engines are slightly different but my concern is the hsn is almost half way in and it's still blowing smoke and oil and bogging out. should I quit using 20% and switch to 25% or keep leaning it out and see what happens ? I'm sure you get a million of these questions but it's because you are talented in nitro. Thanks again for the videos . Edmund.

    • @TheRCBiker
      @TheRCBiker  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If its bogging it could be running lean. Just because it's spitting oil doesn't always mean it's running rich, some nitro fuels have a high oil content and they'll spit fuel whether lean or not. I dont think the fuel percentage will cause it to bog down, try returning the carburetor needles to factory default settings, they might've arrived from the factory messed up!

    • @edbrunning3137
      @edbrunning3137 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fantastic problem solved. You were absolutely correct the hsn to lean. Reset hsn runs like a champ now. I broke it in on 20% vp fuel and plan on switching to 25% how off is the tune ? should I simply reset all screws? Or just fatten up the hsn?

      Return your needles back to their factory settings (found in user manual) and follow my tuning tutorials closely. Also check your glow plug is healthy

    I bought a nitro traxxas stampede of Macari the buy and sell app for $143 with tax and I order a ez start motor and the cable for the motor and glow plug and I order the gears Andover order a low speed needle I think all ready for watching this video my neighbors are going to hate me when I get my nitro rc car up and running because of the nose

    what if your t maxx 2.5 stalls and the idle gap is big?

    • @TheRCBiker
      @TheRCBiker  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's probably the tuning settings. When is it stalling? At Idle or during acceleration?

      Most likely it's starved of fuel and running lean on the HSN, set your needles back to factory settings and then work from there following this video :)

      JT12's R/C Videos okat thanks, I will do it after I replace my stripped carb :) (thought hsn was flushed)

    Was a great video series. Wish this one delved in a little deeper on too lean of settings. Definitely the engine quitting was an extreme case. Also, I feel that your idle may be a touch too high, but that's just me, but it may work for you and your driving style. Otherwise, thank you for putting this series together!

    your LSN is too rich that's why it doesn't accelerate very quickly. And like you said the HSN could be leaner but it's very cold. I just don't run my more expensive cars like the 8ight in this weather, just stick to the cheaper nitro ones like Kyosha Fazer lol

    The butcher is at it again! The 'good tuning' is actually RICH, and there's ALOT of pre ignition occurring in the engine at high rpm. The 'rich' tuning is ACTUALLY pre-detonation of the fuel mixture, which is causing the crankshaft to spin in the opposite direction to forwards motion. These 1 explosion per cycle engines are to idle very coarsely. There is 1 "bang" note and a long pause of NO SOUND. Then another explosion, followed by a long period of NO SOUND. you guys have these things set as if they're 12 cylinder engines! You're WRONG! The timing of the thing is; "BANG" , no sound, no sound, no sound "BANG", no sound, no sound, no sound, "BANG", etc... Do some research, and listen to the sound of 1 cylinder motor bikes like triumph. Your nitro engine is supposed to have the same sound as those bikes just smaller in size. It's A ROUGH IDLE SOUND ENGINE. It sounds OUT OF BALANCE/ very rough. There's not multiple repeats of explosions per cycle! You DONT HAVE A MULTI-cylinder ENGINE! Lets make that point perfectly clear to all you morons! 1 cylinder means ROUGH IDLE music!

      When the car is operating in your 'rich mode' setting, the piston is in upwards motion, is being HIT BY AN EARLY EXPLOSION, and the piston is being forced downwards while it hasn't completed its upwards motion. The crankshaft forces the piston to keep moving upwards and reject the explosion forces pushing it downwards. Your car makes NO speed motion cause the piston doesn't get forced downwards. The explosion has finished by the time the piston reaches the top of the cylinder. Shut up, idiot! And stop making vids!

    idk why but I feel like the low speed needle could use some adjustment towards a leaner end as when he thoughtless up you notice it lags a little. Or could be a cold engine maybe
