Yup! Love the unnecessary background music, straight forward, telling us a story as if we were hanging out together in person. Seems like an extremely genuine guy!
The simple fact that this man can tell an entire story with out using “um” is absolutely wonderful! Rare to find an articulate storyteller anymore. Thankyou
*[!!!SPOILER! DO NOT READ TIL THE VIDEO ENDS!!!]* He spent two months living in a family's walls, spying on them, messing with them, rearranging the furniture, ransacking the house, gluing pennies to the ceiling, and wearing a dead woman's clothing. The real mystery here, is how he was ever allowed back out into society.
Well, the criminal justice system is so lax that it doesn't surprise me that this happened. I'm sure that loser was put away for life after his heinous act. Gives me the creeps!
Assuming he doesn't die in prison, he's due to be released in 2033. He will be 62 years old. I'm going to call it now and say that shortly after he is released, he will kill again. While I'm certainly torn on the issue, this is really the strongest argument for the DP.
I think the reason we’re all hooked on Ballen is that he doesn’t repeat parts of the story over and over like true crime television shows do. We’re probably the same group that used to watch those shows. On top of the benefit of not treating us like we forgot the story when they went to commercial, Mr. Ballen treats the victims with respect and dignity and even backs his compassion with a nonprofit for victims. I don’t think I could ever listen to anyone else tell these stories at this point.
I agree but also, his storytelling ability is AMAZING. That along with the sound effects he puts behind everything going on in the story. So immersive.
Storytelling is a skill this man has mastered. You can feel how invested he is in every story. He conveys the empathy. I would listen to a story about grocery shopping from him
His vocal tone, timbre and annunciation are addictive. I for one want to hear his life story, atleast his service in the navy. Even if it was mundane it would sound exquisite.
Finding a man in my daughter's closet, wearing my dead wife's clothes and carrying a hatchet would be one of the most terrifying things I could ever imagine finding.
Yeah, it’s very easy to Monday morning quarterback what I “would have done”, but I probably would have ended up suffering a blow from that hatchet because I don’t know that anything other than fight or flight fatherly instincts would’ve been going on in my Neanderthal brain. Considering all the circumstances and that he was in his own house I feel like my reaction most likely would’ve been fight especially seeing him in my dead wife’s clothes. But I very well may have peed and froze in fear instead lol.
@@John5.56 Thank you for being honest with both randoms on the internet and yourself. I also work on sheerly fight or flight, and yeah, it often can misfire. And I do suffer full blown anxiety attacks because there is nothing to run from and nobody to fight. And yeah, we ALL like to say "I'd feed him his own teeth with my knuckles" but having a dead fiancee.. If I saw some dude dressed up in her old clothes holding a hatchet.. I honestly have no clue how I would react.. If I had children.. Well, it would be something of a fighting retreat depending.. And getting police to deal with it then would be the logical thing. As nobody can be a real father from the inside of a jail cell. I have no kids as of yet and SERIOUSLY hope I NEVER have some cross dressing perverted psycho take secret residence inside my walls... And honestly, fists, feet, arms and legs all make excellent targets for a hatchet so.. RUN.. (Let's all be realistic here, NOBODY is going to be 'packing heat' all hours of the day and have such a thing already in hand for such a random effing situation).
I just Googled him and come across this in one of the articles; “Because of his strange behavior, LaPlante was sent by school officials to a psychiatrist. At this point LaPlante was diagnosed with hyperactivity disorder. This problem could have been easily solved, but the young man began to suffer sexual abuse from his own psychiatrist during sessions.” WOW. Just imagine if he had gotten the help he needed from someone that wasn’t…well, him. This is just so sad and disturbing all around.
Damn.. Yeah this all most likely wouldn't happen if the help he received wouldn't make things worse.. I can't imagine a certified psychiatrist sexually abusing a client! That person is equally responsible for these monstrous acts that lead out of this

