The girl in this movie was actually a gymnast in some point in her life but never told anyone that worked on this movie. And the director wanted something to scare the people in the audience during the bedroom scene. So she did that back bending scene without telling them and scared the crap out of everyone during filming. She later said during an interview.

Wrong! Not a gymnast. The word you're looking for is contortionist.
A contortionist can bend their body (naturally) in ways that look unnatural. The greatest gymnasts can never bend their bodies like a contortionist.
Scenes in movies/TV shows of people bending in weird, unnatural ways are normally contortionists (not gymnasts).

I'm not sure if they performed an autopsy on anneliese, but I know my friends mother experienced seeing people looking like demons when she looked directly at them, Drs finally discovered that she actually had a brain tumour, once they removed the tumour her hallucinations actually stopped. I honestly believe this young woman was suffering from sepsis or a bad infection in her body. My mother went through almost a similar thing when she got an infection in her leg. She was going through memory loss, speaking random languages, she would have seizures, she would hallucinate, she would talk about hearing voices, she wouldn’t act like herself, she was very angry. My mother survived but the doctors kept turning their backs on her until we got her to a university type hospital (over a year from when it all started) which they found fungus eating and growing under her skin on her leg and causing her to be sepsis. Infections can cause the body to go through weird stuff

My sister in law is diagnosed with schizophrenia. She gets "visits" sometimes. I'll never forget one of those visits. It was July and we were sitting in the sun. It's hot. All of a sudden my entire body is covered in goosebumbs. As if on que she says," The lady in white is here."
All I am saying is there is a fine line between mental illness, being gifted, or haunted. I really do believe that gifted people are sometimes labled mental. I also believe mental states can open one up more to the unknown. That is not always a good thing..

I agree with you 100%! My daughter hears voices and suffers from sleep paralysis where she’d wake with scratches on her back and neck. The voices used to be dark and groanful and used to scare her endlessly. We started talking about the possibility that she’s able to hear different dimensional energies, that perhaps it’s a gift. We started meditating and I encouraged her to allow the voices to speak instead of trying to shut them out. Somethings changed. The voice is a woman’s and it’s become softer and more caring. She said it sometimes sounds like I’m in the room with her.
Now this hasn’t curbed the sleep paralysis so much but it happens a little less. Poor thing. She’ll go days with no sleep...I’ll just stay up with her on certain nights.
I don’t know if any of this makes sense to anyone but I think you might understand a little bit of what I’m saying.
Your sister is lucky to have you in her life. Someone who isn’t just shrugging or writing her off. I’m convinced there’s way more to schizophrenia than just mental “illness” per se.

      Sequoyah Hilderbrand
I use to have sleep paralysis. Do you know of the white light of protection? She needs to put one over herself every night. Also, tell her to do this next time she notices she is heading into paralysis to start think affirmations. Basically she needs to tell herself things not necessarily as she sees them but as she wants them to be. Say these things to herself as if they are 100% true. Your brain is in theta state at that point and she can literally reprogram herself.

He was no trouble, acted normally, he was quite but most people were including me.. Then one day he had been acting normally all morning and in the afternoon he had an attack, i will always remember him walking past me and i had to look 3 times at him as his whole face had changed.. It was scary how much his face actually changed and when i seen him later on that night, he was back to "normal"... He had become a whole new person, new voice with his new face.. I had become fascinated with car and bike crashes, so i was watching a video 2\3years later, two guys crashed, "DRAG RACERS" who crash at near the 300mph mark, these two guys, separate crashes but the look on both guys face changed me that day, i never seen my face that day BUT once i saw the look on their faces i knew it was the look of death that i had... Shortly after, we were studying at my place and she stayed the night because I lived super close to the university. In the middle of the night I woke up to the bed shaking , she was sleeping next to me and had gone into a massive seizure. Convulsing like in that one horrible scene from the movie. I immediately called emergency service and they spent 40 minutes trying to bring her back to consciousness, to no avail. She was taken to hospital and spent a week in ICU. She regained consciousness the 3rd day. Diagnosis: severe temporal lobe epilepsy with nightly seizures that she wouldn’t wake up from without medical help. After that, she, her boyfriend and I took a first aid course together to be able to anticipate or administer adequate first aid while emergency is en route.

