      @@JCHIZ03 Locals are pretty much all over the place, just like everyone hearing about the story. The investigation was badly done. Even for the time.
      There are stories about the father smuggling/hiding weapons for paramilitary troops and some issues around that.
      Some theories involve the father of the Grubers killing the family, there is talk about incest and Andreas Gruber being the dad of his own grandchild (the killed 2 year old Josef). Or the whole stuff around that at least being the reason for what happened.
      The victims being covered up is another thing that people find really strange. Covering bodies is usually done by people close to the victims. In this case it could also have been to hide what happened, as it looked like someone stayed in the house for some time afterwards.
      If someone wanted to rob the place, hiding what happened could have been a good option. Someone who wasn't part of the family or the local area couldn't have known who would show up while they're still in there, searching for valuables.
      Those are the most discussed theories. Sadly, due to the lacking investigation and collection of evidence, every theory is more or less credible.

    Maybe it was the maid? She was the first one to hear those supposed voices, and her quitting could’ve been an attempt to rule herself out as a suspect. Perhaps the family mistreated her, and this was her revenge. Since she was the house maid, that would also mean that she had good knowledge of the layout of the house, and perhaps a secret entrance to the walls. It’s also weird that when she heard the voices, no one else heard them. But when Andreas heard them, the rest of the family did so to.

    I have a feeling it was the original maid. She was the only one at first who heard the sounds. After she "left" others started to hear the sounds. She knew the house, she knew the dogs, she probably left and received the newspaper and left it out that day. Her voice calling from inside the barn wouldn't have raise any alarm. That took used to kill them would not have taken any force to swing downward, it's really all gravity driven. Plus she probably was pretty strong due to the basic labor requirements back then... But that's just my two cents

    • @yvehooson9262
      @yvehooson9262 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      Why do people keep pointing the finger at the maid? Makes no sense. If you were planning to murder the family you are working for why would you spend months going on about hearing tapping and people moving in the attic then LEAVE the job? Seems a weird set up for mass murder, she'd have to go back there, months later, to a remote farm. Any woman working as a live in maid back in the 1920's would need to find another position straight away, she would be living and working there when the murders took place, surely? Plus female killers usually poison their victims, walloping them in the head with a heavy axe like tool does not seem very likely for a woman.

      @@yvehooson9262 Yep. And these are the consequences of rewriting stories based in history to be inclusive. It leads everyone of a certain age or mentality to think everyone had agency back then. The neighbor was accused, and he lived RIGHT THERE and had motive, but simple reasoning "Well we saw him all the time. No way he could be over there" ruled him immediately out. Oh, but the working-class woman in the 20's could just flitter around Germany commuting to work from murder.

Talking to himself in the attic, taunting the family and brutal violence without remorse sounds like a psychopath. I can only imagine how easy it would be for a psychopathic soldier to defect and continue sneaking into Germany to seek bloody revenge on Germans. I bet he was watching the family through slats in the walls while he was tapping, learning how they investigate and obsessing over his hatred towards them. If the killer spoke German I believe the family's ears would've picked up on the disembodied voice much easier and recognized it as human, but because he was speaking a foreign language they would've had a really hard time discerning between it being a person whispering nearby or just some unusual sounds of creaking, mice, snoring, etc.

    Reminds me of that case of the guy that was living in the walls of a house and faked being a ghost to scare the family, but unlike that one this one went ahead and killed the family at the end of his fake haunting. (The other guy got caught, went to jail, and when he got out he went and killed another family, so it's reasonable to believe that people that live in your walls and haunt you are potential murderers)

    Major Plot Twist: Some houses that were built in the late 1800s (particularly farmhouses) had walls wide enough for you to walk between. And typically, these 2 story houses with attics have spaces you can crawl down (from the attic) to where you end up between the walls. Now, imagine someone (a previous property owner, the original maid, a complete stranger, etc.) stalking the family from between the walls that lead through different passages ways, completely undetected because the only way in or out was covered by a latch door made to look like floorboards located in the attic.