He tells stories like we’re all chilling around a campfire drinking a beer together. I enjoy how he creates a mood without the need for background music, also he enters the listeners' space almost as if he was in the same room. So glad I discovered his channel.
Only one I agree with is #3, his story telling. He doesn't hem and haw, stumble over his words and doesn't bother with a bunch of woo woo crap or embellishments. He tells them in a straight forward manner.
People living in your house isn’t common, but it happens FAR more often than you’d think. If stuff is being moved around your house and/or you’re having to justify inconsistencies, I think the safest bet is to lean into the crazy and search the place thoroughly. It’s probably not true, but it’s never bad to assume the worst case scenario and be wrong.
my friend in his detroit apt set up cameras and gave up.. everyone called him paranoid. He’d come home to all the SD cards being swiped every single time and the latch to the attic being opened. His door latch was broken and never fully repaired the whole time he lived there cause that’s landlords and maintenance for you. It’s an awful circumstance that basically makes the victim feel like their own home doesn’t belong to them and provides no real security while everyone else calls you loco.
My first thought would be, “there’s someone in the fucking walls” if that was happening to me 😂😂 that was literally where the tapping was coming from?!?!
This was a real terrifying story. I find stories like this involving real mortal human beings far more terrifying than ghosts, demons, paranormal, etc.
@Poppa Perc Well, based on thr many stories the so called "paranormal" is also very predictsble I.e. seeing apparitions, hearing strange sounds, etc. Assuming. It even exists the paranormal is scary but rarely hurts anyone. Human beings can be more sinister, diabolical, and are capable of almost anything. To.me thr idea of.another human lurking in the shadows, or hiding in my house, creeping around at night would scare.me.far.more than am alleged ghost. And if a person is harmed it almost always goinf to be at the ha ds of a person . Human behavior can be extremely unpredictable and deadly. The person you may trust one minute could be harming you the next minute.

@@99WingedTigers Maybe but personally I don;t belive in the devil or anything supernatural. Mind I am not trying to say they don't exist. It's just that I have yet to see any convincing evidence that they do. However, I have seen plenty of evidence that other mortal humans can and will terrorize, brutalize, abuse and kill.
For everyone who's asking, "WHY DID THEY LET HIM OUT?!?", here's why: Ironically, it was the system trying to put him away, for good, that ended up setting him free... In the Juvenile system, he would've been locked up till he was at least 18, or possibly 21. But they knew he was dangerous. They decided to charge him as an adult, with 4 charges of kidnapping, 4 charges of armed assault, breaking and entering, larceny, & malicious destruction of property. He'd be lucky (or unlucky) to grow old enough to finish his sentence. HERE'S THE KICKER: Being charged as an adult made him eligible to post bail, which his mother paid for, and that's how he got out. He was released in Oct. 1987. He committeded the murders on Dec. 1, 1987, just weeks after getting out.
Thanks Regina, I just thought it was yet another case of letting out an evil psycho dangerous scumbag when he should have never seen the light of day again. The police did the right thing charging him with all of that, but unfortunately the courts completely failed the public yet again (far too damned often). I fear that this will never change until something like this happens to somebody with a large public profile, high up in the supreme court (as they have no apathy towards the general public).
@@Stampedby__bonetti if we were to just believe every random occurrence, we would still be dumb bcuz a lot of overblown stories in history when looked into by an expert turned out to be a disappointing over-exaggeration and we looked like idiots for just readily believing it without any proof. humans are not stupid for not readily believing every OVERBLOWN story, it only means we need clarity to believe. That's why we have evidence, it allows us to believe the unbelievable, then act accordingly. That's not a sign of our species getting dumber that's a sign of us getting smarter and wiser. if we did not have the facilitation of evidence and just refused to believe in general, then we would be considered a stupid and in-denial species.