She did seek psychiatric treatment remember? They even attempted medications and that seemed to work for awhile. Then signs and symptoms returned but far worse this time. They tried to temper or reverse these symptoms with increased dosages of the meds that allowed her to live a normal life for a while. Sadly the medication didn't have the same affects as last time and her condition worsened.
I don't think she really had a mental illness. I do think she was possessed and you don't have to be Catholic to believe it. I don't do devils and angels. I do believe in positive and malignant entities because we are made of energy. I do believe these entities can possess the sensitive and the foolish who invite it among us.

As somebody who suffers from seizures (though not very often) I can tell you they're absolutely terrifying to experience. It feels like you're dying and you can hardly control yourself, you can't scream for help, you can't crawl to help, you just have to hope and pray you're not about to die, especially if you're in a dangerous space.
I had a small seizure recently while letting my dog out, and my phone fell out of my pocket just out of reach. I couldn't stand up after, and I could hardly crawl so I was screaming for help after it stopped. Luckily my neighbor was coming outside and saw me on the ground and helped me back up to my apartment, even though I could barely walk, lost my balance, and fell down my concrete stairs, he practically carried me to my bed, brought my dog up, and put his number in my phone so I could call him if I needed anything. Seizures are horrifying, especially if no one is there to help you

I know that feeling all too well. Most times I have no memory of the seizures. But in 2008 I had one similar to yours, while holding my infant daughter. It was horrifying to feel it coming on, attempting to safely place my daughter on the ground, attempting to speak but hearing this chilling moan come out- and then losing consciousness. I think I'm actually traumatized from that seizure tbh. Mostly cuz my now ex husband triggered the seizure by arguing with me about feeding our baby with his back to me; then neglected to get me medical attention; and pushed my arms down during the seizure, causing me to be barely able to lift my arms for 1-2 days afterwards.

I can imagine how terrified this poor girl was to see and feel all of those things without any explanation or care aside from accusatory fanatical drivel from her mother, who should have moved mountains for her child and sought better medical care for her. A lot of neurological and especially psychiatric medications have severe side effects as well, including hallucinations and suicidal and homicidal ideation. Hell, even late Ian Curtis of Joy Division killed himself while on anti seizure drugs, and this girl was put through multiple medication courses like a lab rat. I had hallucinations for years, since i was a child, audio and visual ones, doctors kept putting me on all sorts of different tablets for a number of "psychotic" illnesses that fucked with my body, i gained loads of weight which to this day i still struggle with. Some made me lactate at 15, all sorts of things, one day a psychiatrist decided just to check all bases and said i should be tested for epilepsy. My family and i were sure it wasn't but we went anyway and turns out it was indeed epilepsy. My neurologist called it "unique". Whenever i had audio and visual hallucinations i was actually having a seizure. I sometimes wouldn't see my parents as good people, i saw them as people coming to get me and i was terrified and would scream and push them away from me. I hit my head and bang it against walls. It was me having a seizure. I'd had these hallucinations since i was around 6ish and i didn't get diagnosed until i was 18, had to sell my car and surrender my license which i had literally just gotten, it was all heart breaking but also i was just happy to KNOW what was happening to me and i wasn't going crazy as i was lead to believe for so many years.
The epilepsy theory on this is probably more accurate and likely than possession but who knows maybe its all real, we may never know

To be fair, as an extremely religious family I think it’s commendable that they went to an actual doctor and psychologist rather than going straight to possession and exorcism. Not to say the later decisions were rational, but hindsight is 20/20 and at the time this was happening they didn’t have the scientific and medical knowledge to give a logical explanation as to what was happening.

