Not trying to go overboard but I split redwood or cider and stack them under the chimney to light off the charcoal and it takes about 10 minutes and it really works great thumbs up 👍 on this.

Great and informative video, as always. Like you say, the Tumbleweeds disappear once burned. I like that, so I use them most of the time.

This is a good test of how long each starter burns. The real question or test is how it affects lighting a chimney of charcoal. I use the wax cubes as they work fine, are cheap, and easy to find.

Tim McKusker I still use a wad of paper towels sprayed with Pam at home if I’m out of cubes. It works ok too.

I love the economy of the Weber white cubes. I HATE the packaging and mess. Pushing those things through the foil always produces crumbs and little bits of foil. Tumbleweeds have no mess at all, but are more expensive. Great video, but if more people saw the mess of the cubes being opened I can imagine they too would convert. Thanks for posting. I’ve been wondering about this for a while.

tgarry100 agreed. But they are cheap and they do work but I hate the mess to.

Just bought my first weber cubes and thought I got a bum package because they were really messy, but I guess that's just the way they are....before the cubes, I used the tumbleweeds and I liked those as well.

Love the channel. I use to use the wax cubes but switched to the sure start lighting squares from Menards and played around with them and in fact found out that actually can break the square half or some times in quarters and lights my chimney just as fast so something to look into more as well.

Been using the Weber cubes for years and have never seen the little nugget at the end. Do the test again with a chimney of charcoal over them and I’ll bet you don’t get a nugget left. Tumble weeds are great but way more expensive than the Weber cubes. And I’ve never noticed a taste difference either.

I use the Weber cubes but I only use one and it starts great every time with no residual pieces, briquettes are ready to go in 15 to 20 minutes. I currently use Weber Hickory briquettes but also have a bag of Cowboy lump to switch up every once in a while.

    • @FLYINGSMOKE
      @FLYINGSMOKE  5 ปีที่แล้ว

Stephen Farrell I use lump at home... less ash! But in comps I need the consistency of briquettes. Thank you for your awesome comments. And feel free to share this video with your friends, it helps us grow.

I like the price of the Weber cubes and they work well, but as others said, they are messy and smell like charcoal lighter fluid. I have been using the tumbleweed starters more often. I love the hot burn and no smell! Thanks for doing this comparison.

Great info on starters. I usually use the Weber cubes in their chimney. I viewed a video where cotton balls were soaked in 90% Isopropyl Alcohol and used as a starter. I tried it out and it worked pretty good. No residue left behind and it did the trick. Much cheaper than buying cubes or any other type of starter. No after taste either. Maybe not good for your competition cooks to carry around a jar full of alcohol soaked cotton balls but for home use I think it's a good alternative. I used 2 cotton balls to start a full chimney of Kingsford. Would be interesting to do a more scientific comparison.

Price just went up on these. If you get to a walmart soon, you might find the shelves still list Royal Oak tumbleweeds at $3.87, but the register will ring them at $4.97. Of course the cashier will honor the shelf price. This was yesterday.

Great video and assessment! I pretty much had the same feeling watching that the cubes and tumbleweeds were best for starting a chimney, and lightning nugget more for something that needs a longer burn - at 20 mins, your charcoal should be lit. I have been using a variation on the cardboard things, but I think I'm going to be switching to the tumbleweeds after watching this!!!

I find these results interesting... I recently tried tumble weeds and find the wax cubes starts a chimney better than the tumble weeds. maybe time to try to light chimneys off of these and see how they all stack up against each other. I think I'll stick with Wadded up news paper or wax cubes currently.

So the more the name implies how fast it will start,... the slower it burned... 🤔👀
For me a regular griller, I just want to get the coals ready to cook on as fast as I can and to me, it looked like the regular weber wax cubes did exactly that... They are what I have already been using...

Melt wax in a metal container and pour in each cube hole. Then place in freezer to cool. Then take butter knife and pry out. Store in bag. Thay are also used for wet fire starter.