    • @MISTAKEWASMADE4live
      @MISTAKEWASMADE4live 3 ปีที่แล้ว +124

      Before completely demolishing the building they did in fact find a hidden compartment in the attic with a bloody mattock and a knife. I have no doubt it was a person stalking them within the walls, who it was though is hard to say, although circumstances would point to either the neighbor or maid, this wouldn't make a lot of sense, why reveal their cards by calling it out or offering a gun? I think it was someone unknown.

    • @julianeder3383
      @julianeder3383 3 ปีที่แล้ว +89

      @@MISTAKEWASMADE4live I disagree with the unknown person theory.
      4 of the familymembers trusted the perpetrator enough to follow him into the barn alone so the guy was either a good friend family member or he was dressed like a cop. Also he would have had troubles finding the crawlspace in the attic or a place where he could lie low without beein detected which indicates that he had knowledge of the general layout of the house.
      Think about the people who your entire family would trust without any second thoughts in my case there would be a handful of close relatives and maybe about 3 family friends

      Why did they have such huge empty spaces in the walls? I've seen such houses and walked in the walls when I was a kid. As a kid I loved those. Excellent houses for hide and seek. Was it a form of heating isolation?
      Those walls usually had several access points through out the house and also under the house. Even houses today that are very old that people still live in have those. Usually found in a closet behind a door or behind a furniture completely open, no covering what so ever.
      Imagine by accident dropping something behind a furniture, you reach for it and glance into that open space and seeing eyes looking back at you. That gives me crazy chills.

The maid had access to all of the keys in the house and spent hours alone with the kids, she was in the perfect position to plan out something horrible. That's what I was sort of thinking. This was post-WW1 Germany, there were lots of destitute military vets with nowhere to go and no way to make ends meet. I'm sure many of them were suffering from PTSD, felt abandoned and potentially could have been capable of coming unhinged.
      That having been said there's the issue with the dog. The dog was not at all bothered by this intruder which suggests a fair level of familiarity with whoever was getting into their house. There are too many missing variables to come to a concrete solution to that question.
      There's no indication of how frequently the neighbor visited. We never heard what became of the former live in maid. We never learned more backstory as to why the man in the family was so intensely disliked, if there were any estranged family members, etc.

    The stories are well resourced and structured.

    The walls were probably the kind that a person could fit inside. They were made that way back then, Especially in Europe. We do not know when the house was built. Many houses were built so people could hide in the walls in case of invasion of enemies. Often families buy these houses not knowing the interior walls are hollow. There are are also secret rooms in some of them. I would say it was someone that knew the history of the house, that or they found the the original blueprints. It was definitely a human. A spirit would not need food or fire or would it play with the dog.

      I’ve never heard of interior walls being wide enuf to hide inside. I know that in my country, Canada, the interior walls back then were often made of a single layer of 1” lumber that was vertical and was only secured by nails on the ceiling and floor. So they were never very strong but as interior walls they didn’t need to be.

    • @therealchris
      @therealchris 2 ปีที่แล้ว +47

      Nope, never heard of this, never seen this (and I've seen lots of german farmhouses) and it makes absolutely no sense to hide inside of a wall if your house is occupied by an enemy. plus it makes absolutely no sense to reduce your living space by building 2 meter thick walls. it was very common to build double skin exterior walls (since the roman empire) but surely not wide enough to fit somebody inside.