To be fair, our brains don’t want to believe things like that could really be happening. We search for logical explanations to not only ourselves but our loved ones aswell. It’s not until we see something undeniable that we truly understand we need to act.
I mean logic, and reason just tell you that something like this can’t possibly be happening. Even if you did hear tapping in the walls, your first thought would be there’s some kind of plumbing leak, or a rat, or squirrel even that had somehow got in there. You’d come up with a million different perfectly rational explanations for what it was. I guarantee your first thought wouldn’t be that your daughter’s psycho ex boyfriend is hiding in your walls stalking your family.
Yeah, I'd like to know how a crazy person gets locked up and is released to become a cold blooded killer. Did he date a girl in that family too? Was it someone that participated in his trial? Where is the crazy bass-turd now?
Chris Ruthford, the kid was not insane. The clinical definition of insanity is a person who is unable to distinguish fantasy from reality, another nickname for it is Delirium. The kid is a sociopath, which is someone who lacks the chemicals in the brain that cause guilt, remorse, and shame. Because of this, sociopaths will often murder for something as simple as being misunderstood because they don't feel any negative consequences when they do kill. Even if they're locked up, they don't see it as a punishment. Sociopaths see prison as a free room, food, and water. They don't see prison as punishment because they can't. But they CAN still feel anger, so he probably killed the other family because he was angry that the family of his ex locked him up, because in his eyes he didn't think he did anything wrong. So he got angry, killed another family because of it, and then got caught and locked up forever.
I honestly love the internet because it is the only place where a good looking, ex navy seal, can tell me spooky bed time stories and no one judges me for it.
Idk he looks pretty soft for a ex navy seal. The typical navy seal has a certain macho alpha attitude this guy seems like your avg Joe. Maybe a navy seal tryout lol big facts
So lemme get this straight ... some guy terrorises a family for months, lives in their house, dresses up like Norman Bates with a hatchet and hides in the closet. Essentially, shows he's totally crazy and is very close to slaughtering an entire family ... so you catch him, then a bit later are like "Yeah, he's all good. Back to society for you my friend." I mean ... here's an idea. If someone is acting out Psycho obsessively, DON'T LET THEM OUT OF PRISON, because Psycho WAS NOT A FAMILY MOVIE.
@@ThatMans-anAnimal Not every story he tells is made up, I usually avoid his more supernatural focused stories because they are all BS but when it comes to known criminals he's usually more diligent.
To me, the most addictive part of these is the way it's told. I like the suspense and mystery and then the chilling and hair-raising climax. It's pretty depressing and traumatic that these events legitimately happened to people and affected them and likely traumatized them for life. It's like morbidly fascinating. You have to go into these also being ready to feel empathy for the victims and the unthinkable things they have been through.
this reminds me of another family. i cant mind where they lived, but the little girl kept telling her dad that someone kept watching her through the patio doors in her room at night. The dad thought she was having nightmares or making it up so didn't do anything. Then one day it had been snowing and he noticed footsteps leading up to his daughters patio and then leading away. HE followed them to a neighbours house, and it turned out it was their teenage son. Every night for god knows how long, he sneaked out his house, walked to the little girls room and watched her sleep. That gave me the fears, but this story is something else. Imagine someone watching you 24/7 from what is meant to be the safety of your own home...
Imagine seeing someone in you daughters room with a hatchet warring your dead wife's clothes. I'm surprised this guy didn't just break down on the spot. That's an image that would lead to someone breaking down I'm sure.
I check my locks and windows a lot more after watching some of your videos. And they're a good reminder to not be too dismissive with your gut feeling or your kids. You should really be sponsored by a security camera company