Don't kid yourself, psychologists and medical experts still don't have the answers for these things, as they are of a spiritual nature. I've heard it said many times by scientists and medical experts, that the more we learn, the less we know. There's a reason for that, there is in fact a spiritual realm that is beyond our comprehension, and it just amazes me the determination and extremes people pursue to deny God.

    • @jendoe9436
      @jendoe9436 ปีที่แล้ว

In the Catholic church, those claiming demonic possession or experience actually do have to go through medical and mental evaluations first. This is to make sure the victim is getting the proper care they need so they can recover. As medical understanding has increased, so has the criteria but sometimes it can be a “chicken or egg” scenario where the physical could be mistaken for the demonic, or the demonic results in the physical. Could be a combination sometimes as well.
Exorcist priests aren’t usually called in unless other natural means are exhausted or in emergency situations. The Church has rubrics and training for these priests, and those guys actually have to go through intense spiritual training and fortitude before they confront a demon.
Sounds like her family went through what they could and then the Church sent someone further up to see if there was anything demonic involved. Given the limited resources and time it takes to get a priest prepared, I’m inclined to believe the poor girl did suffer from some sort of possession.

I personnaly think, it was the religious delusion of her parents, that made her illness much more worse. But you have to be aware of the fact that in the 60s the mental clinics have been not the best places. There are many reports about the bad treading of patients. Many different types of epilepsy. You may not experience trace like states. I know a few people with epilepsy and they all present different types of seizures. One does trance like states as well as full convulsive seizures. The way it was explained in this video is that she was not seeing and hearing things during the seizure but the mis balance and issues causing the seizures would cause hallucinations in general. Without being a medical practitioner and studying the patient for your self that is not a call you can make.

    1. It's funny that just before watching this video, I've watched one about the nine types of angels, which reminded me that Lucifer and the demons were in fact, dedicated godly creatures before falling
    2. I wonder if Anneliese had both epilepsy and schizophrenia, as I knew two persons which had to dealt with demons during their lives, one had schizophrenia, the other psychosis, and unfortunately, medication didn't alleviate their delusions completely

What is noteworthy is that Annelise had these episodes not just 20 years ago but 1976. This gives a lot of room for speculation for the reliability of the medical support that was available to her.
And the other noteworth, thing is that exorcism wasn't really a "thing", but came more as a trend, since the movie "the exorcist" came out 1973.

It makes me wonder if there's something about that that is buried deep in the human psyche, or somehow linked to the paranormal.
When I was in college I was friends with a girl who went to the Amazon and partook in an ayahuasca ritual with a native shaman. According to her, she journeyed to the underworld, and while she was there she had a spirit guide that had a vaguely humanoid form, that walked upside down on the ground on all fours and was covered in a black carapace, almost like an insect, or like one of the xenomorphs from the Alien franchise.

This is absolutely fascinating. I have been a nurse for almost 40 years with the last 30 spent in pediatrics. The human brain, especially in children, is an amazing structure. I have seen many kids with brain injuries and disease, especially some forms of encephalitis, act in ways as if they are possessed. I remember one 3 year old girl in particular whose parents brought her to us from Mexico under duress from relatives after unsuccessful exorcisms. They had her room completely covered in religious icons and were reluctant to allow us to do anything to care for her. But she was in our pediatric ICU on a ventilator. Because of the breathing tube, she was unable to vocalize, but she could and would at times mouth words around the tube. She was not on any sedation but at times would be completely unresponsive to voice, touch, or even deep sternal rubs which are meant to illicit a pain response. She would go from this comatose state to thrashing, attempting to roll and arching her back almost to the point of "levitating" off the bed. I am a 100% believer in science and maybe .00001% in religion, but I can appreciate that she completely "appeared" to be possessed. It was hard to keep her safe during these episodes, but was an amazing thing to witness. After aggressive medical treatment, she did recover but I have no idea what became of her after leaving the hospital. Thank you Mr Ballen for all of your engaging stories!!