    I was actually wondering how long it would take you to put out this video. The story has haunted me ever since I heard about it a few years back. I am sure it was their daughter’s husband who came back to do the killing. I was shocked that this information was not brought up in your video as I have heard it in other versions but clearly if anyone reads my post here that had not hear the story before then recall their daughter Victoria has 2 children. She was married and had one child her husband was called off to war and while he was gone she gave birth to another child. There was a big question about whether the second child was his or if rumors were true that her youngest child was the result of incest with Victoria’s father Andreas. They were told he died in battle but no body was ever found . So there is a possibility that he did survive and just did not get back to his family until after he heard of the local rumors about the second child not being her husbands but rather her father. So possibly he returned to the family farm and decided to kill all of them. This may explain why he kidnapped the oldest child to see her again and decide if she was his or possibly the father’s too. It would explain the unknown newspaper in the family home. It would explain why he stayed there long enough to try to confirm the sexual relationship of his wife and her father. It would explain the keys and footprints up to the home. It would explain why the mattock was likely used on the toolbox lock and the murders too. You see, Andreas made the mattock that was used to murder the family. Almost like spiteful towards the father “I will use the tool you made to kill you and your family”. Creepy big time!!!! Lastly it would explain how he would know the make up of the farm and why he may have stayed and cared for the animals etc. The craziest thing to me is who would want to live in a house even if it be overnight for a week after they lay dead there inside and out in the barn. It doesn’t matter, having dead bodies laying around you as you go about your business is so damn creepy. LOL great job Mr. Ballen keep up the great work!!!!

    • @phoxgames5800
      @phoxgames5800 3 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      You would think then that the child who was lost would have been able to recollect that her dad or at least that some strange man had taken her. That is also a long time to hide out on the property or with in the house and not be noticed. My initial thought had been like the one where the teen daughters ex boyfriend lived in their walls and such, but a 1920s German farmhouse I'm not sure if it would be possible to live in the walls. I'm pretty sure they would have been too thin.
      But it also doesn't come off paranormal with the weapon of choice, so who knows what a soldier of war would know how to do. Thank you for this information.

      So, the husband would have killed his own child, too, along with everyone else. I don't know...what about the former maid? If she was a psychopath with an axe to grind against the family, she could've killed all of them, children included. They weren't her children, so why not butcher them, too? There have been women who've done some horrible things.

    I actually think it was Viktoria's husband who Ballen didn't elude to in the story. He was claimed to have died in the war but the body was never recovered. Viktoria ended up having her two children with a different man. Husband may have found out & took out the whole family hence why he had no quarrel killing children because they weren't his & a reminder of her betrayal.

      No, the husband died during the 1st World War. The daughter was in fact his biological daughter.
      Some people assume that it may have been the man who fathered the 2nd child.

      There was a big rumor that Viktoria was having an incestuous affair with her father, in fact she was fined and her father spent a month in jail for it because of the rumors

      😂🤣 RIGHT! It’s not the stories, that freak me out.... It’s those damn pictures! And sadly I always catch upon these stories late at night, usually still have to take the dogs out to run and potty before bed, and often still have a few last min chores I need to finish... Did I mention, we own and lease 2 working horse farms, both surrounded by woods, and kind private, the one we lease is 80acres of property, 60 solid woods, no electricity, and very cut off, almost in a other worldly way from any surrounding homes. So if we have an issue like a sick horse or something I have to make late night checks on, being as my husband works full time, and has to be up early and off to work.. The late night checks or overnight stays out there are always me alone, with my 3 dogs and my shotgun lol. It’s very secluded and can be a bit creepy. It’s on the river, so there’s always lots of different nights sounds, and those nights when the fog rolls in, it’s straight out of nightmares lol. Add to that all the locals swearing the place is haunted. If I didn’t love that property and my horses so much, I likely would have quit leasing it a long time ago. Plus I’m not smart enough to also not listen to these or my other fav horror story narrators on the drive there. 😂

    That was a thought out planned attack/raid. Precise and tactical and the killer’s confidence is displayed from them living in the home.

    You do for people what camp fire stories did for people before the internet. Your oratory style is exactly what the good story teller sounded like back in the day.

      Thank you, just listened to that...sure sounds like Lorenz, the neighbor's son and father of Victoria's little boy, was the killer. What do you think? I think he has the most motive, and even his brother thought he was guilty.