This is an incredibly scary but also sad story. This family had a very lucky escape and I hope the girls and thier father are now finding peace. Once again thank you for this brilliant content and the passion you put into your story telling.
I am soooo grateful that my parents and grandparents believed me as a child when I say I saw something or I had a bad feeling about something or someone. I know those girls felt deep hurt that their own father didn't belive them, and I know the father had to feel deep guilt with the knowledge that him brushing them off could have cost them their lives.
Its a good thing Daniel Laplante didnt attacked the father with the axe. Probably because the two girls are not inside the house so his horrific plan of massacring them all wont be complete.
I can say the same with my father I've seen shadow men twice in my life and the first time if it wasn't for a friend standing next to me that I turn to and asked if he is seeing what I'm seeing in broad daylight on a hot summer day I would assume I was seeing things and the last time I ever been through the paranormal was a abandoned house with a aberration of a woman with a her eyes stitched shut and lastly as a skeptical person if it was for a friend with me seeing the same and the screems she made that sounded almost like a mountain lion I would of just thought I was seeing shit and my mind is playing tricks on my. Let's just say it's rare but the supernatural dose exist. Just obviously don't believe everyone you hear and always be skeptical but just know it dose exist just be careful

I've lived my life in the small town this happened in. I love that this story started backwards with the mystery.... the whole time I was like, man this sounds so familiar.... then I heard danny laplante. wow, this story is actually even more weird than this. worth the internet scrolling. way to cover my hometown mystery!! love this channel.
Is there any chance you could take a look in the house? Presuming it's not currently occupied ... Like myself there are many people in the comments here who are having a hard time understanding the layout of the place and how there was enough space for him inside the walls to gain access to seemingly room, Ive worked in construction and some very old houses but never seen anywhere that would be possible to do what he did
It actually didn't start backwards. It started right from the beginning of the story. If it started backwards it would have started with Danny killing the family and then reverse itself to him being in a mental institution, then reverse itself to living in the walls of the house.
I knew it was going to get worse when he said "when Danny got out of the juvenile detention facility-" like, first of all, who decided that was a sound idea?
And it was in 1987, the same year they found him. Maybe he turned 18 and erased his juvenile record. Gave him a clean slate for his 18th birthday. It could be anything though. With our court system there is never a rhyme or reason for their decisions from one case to the next. And when you think they do make the right decision, half the time they’re reversing stuff or changing course.
Your storytelling style is exactly what makes you my favorite dark-theme TH-camr. Sounds like that one story from Japan where a man, who was living alone, noticed that food etc. went missing in his appartement, so he installed a camera to see if he can capture the intruder on "tape". He found out that when he left for work, an elderly woman would come out of hidding, eat, take a shower and then return into hidding (if i remember correctly she hid inside a part of his furniture). Actually, if you think about where the phrase comes from (a literal writing on the wall scenario from the book of Daniel), then it really has the exact same meaning. As a colloquialism, it's used to refer to metaphorical writings on the wall (a sign of impending doom), but it gets its meaning from the story of Belshazzar's feast, in which a hand appears and writes a message on the wall telling Belshazzar his days are numbered as a result of his blasphemy.
I know this is late but this is my biggest fear. I made my bf check all of our crawl spaces before we moved into our current home, because I am terrified of this exact thing 😂

"I know you're grieving, but you're just kids so you must be lying. Why don't you stop being crazy instead?" - Great parenting of the 80's and popular trait in horror movies.
Listen dawg, kids going through a psychotic grieving period is 1000x more likely than a psycho in a dress living in their insulation. I know the story is told in a way where the whole time you know the kids are right, but come on the dad had all the right to be concerned about his kids mental health first. This dad did great in his parenting and you really can’t blame him
@@Andrewkosche You're right, psychotic grieving is more probable. If that was the case, a parent can't expect to children just "get over this", they don't know how. They would need counseling, especially when dad is working a lot and cannot help them. I mentioned parenting of the 80', because people were less aware about the freaks and psychos of this world. They often thought that children have vivid imagination or that the neighbor is so friendly, he can't be dangerous.
@@Andrewkosche You know what's more likely than either of those things? Rats in the walls. At least call a fucking exterminator before you assume your children are insane.

Imagine how that poor father feels. He thought it was his daughters the whole time trying to cope with the loss of their mother. Forcing them into counseling. Months go by just to find out some psychopath has been living in their walls messing with them the whole time. Remembering the encounter he had with him in his daughters room. Like that very well could have been the end of his daughters or even his life. That poor father will have to live with that guilt for the rest of his life.
I believe "forcing" is a strong word here. Everyone should go to grief counseling after a death, it truly helps to have a support system that can help you cope with these alien feelings. The reason why everyone doesn't do that is because of the stigma against mental health making people think their weak for seeking help.
@@jeffwoods4406 while I agree, it was against their will therefore "force" is the correct word. I think the father made the right choice though and while I think we should always do our best to respect anyones autonomy regardless of age, sometimes as a parent that's just not the best option
This channel is the most positive addiction I’ve seen. This pathetic idiot disregarded his daughters at every turn, he's a failure.
It’s not the dads fault in this, due to the fact he had to do everything and more for his children. So his children are fine, so it’s not the dads fault even if he did something that dads shouldn’t do but they all make mistakes.
@@TheRoadhammer379 yeah but I mean, it's really hard to imagine that someone could actually be living in your house completely unseen for MONTHS, and because of the ouija board he thought they were referring to a ghost which is even more unbelievable. Also, it's not completely unnatural for kids do and say certain things to deal with grief. So yes, it would have helped a lot for him to have believed them sooner, but we can't put all the blame on him, instead put all the blame on Daniel. He was a juvenile.
Sounds like adults failed him. And the system failed us.

Well, the criminal justice system is so lax that it doesn't surprise me that this happened. I'm sure that loser was put away for life after his heinous act. Gives me the creeps!

