    I LOVE the tumbleweed type starters, man. 'Flamers' is the brand I use. Light up super quick. I fill one Weber basket with briquettes, fire up two Flamers in the other one and set the full basket right inside of it, sort of a makeshift chimney. After about 10 -15 minutes those bottom briquettes are glowing and my 22'" kettle shoots up to 350-400 in no time.

      @@BBQiT You can dip cotton balls into rubbing alcohol and imo works just as good as most fire starters. For $2 you get an entire bag of cotton balls and a bottle of alcohol. Technically you could use each cotton ball multiple times if you wanted but I believe the absorbency is reduced after your first use. Any material that will soak up the alcohol can be used. Alcohol burns clean without any smoke or sut rising and usually stops burning when the alcohol has dried up so it doesn't even burn the cotton ball or stink like burnt paper. Have you ever tried it?

    I have tried a few different ways to light my chimney starter, but my favorite by far is a click-start propane torch. Just a few seconds in each of the bottom-most vent holes, and in a few minutes it’s burning hot. No ash, and no smoke besides what comes off the charcoal.

  • @johnvrabec9747
    @johnvrabec9747 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I use 2 sheets of our local newspaper. These sheets are roughly half the size of a big city paper. I lay them 90 degrees to each other and take one half of the Weber cube and place it in the center of the paper. I crumble up the paper with the cube in a teepee shape, put it in the bottom of my chimney and light her up. I do this because sometimes there isn't a breeze to add the O2 to the fire (my Weber is in a corner of my patio) and this way it works every time, with or without a breeze. Plus, my box of Weber cubes last a long time.

  • @DarthMourngrym

    When not using the Weber cubes, a paper donut, loosely rolled up with some cooking spray inside is my go to.
    This method lights the fastest because of more surface area. You're lighting the entire bottom of the chimney all at once, instead of a tiny little spot. Gets it ripping really fast, and the smoke from the oil and the paper leads to secondary combustion which accelerates the process.
    Weber cubes are super convenient though. I usually use 2 of them spread to each side of the chimney, and give the chimney a 1/4 turn after a couple minutes to effectively light the chimney in 4 places at once with minimal fuss.
    I also use a empty tuna tin as a riser to get the starter right up under the coals.

    Make your own for about $1... collect the cotton from medicine bottles, fold it up with a pea-sized dollop of petroleum jelly (Vaseline). You can also use make-up remover pads in place of cotton, and leftover candle wax in place to petroleum jelly. Great for camping too. Other fuels include various fats rendered from previous cooks (bacon, duck, and goose being the best!).

    I use the paper from the store ads I get in the mail. Crumple them up, pack them in there pretty good and then light them with a torch. If you leave the chimney half full and then fill it the rest of the way when the bottom coals are lit, you can get that time down to 7-8min.

      I've tryed a few different chimneys and ended with weber. I believe the reason it works so well is the bottom is just Round rods and others use whole in sheet metal. I believe the Weber design lets more air flow and causes a venturi effect better then the other designs. Starts faster and has a fuller burn. But that's just my thoughts on them.

  • @GunnySGT1911
    @GunnySGT1911 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    The best part of using paper is that you don't get off flavors. I've used both the paraffin cubes and a generic version of the BGE product. Both produced an unpleasant chemical taste on the food. I've found you need to give the coals a lot of extra time to completely burn off whatever it is that causes the off flavors before you cook your food. I have found that fatwood has the same problem. Paper is the real winner here.

I'm not a competitive griller so I didn't even know that you could pay money to get fancy charcoal chimney starters. I got a charcoal chimney to stop using lighter fluid and paper was how I learned to start it. But seeing as I get junk mail for free I might as well just keep using that🤷🏾‍♂️. Try putting about a shot glass full of rubbing alcohol on the charcoal. Use the highest alcohol percentage you can find I use 92% get it at wal-mart. Super cheap and super effective. Works at least as well, and in my opinion, better than any of these, no smoke, no chimney needed. Just put your charcoal in your grill, put the alcohol on the charcoal, light it and you will be ready to cook in no time.

    I use a propane weed burner and a couple of fatwood sticks, I can light my fire in fifteen seconds, close the lid on my kamodo grill and fifteen minutes later I'm ready to start cooking. No Chimney just stack the lump charcoal in a semi cone, and the weed burner starts not only the fatwood, but also the lump charcoal.

    Take a half paper towel fold it long ways 2-3 times, dip one end into old kitchen oil, fold it in on itself so you have a 3 inch rectangle of towel. 100% start rate....

    This reminds me - I need to pick up a new Chimney! After years of starting fires (and accidentally leaving it out in the rain) it's pretty rusted out.
    I was just cruising through BBQ channels - super glad I found yours! Good stuff - Keep it up!

    Wad up some newspaper {that's all it's good for, anyway} light it & go grab a beer. Save the wax ones for emergencies.

    I’ve been using the Weber cubes for years. They’ve performed very well, but I hate how the bottom of the cubes ‘flake’ apart when you take them out of the container. I also don’t like the chemical smell when you light them. I’ve been trying some other options this summer, but haven’t been happy with any of them.

    Make 10 thin Slices of cardboard 1/2 inch by 6 inch, then two - 2 inch by 6 inch pieces folded in half against each other with a paper towel in the bottom of the chimney. Light it with a butane burner then slide in the thin pieces of cardboard in the bottom to keep it burning hot. Use you Amazon boxes or and other cardboard. It is fun and in less than a minute you will have your lump charcoal sparking and burning hot. It makes a lot of smoke but this is the best way to get it going. I do it often with my Santa Maria pit BBQ. Use a box cutter to cut the cardboard in a few seconds.
    It's also fun to do.
    I guaranty this will work better than anything you can buy.

    I use paper since we get lots of ads.
    Pro tip: After the paper has burnt out and coals are started, remove the paper for optimal air flow. Your coals will start much much faster if there is nothing underneath after they are started.

    Been using Frontier Tumbleweeds or Diamond’s ‘Strike-A-Fire’ match sticks interchangeably, and they work fine. But am I the only one out there actually sticking the starter inside of the chimney with the charcoal, rather than underneath?

      I've always used newspaper, but I was intrigued by this video because it always leaves a mess, with lots of ash blowing around. I typically just start my chimney away from the grill and its worked fine. I also wonder if these starter cubes might work better when the humidity is really high (which is the only time I've had difficulty getting newspaper to stay lit and burn hot enough to start the coals). Lastly, I thought these might be useful for camping.
      Nonetheless, paper works great.