I believe that it could have been Possession or an Illness, or perhaps a combination like others have posted. When I was a kid I used to always hear scratching in the walls, at night when I went to bed while I lay with my eyes open I would see faces floating in the room, I had my first experience with Sleep Paralysis when I was around 14yo, at the time I had no idea there was a name for it, I could move my eyes, but nothing else, when I looked down I didn't look like me, so I closed my eyes and began praying the lords prayer that I had learnt at the Pentecostal Church I went to, after some time, no idea how long, I could feel something changing and started trying to scream, eventually I was able to. At some point I started sleep walking, I would sometimes remember but not always, I remember being kneeled down on the floor, staring at my brother's face, other times I was told that I had slept walked, but didn't remember. When I was 18yo I started getting small scratches, cuts, and punctures on my arms and hands, I was at Eppie's in Sacramento I felt a strange sensation on my hand, so I lifted my hand, and looked at it, while I was looking at my hand, a cut about an inch long appeared... I was 19 and riding a public bus in Modesto, heading to the Greyhound station to take a bus to Sacramento, which is were I lived, after I boarded the bus, while I was heading back to find a seat a woman stood up, she introduced her self, "Hi Tim, my name is (I was not wearing a name tag, and no one else on the bus had said my name...)" she went on to tell me that I was being attacked by creatures on the Astral Plane while I was sleeping, and asked to look at the marks, I showed her. She said that she was the Apprentice of an Apache Shaman and was sent to get my permission to protect me, after speaking to her for a few minutes I said yes, please, and thank you. I had never seen her before that, I have never seen her again, the scratching in the walls stopped, the faces in the dark stopped, never had sleep paralysis again, and no more cuts, or bites that appeared from nothing. I'm 54 now.
My heart goes out to Anneliese I don't cry often, but I broke down after watching The Exorcism of Emily Rose, I thank God that it never got that bad for me, and I hope that she found peace in Gods embrace.

If someone has dissociative identity disorder (DID) previously known as multiple personality disorder, it's only caused by a severe, ongoing trauma experienced by a young child, causing the psyche to fail to "gel" into unified personality. The brain compartmentalizes itself and fractures into pieces before that psychological developmental stage where one's identity coalesces into a single dominant identity. It's not impossible for her to have suffered an undocumented ongoing trauma as a young child. It is actually quite common for people suffering with DID to have alternate personalities or "alters" that are formed around psychological concepts of suffering or evil or aggression, alongside the alters whose origins are in the ideas of things like hope and mothering and escape and heroism. So! all that to say that it would fit, based on her religious upbringing, if her subconscious mind latched onto those figures as having important meaning in her life due to whatever she went through, IF, big if, she actually did have DID. Now that she has passed and the state of psychological science was really undeveloped at that point in time, I can't say there's a solid way to know.

First is the person knowing it's coming, the seizure itself, then recovery. Recovery takes several minutes before the patient can even comprehend what just happened. They are confused, weak and embarrassed. You don't just hop up after a seizure and start doing stuff. It usually requires at a day of rest to be completely comfortable again.

I think the possession was “real.” At least to her it was real. Sometimes we forget that reality is not a set standard for all. Perception is reality, and no two people perceive things the same way. I’d like to see an autopsy report, just to confirm/deny a physiological cause (I.e. tumor). If the medical and religious worked together, she possibly could have found some type of recovery. Instead those two powers focus on proving themselves right and not healing.

I agree a solution could have possibly been found for her, especially between science and religion as they do not exist separately, but I do not agree our perception is reality. We may believe it is real in these more odd situations, but a room of people can typically agree on reality. It’s similar to accepting that people have “your truth,” or “my truth.” There are not separate truths. Some may be able to exist in parallel because they are congruent, but facts are facts, not different for each person.