Humans are much more dangerous & evil than any supernatural creatures
@@99WingedTigers Maybe but personally I don;t belive in the devil or anything supernatural. Mind I am not trying to say they don't exist. It's just that I have yet to see any convincing evidence that they do. However, I have seen plenty of evidence that other mortal humans can and will terrorize, brutalize, abuse and kill.
@@WitchidWitchid I dont really recommend this but if you want to be convinced the devil is real or spirits in general then get a ouija board.
For everyone who's asking, "WHY DID THEY LET HIM OUT?!?", here's why:
Ironically, it was the system trying to put him away, for good, that ended up setting him free...
Well done mother, after knowing what your son did. Probably said "My baby would never do something like that! He's Innocent!" Absolute fool.
Thanks for the explanation!
Because the system is broken. He had the money, therefore he could get out
That's the justice system tor ya !
There is nothing more frustrating than the standard ‘dad’ in a horror movie who doesn’t believe
@@Stampedby__bonetti When it is too insane, we go "it cannot be real"
I'm surprised he didn't find the psycho in the closet and think it was his daughters stand on each others' shoulders and wearing a dress...
The really sad part is , they let that insane person out and he murdered people. That guy should have never been released.

Where is the crazy bass-turd now?
He is scheduled to be released in 2033 at the age of 62. Why he didn't get the death penalty or at least life is beyond me
Chris Ruthford, the kid was not insane.

She was around all the time. He called the police and she was arrested for trespassing.
At least she was harmless!
She could've atleast done his laundry
It was in NYC, not Japan
Seen the movie 'Parasite?'
@@plinyelder8156 no, it was in Japan. There probably is a story also like that in NYC too but also one in Japan. If you just google women living inside mans furniture japan it’s the first one that pops up
It gives a whole new meaning to the expression: "Seeing the writing on the wall".
I am absolutely terrified of crawl spaces. If I end up buying a house I will make sure there are no crawl spaces 😫
@@bhargavipba Having a house without a crawl space is a good idea just normally for insulation purposes. I do renovations and besides scary stories the only thing scary in most crawl spaces is all the spider webs I have to crawl through to fix pipes.
Come live in the UK where new builds are so fricking small because we're a small island. Absolutely no built in storage cupboards in my apartment - only a tiny boiler cupboard.
I swear your story telling alone can catch my attention faster than any episode of Dateline. Even when Keith Morrison tells it. That's high praise.

These parents always end up looking like fools
I've been binge watching you. Nothing else compares to your story telling like I feel like I'm a kid and you could have totally taught me everything in life and I would have listened.. No joke
@Jack sometimes you gotta push it a bit because someone might not realise they need a certain type of help. sometimes ‘forcing’ is not bad.
@@mandarina4157 I didn't say anything contrary to what you just said, nor did I say what the father did was wrong. Please reread what I said.

This channel is the most positive addiction I’ve seen. It’s the perfect mixture of fact based story telling but context spooky, i think story tellers like you sir, are part of several branches of medical care, the videos are a healthy way to busy idle hands when avoiding bad habits, keeps your brain occupied with the ability to clean up while you listen. Great guy! Thanks, ‘Bless the ballen’
You can keep that but let it be known Eric clayton has the catch phrases for days
Wow.. poor girls, but my heart is with the dad, I can feel his guilt for thinking his girls were mourning hard..
Your heart is with that inept fool? He failed his daughters on so many levels, a dad is supposed to protect his children, especially his daughters. Study after study overwhelmingly proves that a dad has an enormous impact on his daughter(S) and their future choices, including self esteem, their view of love and respect and what a healthy relationship is.
The father had been through a lot himself with the loss of his wife and having to work so much. We have to remember he was left traumatized too. Seeing a deranged man who has hiding in your house, wearing your dead wife's clothing can be pretty traumatizing.
@@gonfreecss3417 ...no, it's the dad's fault. You don't IMMEDIATELY JUMP to the assumption that your loved ones, whom you raised, are crazy. That reflects on YOU as a PARENT if you do that, not on your children. What he should've done was check the damn house thoroughly, maybe call an exterminator. Don't IMMEDIATELY JUMP to insanity without ever considering that something real, however mundane, could've been the cause. At least be fucking scientific about it.
@@taylors5981 It's not hard to imagine it might have been rats, so I do blame the dad. You don't take your grief out on your children by instantly dismissing their concerns as imagination.