When I was14, and my dad was dying of cancer, a former teacher took me to see “The Exorcist”. I was in a vulnerable place, and the sounds in that movie scared the sh*t out of me at least as much as the visuals. We lived in a 150 year old house at the time, and I had to go upstairs with my back literally against the wall because the stairs would pop behind me after stepping on them. As an adult I’ve forced myself to watch the damn thing, starting on mute, gradually working up to sound, so I could desensitize myself and lose the fear I still had.
I was listening to this Mr. Ballen video as I was making dinner and I swear the film and real voice were extraordinarily similar. I saw this film and was scared, but not as much as a 14yo. Jennifer Connolly was amazing in TEOER. I honestly waver on whether or not Annelise had possession or mental health issues. Maybe both, but the Catholic church sure sets people up for this stuff. I know other cultures believe in and treat possessions, but the papist organization is extraordinarily manipulative. To be honest, the audio is really hard to understand, because she is so loud and it messes with the intelligibility. Maybe some of my fellow germans are able to understand more than I do. Please let me know!
And I hope that my non-german-speaking friends got a little bit more insight on what she was saying (screaming) about :)

Nice work fellow german Ballen-Fan. Let me join in and give some fixes for what Anneliese said:
Normal Anneliese:" Ja, ich will auch für die anderen Leiden, damit die netten Jüden kommen und so..." ("Yes, I want to suffer for people, so that nice jews would come and so on...)
Cain: "Ich hab meinen Bruder geschlagen." ("I hit my brother")
Judas:"Die, die müssen in eigenen Seminaren ausgebildet werden, die dürfen nicht auf die anderen Universitäten, kapiert?" ("They, they have to be taught in their own seminars, they are not allowed to go to other universities. Got that?")

Is it just me or is there nothing about those recordings that even come close to showing something supernatural?
I mean that shows a pretty damn unhinged person so not saying everything is fine there, but they all sound pretty much the same and nothing about them is outside of what we know people are capable of.

Look up the story of Genie Wiley. She is the poster child that we learned about in graduate school, but she is by no means the only one. You shared the story of the Russian girl who was raised by dogs. There are lots of true stories out there about children being abandoned by their human parents or so horrifically abused by them that they just sort of either break - or they find the resilience. But resilience is a known factor among social workers - or at least we seem to believe we do. 😂 It has everything to do with how much support, community, and love that one feels like they have or even deserve to have. And in bad cases like this…tragically, she seemed to have no support. Neither did Genie Wiley. Or look up the story about Mary Ellen, which is the first documented case of child abuse in the United States. We had to study that case, too. She was the first poster child for abuse. At the time, in the early 1970’s, children had less rights than cows did. In order to have this child removed from her home of abuse, the missionaries and passers by who witnessed this child being abused every day had to turn to the ASPCA. There were no laws at that time about child rights. But cows and dogs had rights (as well they should also. I am not disparaging that at all.) Do these two women had to go the the ASPCA to secure some kind of legal rights to remove Mary Ellen from her home where she was being abused! Oh, no. Don’t abuse the cow that we are going to slaughter and eat later. But God forbid that anyone asks me about how I treat my child!! 🙄

I lived in a very creepy haunted house when I was younger with my siblings and mother . Cuppords slamming stomping around the house all night long knocking on the doors ect. In the short time we lived in this home I developed epilepsy and it was at its worst when I lived in this house. I remember watching the exorcism of Emily rose with my sisters and as she was having a convulsion on screen I dead ass started having a seizure. Such a spooky house . So glad we packed up and moved out of there.

When I was young we lived in a turn of the century (1899) home that was absolutely haunted. I had a ghost that would lift my bed off of the floor, and suddenly drop it after I fell asleep. I don't miss that house.

We don't have a haunted house culture in my country, although there's plenty of castles, mansions, historical buildings, and just old houses where generations have lived. Neither do we have a history of alien abduction. Probably immune to any culture-bound syndrome

In this case it does, but mostly the "based on a real story" is a very thin statement by Hollywood. It almost never should be interpreted as "following a real story"!
But often it makes you think about the real story and how sad the suffering and ending truely is.
